../../Sabbat/2005/06.16-19.05BensMovingOnPebbleBeachDansyl/ Ben moves on, I go to Pebble Beach, Syl turns 85 On Tuesday June 14, John Borneman (Anthropology) IMG_0001 and Gyan Prakash (History) IMG_0002 came to visit to discuss the generation and sharing of knowledge.

The next day, June 15, I recorded the penny structures IMG_0003 which Betty had right-ed to a point where they didn't look so bad and then headed home where Suzanne IMG_0004 admired the book I had brought and Jane, IMG_0005 Casey IMG_0006 and Catherine IMG_0007 waited for the rest of the group to assemble which happened in time IMG_0008 IMG_0009 while we were having a dinner at the Chazelles (we, not them) and so they posed as a group IMG_0010 IMG_0011 IMG_0012 and sang some songs even as Suzanne was putting Ben to sleep IMG_0013 IMG_0014 in preparation for the last day when he'd wake up and go to Johnson Park and the last day (after 16 years straight) when I'd take a kid to elementary school.

The next day, we came down and the kitchen counter IMG_0015 showed some signs of the night before as the singing group (who had slept over) assembled slowly for breakfast IMG_0016 and we admired the game IMG_0017 that had come in the cereal as Ben IMG_0018 was ready to go and Jane IMG_0019 was not but no one was going to eat the left over Hoagie IMG_0020 even if all of the strawberries IMG_0021 were gone. Suzanne IMG_0022 wished us well for the last trip to the bus stop where Emily Shea IMG_0023 was taking pictures like this one IMG_0024 but Ben was not participating. After admiring the statues Sarah bought in Greece IMG_0025 we headed to school where Dr. Ginsburg was talking to the PTO mothers IMG_0026 and captured a picture of the principal IMG_0027 and then of Harry Cummins IMG_0028 who was at his last day (at least, for a while) of Princeton schools. Once in the gym, we saw the Resniks IMG_0029 as Kathy Klockenbrink IMG_0030 arrived and I took this self portrait IMG_0031 before capturing the Gelfand parents IMG_0032 and Aunt Peggy IMG_0033 who is always there. Tony Klockenbrink arrived and so I took a picture of the bus stop parents IMG_0034 and siblings IMG_0035 and of those still sitting IMG_0036 as Tony IMG_0037 undoubtedly did the same. As the students climbed the risers, IMG_0038 IMG_0039 the Schures IMG_0040 were amused by James' kilt even as we took a few more pictures of the whole class IMG_0041 IMG_0042 until our view was blocked IMG_0043 and it was time for someone ( thanks to Sarah for volunteering ) to get in position to see those with memories of second grade to assemble IMG_0044 and take their turns IMG_0045 IMG_0046 IMG_0047 until it was Ben's IMG_0048 and then Stephanie Klockenbrink's IMG_0049 and then they finished IMG_0050 IMG_0051 and went through the process of marching through the teachers and new principal IMG_0052 IMG_0053 IMG_0054 before the ceremony was over. I took the obligatory picture of the Blounts IMG_0055 and then the Straus family IMG_0056 who gained a new member IMG_0057 IMG_0058 before going back to their usual size IMG_0059 Audrey having forgotten their camera. After the family pictures IMG_0060 IMG_0061 Ben and Jeremy posed IMG_0062 and then Ben showed us the planting IMG_0063 IMG_0064 he had done around the school. On the way to the car, I ran into Ed Percarpio IMG_0065 getting into his and Tony IMG_0066 waiting for ours as I bid farewell to JP.

Once home, I headed to the airport for a flight to Monterey so I could attend the Princeton conference on invention and innovation. After dinner that night, I captured Nathan Myhrvold IMG_0067 David Botstein IMG_0068 and Jody Friedman IMG_0069 before heading off to my room IMG_0070 and noting the massive size of the bathroom IMG_0071 IMG_0072 IMG_0073 before going to sleep.

The next day was June 17 and I began by admiring my view IMG_0074 IMG_0075 IMG_0076 IMG_0077 before taking a picture of Bailey Dixon '07 IMG_0078 who had just taken my picture and then heading to San Jose to catch a flight to San Diego.

Larry IMG_0079 and Janet IMG_0080 met me at the airport and Janet took this picture IMG_0081 while Larry IMG_0082 tried to do the same with his cell phone camera which replaced the old phone which lost its signal after going through the washing machine. Driving north on I-5, we saw this car from Iowa with surfboards IMG_0083 and then reached our destination -- Suite 306 IMG_0084 where Syl greeted us IMG_0085 as Dan put on his shirt IMG_0086 and we were served fruit and nuts IMG_0087 as they do in California. Next we saw the card IMG_0088 that came with the orchids, the flowers from Michelle and Jason IMG_0089 the new orchid IMG_0090 and the older one IMG_0091 which is getting a new bud. Meanwhile, Syl was unpacking the bells from Sarah IMG_0092 and getting ready to install them IMG_0093 as Janet IMG_0094 admired the Do Not Disturb sign and the bells were shown IMG_0095 even as these azaleas IMG_0096 arrived from Linda.

But we were there for a reason -- Sylvia's 85th birthday. So, we headed to George's IMG_0097 and went in IMG_0098 so that each of us IMG_0099 IMG_0100 IMG_0101 IMG_0102 IMG_0103 and the birthday girl twice could read the menu IMG_0104 IMG_0105 as Shane, our waiter, explained the specials IMG_0106 and then Sylvia IMG_0107 Larry IMG_0108 Janet IMG_0109 Dan IMG_0110 and I IMG_0111 in this better self portrait IMG_0112 could order as the bread IMG_0113 arrived and the cards IMG_0114 were opened IMG_0115 as the first course of crab IMG_0116 was arriving. The wine came IMG_0117 and was oriented IMG_0118 for a good picture as my vegetarian plate IMG_0119 tasted as good as it looked and the server IMG_0120 brought the other main courses IMG_0121 IMG_0122 IMG_0123 IMG_0124 IMG_0125 so that as the sun set IMG_0126 I could join the clean plate club IMG_0127 and see the birthday chocolates IMG_0128 even as these pictures IMG_0129 IMG_0130 IMG_0131 were being taken by the staff photographer IMG_0132 and we were headed back to the apartment. A discussion of who was really taller led to this picture IMG_0133 though there was no doubt of who was more handsome.

Saturday morning, June 18, we repeated tradition and headed to the pancake house IMG_0134 which still looked the same as last time . DanSyl IMG_0135 read the menu as I IMG_0136 got ready to order from Kathleen (aged 14) and her sister (almost 21) IMG_0137 who brought me decaf IMG_0138 and syrups IMG_0139 as Dansyl IMG_0140 were waiting for my banana pancakes IMG_0141 and their shared omelette IMG_0142 and pecan pancakes IMG_0143 before we headed past the cockteleria IMG_0144 and back to the car for further journeys. We went to the beach at the cove in La Jolla and parked the car IMG_0145 before meeting these people IMG_0146 who gave me a pamphlet and this booth IMG_0147 where this gentleman IMG_0148 wished to sell us shirts. We walked along the beach to where a wedding party was posing IMG_0149 IMG_0150 and then left Sylvia IMG_0151 on a bench as we walked on and admired this gentleman IMG_0152 who seemed to be having a perfect beach day as the life guards IMG_0153 had moved on and the info booth IMG_0154 told us to be careful of the power of the surf IMG_0155 IMG_0156 IMG_0157 even as we returned to Sylvia on her cell phone IMG_0158 and I took this self portrait IMG_0159 after which Dan took a picture of mother and son IMG_0160 before we met this lady IMG_0161 who sold us environmentally correct T shirts. After a rest and a movie, we went to Papachino's IMG_0162 where after a few missed pictures IMG_0163 IMG_0164 IMG_0165 I finally got it right IMG_0166 just in time for the bread IMG_0167 which was a prelude to our pizza IMG_0168 and Dan's pasta IMG_0169 all of which made me look better IMG_0170 as we got ready to leave the restaurant to see the balloons IMG_0171 mixed with palm trees and about to descend IMG_0172 as day was done.

Sunday June 19, I headed to the airport and my flight on which this IMG_0173 was my salad course and this was my main course IMG_0174 though the people who ate meat got this IMG_0175 as a main course. On the way home, I met the cell phone twins IMG_0176 who were practicing for their later life. Once home, Jane and Ben were on the couch IMG_0177 and Suzanne was glad to see me IMG_0178 as I was glad to see her IMG_0179 before the T shirts IMG_0180 were modeled and the food IMG_0181 and buns IMG_0182 were prepared so that this could be my dinner IMG_0183 with Ben IMG_0184 Sarah IMG_0185 Ed IMG_0186 and Jane whose food IMG_0187 arrived before she did IMG_0188 though the skewers IMG_0189 seemed to be for Suzanne IMG_0190 as we had a delightful Father's Day celebration. ../../Sabbat/2005/05.23-06.15.05SarahsTripToEurope/ Sarahs trip to Europe IMG_8630 IMG_8631 IMG_8632 IMG_8633 IMG_9653 IMG_9654 IMG_9655 IMG_9656 ../../Sabbat/2005/06.10-14.05AWeekend/ A weekend of activity It was Friday June 10 and we were getting ready for a weekend of activity. The Kramers IMG_1403 came by and we headed out to the Fete preview where I ran into Ed Gwazda '70 IMG_1404 and then Frank Wojciechowski IMG_1405 who was nice enough to take this picture of the four of us IMG_1406 before we ran into Don, the bartender, IMG_1407 who took this picture IMG_1408 before we went into Jadwin gym which was hot, but not so hot that the Kramers IMG_1409 couldn't dance as we took this self portrait IMG_1410 causing Peter to try on the wig IMG_1411 which amused our table mate Karol Moss '87 IMG_1412 though we all decide we had to go outside and cool off.

In the cooler air, Suzanne posed with the Kramers IMG_1413 and then they posed IMG_1414 before she rejoined them IMG_1415 as Peter gathered water IMG_1416 IMG_1417 IMG_1418 and to Suzanne's amusement IMG_1419 poured it on Seva's head IMG_1420 so that she needed to dry off. I took another self portrait IMG_1421 as Seva and Suzanne IMG_1422 headed to the car so that we could call it a night.

Saturday morning June 11 began with me talking to Claire Percarpio IMG_1423 and picking up Ben from the sleep over when he showed me his injured toe IMG_1424 which looked better IMG_1425 after a visit to the doctor. Later, Nathaniel IMG_1426 came over and Ben played his game IMG_1427 as Nathaniel posed IMG_1428 and then played his IMG_1429 spurring Ben on IMG_1430 to greater heights. The games must have been inspiring because both Jane and Ben were sound asleep IMG_1431 when we returned home that night.

On Sunday June 12, we went to Small World for coffee and ran into Bob Cava and David MacMillan IMG_1432 and on the way home saw Jim O'Neil and Jody Friedman IMG_1433 before we ran into the remnants of the tree IMG_1434 that had been cut down and this picture IMG_1435 from which the dedicated viewer can determine the age of the tree. Once at home, Suzanne IMG_1436 tried to make sense of Ben's test scores as Ben played PS/2 IMG_1437 and Jane worked on her picture editting IMG_1438 for around 8. I went to the Politics department event to see Jeff Herbst off and ran into Lynn White and Paul Sigmund IMG_1439 and Gary Bass and Tamsen Shaw IMG_1440 before heading home via McCaffery's where I ran into the Stallers IMG_1441 in the spice section.

Later we went out to dinner and along the way met Mike and Judy Leopold IMG_1442 IMG_1443 which caused us to get these drinks IMG_1444 and this wisdom IMG_1445 as Jane IMG_1446 Suzanne IMG_1447 me IMG_1448 and Ben (who tried to escape) IMG_1449 shared antipasta IMG_1450 a meatball sub IMG_1451 and this pizza IMG_1452 at Iano's IMG_1453 before taking a stroll to the bank IMG_1454 and getting into the car IMG_1455 for the ride home.

Then, on Tuesday June 14, I saw Martin Kern and Keiko Ono IMG_1456 IMG_1457 ../../Sabbat/2005/06.01-09.05People/ People on Campus and Around 8 On June 1, Jennifer Widner (Politics and WWS) IMG_1385 came to visit. Later that day, Sheila Arora '05 IMG_1386 came to pick up her painting. That evening, we went to our last JP picnic and saw Sam Cummins IMG_1387 who was at his last Princeton event for a while.

On Sunday June 5, the kids in Around 8 gave a concert for the parents IMG_1388 IMG_1389 IMG_1390 IMG_1391 at which Jane's solo IMG_1392 IMG_1393 IMG_1394 was blocked by the hair bow of the woman in front.

On Tuesday June 7, I saw Atul Kohli (Politics and WWS) IMG_1395 and Helen Milner (Politics and WWS) IMG_1396 before doing some penny installation. On Wednesday June 8, I noted that the pennies IMG_1397 were not as straight as I might have hoped.

On Thursday June 9, I met with Bob Kaster (Classics) IMG_1398 and had lunch with Kim Schepelle (WWS and UCHV) IMG_1399 before returning for June's birthday celebration and getting this picture of June and Danielle Eige IMG_1400 and the cake we ate IMG_1401 and the tiger decoration IMG_1402 from the staff picnic. ../../Sabbat/2005/05.23-31.05PeopleAndGraduation/ Graduation and the events leading up to it On May 23, 2005 IMG_1246 Guy Nordenson (Architecture) IMG_1247 Keith Whittington (Politics) IMG_1248 and Thomas Christensen (Woodrow Wilson School) came for various discussions. MP> (Politics) On May 24, 2005 IMG_1249 Oliver Avens (Dean of College) came and later in the day IMG_1250 Laurel Harvey (Administration) came.

On May 27, we went out for sushi for dinner. Ben IMG_1251 Suzanne IMG_1252 and I IMG_1253 admired the mural IMG_1254 but really liked the sushi IMG_1255 itself as Jesse Goodman IMG_1256 was our waitress.

Saturday morning (May 28), as Ben IMG_1257 chose his clothes, Matt Traylor IMG_1258 appeared while Jane IMG_1259 was slowly getting up and then Annie Knickman IMG_1260 arrived to help make the cover for the Around 8 CD. Suzanne IMG_1261 gathered her things and we headed off to the P rade where we stood with IMG_1262 Olga Troyanskya (Computer Science and LSIIG), Emily Pronin (Psychology and Woodrow Wilson School), and Kevin Wayne (Computer Science) and were amused when IMG_1263 Clarence Rowley (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and '95) and IMG_1264 Naomi Leonard (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and '85) passed by. On the way down the hill, I ran into IMG_1265 Beth Lind (Development and '95) with one of her classmates IMG_1266 and on the way back up we saw the remnants IMG_1267 IMG_1268 of a wild party before heading off to Teresa's where this IMG_1269 was our dessert.

May 29 started with Suzanne IMG_1270 having her oatmeal before I ran into IMG_1271 Steven Healy and John Barbour of Public Safety en route to the Baccalaureate.

On May 30, the board had it's Memorial Day meeting and I took a picture of IMG_1272 Nancy Newman with her daughter. Later at the honorary degree dinner, I took a picture of IMG_1273 Eva Gossman.

The main event was on May 31, so we started with a warmup picture IMG_1274 as I trained Sandra to take many of the pictures that followed. But first, she posed with IMG_1275 Beatriz Colomina (Architecture) before helping the PADT people IMG_1276 IMG_1277 IMG_1278 IMG_1279 IMG_1280 IMG_1281 IMG_1282 IMG_1283 get ready for the pictures I was going to take IMG_1284 IMG_1285 IMG_1286 and maybe for the ceremony. Congratulations to Michael Wood (English), Beatriz Colomina (Architecture), Joao Biehl (Anthropology) and Bob Cava (Chemistry) this years winners. I followed with pictures of Joao, his wife and son IMG_1287 IMG_1288 IMG_1289 and then Sandra took them outside IMG_1290 IMG_1291 IMG_1292 IMG_1293 IMG_1294 IMG_1295 for the real rehearsal.

As the assmbled continued, we thanked IMG_1296 Kathy Donnelly for the food and assembled honorary degree winners and friends IMG_1297 as IMG_1298 Bill Russel posed and then IMG_1299 Paul Rauhenbush (Religious Life) and Yo-yo Ma posed. Meanwhile, IMG_1300 Sandie Bermann was getting reading to lead the parade though there were more pictures IMG_1301 IMG_1302 IMG_1303 IMG_1304 to be taken before I posed with IMG_1305 Anne d'Harnoncourt from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and IMG_1306 Karin Trainer showed her joy at the event as IMG_1307 Brian McDonald and I chatted before my pictures with IMG_1308 Wole Soyinka and IMG_1309 Yo-yo Ma as BoB Rawson IMG_1310 pondered life post-trustee. A few more pictures, IMG_1311 IMG_1312 IMG_1313 sent Sandra outside where she watched IMG_1314 Pablo Debenedetti (Chemical Engineering), Hank Dobin (Dean of College), and Thomas Leisten (Art and Archaeology) assemble as Anne Marie IMG_1315 got ready to pose with Kai IMG_1316 as Larry Peterson IMG_1317 and IMG_1318 Jeremy Kashdin (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) watched. The crowd IMG_1319 continued as IMG_1320 Joe Taylor, my predecessor, appeared in the crowd IMG_1321 and the students IMG_1322 and faculty IMG_1323 seemed ready to march even as Mary IMG_1324 made one last phone call and IMG_1325 Marcia Snowden (Assistant to the President) and Raj Vinnakota (Trustee) posed as did IMG_1326 Laurel Harvey (Administration) getting ready for his first parade.

Now it was getting to be time for our crowd to assemble IMG_1327 IMG_1328 IMG_1329 IMG_1330 IMG_1331 IMG_1332 IMG_1333 and get ready to march, so Chris IMG_1334 and I IMG_1335 had clashing colors as Shirley and Bob Rawson IMG_1336 appeared and I took this picture of IMG_1337 Sandra and Mary who make it all work as they took a picture of the 4 of us IMG_1338 Chris Eisgruber, Shirley Tilghman, Bob Rawson, amd David Dobkin who seem responsible for the parade and get to march last. Then Mark B IMG_1339 appeared and Edwin IMG_1340 watched as the parade IMG_1341 IMG_1342 IMG_1343 IMG_1344 IMG_1345 made its way and the people IMG_1346 Jennifer Bolton IMG_1347 and Jennifer Bolton, Ann Halliday, and Kathy Donnelly who make it all happen breathed a sigh of relief. The crowd moved IMG_1348 IMG_1349 and IMG_1350 2 of the 3 deans -- Anne Marie Slaughter and Maria Klawe -- got ready to march. There was still lots more time for photos IMG_1351 IMG_1352 IMG_1353 IMG_1354 IMG_1355 IMG_1356 IMG_1357 IMG_1358 IMG_1359 IMG_1360 IMG_1361 IMG_1362 before my group led by IMG_1363 Tom Breidenthal was ready to go.

We made our way in IMG_1364 IMG_1365 IMG_1366 IMG_1367 and then Sandra took a break until I started awarding the PADT's IMG_1368 IMG_1369 IMG_1370 IMG_1371 IMG_1372 IMG_1373 IMG_1374 IMG_1375 IMG_1376 IMG_1377 IMG_1378 and then we were marching out past IMG_1379 Marcia Snowden and Susan Kovach who helped the president get to and through this event and back to the medics IMG_1380 IMG_1381 who made sure everyone survived. On the way to lunch, we ran into IMG_1382 Steve Oxman and Bob and Judy Rawson -- the past and future leadership on the board. Once at lunch, IMG_1383 Neta Bachall (Astrophysics) appeared and was recorded. Another successful graduation event. That afternoon, Alex Haldeman '03 IMG_1384 stopped by to give me a picture fromt he Art of Science exhibition.

After the graduation, it was clearly time to celebrate, so we went on tour Gangof4AtTheBeach GangOf4AtTheGates Not to be outdone, the assistants SandraMaryAtBeach SandraMaryMarciaAtBeach took their own trip to the beach. ../../Sabbat/2005/05.25.05JaneInNYC/ Jane's day in the city IMG_0424 IMG_0425 IMG_0426 IMG_0427 IMG_0428 IMG_0429 IMG_0430 IMG_0431 IMG_0432 IMG_0433 IMG_0434 IMG_0435 IMG_0436 IMG_0437 IMG_0438 IMG_0439 IMG_0440 IMG_0441 IMG_0442 IMG_0443 IMG_0444 IMG_0445 IMG_0446 IMG_0447 IMG_0448 IMG_0449 IMG_0450 IMG_0451 IMG_0452 IMG_0453 IMG_0454 IMG_0455 IMG_0456 IMG_0457 IMG_0458 IMG_0459 IMG_0460 IMG_0461 IMG_0462 IMG_0463 IMG_0464 IMG_0465 IMG_0466 IMG_0467 IMG_0468 IMG_0469 IMG_0470 IMG_0471 IMG_0472 IMG_0473 IMG_0474 IMG_0475 IMG_0476 IMG_0477 IMG_0478 IMG_0479 IMG_0480 IMG_0481 IMG_0482 IMG_0483 IMG_0484 IMG_0485 IMG_0486 IMG_0487 IMG_0488 IMG_0489 IMG_0490 IMG_0491 IMG_0492 IMG_0493 IMG_0494 IMG_0495 IMG_0496 IMG_0497 IMG_0498 IMG_0499 IMG_0500 IMG_0501 IMG_0502 IMG_0503 IMG_0504 IMG_0505 IMG_0506 IMG_0507 IMG_0508 IMG_0509 IMG_0510 IMG_0511 IMG_0512 IMG_0513 IMG_0514 IMG_0515 IMG_0516 IMG_0517 IMG_0518 IMG_0519 IMG_0520 IMG_0521 IMG_0522 IMG_0523 IMG_0524 IMG_0525 IMG_0526 IMG_0527 IMG_0528 IMG_0529 IMG_0530 IMG_0531 IMG_0532 IMG_0533 IMG_0534 IMG_0535 IMG_0536 IMG_0537 IMG_0538 IMG_0539 IMG_0540 IMG_0541 IMG_0542 IMG_0543 IMG_0544 IMG_0545 IMG_0546 IMG_0547 IMG_0548 IMG_0549 IMG_0550 IMG_0551 IMG_0552 IMG_0553 IMG_0554 IMG_0555 IMG_0556 IMG_0557 IMG_0558 IMG_0559 IMG_0560 IMG_0561 IMG_0562 IMG_0563 IMG_0564 IMG_0565 IMG_0566 IMG_0567 IMG_0568 IMG_0569 IMG_0570 IMG_0571 IMG_0572 IMG_0573 IMG_0574 IMG_0575 IMG_0576 IMG_0577 IMG_0578 IMG_0579 IMG_0580 IMG_0581 IMG_0582 IMG_0583 IMG_0584 IMG_0585 IMG_0586 IMG_0587 IMG_0588 IMG_0589 IMG_0590 IMG_0591 IMG_0592 IMG_0593 IMG_0594 IMG_0595 IMG_0596 IMG_0597 IMG_0598 IMG_0599 IMG_0600 IMG_0601 IMG_0602 IMG_0603 IMG_0604 IMG_0605 IMG_0606 IMG_0607 IMG_0608 IMG_0609 IMG_0610 IMG_0611 IMG_0612 IMG_0613 IMG_0614 IMG_0615 IMG_0616 IMG_0617 IMG_0618 IMG_0619 IMG_0620 IMG_0621 ../../Sabbat/2005/05.21.05DinnerWDickAndFran/ Dinner with Dick and Fran Saturday May 20 dawned as a beautiful day so Ben IMG_1204 and Suzanne IMG_1205 and I decided to take a walk into town. Along the way, we ran into Bob Cava IMG_1206 and Polly and Ben Straus IMG_1207 before Ben IMG_1208 Suzanne IMG_1209 and I IMG_1210 settled in for chocolate chip pancakes (Ben) IMG_1211 mushroom omelet (Suzanne) IMG_1212 and cheese omelet with egg beaters (me) IMG_1213 for our breakfast at the Carousel. On the way back, the men got haircuts and then we ran into Jeff and Ilana Herbst IMG_1214 before reaching home.

In the midst of a downpour, we parked the car IMG_1215 and waited for the train IMG_1216 IMG_1217 to get to the city where people seem to either take pictures IMG_1218 or shop for things -- nuts IMG_1219 and handbags IMG_1220 IMG_1221 on the street.

When we got to the Palace where Dick and Fran were staying, we were glad to see them IMG_1222 but then headed back onto the streets for even more handbags IMG_1223 before we settled down at the wrong bar at the Algonquin for these colorful drinks IMG_1224 and then headed to DB Bistro Moderne for dinner which began with bread IMG_1225 as Dick and Fran IMG_1226 studied the menu which Suzanne and I IMG_1227 took this self portrait and a few more pictures of Fran IMG_1228 IMG_1229 to get ready for this picture of the 2 of them IMG_1230 before the courtesy appetizer (olive tappanade) IMG_1231 came followed by the crab salad IMG_1232 which shone better in lower light IMG_1233 and the special tomato and goat cheese pastry IMG_1234 with Suzanne's scallops IMG_1235 my vegetable plate IMG_1236 Fran's veal IMG_1237 and cute potatoes IMG_1238 and Dick halibut IMG_1239 all nicely accompanied by this wine IMG_1240 even as our waiter IMG_1241 took a picture of others and the dessert IMG_1242 IMG_1243 was nicely presented. On Friday May 20, it was prom night and before the prom, the after-prom and the after-after-prom we decided to have a pre-prom gathering as we had done for Sarah's prom in 2002 and Jane's Cotillion in 2004 . The assembled IMG_1090 IMG_1091 started to gather for photos IMG_1092 IMG_1093 but all of the players should be known to you gentle viewer even as the parents IMG_1094 IMG_1095 tried to take more photos and this is what they saw IMG_1096 IMG_1097 IMG_1098 as Benjamin IMG_1099 hid in the other room and Justin IMG_1100 took a phone call. As Dale Engelbert chatted with Devon and Sarah IMG_1101 there were more prom'ers assembling IMG_1102 IMG_1103 for the photographers IMG_1104 IMG_1105 IMG_1106 to behold making it a banner day for Kodak since not all of the pictures were digital.

Next, IMG_1107 Younjin Yi and Mike Cho arrived followed by the IMG_1108 IMG_1109 Szabo family as conversations IMG_1110 continued int he other room and Dan Sullivan IMG_1111 and his parents arrived. As Jane had her conversation IMG_1119 and Suzanne had hers IMG_1120 Sarah chatted with IMG_1121 Liz Marchetta (possibly about the prom 3 years ago?) and Jane and John IMG_1122 made their way IMG_1123 to the kitchen IMG_1124 and began the task IMG_1125 of exchanging flowers IMG_1126 which continues over the next many images IMG_1127 IMG_1128 IMG_1129 IMG_1130 IMG_1131 IMG_1132 IMG_1133 IMG_1134 IMG_1135 IMG_1136 IMG_1137 IMG_1138 IMG_1139 IMG_1140 IMG_1141 IMG_1142 IMG_1143 without commentary but with this insignificant picture IMG_1144 before the final result IMG_1145 which was a prelude to the group assembling IMG_1146 for some rooftop IMG_1147 IMG_1148 IMG_1149 pictures while conversation continued IMG_1150 and Andrew and Lucy posed IMG_1151 IMG_1152 as did Tess and Justin IMG_1153 IMG_1154 and this closeup IMG_1155 before we took sister pictures of the Marchettas IMG_1156 and Sarah and Jane IMG_1157 and then the boys gathered IMG_1158 IMG_1159 IMG_1160 IMG_1161 and posed as Justin Huang, Pierce Tria, Andrew Szabo, Mike Cho, Dan Sullivan, John Szabo, Alex Tank, Angus Pacala and then as IMG_1162 Andrew Black, Justin Huang, Pierce Tria, Andrew Szabo, Mike Cho, Dan Sullivan, John Szabo, Alex Tank, Angus Pacala which made the girls feel that they should pose as IMG_1163 IMG_1164 Tess Edmonds, Jane Dobkin, Youngmin Yi, Lucy McKeon (can't see), Jen Lerner, Lauren Santiago, Caitlin Rhoades (can't see), Younjin Yi, Liz Gale-Bentz, Lauren Engelbert, Catherine Marchetta, Christina Jones, Raisa Ahmed, Elena Fabiano as the conversations continued IMG_1165 and the food stood IMG_1166 as blurry images IMG_1167 and flowers IMG_1168 IMG_1169 led to this picture of the 2 girls IMG_1170 in the class of 2002 IMG_1171 and this corsage IMG_1172 and Mr. Jones IMG_1173 before we captured Jane and Lucy's feet IMG_1174 and these gag photos (at least, I hope they're gags) IMG_1175 IMG_1176 IMG_1177 IMG_1178 IMG_1179 IMG_1180 and these pictures of more IMG_1181 and even more IMG_1182 feet before Jane and Andrew IMG_1183 IMG_1184 IMG_1185 posed for a few as Catherine Marchetta IMG_1186 came around the bend IMG_1187 for a better picture and Jane IMG_1188 noted the sushi IMG_1189 as she and John chatted IMG_1190 and then she started to get ready IMG_1191 when Alex Tank IMG_1192 appeared causing Jane IMG_1193 IMG_1194 to pose with Lucy and Michelle Soffen IMG_1195 before Alessandra Mikic and Michelle Soffen posed IMG_1196 and then Alessandra Mikic, Carolyn Williams and Michelle Soffen posed for almost the last prom picture before Carolyn got ready IMG_1197 to pose with Jane IMG_1198 and Lucy IMG_1199 as I took this self portrait IMG_1200 and wished John and Jane IMG_1201 and David Szabo IMG_1202 a good prom as Suzanne did the same with Michael IMG_1203 and we were all glad that prom comes but once a year but they weren't done because they headed off to the station AtPlatform to find Harry Potter. ../../Sabbat/2005/05.10-16.05BenConcertsC3Dinner/ Ben's concerts and the c/3 dinner On Tuesday, May 10, it was getting to be time for another round of concerts, but before the concerts could start, I met with the HR people IMG_0953 Judy Diamond IMG_0954 and Allison Nelson and took their pictures.

Then, we headed off to the band concert. Kara and Audrey IMG_0955 were there but because we were late, Jane IMG_0956 and I had to stand. The first band IMG_0957 assembled with Ben IMG_0958 on the sidelines as Doris Shea IMG_0959 watched. Next Ben's band IMG_0960 (he's on the left) played and I captured a broad picture IMG_0961 before aiming for this self portrait IMG_0962 and then capturing the sights IMG_0963 if not the sounds and a bad image IMG_0964 of the program. The band played on IMG_0965 IMG_0966 IMG_0967 from various angles and then Dr. Ginsburg IMG_0968 thanked the director IMG_0969 IMG_0970 IMG_0971 as well deserved flowers appeared and we checked out Ben IMG_0972 and headed off IMG_0973 but not before finding Bill Flemmer IMG_0974 in the trees and taking a picture of Audrey IMG_0975 taking a picture which could be a new collection. This IMG_0976 might be what she captured.

On Friday, May 13, we gathered Ben IMG_0977 and Suzanne IMG_0978 and headed to the school where we saw the garden IMG_0979 and then a novel approach IMG_0980 to fund raising. Joel IMG_0981 was in costume as Jane and John IMG_0982 watched and we ran into first Harry Cummins IMG_0983 and then Harry and Carol Alter IMG_0984 all of which happened as Ben IMG_0985 tied his bandana and IMG_0986 adjusted it and then IMG_0987 posed for the camera IMG_0988 as we met Alan Straus on our way to the concert where the bus stop kids IMG_0989 and Tony Klockenbrink IMG_0990 were assembling as we took this self portrait IMG_0991 and watched the show begin IMG_0992 IMG_0993 IMG_0994 IMG_0995 even as Ed Percarpio IMG_0996 recorded it on film and Suzanne IMG_0997 and Jane IMG_0998 listened to Dr. Ginsburg IMG_0999 as he introduced the show which led to even more photos IMG_1000 IMG_1001 IMG_1002 IMG_1003 IMG_1004 IMG_1005 IMG_1006 IMG_1007 IMG_1008 IMG_1009 which were dark as is the nature of hip hop. Dr. Ginsburg IMG_1010 IMG_1011 said his thanks and dismissed us IMG_1012 so we went to see Ben's artwork with him IMG_1013 IMG_1014 and then headed home and soon after Claire Mulvey IMG_1015 appeared with her boy friend.

Monday May 16 was the c/3 dinner so just as we had done in 2004 we gathered the staff IMG_1016 including the photographer on the right and assembled some food IMG_1017 and nuts IMG_1018 and set the table IMG_1019 with interesting flower arrangements IMG_1020 IMG_1021 so make it look good IMG_1022 as the flowers IMG_1023 IMG_1024 IMG_1025 made the outside IMG_1026 with its people having cocktails IMG_1027 and its flowers IMG_1028 feel like the inside with its flowers IMG_1029 and tables IMG_1030 and flowers IMG_1031 and place settings IMG_1032 and candles IMG_1033 and flowers IMG_1034 and tables IMG_1035 IMG_1036 set apart from the flowers IMG_1037 as the outside people were ready to come through the door IMG_1038 to the candles IMG_1039 and tables IMG_1040 adorned by flowers IMG_1041 IMG_1042 IMG_1043 IMG_1044 even as the candles IMG_1045 IMG_1046 IMG_1047 IMG_1048 IMG_1049 made Ben fly by and the flowers IMG_1050 IMG_1051 IMG_1052 IMG_1053 IMG_1054 IMG_1055 highlighted an excellent dinner as the table IMG_1056 prepared for the meal after which elegant dessert IMG_1057 IMG_1058 was served. ../../Sabbat/2005/05.05-08.05CruiseBehrmanMothersDay/ Cruising, Behrmann and Motherhood It was early May and after talking with David Blei who I hope with join Computer Science and Bernard Chazelle who is already there on the 5th IMG_0872 I decided to take the next day off and drive to Philadelphia where I came to Tony Lukes IMG_0873 and saw DrLen IMG_0874 on the roof even as I was guided elsewhere IMG_0875 for parking as the sign was assembled IMG_0876 and we drove in tandem IMG_0877 to get this fallafel IMG_0878 and desserts IMG_0879 that Len IMG_0880 and I IMG_0881 thought we'd enjoy as he dug in IMG_0882 and we felt the sugar surges.

This led us to the river where the geese and goslings IMG_0883 IMG_0884 IMG_0885 IMG_0886 IMG_0887 IMG_0888 and rowers IMG_0889 were to be observed from the rocks IMG_0890 as more rowed by IMG_0891 IMG_0892 IMG_0893 which put DrLen into a cell phone mood IMG_0894 even as I took self portraits IMG_0895 IMG_0896 and rang up Jacobo so he could answer DrLen's question IMG_0897 about the derivation of the word Wicked.

Next we headed to Dr Len's house IMG_0898 where there was coconut cake and pie IMG_0899 and liquid IMG_0900 to wash it down as I ate away IMG_0901 and Judy appeared IMG_0902 to start the next course of food.

Back at home, Suzanne IMG_0903 was ready so we went to see Jane IMG_0904 and the gang IMG_0905 IMG_0906 give their flute concerts as Ben and Jane IMG_0907 were ready for celebrations afterwards.

The next day was the next Behrmann dinner. So as we had done in 2004 we put on our fancies and Suzanne posed with Ben IMG_0908 IMG_0909 IMG_0910 and then Ben and Jane IMG_0911 IMG_0912 and then Jane IMG_0913 IMG_0914 and finally me IMG_0915 IMG_0916 IMG_0917 with a pause for Jane's opposites IMG_0918 before we took a few more obligatory photos IMG_0919 IMG_0920 recorded the back yard IMG_0921 and Ben IMG_0922 shooting IMG_0923 and the ball hitting the hoop IMG_0924 so that we could say good bye to Jane IMG_0925 with her opposites IMG_0926 and head to the dinner.

Along the way, we ran into Karin Trainer and Bill Stowe IMG_0927 and Bill was nice enough to take this picture of us IMG_0928 before I took this picture of Steve Weiss and Martha Himmelfarb IMG_0929 though I did not take photos at the dinner itself.

The next morning, we walked into town for Mother's Day coffee and met the Girrleman's IMG_0930 IMG_0931 with their wallet eating dog IMG_0932 before heading home to assemble the troups for the annual Mother's day lunch.

As we'd done in previous years

we went to Main Street where we sat at the same table but in different seats as Ben and Sarah were one side IMG_0933 Suzanne was at the head IMG_0934 and I IMG_0935 sat next to Jane IMG_0936 even as Ben IMG_0937 IMG_0938 posed for a few more pictures. We began with Bloody Mary's (as we did last year) IMG_0939 and then con queso dip IMG_0940 as these family pictures IMG_0941 IMG_0942 were taken by the waitress IMG_0943 who remembered taking our pictures last year as well. Suzanne had salmon IMG_0944 Jane had the sandwich IMG_0945 IMG_0946 Ben had the burger IMG_0947 Sarah had the salad IMG_0948 and I had vegetarian chili IMG_0949 all of which represented only slight departures from the year before. For dessert, we added carrot cake IMG_0950 tot he Mississippi mud IMG_0951 and the brownie with ice cream IMG_0952 from the previous year.

Somehow, I think we'll be going back to Main Street next year. ../../Sabbat/2005/05.03-04.05ArtPeopleCampus/ The art, the people, the mix Tuesday May 3 was a day of art. First I went to 185 Nassau Street to sort out new art for my office IMG_0859 IMG_0860 IMG_0861 IMG_0862 IMG_0863 IMG_0864 IMG_0865 and then I went to the Art of Science show where I saw Perry Cook IMG_0866 IMG_0867 and Emmet Gowin IMG_0868 of the Visual Arts program.

The next day, I had a faculty lunch for IMG_0869 IMG_0870 Sigurd Wagner (Electrical Engineering), Barry Jacobs (Psychology), Maria Klawe (School of Engineering and Applied Science), Michael Smith (Philosophy), John Ikenberry (Politics and Woodrow Wilson School), and Andrew Ford (Classics) before returning home to see this bird IMG_0871 that Josephine had found. ../../Sabbat/2005/04.26-30.05VariousandNobelDinner/ Black ties for Nobel Winners On Tuesday, April 26, Ignacio Rodriguez-Iturbe of Civil and Environmental Engineering IMG_0831 came to visit.

Then on Thursday, April 28, Dan Blanton of English IMG_0832 came for a chat. Later that day, Emmet Gowin (Visual Arts) IMG_0833 wandered by and because he is a photographer, this picture IMG_0834 seemed more appropriate. Ben and I headed off to FristFest where we met ChefRon IMG_0835 out of uniform and this gentleman (whose name I forget) IMG_0836 who manages Prospect.

Then on Saturday, April 30, we went to the library where Jane and Shiraz IMG_0837 went to the science program while Suzanne IMG_0838 Ben IMG_0839 and I IMG_0840 enjoyed the quiet with a good book though some of us put the book down for the photos.

That evening, we left Ben and Nathaniel IMG_0841 and put on our formal gear IMG_0842 and had Jane IMG_0843 take a test picture IMG_0844 and then these real pictures IMG_0845 IMG_0846 IMG_0847 IMG_0848 IMG_0849 IMG_0850 IMG_0851 IMG_0852 IMG_0853 before heading to the Nobel Prize dinner to celebrate our physicists -- David Gross (other side of Shirley) and Frank Wilczek IMG_0854 who was with his wife Betsy Devine IMG_0855 as Chris Eisgruber IMG_0856 and Suzanne IMG_0857 chatted and I observed Paul LaMarche IMG_0858 taking my picture.

As we were having this experience, in another part of town, Sarah was going to House Parties ../../Sabbat/2005/04.26-30.05VariousandNobelDinner/HouseParties/ House Parties -- Sarah It was house parties and so Sarah and Ed IMG_8640 IMG_8641 IMG_8642 posed in Prospect Gardens and then Ed posed with Devon IMG_8643 and Sarah posed with Devon IMG_8644 IMG_8645 IMG_8646 and then it was time to go eat the salad IMG_8647 even as Devon approached the flower IMG_8648 on top of the salad they ate. Ed IMG_8649 then approached the flower. Meanwhile, Darin (Allie's boy friend), Allie Squires, Tarryn Chun, Jed Q. Peterson, Ed and Sarah IMG_8653 were at the table as Scott Grzenczyk IMG_8654 IMG_8655 IMG_8656 toasted the club.

Amy posed with Sarah IMG_8661 and then Devon and Nicole Greenbaum posed IMG_8663 after which Sarah posed with Jessie IMG_8664 IMG_8665 and with Ed IMG_8666 before Ed and Scott IMG_8667 decided to do the Hollywood thing with Sarah and Ed and Scott posed with Jessie IMG_8668 to end the evening.

For the Saturday semi-formal, here was Sarah IMG_8669 and Ed IMG_8670 and Sarah and Ed IMG_8671 taken by Ed even as he posed. ../../Sabbat/2005/04.23.05PassoverSeder/ Chag Same'ach It was the afternoon of the first evening of Passover and so we had to start thinking about a Seder as we had recorded in

But first, Ben and I continued on our project to get pictures of all of the paperweights by adding these IMG_0747 IMG_0748 IMG_0749 IMG_0750 IMG_0751 IMG_0752 IMG_0753 IMG_0754 IMG_0755 IMG_0756 to the collection before I peeled the apples IMG_0757 leaving these ruins in the disposal IMG_0758 and added the carrot to the coup IMG_0759 as Suzanne saluted with her cast IMG_0760 and we began the Cuis-ing IMG_0761 with added wine IMG_0762 and another set of quick pulses IMG_0763 and a stir IMG_0764 until we had charoset IMG_0765 you would want to eat.

Next Harry Cummins stopped by IMG_0766 to drop off Sam and Ben gave his birthday present IMG_0767 and even in the second take IMG_0768 couldn't keep his eyes opened.

Jane and I headed off to Staples IMG_0769 among other errands but got caught in traffic by this beautiful tree IMG_0770 behind this car IMG_0771 that ever so slowly brought us along the cemetery IMG_0772 IMG_0773 until this crossing guard IMG_0774 finally got things going for us.

Back at home, the food was cooking IMG_0775 the table was set IMG_0776 with the new vase IMG_0777 Suzanne had gotten and the 3 matzot IMG_0778 were ready to go as we admired the horseradish root IMG_0779 and the special olive oil IMG_0780 that we knew not to use for cooking as Ann IMG_0781 IMG_0782 told us about life in New York and Jane IMG_0783 admired the matzah IMG_0784 and macaroons IMG_0785 Ann had brought while Ben IMG_0786 went out and brought in the mail. Sarah and Devon arrived IMG_0787 IMG_0788 and started melting chocolate IMG_0789 for the strawberries while we pulled out this cheese IMG_0790 which appeared better sans flash IMG_0791 and opened it for tasting. Ben IMG_0792 emerged and we left the matzah ball soup aside IMG_0793 and headed to the table IMG_0794 IMG_0795 IMG_0796 where we read from the haggadah ( No, Ben is not asleep ) IMG_0797 and then had chicken IMG_0798 as a main course as the table flowed IMG_0799 with food and my plate grew from this IMG_0800 to this IMG_0801 even as Jane was clearing her plate IMG_0802 and Ben IMG_0803 was practicing IMG_0804 IMG_0805 IMG_0806 with the juggling balls he got even as he was unable to keep them in the air.

For dessert, we had macaroons IMG_0807 and fruit IMG_0808 and after admiring the dirty plates in the dishwasher IMG_0809 we brought out the chocolate cake IMG_0810 and chocolate covered strawberries IMG_0811 so that my dessert plate could look like this IMG_0812 as Suzanne ate at the opposite end of the table IMG_0813 IMG_0814 and we took the required pictures of Jane's foot IMG_0815 IMG_0816 for posterity. Next, Sarah produced her old and new driver's licenses IMG_0817 IMG_0818 for all to admire (though the camera did not do a good job) and Jane took this sequence of pictures of Suzanne and I in our Egyptian garb IMG_0819 IMG_0820 IMG_0821 IMG_0822 IMG_0823 IMG_0824 IMG_0825 IMG_0826 IMG_0827 IMG_0828 IMG_0829 IMG_0830 so that we too could feel that with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm we too were brought out from Egypt. ../../Sabbat/2005/04.14-21.05AWeekofActivity/ A week including people, anniversary dinner, and life ... It had been a delightful week of weather with each day a little bit nicer than the one before. So, of course, people were out walking and on Thursday (4/14) on the way home from work. I ran into the Sandersons IMG_0651 pushing their baby (eyes opened for the first time) IMG_0652 towards town. Then, on Saturday (4/16) as I made my way home, there were John Sully and 2 friends IMG_0653 cleaning things up at Trinity. This inspired Ben and me to start our project of photographing the paperweights IMG_0654 IMG_0655 IMG_0656 IMG_0657 IMG_0658 IMG_0659 IMG_0660 IMG_0661 IMG_0662 IMG_0663 IMG_0664 though the final images will appear elsewhere (on the paperweight page).

The next day, I took Ben to Flemington for a chess tournament. If you look carefully at this picture IMG_0665 you see this image of him hard at work. Afterwards, the award ceremony began IMG_0666 and Ben waited IMG_0667 until he was called up IMG_0668 to receive the trophy IMG_0669 for 1st place (4 wins, no losses) in the grade 4-12 section. An exciting time.

We came home because it was time to celebrate our anniversary. We gathered the clan including these respectable people with an umbrella IMG_0670 IMG_0671 and this younger man who replaced me IMG_0672 IMG_0673 IMG_0674 and then just Sarah and Ed posed IMG_0675 as Ben was amused IMG_0676 as we got ready to enter Rats IMG_0677 for a celebratory dinner. I had a martini IMG_0678 which threw off the next picture IMG_0679 but my plate IMG_0680 was quite nice before it was removed to make room for the radish soup IMG_0681 and other courses IMG_0682 IMG_0683 as the others had fish IMG_0684 and chicken IMG_0685 and my ravioli IMG_0686 and rissoto IMG_0687 kept me happy even as Jane dug into her filet mignon IMG_0688 as the bread person posed IMG_0689 which made the waiter IMG_0690 want his picture taken too.

Then it was time for individual pictures, so Jane posed IMG_0691 Ben posed IMG_0692 and then got amused IMG_0693 Ed posed IMG_0694 Sarah posed IMG_0695 and I took this self portrait IMG_0696 before capturing Suzanne IMG_0697 and letting someone else capture me IMG_0698 in the family group.

Sarah next did an excellent job of recording a trip to the lady's room IMG_0699 IMG_0700 IMG_0701 IMG_0702 IMG_0703 IMG_0704 IMG_0705 complete with plants IMG_0706 in the stall.

After dinner, it was time to celebrate Sarah's birthday and so we started the ritual of present opening IMG_0707 IMG_0708 with a display of earrings IMG_0709 and a large bow IMG_0710 and then more presents IMG_0711 IMG_0712 IMG_0713 with a break for complimentary pastries IMG_0714 and more presents IMG_0715 IMG_0716 IMG_0717 IMG_0718 until the hands IMG_0719 were tired and the desserts IMG_0720 IMG_0721 including fries and shake IMG_0722 came along with the bill IMG_0723 IMG_0724 which showed that a night out with the family isn't as cheap as it used to be.

After visiting with some people in the garden IMG_0725 IMG_0726 IMG_0727 and seeing the mother and child IMG_0728 we admired some sculptures int he dark IMG_0729 IMG_0730 before having some tea IMG_0731 with the old timers and taking one last picture IMG_0732 with which to close off the celebration.

On Monday (4/18), there was a camera crew at the bus stop IMG_0733 to record Seminary parents who take their kids to the bus. Then at the end of the day, Meredith's car IMG_0734 was loaded with balloons for Sarah's real birthday. While we weren't invited to the celebration, Devon Louise Cecilia Wessman-Smerdon took these pictures IMG_100_2594 IMG_100_2595 IMG_100_2596 IMG_100_2597 IMG_100_2598 IMG_100_2599 IMG_100_2602 so we feel like we were there.

On Tuesday (4/19), a faculty group came to lunch IMG_0735 but took a while IMG_0736 to pose as Left to Right: Josh Goldstein (Woodrow Wilson School and Sociology), Alexandre d'Aspremont (Operations Research and Financial Engineering), Michael Bender (Geosciences), Katherine Newman (Woodrow Wilson School and Sociology), Mona Singh (Computer Science), Gaetana Marrone-Puglia (French and Italian), Susan Taylor (Art Museum). Then, on the way home from work, I saw the new bust of Albert IMG_0737 who was chatting with the man with the newspaper IMG_0738 as I went to vote in the school board election.

On Wednesday (4/20), Spencer Meredith '53 IMG_0739 and Mary Baum (Development) IMG_0740 came to discuss the Dominican Republic and later in the day, Sabine Kastner (Psychology) IMG_0741 came to explain how she could push neuroscience in a direction that would allow them to not put electrodes in my brain.

Thursday (4/21) began with coffee with Marsha Gilman IMG_0742 after which I met with Ron Witte IMG_0743 and Sarah Whiting IMG_0744 whoa re job candidates in Architecture. I ended the work day in a discussion with Slobodan Curcic (Art and Archaeology) IMG_0745 before heading out. On my eventual way home, I ran into Jan Woods IMG_0746 on Nassau Street. ../../Sabbat/2005/04.09-11.05FacultyParty/ Faculty Party, etc. It was Saturday April 9 and a beautiful day, so we decided to walk to what we perceive as the end of Nassau Street and back. Along the way, I took an obligatory phone booth picture IMG_0613 involving Ben.

The next day was party day. We were having a crowd of hundreds (well, maybe 100) and so it was good that Don IMG_0614 was starting to get things ready and the wait staff IMG_0615 IMG_0616 was prepared as the backyard bar IMG_0617 was set, the flowers hung IMG_0618 and the table set IMG_0619 not far from the planter IMG_0620 and other arrangements IMG_0621 IMG_0622 IMG_0623 even as the inside bar IMG_0624 got ready and glasses IMG_0625 were unpacked. The family room IMG_0626 will never be this clean again and despite our efforts at organizing the porch IMG_0627 IMG_0628 no one went out there. The kitchen had flowers IMG_0629 so I went to put on the baseball tie IMG_0630 IMG_0631 IMG_0632 as more flowers (or flower pictures) IMG_0633 emerged and the herbs IMG_0634 and other arrangements IMG_0635 came to the kitchen while the buffet IMG_0636 was set and the veggies and dips IMG_0637 and arrangements for hummus IMG_0638 and the bar IMG_0639 were set so that the cheeses IMG_0640 and hummus IMG_0641 could come out. The display was beautiful IMG_0642 but I never got to taste it though the bartender IMG_0643 did share his wares with me but first the food truck IMG_0644 had to offload IMG_0645 so that Jane and Chef Larry IMG_0646 IMG_0647 could get together for her chicken tenders IMG_0648 which didn't seem to be served to others.

On Monday April 11 on the way home from work, I ran into 3 generations of Sanderson's IMG_0649 having a picnic as the baby slept IMG_0650 more or less. ../../Sabbat/2005/04.06-07.05EndowedDinnerEtc/ Chaired Dinner, etc. It was to be a time of celebration. On Wednesday, April 6, Sarah Kay IMG_0592 who we are hoping to recruit from Cambridge for our French and Italian department appeared and then Kirk Unruh IMG_0593 and Jody Friedman IMG_0594 from Development came to prep me for the next night. Later, Liz Lunbeck IMG_0595 from History came for a discussion.

The next day, I began my eating with a faculty lunch for IMG_0596 IMG_0597 Left to Right: Tali Mendelberg (Politics), Martin Kern (East Asian Studies), Antoine Kahn (Electrical Engineering), Phil Holmes (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and PACM), David Botstein (LSIIG and Molecular Biology), Peter Meyers (Physics)

At the end of the day, old friends came to visit including Mark IMG_0598 and Fran Berman, IMG_0599 a computer scientist from UCSD who used to (as in 20 years ago) go to the same conferences as me and their son Nick IMG_0600 who was checking Princeton out.

That night was the dinner for endowed professorships and I sat with Susan Goldman S'86 IMG_0601 and Eddie Niestat '86 IMG_0602 across from Arnold Fraiman '47 and Peter Kelly '05 IMG_0603 and the organist and the economics student IMG_0604 and next to Edward Goodnow '47 IMG_0605 who had endowed the Frederick L. After lunch, I returned home where the party table IMG_0452 the party balloons IMG_0453 the party boy IMG_0454 the party chess game IMG_0455 the party boy's sister IMG_0456 and her friend IMG_0457 and the party boy's mother IMG_0458 were waiting for the guests to arrive.

First came Jeremy and Sam IMG_0459 IMG_0460 who headed out with Ben to start the basketball game IMG_0461 IMG_0462 IMG_0463 IMG_0464 IMG_0465 which became part of the board game party. As I recorded the welcome window IMG_0466 I recalled previous Ben birthday's including

2004 and 2004 party

2003
and 2001 birthday and 2001 party
and 2000 with the sad observation that in 2002 my camera was broken and there was a shortage of new digital cameras.

at which point it was time to return to the basketball game IMG_0467 IMG_0468 IMG_0469 IMG_0470 IMG_0471 as Betsy and Bobby Sands IMG_0472 arrived and the game grew IMG_0473 IMG_0474 IMG_0475 IMG_0476 IMG_0477 IMG_0478 though I took a break for a self portrait IMG_0479 as others arrived and played IMG_0480 IMG_0481 and the recycling IMG_0482 rested and the cake (not a cake! but brownies) IMG_0483 was on display and Josephine IMG_0484 finished up as Ben Strauss IMG_0485 IMG_0486 joined the game IMG_0487 IMG_0488 for my artistic picture of the ball on stones IMG_0489 as a larger game IMG_0490 made room for Nate IMG_0491 who brought this card IMG_0492 and came with Hannah and Laura IMG_0493 The game continued IMG_0494 even as spectators arrived IMG_0495 and wondered whether to call fouls IMG_0496 but instead we brought people in for board games IMG_0497 IMG_0498 as the shoes were neatly lined up IMG_0499 to Suzanne's amusement IMG_0500 as the monopoly phase of the party IMG_0501 IMG_0502 IMG_0503 IMG_0504 IMG_0505 IMG_0506 progressed as Jane and John IMG_0507 drove off IMG_0508 to get the hoagies and Audrey IMG_0509 appeared to drop off Joel IMG_0510 so that the games IMG_0511 IMG_0512 could continue even as Sarah arrived home and opened IMG_0513 and displayed IMG_0514 IMG_0515 her Race for the Cure special edition shoes. After a few more rolls of the dice IMG_0516 IMG_0517 the games were over and it was hoagie time IMG_0518 as the guests assembled around the table IMG_0519 IMG_0520 and Sarah ate IMG_0521 while telling stories. The views around the table IMG_0522 IMG_0523 IMG_0524 IMG_0525 amused Jane and her friends IMG_0526 as we took one last photo IMG_0527 and then set up the basketball under the lights game IMG_0528 before brining out the cake IMG_0529 IMG_0530 IMG_0531 getting ready IMG_0532 blowing out the candles IMG_0533 and enjoying the decorations IMG_0534 as Ben got IMG_0535 and opened IMG_0536 the one gift that would be relevant to the party. Afterwards, some watched the Incredibles and some played Apples to Apples. Being in the latter group, I gave up my role as photo journalist.

Three days later, it was Ben's real birthday, I began my celebration by meeting with Sukru Hanioglu IMG_0537 of Near Eastern Studies and Ted Rabb IMG_0538 of History. Coming home to see Ben IMG_0539 IMG_0540 int he birthday hat was a step forward as the decorations IMG_0541 IMG_0542 IMG_0543 were set and Ben opened the diet snapple IMG_0544 for Suzanne IMG_0545 as we ate the pasta IMG_0546 and Ben performed IMG_0547 IMG_0548 IMG_0549 to the amusement of Jane IMG_0550 Suzanne IMG_0551 and me IMG_0552 IMG_0553 IMG_0554 who didn't seem to get a good self portrait and needed help IMG_0555 to fit intot he frame. Next was the present opening IMG_0556 IMG_0557 IMG_0558 IMG_0559 IMG_0560 IMG_0561 IMG_0562 IMG_0563 IMG_0564 IMG_0565 IMG_0566 IMG_0567 IMG_0568 IMG_0569 IMG_0570 IMG_0571 IMG_0572 IMG_0573 IMG_0574 IMG_0575 IMG_0576 with a predominant theme of basketball IMG_0577 and gift cards IMG_0578 IMG_0579 keeping the balloons happy IMG_0580 as more gift cards IMG_0581 IMG_0582 IMG_0583 IMG_0584 IMG_0585 appeared along with this elegant birthday card IMG_0586 with a barely readable message IMG_0587 as we assembled a few cards IMG_0588 looked at a gift IMG_0589 or two IMG_0590 IMG_0591 and set things aside waiting for Ben's twelfth birthday. ../../Sabbat/2005/03.23-30.05LunchDinnerKlocks/ Various parts of life around Easter Sunday On March 23 at the first lunch after spring break, the attendees were IMG_0383 IMG_0384 Left to Right: Brandice Canes-Wrone (Politics and Woodrow Wilson School), Sanjeev Arora (Computer Science), Cornel West (Religion), Emily Pronin (Psychology and Woodrow Wilson School), Sophie Gee (English), Claire Kremen (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology), Philip Nord (History)

THe next day, I had a Kodak (or actually a Canon) moment on the way home from work when I ran into Ms. Sanderson's baby IMG_0385 IMG_0386 and her parents IMG_0387 IMG_0388 and recorded all of them on film.

Friday, Jane and I went to see Kasia Hertz IMG_0389 in the Tiger Card Office where she set things up IMG_0390 to take this picture of me IMG_0391 so that I would have an ID that didn't look like my caveman phase IMG_0392 and then Jane IMG_0393 was processed by Kasia IMG_0394 so that we could begin our journey to Philadelphia where we parked the car IMG_0395 and went to Smokey Joe's for lunch IMG_0396 where I captured this sign for my collection IMG_0397 before we took the tour of UPenn.

On the way home, we stopped at an Italian restaurant in Larenceville that Suzanne IMG_0398 recommended against Ben's IMG_0399 better judgment though Jane and I IMG_0400 were happy when the salad came IMG_0401 and was properly lit IMG_0402 thought Ben kept hiding IMG_0403 and Suzanne was caught unawares IMG_0404 as we took a series of photos IMG_0405 IMG_0406 IMG_0407 IMG_0408 IMG_0409 IMG_0410 IMG_0411 IMG_0412 IMG_0413 IMG_0414 IMG_0415 aimed at getting a good picture of Ben and not just his water glass IMG_0416 IMG_0417 as Suzanne IMG_0418 got ready for a drink IMG_0419 and her water glass IMG_0420 IMG_0421 almost got Ben posed IMG_0422 thought he hid IMG_0423 even as we removed the patriotism IMG_0424 from the tour Suzanne and Ben had taken. Ben IMG_0425 got his meatball sub IMG_0426 which raised his spirits IMG_0427 as he ate IMG_0428 and drank IMG_0429 and our pizza arrived IMG_0430 with too much garlic on it.

On Monday, March 28, back at work, Bo Honore IMG_0431 agreed to chair the economics department which started me on a week of watching the Klockenbrinks construct (or maybe deconstruct). On Tuesday we saw how the saw had cut their house IMG_0432 and what had become of the kitchen IMG_0433 IMG_0434 IMG_0435 with guarded passage to the dining room IMG_0436 and on Tuesday we stood on their kitchen (after removal) IMG_0437 IMG_0438 and looked out at the dirt IMG_0439 and the carriage house IMG_0440 where the destruction IMG_0441 IMG_0442 was in process IMG_0443 IMG_0444 for all to see. Tony submitted these pictures IMG_Tony1 IMG_Tony2 as a lame excuse for not hosting the poker game. ../../Sabbat/2005/03.05-11.05PeopleJaneBday/ Jane's 17th birthday It was Saturday night March 5 and Suzanne IMG_0287 Ben (incognito) IMG_0288 and I IMG_0289 (better self portrait) IMG_0290 got our programs IMG_0291 and waited IMG_0292 until Around 8 IMG_0293 IMG_0294 IMG_0295 IMG_0296 IMG_0297 IMG_0298 IMG_0299 IMG_0300 took the stage at Market Fair. After they sang, we got pictures of Jane alone IMG_0301 and with friends IMG_0302 IMG_0303 IMG_0304 IMG_0305 said goodbye to Suzanne IMG_0306 and headed off to watch Princeton play basketball (not a pretty sight this season).

A few days later, we celebrated Jane's birthday as we'd done for the previous 5 years:

2004
2003
2002
2001
2000
though she does seem to get older each year. Jane put on her gift sweatshirt

IMG_0307 and we surveyed the decorations IMG_0308 IMG_0309 IMG_0310 IMG_0311 including those that need to last until April 17 and took the birthday picture IMG_0312 before admiring the cheeses from Dean and DeLuca IMG_0313 and making sure the table was set IMG_0314 IMG_0315 and that Jane had her magic wand IMG_0316 Ben had his food IMG_0317 and Suzanne IMG_0318 had her wine IMG_0319 IMG_0320 while the vegetables IMG_0321 made my plate IMG_0322 feel like it wanted to be full IMG_0323 as I started to eat IMG_0324 and then recorded the event IMG_0325 as the cake appeared IMG_0326 IMG_0327 and after the candles were blown out we could take cake pictures IMG_0328 IMG_0329 while Jane was excited IMG_0330 as Sarah IMG_0331 and Ed IMG_0332 watched and Jane IMG_0333 cut some cake IMG_0334 for me to eat IMG_0335 which inspired a group of very bad self portraits IMG_0336 IMG_0337 IMG_0338 IMG_0339 IMG_0340 while I recorded the fan IMG_0341 and the presents IMG_0342 IMG_0343 IMG_0344 IMG_0345 IMG_0346 IMG_0347 IMG_0348 IMG_0349 IMG_0350 were opened until Kaylen arrived IMG_0351 IMG_0352 for the opening of even more presents IMG_0353 IMG_0354 IMG_0355 IMG_0356 IMG_0357 IMG_0358 IMG_0359 IMG_0360 IMG_0361 IMG_0362 IMG_0363 IMG_0364 IMG_0365 IMG_0366 IMG_0367 IMG_0368 IMG_0369 IMG_0370 IMG_0371 IMG_0372 IMG_0373 IMG_0374 IMG_0375 after which Lucy and Fred IMG_0376 arrived so that the OC could be watched IMG_0377 IMG_0378 from the couch as Ben read jokes IMG_0379 and Suzanne IMG_0380 took in the scene.

The next day, March 11, Boris Russ '06 came to pose with the picture he painted for my office IMG_0381 IMG_0382 ../../Sabbat/2005/03.01-03.05ThisWeek/ This week -- People and Snow On March 1, Ravi Sethi *73 IMG_0263 came to visit and took these pictures of me Dobkin1BySethi Dobkin2BySethi before we went off to an enjoyable lunch. Later that day, Mike Celia IMG_0264 from Civil and Environmental Engineering and Bob Vanderbei IMG_0265 from Operations Research and Financial Engineering came for chairmanly discussions. When I returned home, it was time to record my outfit IMG_0266 IMG_0267 IMG_0268 with my new birthday clothes and for Meredith to try to preempt her birthday IMG_0269 IMG_0270 by wearing the magic hat before Ben took a few pictures of the family room IMG_0271 IMG_0272 and we sent Meredith out, camera in hand, to record the duckling family IMG_0273 IMG_0274 on the steps and the massive snow statue IMG_0275 IMG_0276 IMG_0277 IMG_0278 IMG_0279 IMG_0280 in the back yard.

Two days later, on March 3, I had a faculty lunch for IMG_0281 IMG_0282 Left to Right: Jason Fleischer (Electrical Engineer), Kathleen Davis (English), Frederick Hughson (Molecular Biology), Sarah-Jane Mahieu (History), Miguel Centeno (Sociology and PIIRS), Paul Lansky (Music) and then came home for a picture of my new tie IMG_0283 as Ben decided to take a too close IMG_0284 and too low IMG_0285 picture of the owl which seemed to amuse Suzanne IMG_0286 as the end of the week neared. ../../Sabbat/2005/02.22-26.05TheGates/ The Gates On Tuesday, February 22, Bob Tarjan came to visit IMG_0176 IMG_0177 IMG_0178 and we had an award's ceremony to give him the Pascal Medal. Then, Michelle Christy of ORPA IMG_0179 came for a meeting.

On Thursday February 24, Kevin Wilkes and Peter Soderman IMG_0180 IMG_0181 the people from Quark Park came to talk about how to get things going.

All of this set the stage for a journey to park the car at the train station even though the machine IMG_0182 IMG_0183 didn't seem to want to take our token IMG_0184 for parking until we found the right machine. Then we got on the train IMG_0185 IMG_0186 and took the subway to Columbus Circle where we caught our first glimpse of the Gates IMG_0187 at a distance but first we decided to eat our lunch IMG_0188 IMG_0189 IMG_0190 IMG_0191 at Whole Foods there where we watched IMG_0192 as they made various drinks and once Ben IMG_0193 IMG_0194 finished eating and I tried a self portrait IMG_0195 and recorded the bill and labels IMG_0196 we were ready to venture out and catch our first glimpses IMG_0197 IMG_0198 before crossing the street IMG_0199 and entering the park. IMG_0200 We saw Gates from the side IMG_0201 and then walked through IMG_0202 IMG_0203 before I took a picture of Ben IMG_0204 and he took one of me IMG_0205 and then we looked in various directions IMG_0206 IMG_0207 IMG_0208 before running into Charles Kalmbach and his wife IMG_0209 who took this picture of us IMG_0210 as we climbed up to get this background IMG_0211 for a picture of Ben IMG_0212 as the gates led the way IMG_0213 IMG_0214 to another picture IMG_0215 and the crowd IMG_0216 seemed to be moving IMG_0217 though Ben decided to climb IMG_0218 up IMG_0219 until he got to the top IMG_0220 and turned around IMG_0221 and then we marched on IMG_0222 to the next rock he could climb IMG_0223 but there were more gates IMG_0224 IMG_0225 IMG_0226 IMG_0227 to pass through and more pictures of Ben IMG_0228 and the tree IMG_0229 IMG_0230 and the sign IMG_0231 as we made our way IMG_0232 IMG_0233 IMG_0234 to this structure where Ben took this picture of me IMG_0235 and with some more marching IMG_0236 IMG_0237 and a wait in the line IMG_0238 IMG_0239 we got into the castle IMG_0240 which looked impressive IMG_0241 IMG_0242 and had quite a view IMG_0243 IMG_0244 IMG_0245 that served as a backdrop for pictures I took IMG_0246 IMG_0247 IMG_0248 before a stranger took pictures of both of us IMG_0249 IMG_0250 and we recorded more background IMG_0251 IMG_0252 before marching on IMG_0253 watching the wind get stronger IMG_0254 IMG_0255 and stopped IMG_0256 for a few more pictures IMG_0257 IMG_0258 IMG_0259 before heading tot eh subway IMG_0260 where Ben posed IMG_0261 and then showed off his new hat IMG_0262 on the train home.

The trip was partly inspired by these pictures Sandy J had sent me of their trip to The Gates gates_over_pond Gates_AsciaMark Gates_Kyle before the snows came. ../../Sabbat/2005/02.14-18.05PeopleCruise/ People and a Cruise Day It was Valentine's Day and Nancy's birthday so we had a small celebration IMG_0110 which distracted her IMG_0111 and then proceeded with our discussion.

On February 17, I went out into the hallway and ran into the computer science crowd IMG_0112 Stephen Friedfeld (School of Engineering and Applied Sciences), Bernard Chazelle (Computer Science), Melissa Lawson (Computer Science), Larry Peterson (Computer Science) and took their picture. Later I had a faculty lunch with IMG_0113 IMG_0114 Left to Right: John Hopfield (Molecular Biology), Chiara Nappi (Physics), Hans Halvorsen (Philosophy), Li-Shiuan Peh (Electrical Engineering), Stephen Macedo (University Center for Human Values and Politics), Stan Allen (Architecture)

This all set the context for taking a day off and going to Philadelphia IMG_0115 to see DrLen IMG_0116 who took me to his basement workshop IMG_0117 to see his size 6 machine screws IMG_0118 before I recorded some of his living room decor IMG_0119 IMG_0120 IMG_0121 and we drove in my car to park in Chinatown IMG_0122 where we fed the meter IMG_0123 and then walked to the restaurant IMG_0124 and had hot and sour soup IMG_0125 some with and some without pork and Singapore noodles IMG_0126 and a very good tofu dish IMG_0127 IMG_0128 which made me happy IMG_0129 even in profile IMG_0130 so that we could head off to the Chinese pastry shop which showed its wares IMG_0131 IMG_0132 as I ordered this IMG_0133 and Dr Len had a second pastry IMG_0134 because we were inspired by the Buddha card IMG_0135 they gave us. Next we went to the Jewish Museum IMG_0136 to se the exhibit of Jewish boxers.

From there, we went to visit Burnell and Betsy who have a wonderful collection of glass IMG_0137 IMG_0138 IMG_0139 IMG_0140 IMG_0141 and artwork IMG_0142 and wood carved animal coffee table IMG_0143 and decorated pianos IMG_0144 and marbles IMG_0145 and hands IMG_0146 and arms IMG_0147 and more glass IMG_0148 and more art IMG_0149 IMG_0150 and an ostrich egg IMG_0151 with the galaxy painted on it.

Back at home, Jane IMG_0152 John IMG_0153 Suzanne IMG_0154 and I IMG_0155 also in profile IMG_0156 ate tacos IMG_0157 for dinner.

The next day, we all went to On The Border where Jane and Ben IMG_0158 and Jeremy IMG_0159 the waiters IMG_0160 and Sarah IMG_0161 and Suzanne and I IMG_0162 were ready after a missed profile picture IMG_0163 to have a chicken sandwich IMG_0164 or two IMG_0165 or three IMG_0166 and enchilladas IMG_0167 with salad IMG_0168 and onions IMG_0169 and a quesadilla IMG_0170 before going to the juggling show where we saw Ed and his brother IMG_0171 and the whole Davisson family IMG_0172 IMG_0173 IMG_0174 before seeing Sally Steinberg Brent and Dan Brent IMG_0175 on our way out of Frist. ../../Sabbat/2005/02.07-11.05ThisWeekInPictures/ The week in pictures

So just as I had done in the past I gathered my things and headed out. Was nice to be leaving since the temperature was below 0 and there were 15 inches of snow. On the plane out, I sat next to Margie Fox IMG_0001 and when we landed, Liz Ebel IMG_0002 and Michael Cadden IMG_0003 were there and Liz took this picture of Michael and me IMG_0004 waiting for baggage as we headed to the Mayflower Park where my room IMG_0005 had a mini-kitchen IMG_0006 and a nice bath IMG_0007 not to mention wireless internet. Soon, we drove off to see Jeff Sanderson '81 IMG_0008 and we posed together IMG_0009 in front of the 1492 poster.

After some handoffs of people, I landed in the Paul Allen building at UW where Judy Watson appeared IMG_0010 to check in with Larry Snyder IMG_0011 before he gave me the tour and I captured this picture of the stadium IMG_0012 and this picture of Rainier IMG_0013 on an unusually clear day in Seattle. Next I saw Ed Lazowska IMG_0014 who gave me a tour and we had a chance to chat before heading to the Afghan restaurant IMG_0015 for dinner which involved these salads IMG_0016 IMG_0017 that seemed to amuse Lindsay IMG_0018 before the main courses arrived IMG_0019 IMG_0020 IMG_0021 to our great satisfaction. After dinner, I went back to the Snyders IMG_0022 and had a lovely visit with Larry and Julie including this picture for the T D Cosine menu IMG_0023 surely to come in our next lives.

On Tuesday, we began the day at lunch with Othniel Palomino IMG_0024 who posed with me IMG_0025 IMG_0026 before we headed off to Microsoft for the meeting with Tim Button and Dave Treadwell IMG_0027 and added me IMG_0028 and then Liz IMG_0029 to the Microsoft picture experience. After Microsoft, it was on to Amazon where after some hard discoveries about roads blocked by the freeway, Shirley, Beth and I met with Jeff Wilke '89 IMG_0030 and then Shirley and I met with Elizabeth Korrell and Jeff Bezos '86 being sure to take the relevant pictures of IMG_0031 Beth, Jeff and Shirley IMG_0032 IMG_0033 and then me, Shirley and Jeff. From here it was off to Palo Alto where the room at the Garden Court had a canopied bed IMG_0034 and various accoutrements IMG_0035 to help me sleep IMG_0036 and to keep my feet clean when I awoke.

The next day was the Whitman lunch. Beth Lind agreed to take a few pictures of me with John Little '80 IMG_0037 and Temp Keller '98 IMG_0038 and this picture of the group IMG_0039 before Meg '77 IMG_0040 welcomed us and I watched IMG_0041 as Shirley spoke IMG_0042 and we all admired the floral arrangements IMG_0043 before the luncheon ended. After lunch, I caught up with Josh Ober (Classics AND University Center for Human Values) IMG_0044 for a long cup of coffee. Later I went to dinner with IMG_0045 IMG_0046 Ray Chen '8? , Tom Kessler '86 and Paul Haahr '90.

Thursday morning, Hector Garcia-Molina IMG_0047 came over from Stanford for breakfast and then Jacobo Valdes IMG_0048 joined us leading tot his attempt to take a picture of the three of us IMG_0049 before Jacobo and I went off for a repeat of our walk in March. But this team, the waters were too rough to walk back on the beach. At the end of the walk, we got this guidance of the trail IMG_0050 IMG_0051 about dogs on the trail and this warning IMG_0052 about the water. After the walk we went into Half Moon Bay for IMG_0053 Jacobo's sandwich IMG_0054 and mine and pictures of him IMG_0055 and me IMG_0056 at the place where I learned to take self-profiles when last we were there. After coffee (at the same place) and a shot of the Town Hall, IMG_0057 we went back to the coffee place IMG_0058 to get this picture of me with Shaye Farwell (who remembered our previous picture IMG_0059 and her co-worker who displayed some good ink. Next it was off to the international headquarters of Stop Look Sign where Larry and Miguel IMG_0060 were at work but soon we went to their house where the cat IMG_0061 welcomed us and dinner was salad IMG_0062 and couscous IMG_0063 with vegetables IMG_0064 as I recorded Larry IMG_0065 and Janet IMG_0066 and then did the same IMG_0067 of Larry IMG_0068 and Janet to see if it improved before the ice cream sundaes came IMG_0069 to end the meal.

Friday morning, I returned to Stop Look Sign to say my farewells and the color lady IMG_0070 IMG_0071 was there with Krispy Kremes IMG_0072 which looked better than the box IMG_0073 as I bade farewell to the president and CEO IMG_0074 and to the workers Juan and Pascal IMG_0075 before heading off to Santa Monica and lunch with the Lidows. IMG_0076 I posed with Derek, Diana and Shirley after the good meal and the beautiful house and then headed south. The drive was long because of heavy traffic at the start and then very heavy traffic at San Diego which left me as blurry as Jeanine IMG_0077 who later posed with her helper IMG_0078 as she brought me this salad IMG_0079 which lifted my spirits.

Saturday began with an elegant breakfast IMG_0080 and then I took a picture of the orchid IMG_0081 as Dan watched IMG_0082 before we headed off to See's candy IMG_0083 IMG_0084 so that Dansyl could send some chocolate to New Jersey before we convened for IMG_0085 a lunch that was every bit as elegant as breakfast. After going to see Motorcycle Diaries (quite a good movie) we went to dinner where Kelly IMG_0086 was our waiter and Syl had crabcakes IMG_0087 Dan had duck IMG_0088 and I had King Salmon (hold the salmon) IMG_0089 which made for a good dining experience.

The next morning, I dropped off my Avis car IMG_0090 and followed their sign IMG_0091 to the terminal where I captured this sculpture IMG_0092 before eating fruit IMG_0093 and French toast IMG_0094 and many too many pastries on the plane ride home. ../../Sabbat/2005/01.18-23.05PeopleSnow/ Some people, then the snow It was January 18 and Ben Elman (History AND East Asian Studies) IMG_1050 came to visit. Then I went to lunch with Walter Lippincott (Princeton University Press) IMG_1051 before coming home to see Jane IMG_1052 relaxing on the couch. The next day, January 19, I was very excited to see the medal IMG_1053 IMG_1054 pin preparation for the award ceremony. But first I had a visit from IMG_1055 Mike Jennings (German),Eduardo Cadava (English) and Hal Foster (Art and Archaeology) IMG_1056 and Beatriz Colomina (Architecture) whose train was delayed. Then I met with IMG_1057 Walter Hinderer (German) and IMG_1058 IMG_1059 Froma Zeitlin (Classics AND Comparative Literature AND Judaic Studies) before it was time for the award ceremony. Since the recipient was there, we improvised IMG_1060 in the best of ways. On the way home, I met Sally Osmer IMG_1061 who is the head of the Crisis Ministry.

On Sunday January 23, we awoke to lots (15" worth) of snow on the driveway and so the shoveling began. Ben spread the salt IMG_1062 IMG_1063 along the path IMG_1064 and Sarah IMG_1065 and then Ben and Sarah IMG_1066 showed our excitement about the game that was going to be such a dissapointment later. The Hutner-Flemer's IMG_1067 were sledding down the street as we observed our sidewalk IMG_1068 and the Odyssey IMG_1069 IMG_1070 that looked like it would never be cleared. Ben IMG_1071 admired the house IMG_1072 as the sledders IMG_1073 IMG_1074 returned and we continued our walk to town. Stockton Street IMG_1075 was quite something as I walked behind Ben and Sarah IMG_1076 IMG_1077 IMG_1078 as we made our way past this water valve IMG_1079 at the seminary IMG_1080 and this tree IMG_1081 and the house that couldn't be approached IMG_1082 and the gate IMG_1083 that couldn't be opened as the snow was all over IMG_1084 everything. Morven IMG_1085 wasn't plowed but its neighbor was IMG_1086 and as we walked the path IMG_1087 we knew that this car IMG_1088 IMG_1089 would have a hard time getting out. Next we made our way onto Nassau Street IMG_1090 IMG_1091 IMG_1092 and past the newspaper stands IMG_1093 when a car went by IMG_1094 and we dug in to find the Kramer's brick IMG_1095 on our first try. On Witherspoon Street we watched this plow IMG_1096 work its way in IMG_1097 to the curb IMG_1098 as Ben discovered this ice rock IMG_1099 and SUbway was closed IMG_1100 and the bread at The Ferry House IMG_1101 looked like it would have a wait. Spring Street IMG_1102 was desserted as Sarah made her way IMG_1103 to the plowed mountain IMG_1104 and posed at half its height IMG_1105 as Hulfish Street IMG_1106 IMG_1107 had its own mountains IMG_1108 to climb. All of this called for a good meal. Ben IMG_1109 IMG_1110 IMG_1111 IMG_1112 settled in at Zorba's Brother's as I got this collection sign IMG_1113 and hot chocolate and decaf IMG_1114 arrived with cream IMG_1115 which didn't photograph well. This inspired Sarah to take a few pictures IMG_1116 IMG_1117 before expanding the lens and using white balance to improve on what I had done IMG_1118 IMG_1119 IMG_1120 and even to tweak the settings IMG_1121 to make the cream greenish. After Ben finished stuying the menu IMG_1122 I got my veggie burger IMG_1123 he got his burger IMG_1124 and Sarah got her chicken sandwich IMG_1125 all of which fortified us for the walk home. En route, we crossed the street IMG_1126 and stopped among the crowds IMG_1127 who wanted a picture IMG_1128 of Nassau Hall though few of them captured this buried piece of equipment IMG_1129 or this newspaper stand IMG_1130 under the snow. ../../Sabbat/2005/01.05-12.05Tortola/ A trip to Tortola It was the start of a new year and time to think about a trip to a warmer place but before I could think of going anywhere, I had to take a few pictures in the office. So, I did on January 5 when I captured Dan Garber from Philosophy IMG_0598 Molly Baker the new temp in our office IMG_0599 and Ted Cox IMG_0600 from Molecular Biology who brought an interesting idea with him that will just be too hard to do.

Then, it was time to depart for warmer climes as we had done in
2004
and
2003
so we said good bye to Ben IMG_0601 and Jane IMG_0602 as Suzanne gathered her things IMG_0603 and the limo driver appeared IMG_0604 to load us into the car IMG_0605 and go pick up the Kramers IMG_0606 as we drove through the darkness IMG_0607 which was almost dark in the car as well as the driver provided us with some unique memories by not knowing how to turn on the lights and not having enough money (or E-Z-Pass) for the tolls. But we did get to the airport IMG_0608 and celebrated passing security IMG_0609 by stopping for coffee IMG_0610 before boarding the plane where I took this self portrait IMG_0611 and this picture of Suzanne IMG_0612 as we headed off IMG_0613 and my meal IMG_0614 looked better than Suzanne's IMG_0615 even in good light IMG_0616 though both benefited IMG_0617 from being buried. Before we knew it, we were looking down on San Juan IMG_0618 IMG_0619 and stretching the wing IMG_0620 because the runway was approaching IMG_0621 for our landing IMG_0622 and we found ourselves in the air terminal IMG_0623 where this map IMG_0624 told us where we might go as the American Airlines gate IMG_0625 told us how we'd get there though we'd have time to explore the shops IMG_0626 and walk the corridors IMG_0627 into and out of yet another shop IMG_0628 as I paused for a self portrait IMG_0629 and a profile IMG_0630 and another try IMG_0631 while Suzanne and Peter found a champagne at a good price IMG_0632 before we made our way to Domino's pizza IMG_0633 where the individual pan pies were waiting IMG_0634 but the service was painfully slow though we did get back to Seva IMG_0635 and Suzanne IMG_0636 so that Peter IMG_0637 and I could enjoy our water IMG_0638 and pizza IMG_0639 before heading back through the gate IMG_0640 to boarding IMG_0641 even as our luggage IMG_0642 got on the front of the plane for the hop to Beef Island Airport. The view looked good IMG_0643 as we got off the plane IMG_0644 at the airport building IMG_0645 and took the requisite picture of the airport sign IMG_0646 even as our plane was being refueled IMG_0647 and we waited in line for immigration IMG_0648 and then customs IMG_0649 before this woman IMG_0650 got us ready IMG_0651 to check out the local license plates IMG_0652 as our car was being brought forth IMG_0653 to ferry us around the island.

On the trip to the hotel, I proved IMG_0654 IMG_0655 IMG_0656 that a flash doesn't work through a car window as I tried to capture images of the Xmas directions at the rotary but instead ... At the hotel, the desk clerk IMG_0657 checked us in but then posed for a better picture IMG_0658 so that we could get to our room and I could notice that we overlooked the pool IMG_0659 as I tried to place myself in the room IMG_0660 IMG_0661 which had nice space IMG_0662 IMG_0663 and a semi-functional bathroom IMG_0664 even as Suzanne rested IMG_0665 while we waited for dinner.

Dinner began with the clinking of glasses of the drink they called the painkiller IMG_0666 which amused Suzanne IMG_0667 and Seva IMG_0668 and me IMG_0669 as I admired the plates IMG_0670 and ate my salad IMG_0671 as Suzanne had her fish IMG_0672 and the coffee IMG_0673 closed the meal as we wandered off to see our first palm tree IMG_0674 of the trip and viewed the lap lanes IMG_0675 IMG_0676 in the pool.

Saturday morning we woke up and watched the wedding pictures start IMG_0677 as Peter, Seva and Suzanne IMG_0678 IMG_0679 and then Suzanne, Seva and Peter IMG_0680 gathered on the beach while I tried to get a picture of myself IMG_0681 though I seemed to have lost some of my touch IMG_0682 from previous trips. So we checked the map IMG_0683 and then headed back to breakfast IMG_0684 where the waitress IMG_0685 informed me that they had no granola so that I would have raisin bread French toast IMG_0686 as Suzanne had her eggs and sausage IMG_0687 Peter had his pancakes IMG_0688 with the wonderful rum butter and Seva had her toast IMG_0689 which prepared us for a walk on the beach where we came across a coconut and I took pictures of Seva IMG_0690 IMG_0691 and she took these pictures of me IMG_0692 IMG_0693 before we headed into the jungle IMG_0694 through the brush IMG_0695 and past the branches IMG_0696 to the view of the pond IMG_0697 and the century plant IMG_0698 before heading back to the beach to look for artifacts IMG_0699 as we made our way along the beach IMG_0700 and over the rocks IMG_0701 IMG_0702 to the sand IMG_0703 IMG_0704 that brought us back IMG_0705 to the hotel pool where Peter IMG_0706 went slowly IMG_0707 down the slide IMG_0708 into the water and climbed out IMG_0709 so that we could gather in the car and drive to Smuggler's Cove IMG_0710 over these muddy roads IMG_0711 and take warning IMG_0712 as we observed that the most educated Tortolans IMG_0713 do not gather the trash there. We were greeted by a clothing shop IMG_0714 as the beach beckoned IMG_0715 IMG_0716 and once we got past the sellers IMG_0717 we checked the water IMG_0718 as I lay down with this view up IMG_0719 IMG_0720 and this view to the side IMG_0721 which made me feel quite relaxed IMG_0722 even as Suzanne came back IMG_0723 step IMG_0724 by step IMG_0725 from her beach explorations with these treasures IMG_0726 and we passed the bar IMG_0727 and the clothes IMG_0728 to head back to the car IMG_0729 off the beach IMG_0730 and head back to the hotel where overlooking the tennis courts IMG_0731 we visited the pool bar IMG_0732 and I made my way IMG_0733 to the slide IMG_0734 and into the water IMG_0735 and back IMG_0736 though the record shows the drinks IMG_0737 IMG_0738 we had and our happy faces IMG_0739 IMG_0740 IMG_0741 IMG_0742 but no splash from my slide ride.

After observing the proper cautions IMG_0743 we headed to the Sugar Mill for dinner where we were greeting with this onion treat IMG_0744 was presented compliments of the house as I took a few tries IMG_0745 IMG_0746 IMG_0747 IMG_0748 to be able to show that our places were set with eight pieces of silver as we ordered good wine IMG_0749 and enjoyed the dipping sauce for the breads IMG_0750 before the group toast IMG_0751 as the hors d'ouveres and salad IMG_0752 IMG_0753 IMG_0754 IMG_0755 came before the main courses of empanadas IMG_0756 and fish IMG_0757 which was a little cold. After a visit to the bathroom where there was this colorful basin IMG_0758 and this collection sign IMG_0759 we settled for dessert of home made ice cream -- banana, watermelon and coconut IMG_0760 from a second view as well IMG_0761 which made us want their recipe. On the way home, we stopped at the Bomba Shack to see when the full moon was IMG_0762 and to record the shack decorations IMG_0763 IMG_0764 though filming inside was not allowed so I just took my own picture IMG_0765 and we headed off into the night.

Sunday morning, we noted the view IMG_0766 from our villa IMG_0767 as Suzanne had her fruit salad IMG_0768 sans hot sauce IMG_0769 and Seva had her cereal IMG_0770 while I miraculously had granola IMG_0771 before the rains came IMG_0772 as we chatted with this British couple IMG_0773 who were getting ready to depart. Back in the room, Suzanne read IMG_0774 as the rain water hit the pool IMG_0775 and puddles formed IMG_0776 by the golf course. We decided to drive around the island and headed to Fisherman's Cay where the views of the Caribbean were nice IMG_0777 as waves splashed in IMG_0778 and Suzanne gathered shells IMG_0779 while the scene got darker IMG_0780 on the deserted beach IMG_0781 as I checked the water IMG_0782 IMG_0783 Peter studied the map IMG_0784 and through this view IMG_0785 Suzanne showed off her finds IMG_0786 IMG_0787 IMG_0788 IMG_0789 before we headed for West End where the cell phones worked IMG_0790 and a boat sat ready for action IMG_0791 so we decided to drive to Road Town and explore. Once in Road Town, we passed a shop IMG_0792 and then went into the grocery store where we found cheese IMG_0793 and even the ever elusive Gouda cheese IMG_0794 before deciding not to go to the barber/braid shop IMG_0795 but rather got back in the car IMG_0796 and ate peanuts IMG_0797 as we continued our exploring until we reached Rudy's Bar IMG_0798 and took pictures of their sign IMG_0799 and license plates IMG_0800 IMG_0801 before checking the car IMG_0802 and driving off from K's Beauty Supply IMG_0803 for Brewer's Beach where the bar was closed IMG_0804 but roosters IMG_0805 IMG_0806 IMG_0807 IMG_0808 IMG_0809 were all over their side of the beach and even when we crossed the divider IMG_0810 we saw a few on the other side IMG_0811 IMG_0812 IMG_0813 IMG_0814 amid the nice sea scene IMG_0815 and more roosters IMG_0816 IMG_0817 IMG_0818 and a camp site IMG_0819 before we departed for Cane Garden Beach where Peter IMG_0820 Seva IMG_0821 and Suzanne IMG_0822 discovered the tire swing IMG_0823 against the beach backdrop IMG_0824 IMG_0825 by the bar IMG_0826 and eventually decided to go for a swing IMG_0827 IMG_0828 before we headed back to the hotel and our bottle of champagne (eat your heart out ... ) IMG_0829 as we watched rain fall into the pool IMG_0830 and assembled around the bottle IMG_0831 some cheese and crackers IMG_0832 from our excursion into town. Peter removed the wrapping IMG_0833 and gripped the cork IMG_0834 and removed it IMG_0835 and poured IMG_0836 for the group toast IMG_0837 that made Peter IMG_0838 Seva IMG_0839 Suzanne IMG_0840 and me IMG_0841 happy and made the sky begin to clear IMG_0842 as the Merrill Lynch people IMG_0843 gathered at the pool bar and we decided to head off for dinner.

Due to some confusion about the current year, we were not able to go to our first pick of restaurants and so went to Fat Hog Bob's where we had the specialty of the house drink IMG_0844 and salt fish patties (because of the rain) IMG_0845 and pumpkin soup IMG_0846 before blackened grouper IMG_0847 chicken IMG_0848 and salad IMG_0849 topped off by their home made ice cream IMG_0850 and a unique experience with a 19 year old girl being locked in the men's room that amused us for the ride home.

Monday morning we woke up to sunny skies IMG_0851 and went for a walk on the beach IMG_0852 before Suzanne IMG_0853 and I IMG_0854 decided to head to breakfast where she had a fritata IMG_0855 and I had French toast (of French bread) IMG_0856 covered with rum butter IMG_0857 and then some of her fritata covered with hot sauce IMG_0858 as I experimented IMG_0859 and then got right the self portrait of me and a friend IMG_0860 IMG_0861 to conclude our meal. We drove off towards Brewers Bay Beach passing this cow IMG_0862 IMG_0863 at the Bomba Shack watching the surfers IMG_0864 and this cow IMG_0865 along the road near the garbage truck IMG_0866 before coming tot he beach and admiring the Xmas creche IMG_0867 IMG_0868 IMG_0869 IMG_0870 IMG_0871 and the public facilities IMG_0872 and obligatory phone booth IMG_0873 that led our way to the beach warning sign IMG_0874 as we walked the beach IMG_0875 and admired it IMG_0876 until some rains came and we decided to try to navigate to the next beach through the ridge IMG_0877 stopping to consult the map IMG_0878 before we got to Josiah's Bay Beach IMG_0879 where we happily settled IMG_0880 and the Kramers took this picture of us IMG_0881 at the beach as we liked the other scenery IMG_0882 and wondered about Naomi's IMG_0883 even as our rented chaises IMG_0884 inspired Peter to give swimming lessons IMG_0885 and we relaxed IMG_0886 but no one more than Peter IMG_0887 until it was happy hour and the local drinks brought us all back to life IMG_0888 IMG_0889 IMG_0890 to life as we studied the bar IMG_0891 and admired the beauty of the beach IMG_0892 IMG_0893 IMG_0894 IMG_0895 often adorned by flying pelicans who would swoop down for their prey. Suzanne gathered this hermit crab IMG_0896 and we headed off. On the way home, we decided to stop at Brandywine Bay IMG_0897 and ask what year it was. After studying the map IMG_0898 admiring the flowers IMG_0899 checking out the view IMG_0900 and enjoying their balcony IMG_0901 we chatted with Cindy, one of the owners, IMG_0902 about returning the next day. After admiring the spiders int eh cactus IMG_0903 IMG_0904 IMG_0905 we took a picture of the vacant Williams cow stand IMG_0906 and headed to West End where Suzanne was talking to Ben on the cell phone IMG_0907 as the sun began to set IMG_0908 and we admired the brush IMG_0909 and dropped sea glass that still needed seasoning IMG_0910 before admiring the sunset IMG_0911 IMG_0912 IMG_0913 IMG_0914 IMG_0915 IMG_0916 and heading back to the hotel for another dinner at the Sugar Mill IMG_0917 before noting this sign IMG_0918 and hoping it did not represent the policy at the Tamarind as well.

Tuesday morning we awoke to a nice day IMG_0919 and met the Kramers IMG_0920 at breakfast as Suzanne IMG_0921 and I IMG_0922 had eggs IMG_0923 with toast IMG_0924 which I adorned with hot sauce IMG_0925 to accompany my tea IMG_0926 before we made our way up and down the local beach IMG_0927 IMG_0928 IMG_0929 IMG_0930 before heading up the stairs IMG_0931 past the interesting tree IMG_0932 tot he hotel pool IMG_0933 and our departure for Long Beach where we were greeted with this important message about Tanice IMG_0934 and a beautiful beach IMG_0935 IMG_0936 that the Kramers IMG_0937 and us IMG_0938 were prepared to enjoy in the sand IMG_0939 IMG_0940 pictures that were misaimed. While we were walking the beach, a launch appeared IMG_0941 from this ship IMG_0942 and took some people from the beach IMG_0943 back to the main ship as this couple prepared to snorkel IMG_0944 on the wrong part of the beach and the waves IMG_0945 bounced gently as this sign IMG_0946 gave guidance and I took these Monet-like pictures of the ocean floor IMG_0947 IMG_0948 IMG_0949 through the water. As we walked back, some snorkelers began to emerge IMG_0950 and give guidance about snorkeling trails IMG_0951 though we decided to head back through detours to Josiah's Bay Beach. At Josiah's, we ran into Naomi IMG_0952 who posed for a family picture IMG_0953 and delivered chairs for our relaxation IMG_0954 and later sold us drinks so that Seva IMG_0955 and Suzanne IMG_0956 could audition for the role of mirage lady as we prepared IMG_0957 melted cheese IMG_0958 and nuts IMG_0959 for our snack before Peter IMG_0960 emerged and slowly IMG_0961 came into view IMG_0962 to describe his journey IMG_0963 IMG_0964 on the snorkel boat (with the Hoosiers) to Suzanne IMG_0965 and Seva IMG_0966 before the clouds IMG_0967 and birds and surfers at sea IMG_0968 made us think IMG_0969 about packing IMG_0970 IMG_0971 and heading back IMG_0972 to the Tamarind where we wondered if we could have a drink and change clothes. Peter drank IMG_0973 and Suzanne changed clothes IMG_0974 as I captured Cindy the owner (and kindergarten teacher and former United flight attendant) with her husband and children IMG_0975 who either worked at the Tamarind or the Dolphin place but had all found happiness on Tortola. After a picture of me IMG_0976 and me with Seva IMG_0977 and a failed attempt to get the cows IMG_0978 we packed the car IMG_0979 and capture Suzanne IMG_0980 and the two of us IMG_0981 before heading off to Brandywine Bay for dinner. Once there, Peter took a picture of Suzanne, me and Seva IMG_0982 and we went in to meet Davide the owner IMG_0983 and to admire the table overcloth IMG_0984 as Spice our waiter appeared IMG_0985 and brought us a bottle of wine IMG_0986 IMG_0987 IMG_0988 that I seemed unable to capture. We toasted the meal IMG_0989 and studied the menu IMG_0990 before digging into the bread IMG_0991 and then starting with soup IMG_0992 homemade mozzerella IMG_0993 mussels IMG_0994 and a Greek salad IMG_0995 for a good beginning. While the others split this pasta IMG_0996 I had the portobello Napoleon IMG_0997 and then we had our main courses of lamb IMG_0998 tagliata IMG_0999 duck IMG_1000 and fettuccine IMG_1001 before finishing the meal with chocolate mousse IMG_1002 and tiramisu IMG_1003 which made us feel that we might keep next year's reservation. Before departing we had a picture with Davide and Cindy and Spice IMG_1004 IMG_1005 in the hotel's kitchen taken by this helper IMG_1006 who couldn't remain incognito once Spice posed with him IMG_1007 but we slept well that night after so good a meal.

Wednesday morning, as Suzanne slept IMG_1008 I considered the clothes IMG_1009 and we made our way IMG_1010 to breakfast IMG_1011 where there was no herbal tea, just Lipton IMG_1012 and the self portrait IMG_1013 and self portraits IMG_1014 IMG_1015 came out well as the beach scene IMG_1016 welcomed Seva and Peter IMG_1017 in Peter's new shirt IMG_1018 as Andrea IMG_1019 appeared to assure us that there would be salt fish and johnnycakes as Peter IMG_1020 audited his expenses before the salt fish IMG_1021 and johnnycakes IMG_1022 arrived though they did not evoke the expected reaction from Seva IMG_1023 though my johnnycake IMG_1024 was good enough to make up for the lack of granola or of a suitable substitute so I had French toast IMG_1025 with rum butter IMG_1026 once more. After some lounging IMG_1027 at the pool IMG_1028 and an attempt at a close up IMG_1029 and a picture in bad lighting IMG_1030 it was time to gather our possessions into our suitcases IMG_1031 IMG_1032 and carryons IMG_1033 IMG_1034 to take a few more pictures while waiting IMG_1035 IMG_1036 IMG_1037 and to head into Road Town to the Mill Mall IMG_1038 where the only attraction was the health food restaurant IMG_1039 and then across the way tot eh Joshua J Smith Building IMG_1040 and to Ganzee IMG_1041 none of which produced the appropriate tokens of the trip. So, we followed the rules IMG_1042 while getting gas IMG_1043 and then flew off. In the shuttle on the tarmack at San Juan airport it took a few tries IMG_1044 IMG_1045 before we got this picture of contented travelers IMG_1046 coming back from a vacation though I'm not sure that either picture of my meal IMG_1047 IMG_1048 or my meal with Suzanne's IMG_1049 could ever show the harshness of returning to the food you don't want to eat and the weather you don't want to endure after a nice winter's trip to a warm place with good beaches.
