../../Sabbat/2004/12.27-31.04EndOfYear/ The last days of 2004 It was nearing the end of another year and so it was time to take stock of the various things that hadn't been done in the year and of other things that would be fun as the year wound down. There was also the challenge of seeing how many pictures would be taken this year.

On Monday December 27, the kids and I drove Suzanne to the airport so that she could spend a few days in Pittsburgh visiting Norma. Then we went to lunch and devoured Ben's meal IMG_0477 even though the potato salad gave me indigestion for a few days. Maybe that is why Ben IMG_0478 IMG_0479 is laughing? Jane IMG_0480 cleared away her food IMG_0481 though the french (aka freedom) fries were a group effort. After Jane took these pictures of me IMG_0482 and Sarah IMG_0483 who sat on the other side, I took this artistic photo of the Marathon Restaurant IMG_0484 and we headed to the Mutter Museum IMG_0485 but there was no photography allowed there and maybe for good reason.

The next day, I turned to the new penny sculptures to see what could be done. With inadequate reading of the documentation, I was only able to fit 5 pennies in a cross section IMG_0486 and it didn't improve with the flash turned off IMG_0487 and up close the pennies blurred IMG_0488 but I could show part of the problem IMG_0489 IMG_0490 IMG_0491 IMG_0492 from various angles and then work down to a single cross section IMG_0493 where even with one post removed IMG_0494 I only fit 5 pennies as Sarah worked on the Rubik's cube IMG_0495 and I pondered further the penny situation IMG_0496 IMG_0497 as Sarah got guidance IMG_0498 and eventually moved her hands fast enough IMG_0499 so that Rubik was finally put together.

Meanwhile, on the left coast, Jacobo was demonstrating how to fit 7 pennies 115_1506 115_1509 where I had only fit 5 and growing it out with pens for posts 115_1510 115_1511 all of which made him particularly happy to pose with Bruce Arden 115_1512 and celebrate Bruce's forthcoming nuptials.

Back in the East, I picked Suzanne up at the airport and we met Lenny and Judy IMG_0500 for dinner but only took pictures after the food was consumed IMG_0501 IMG_0502 IMG_0503 which may have been an end of the year thing or maybe it's a new plan -- to capture used plates rather than fresh food. The waiter IMG_0504 was amused and with a few more tries, I was able to capture them IMG_0505 IMG_0506 IMG_0507 and then take this self portrait IMG_0508 and picture of Suzanne IMG_0509 as the desserts arrived IMG_0510 IMG_0511 IMG_0512 IMG_0513 which raised spirits IMG_0514 even as I captured this sign IMG_0515 and with flash IMG_0516 for my collection which was amusing since there were no paper towels, just grass IMG_0517 in the bathroom. The chef came by to thank us and posed IMG_0518 before we visited the leopard next door IMG_0519 and began the drive back north.

After digesting further instructions, I understood how to fit a cross section of 7 pennies in place and was able to reach almost 5 inches in height IMG_0520 IMG_0521 IMG_0522 IMG_0523 IMG_0524 IMG_0525 before needing a shoe lace for stability against warped rods. Next, I added a second shoe lace to bring it together further IMG_0526 IMG_0527 IMG_0528 at the 12.5 inch level and thanked my lab assistant IMG_0529 for her help in the enterprise. The experimenting continues and new photos will appear in the new year as we tackle the issue of the later more voluminous decades.

Then it was New Year's Eve Day and Jane and John IMG_0530 were working on their MUN position paper as Andrew IMG_0531 watched and we noted that they had gotten their licenses IMG_0532 IMG_0533 IMG_0534 the day before as Suzanne spoke IMG_0535 IMG_0536 and Sarah watched IMG_0537 IMG_0538 until Ed arrived IMG_0539 to make some progress on the puzzle and Ben IMG_0540 ate his sandwich as I finished my salad IMG_0541 and recorded the important new things -- grapple's (pronounce them correctly) IMG_0542 and the new Boynton calendar IMG_0543 to replace the old IMG_0544 as progress continued on the puzzle IMG_0545 and we dug into chips and dip IMG_0546 before taking holiday pictures of Sarah and Ed IMG_0547 IMG_0548 IMG_0549 IMG_0550 me (with hat in self portrait) IMG_0551 Suzanne IMG_0552 IMG_0553 Ben IMG_0554 and our slowly assembling family -- 3 strong IMG_0555 then 4 strong IMG_0556 IMG_0557 then all of us IMG_0558 IMG_0559 IMG_0560 as recorded by Ed IMG_0561 just as the Havurah people arrived and posed IMG_0562 in different ways IMG_0563 before heading to the comedy club IMG_0564 and on to dinner at Marsillio's IMG_0565 IMG_0566 where I knew the waiter (class of '07) IMG_0567 even as the holiday costumes came to Suzanne IMG_0568 Steven IMG_0569 IMG_0570 Peter IMG_0571 Sara IMG_0572 Seva IMG_0573 and my self portrait IMG_0574 and profile IMG_0575 IMG_0576 shots all of which made a nice setting IMG_0577 as the waitress IMG_0578 noted Suzanne IMG_0579 IMG_0580 IMG_0581 Peter IMG_0582 Steven IMG_0583 Sara IMG_0584 IMG_0585 and Seva IMG_0586 and our drinks IMG_0587 IMG_0588 chilled as I captured the glassware IMG_0589 and my last pictures of Suzanne IMG_0590 IMG_0591 IMG_0592 and Steven IMG_0593 IMG_0594 IMG_0595 in the new year. After posing the celebratory instruments IMG_0596 IMG_0597 all that was left to do was to toast 2004 and say hello to 2005.

Happy New Year to all. ../../Sabbat/2004/12.08-21.04People/ Various people in December

Mary DeLorenzo (Provost's Office) ../../Sabbat/2004/11.29-12.05.04California/ To California and back It was going to be a trip to California to see the family and the OC but first I had to meet with IMG_0293 Carol Greenhouse from Anthropology on Monday and have the shredder man IMG_0294 come on Wednesday to take our wares IMG_0295 to the grinding machine. On Thursday, I had a faculty lunch with IMG_0296 IMG_0297 Joyce Carol Oates (Creative Writing), Warren Warren (Chemsitry), Adele Goldberg (Linguistics), Liz Gavis (Molecular Biology), Stan Katz (Woodrow Wilson School) and Kai Li (Computer Science). Then, John Ikenberry IMG_0298 came by for a minute before this gentleman IMG_0299 moved his truck but wouldn't allow me to take his picture.

I picked up Jane and we drove to the airport parking here IMG_0300 and catching the bus here IMG_0301 so that we could sit next to this gentleman on the plane IMG_0302 and watch him read Jane's copy of The Catcher in the Rye while he shared his book IMG_0303 with Jane but unfortunately it was unreadable. My meal IMG_0304 was no better than Jane's IMG_0305 IMG_0306 except for the main course IMG_0307 of mine which made me hope the flight would land soon so that we could put our bags IMG_0308 and ourselves IMG_0309 on the bus to get to Avis IMG_0310 where this gentleman IMG_0311 watched as we rented this car IMG_0312 and took the freeway IMG_0313 to see Larry IMG_0314 and Janet IMG_0315 who was incognito.

Next morning, Janet IMG_0316 was happier as I played with the computer IMG_0317 and Jane IMG_0318 acknowledged that we were in The OC IMG_0319 as we headed off to see the silos IMG_0320 and talk to Mikey IMG_0321 and the other employee IMG_0322 as we observed the silos IMG_0323 IMG_0324 and the eventual end for their contents as the pellets go into the hopper IMG_0325 and up the chute IMG_0326 on their way to production. This gentleman appeared IMG_0327 as we were recording the gauges IMG_0328 and the metal machines IMG_0329 IMG_0330 that won't be around for long even as Mikey IMG_0331 feigned work and Larry IMG_0332 posed for the soccer picture while we all posed with the silos IMG_0333 to prepare us if we ever had to do a full scale protest.

Next we drove on down the highway IMG_0334 past the In-N-Out Burger IMG_0335 IMG_0336 and in the line of traffic IMG_0337 IMG_0338 past Santa Claus IMG_0339 and onward IMG_0340 IMG_0341 IMG_0342 IMG_0343 in our search for tourist information IMG_0344 through various turns IMG_0345 IMG_0346 and beyond the palm trees IMG_0347 IMG_0348 IMG_0349 IMG_0350 IMG_0351 until we found the Orange County van IMG_0352 IMG_0353 and passed through the light IMG_0354 to the first signs of Newport Beach IMG_0355 and onward IMG_0356 IMG_0357 IMG_0358 IMG_0359 IMG_0360 IMG_0361 IMG_0362 IMG_0363 IMG_0364 IMG_0365 until we saw the beach IMG_0366 IMG_0367 IMG_0368 and rounded the curve IMG_0369 to Laguna Beach IMG_0370 IMG_0371 where we parked IMG_0372 good enough for me but not good enough for the locals and pushed the button IMG_0373 to make our way IMG_0374 to the Village Mart IMG_0375 where the waiter IMG_0376 showed the way to the rest room where I got this collection sign IMG_0377 and then on to the beach IMG_0378 where we used this bench IMG_0379 to enjoy my sandwich IMG_0380 as the pelican IMG_0381 and pigeons IMG_0382 watched and wondered if the guards IMG_0383 would appear as I took this self portrait IMG_0384 and we again crossed the street behind an authentic OC hatted person IMG_0385 to make our way to the chocolate store IMG_0386 where there was a good selection IMG_0387 and lots of Sponge Bob's friends IMG_0388 as this gentleman IMG_0389 provided us with chocolate IMG_0390 you don't want to eat in the car. We said good bye to the Laguna Beach Greeter IMG_0391 IMG_0392 passed an OC sweat shirt IMG_0393 and found that there were people who felt my parking job IMG_0394 was inadequate.

We were back on the road and eventually got to San Diego for some food IMG_0395 though there seemed to be a lot of phone calling IMG_0396 IMG_0397 IMG_0398 in the air as I posed for a self portrait IMG_0399 and captured Jane IMG_0400 before she started talking on the phone IMG_0401 but this ended when we studied pictures IMG_0402 and Syl posed IMG_0403 as we looked at another picture IMG_0404 and then took the elevator IMG_0405 to Aesop's Tables where we captured the tables IMG_0406 IMG_0407 IMG_0408 the salad IMG_0409 crackers IMG_0410 Mediterranean plate IMG_0411 and chicken Caesar salad IMG_0412 before heading back to the decorations IMG_0413 with a little for Hannukah IMG_0414 and then playing cards IMG_0415 IMG_0416 until the phone rang IMG_0417 but Dan focused IMG_0418 and won as we ate more fruit IMG_0419 more chewies IMG_0420 and more brownies IMG_0421 washed down by tea IMG_0422 from these bags IMG_0423 before calling it a night.

Saturday morning, we drove tot he pancake house IMG_0424 where we had a short wait IMG_0425 IMG_0426 IMG_0427 IMG_0428 before we were seated with our tea IMG_0429 given menus IMG_0430 with the history IMG_0431 and then left to our coffee IMG_0432 hot chocolate IMG_0433 and pancake concoction IMG_0434 as the waitress took this family photo IMG_0435 and the omelette IMG_0436 and pancakes IMG_0437 arrived. We stopped at Home Depot but they had poinsettias IMG_0438 and Bonsai IMG_0439 but not what we were looking for. Then, we drove home and parked IMG_0440 and had our lunch of soup IMG_0441 IMG_0442 and cheese IMG_0443 IMG_0444 set out and served IMG_0445 as Jane IMG_0446 Syl IMG_0447 Dan IMG_0448 and I IMG_0449 admired the vegetable faces IMG_0450 IMG_0451 I made as tea IMG_0452 and oranges (brought all the way from China?) IMG_0453 were served.

Later, we drove to Trader Joe's IMG_0454 and after a few pictures IMG_0455 IMG_0456 the manager told us that we could take her picture IMG_0457 but no more pictures of the store. We drove on to Rancho Bernardo IMG_0458 and had a fine dinner with Anne, Irv, Rob and Linda IMG_0459 IMG_0460 IMG_0461 served by this waiter IMG_0462 who also took the picture of the assembled. ../../Sabbat/2004/11.24-28.04Thanksgiving/ Thanksgiving, 2004 It was Thanksgiving (or almost) and so as we had done in
2000
2001
2002
2003
we celebrated. Suzanne began her celebration with a foot washing IMG_0001 and drying IMG_0002 that seemed to ease her mood IMG_0003 as Lewis IMG_0004 decided that Jane IMG_0005 needed this medication IMG_0006 which seemed to make her happy IMG_0007 as Norma IMG_0008 watched and Suzanne's drying IMG_0009 and painting IMG_0010 continued even as the pizzas IMG_0011 IMG_0012 IMG_0013 arrived and we opened the Brown's chocolates IMG_0014 to start the days of eating.

Juliana appeared for a repeat of the pumpkin picture IMG_0015 and then posed IMG_0016 as we wondered if Cider House Rules IMG_0017 would get watched by Jane IMG_0018 and John IMG_0019 even as Juliana IMG_0020 told Sarah and Suzanne about her life and the butter IMG_0021 and sugar IMG_0022 got ready for the condensed milk IMG_0023 as Suzanne IMG_0024 stirred and then went back to her pedicure IMG_0025 which seemed to make her happy IMG_0026 even as Ben and I played PayDay IMG_0027 while the cake IMG_0028 got ready and Kim made this slice of pizza IMG_0029 and added pepperoni IMG_0030 as Ben did electronics IMG_0031 and I missed IMG_0032 and then captured myself IMG_0033 for a profile shot even as the cake completed IMG_0034 and we called it a day.

Thursday morning was the main event and the onions cooked IMG_0035 as the bread waited IMG_0036 and Suzanne relaxed IMG_0037 as Ben IMG_0038 had a pre-game game IMG_0039 while the Huang boys IMG_0040 arrived to be greeted by Jane IMG_0041 even as Justin IMG_0042 showed off his injuries and the McKeons (and Unlce Mikey) IMG_0043 arrived ahead of Nathaniel IMG_0044 while Ross tied Caleb's shoes IMG_0045 and we were ready to head off to the game. Along the way, we ran into Eddie IMG_0046 and his family IMG_0047 as the pride of PHS 2002 posed IMG_0048 and the games began.

These photos come to you courtesy of Justin Huang who was allowed to photograph but not to participate (doctor's orders). IMG_0049 IMG_0050 IMG_0051 IMG_0052 IMG_0053 IMG_0054 IMG_0055 IMG_0056 IMG_0057 IMG_0058 IMG_0059 IMG_0060 IMG_0061 IMG_0062 IMG_0063 IMG_0064 IMG_0065 IMG_0066 IMG_0067 IMG_0068 IMG_0069 IMG_0070 IMG_0071 IMG_0072 IMG_0073 IMG_0074 IMG_0075 IMG_0076 IMG_0077 IMG_0078 IMG_0079 IMG_0080 IMG_0081 IMG_0082 IMG_0083 IMG_0084 IMG_0085 IMG_0086 IMG_0087 IMG_0088 IMG_0089 IMG_0090 IMG_0091 IMG_0092 IMG_0093 IMG_0094 IMG_0095 IMG_0096 IMG_0097 IMG_0098 IMG_0099 IMG_0100 IMG_0101 IMG_0102 IMG_0103 IMG_0104 IMG_0105 IMG_0106 IMG_0107 IMG_0108 IMG_0109 IMG_0110 IMG_0111 IMG_0112 IMG_0113 IMG_0114 IMG_0115 IMG_0116 IMG_0117 IMG_0118 IMG_0119 IMG_0120 IMG_0121 IMG_0122 IMG_0123 IMG_0124

After the game, we returned home where Suzanne and Kim IMG_0125 were at work, Jane IMG_0126 was serving the postgame food and Ben IMG_0127 was doing the PS/2 thing even as food emerged IMG_0128 IMG_0129 and was served to Jon IMG_0130 Justin IMG_0131 and Jane IMG_0132 even as Amv came back with Sarah IMG_0133 IMG_0134 as the Mediterranean dish IMG_0135 and the first poppers IMG_0136 were served and Amv IMG_0137 got ready for the bloody Mary's IMG_0138 as the assembled IMG_0139 brought their shoes IMG_0140 and Ben and Norma IMG_0141 played gin. Scott (another of the books) arrived IMG_0142 as did the Gespass'es IMG_0143 as Andy IMG_0144 did the commercial thing and more food IMG_0145 IMG_0146 was served even as Sarah and friends IMG_0147 IMG_0148 IMG_0149 IMG_0150 did the Thanksgiving warmth thing and Debbie IMG_0151 andy IMG_0152 and Sam IMG_0153 wondered what Ben IMG_0154 Jane (of bulging eyes) IMG_0155 and I (of self portrait) IMG_0156 were thinking though Jane's eyes seemed to lose their bulge IMG_0157 as the wine IMG_0158 was brought out and the television (makeover) IMG_0159 made Sarah and friends IMG_0160 fall into a trance IMG_0161 that could only be ended by the appearance of food IMG_0162 and more food IMG_0163 and soup IMG_0164 which made Ben's plate IMG_0165 amuse Jane IMG_0166 as her plate IMG_0167 evolved IMG_0168 into final form IMG_0169 and she joined Ben IMG_0170 at the table IMG_0171 as my plate took form IMG_0172 and the crowd returned for seconds IMG_0173 IMG_0174 IMG_0175 and came back to enjoy at the table IMG_0176 IMG_0177 IMG_0178 IMG_0179 IMG_0180 IMG_0181 our side IMG_0182 and their's IMG_0183 as a few of the desserts IMG_0184 IMG_0185 were served along with the basket Katy made IMG_0186 as the college kids IMG_0187 were amused and Lewis took a few pics IMG_0188 as Sam IMG_0189 IMG_0190 posed int he doorway and more dessert was served IMG_0191 IMG_0192 as we recorded the San Pellegrino bottle IMG_0193 and made various attempts to get a good piece of a piece of chocolate IMG_0194 IMG_0195 IMG_0196 IMG_0197 with the various settings of the camera.

Friday, Jane rushed hair blown IMG_0198 to sing as Sam, Debbie and Katy IMG_0199 admired the tree IMG_0200 and the crowd IMG_0201 IMG_0202 included Celia Chazelle IMG_0203 who resisted the paparazzi even as Michael and Caroline's sister IMG_0204 and her parents IMG_0205 enjoyed the show.

Afterwards we made our way to Nassau Hall where Kim found the light switches IMG_0206 and then Sam IMG_0207 and Kim IMG_0208 flanked by her legions and then alone IMG_0209 IMG_0210 did the presidential thing.

Back at home there was more food IMG_0211 and more eaters IMG_0212 IMG_0213 even as the brie IMG_0214 filled stomachs IMG_0215 and Ben IMG_0216 ate IMG_0217 and then posed IMG_0218 with his new found chicken bone IMG_0219 as the assembled IMG_0220 IMG_0221 IMG_0222 IMG_0223 got closer IMG_0224 more remote IMG_0225 and closer again IMG_0226 IMG_0227 as the wine flowed IMG_0228 and a few IMG_0229 wanted soda IMG_0230 as Dan Yi IMG_0231 and Maggie IMG_0232 appeared though Dan IMG_0233 forgot to clean up his mess again. The assembled IMG_0234 realized it was time to go to Glenside where this gentleman IMG_0235 helped fill our carts IMG_0236 to the amusement of Andy IMG_0237 and the crowd that greeted us when we returned home wondering where Lewis might be. IMG_0238

Saturday morning, Andy and Sam IMG_0239 IMG_0240 did their photo followed by Lewis IMG_0241 Debbie IMG_0242 Sarah IMG_0243 Jane IMG_0244 Suzanne IMG_0245 Ben IMG_0246 and me IMG_0247 even as the phone IMG_0248 elicited anonymity IMG_0249 from Ben IMG_0250 and we wondered IMG_0251 whether to light the candle IMG_0252 which up close IMG_0253 would emit an odor that might upset my cereal IMG_0254 and milk IMG_0255 as Jane IMG_0256 prepared to head to her luncheon (to which we were not invited) and 3 generations of Gespass women posed IMG_0257 before a group of us went on a walk only to meet the others along the canal IMG_0258 before returning home for a visit from the Hunts.

We greeted them at the door IMG_0259 along with their niece IMG_0260 as the children played IMG_0261 IMG_0262 and the parents IMG_0263 IMG_0264 watched and as more playing IMG_0265 led the bigger kids to PS/2 IMG_0266 as Andy IMG_0267 tried to capture the scene but others settled into the couch IMG_0268 IMG_0269 to visit. Later, Suzanne IMG_0270 and Jane IMG_0271 got us ready for our movie excursion.

Sunday morning, people assembled int he kitchen IMG_0272 IMG_0273 as the butter melted IMG_0274 under Suzanne's watchful eye IMG_0275 and Ben hid IMG_0276 then appeared IMG_0277 IMG_0278 as Katy IMG_0279 and Jane IMG_0280 IMG_0281 ate bagels IMG_0282 and Jane IMG_0283 and Ben IMG_0284 helped the others IMG_0285 think about a departure as Ben IMG_0286 the girls IMG_0287 and Suzanne IMG_0288 said good bye to Lewis IMG_0289 and to the others IMG_0290 who came back for a few farewell shots IMG_0291 IMG_0292 and so ended a very happy Thanksgiving celebration. ../../Sabbat/2004/11.23-24.04People/ Those who came to visit IMG_1524 IMG_1525 IMG_1526 IMG_1527 IMG_1528 IMG_1529 ../../Sabbat/2004/11.09-20.04PeopleAndNYC/ A week on the campus, A day in the city On Tuesday, November 9, I had a faculty lunch IMG_1440 IMG_1441 with Left to Right: Anne Case (Economics and Woodrow Wilson School), Amy Borovoy (East Asian Studies), Catherine Peters (Civil and Environmental Engineering), Alexander Nehamas (Philosophy and Comparative Literature), Robert Vanderbei (Operations Research and Financial Engineering) and Guy Nordenson (Architecture). Later that week, I went out for scotch with Stuart Schwartz IMG_1442 and then on Tuesday November 16, it was lunch again with IMG_1443 IMG_1444 Left to Right: Gabriela Nouzeilles (Spanish and Portugeese), Samuel Wang (Molecular Biology), Martin Semmelhack (Chemistry), Olga Hasty (Slavic Languages and Literatures), Claire Gmachl (Electrical Engineering) and Sheldon Garon (History) as a prelude to lunch on Thursday November 18 with the old gang from lunches at Bellcore 10 years ago IMG_1445 IMG_1446 IMG_1447 Ken Steiglitz (Computer Science), Mike Honig (visiting Electrical Engineering) and Steve North *86.

All of this left me prepared for my trip to NYC on Friday November 19 for a meeting at the Sloan Foundation. After the meeting, I met Suzanne and we walked until time was running out and then caught a subway to the FCiA where this collection sign IMG_1448 prepared us for our meeting with Michael D. Murphy IMG_1449 who told us about his website http://www.michaeldmurphy.com/ , served us well and encouraged us to enjoy the meal. The table was set IMG_1450 to enjoy the bread IMG_1451 and my soup IMG_1452 as Suzanne had a nice appetizer IMG_1453 before her lamb IMG_1454 and my veggie dinner in darkness IMG_1455 and in light IMG_1456 appeared to be followed by salads IMG_1457 and the scene of glasses on the table IMG_1458 because Michael gave us a choice of wines. Suzanne's tiramisu IMG_1459 IMG_1460 and my creme brulee IMG_1461 IMG_1462 complemented the dinner as I took a picture of our neighbors IMG_1463 and Michael took this picture of us IMG_1464 before we began the trek back to our hotel.

Along the way, we passed shoe stores IMG_1465 and fresh fruit IMG_1466 and these cosmetics IMG_1467 IMG_1468 before coming across more shoes IMG_1469 and dresses IMG_1470 with inspirational thought IMG_1471 as we discovered more show stores in the village IMG_1472 IMG_1473 IMG_1474 IMG_1475 IMG_1476 IMG_1477 before finding this hand IMG_1478 that might be used to hit this punching bag IMG_1479 even as we discovered that the movie theater IMG_1480 was sold out so that we couldn't see Sideways.

Marching on past shoes IMG_1481 and Anthropolgie IMG_1482 and more shoes IMG_1483 we finally gave to the windows at Lord and Taylor IMG_1484 IMG_1485 with explanation of Boston life IMG_1486 in view IMG_1487 and life on the Mississippi IMG_1488 and these scenes IMG_1489 IMG_1490 of the Rockies IMG_1491 and these IMG_1492 IMG_1493 of Nebraska IMG_1494 and finally these IMG_1495 IMG_1496 from the Big Apple itself IMG_1497 before one last window IMG_1498 bade our farewell to Lord and Taylor IMG_1499 and we marched into Rockefeller Center IMG_1500 where these people IMG_1501 were taking a picture before the skaters IMG_1502 IMG_1503 and carriages IMG_1504 and this star IMG_1505 with its story IMG_1506 that would eventually go on top of the tree. We went past the NYFD store IMG_1507 and caught a picture of Radio City Music Hall IMG_1508 IMG_1509 before going back to the hotel for the night.

Next morning, we woke up with tired feet and went to a slowly served breakfast where Suzanne IMG_1510 and I IMG_1511 had plenty of time to look at her coffee IMG_1512 and take artistic shots IMG_1513 with the water IMG_1514 and milk IMG_1515 before my syrup IMG_1516 and her eggs IMG_1517 and my pancakes IMG_1518 came.

After breakfast, we made the requisite stop at Krispy Kreme IMG_1519 to sample their wares IMG_1520 before getting on the train and taking these signs IMG_1521 IMG_1522 IMG_1523 that gave the rules. ../../Sabbat/2004/11.02-05.04TeacherShoppingDays/ The teachers shop, we walk It was to be a short week but I did manage to get pictures of Willard Peterson IMG_1336 and Thanos Panagiotopoulos IMG_1337 before the end of the week. On Friday, the teachers all were off shopping, so Jane put on her hat IMG_1338 and ate this sandwich IMG_1339 while Ben IMG_1340 and Lucy IMG_1341 got ready for the journey and I took this self portrait IMG_1342 in front of a sun washed screen IMG_1343 with key board IMG_1344 before the sun moved so the screen could be seen IMG_1345 as we checked the time IMG_1346 and saw people emerging IMG_1347 a few minutes before wheels up time.

On the way, we came to a flag man IMG_1348 IMG_1349 IMG_1350 before getting to the NAL IMG_1351 where we signed on to the walk IMG_1352 as someone left their coffee cup IMG_1353 to inspire us as Ben IMG_1354 led the way through the Bucks County property IMG_1355 and the women IMG_1356 got us ready for the course map IMG_1357 IMG_1358 as we marched IMG_1359 to the 13th hole IMG_1360 until Ben took a break IMG_1361 as the woods were ahead IMG_1362 IMG_1363 and the stragglers IMG_1364 were behind as we saw this beautiful tree IMG_1365 and these limbs in the water IMG_1366 as we marched along IMG_1367 IMG_1368 IMG_1369 to the locked lock IMG_1370 and the tired tree IMG_1371 as they walked behind IMG_1372 and Ben found a caterpillar IMG_1373 who became his friend IMG_1374 as we saw the dog with the missing leg IMG_1375 and marched further IMG_1376 to the path to the main road IMG_1377 where Ben's caterpillar got a friend IMG_1378 and Jane and Lucy posed IMG_1379 as we came to the crazy house where they displayed a television and wheel chair IMG_1380 as we read the history of the covered bridge IMG_1381 as we walked around thistle IMG_1382 and Ben took this picture IMG_1383 and then this one that also included my head IMG_1384 as Lucy and Jane IMG_1385 IMG_1386 hugged and were happy to not be this dead rat IMG_1387 by the side of the road as we came to the bridge IMG_1388 and saw the rules IMG_1389 that we felt we could follow even as we approached town IMG_1390 and the bridge master IMG_1391 who showed us his lunch and pointed the way to town where we found a store IMG_1392 or two IMG_1393 and this horse IMG_1394 where this gentleman IMG_1395 was nice enough to take our picture even as we were confronted with political sentiments IMG_1396 though we found our way to lunch IMG_1397 as we grasped the menu IMG_1398 and Lucy IMG_1399 Suzanne IMG_1400 Ben IMG_1401 IMG_1402 and I IMG_1403 studied it IMG_1404 as Jane IMG_1405 looked at the drinks IMG_1406 and the waitress IMG_1407 showed the policement to the counter IMG_1408 even as our crackers IMG_1409 come for Suzanne's soup IMG_1410 and then after a pit stop to get this collection sign IMG_1411 the salad IMG_1412 IMG_1413 and burgers IMG_1414 IMG_1415 and my quesadilla IMG_1416 and Ben's club sandwich IMG_1417 came so that I could look inside my meal IMG_1418 and then the clean plates IMG_1419 IMG_1420 IMG_1421 attested to the food quality even as Suzanne IMG_1422 took her last bite. After roaming through the town IMG_1423 IMG_1424 we captured this wisdom IMG_1425 IMG_1426 saw the town gas station IMG_1427 and went into Lila IMG_1428 where the servers IMG_1429 brought this cookie IMG_1430 to Ben as Lucy and Jane IMG_1431 showed off their shoes and we made our way past the town festival sign IMG_1432 ( all the way ) across the bridge IMG_1433 over the water IMG_1434 to IMG_1435 and through IMG_1436 the covered bridge to the other lock IMG_1437 and on our way home.

We stopped in Lambertville to see this sign IMG_1438 IMG_1439 that expressed our sentiments. ../../Sabbat/2004/10.18-29.04PeopleHalloweenMartha/ Life, Halloween and lunch with Martha A number of things happened in the days leading up to Hallowe'en which were recorded. Marilyn Marks IMG_1199 came to chat and then Jane and I found these shoes IMG_1200 IMG_1201 hanging over power lines after which Leah Targone IMG_1202 took these pictures of the office staff IMG_1203 IMG_1204 all of which led to the celebration of Marsha Gilman's years at Princeton IMG_1205 IMG_1206 IMG_1207 IMG_1208 IMG_1209 IMG_1210 IMG_1211 IMG_1212 and a meeting with Craig Richmond IMG_1213 before the Hallowe'en spirit landed on Nassau Street IMG_1214 IMG_1215 and we had an office lunch to celebrate Sunny IMG_1216 IMG_1217 after which Chris Vitale and David Wirth from OIT IMG_1218 brought these important devices and I had a faculty lunch with IMG_1219 IMG_1220 Left to Right: Edgar Choueiri (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering), Susan Stewart (English), Jonathan Eggenschwiler (Molecular Biology), Gillian Knapp (Astrophysics), Christopher Achen (Politics), David Wood (Chemical Engineering), Cecilia Rouse (Economics and Woodrow Wilson School).

Now we were ready for Hallowe'en. So, Ben's costume was made IMG_1221 and tried on IMG_1222 IMG_1223 so that we could say hello to Seva IMG_1224 on our way to the bus stop where we saw Emily K IMG_1225 and her dad IMG_1226 as the walkers went by IMG_1227 and Leong and his daughter arrived IMG_1228 to join Emily K IMG_1229 and Emily and John Shea IMG_1230 while the bus appeared. IMG_1231

We were then off to the parade at JP. Brian Blount IMG_1232 and Leong Seouw IMG_1233 were there which amused Suzanne IMG_1234 as did IMG_1235 the little tiger so that the parade could begin. IMG_1236 Dr. Ginsburg appeared IMG_1237 IMG_1238 as did Carol Alter IMG_1239 and the first marchers IMG_1240 IMG_1241 who kept passing by IMG_1242 IMG_1243 IMG_1244 until we caught sight of some fifth graders IMG_1245 IMG_1246 IMG_1247 IMG_1248 IMG_1249 IMG_1250 IMG_1251 IMG_1252 IMG_1253 and we finally saw Ben IMG_1254 as others marched by IMG_1255 IMG_1256 IMG_1257 including Sponge Bob IMG_1258 as Ben and his friends IMG_1259 IMG_1260 IMG_1261 IMG_1262 IMG_1263 watched. The parade continued IMG_1264 IMG_1265 IMG_1266 IMG_1267 IMG_1268 IMG_1269 IMG_1270 IMG_1271 IMG_1272 IMG_1273 IMG_1274 until the Queen of Hearts IMG_1275 passed along with more paraders IMG_1276 IMG_1277 IMG_1278 IMG_1279 IMG_1280 until the presidential candidates IMG_1281 appeared along with the Hershey's lady IMG_1282 and more paraders IMG_1283 IMG_1284 IMG_1285 IMG_1286 IMG_1287 IMG_1288 IMG_1289 until Ben and his friends marched by IMG_1290 IMG_1291 IMG_1292 and after a little more parade IMG_1293 IMG_1294 IMG_1295 IMG_1296 IMG_1297 IMG_1298 IMG_1299 we saw the Sponge Bob people IMG_1300 and some others IMG_1301 IMG_1302 and then zeroed in on Joel IMG_1303 and Ben IMG_1304 and his team IMG_1305 IMG_1306 IMG_1307 to the amusement of Laura Ash IMG_1308 as Suzanne posed with Dr. G IMG_1309 as Wayne Meisel IMG_1310 took this picture of us IMG_1311 so that we could head off to lunch with Martha.

The maitre d' IMG_1312 took our orders IMG_1313 and we sat down to soup and tea IMG_1314 as Suzanne IMG_1315 Sarah IMG_1316 and Martha IMG_1317 checked out the drink IMG_1318 and Martha IMG_1319 looked at my profile IMG_1320 as the sandwiches IMG_1321 IMG_1322 and salad IMG_1323 arrived and then some dessert IMG_1324 IMG_1325 dippables and a piece of pie IMG_1326 got eaten IMG_1327 as Suzanne IMG_1328 and Sarah IMG_1329 IMG_1330 posed with a final good picture of Sarah IMG_1331 as the men at the adjoining table IMG_1332 discussed the forthcoming election. We then got into my car IMG_1333 and drove on to the Dollar Planet IMG_1334 and Blockbuster IMG_1335 before we were ready to say a final Trick or Treat. ../../Sabbat/2004/10.15-17.04RaceForTheCure/ The Race for the Cure In the buildup to the Race for the Cure, I met with Chang-rae Lee IMG_1051 and then came home to the early table setting IMG_1052 and materials IMG_1053 and the apples IMG_1054 that were meant to amuse the owl IMG_1055 and the chicken IMG_1056 as Ben and Jane IMG_1057 got together their sign IMG_1058 as a tribute to Suzanne IMG_1059 and the next coming of Team Suzanne which I held IMG_1060 IMG_1061 IMG_1062 and then Ben did IMG_1063 IMG_1064 and so as we did in 2003 we were ready for the Race for the Cure. We even had tomatoes IMG_1065 and cheeses IMG_1066 and chips IMG_1067 as Ben IMG_1068 read and Sara IMG_1069 and Sarah IMG_1070 and Eileen IMG_1071 and OtherJane IMG_1072 arrived to be part of the core Team Suzanne team.

Once at the race sight, we were directed to parking IMG_1073 and Ben IMG_1074 displayed his hat and me my shirt IMG_1075 as Ben IMG_1076 led us IMG_1077 to the T shirt exchange IMG_1078 IMG_1079 where we saw Mike and Shristie IMG_1080 who posed with Suzanne IMG_1081 and Sara IMG_1082 and the rest of the gang IMG_1083 after which we ran into Adam, Nate and Will IMG_1084 and this woman IMG_1085 who foolishly asked what we expected to get from the line where we were standing. In the next line, Suzanne got her survivors shirt IMG_1086 and these pictures of me and Suzanne IMG_1087 IMG_1088 and then the 4 of us IMG_1089 IMG_1090 were taken by Sara IMG_1091 who took a few more IMG_1092 IMG_1093 just to be sure. In the next line IMG_1094 we saw Glen Northey IMG_1095 and then ran into Nancy Lewis and her team IMG_1096 as we all tried on bandanas IMG_1097 IMG_1098 IMG_1099 to the amusement of OtherJane IMG_1100 who seems to believe that a house should have less rather than more -- a concept that is very foreign to the rest of us.

After my self portrait IMG_1101 we explained the rules of the lines to this woman IMG_1102 while Sarah IMG_1103 IMG_1104 did her commercials and the Szabo's IMG_1105 IMG_1106 arrived. On the way into this tent IMG_1107 we put signs of support on our backs IMG_1108 IMG_1109 as Leslie appeared IMG_1110 and took our pictures. The Ash women IMG_1111 IMG_1112 were there for the next signs on back IMG_1113 IMG_1114 IMG_1115 as we went into the tent IMG_1116 for more samples. The Hot Dog Johnny's team was there IMG_1117 as we ran into the Princeton women IMG_1118 IMG_1119 and Josephine's family IMG_1120 IMG_1121 and the Rider crew IMG_1122 who would be part of our team along with Hannah and Cara IMG_1123 and the Sheas IMG_1124 IMG_1125 so we knew it was time to gather the team IMG_1126 IMG_1127 IMG_1128 IMG_1129 IMG_1130 IMG_1131 for many team pictures as the traffic director IMG_1132 tried to organize us for the Klockenbrinks IMG_1133 IMG_1134 IMG_1135 and Jans IMG_1136 who arrived in time to see the sign march onward IMG_1137 but not before Sheryl Feinstein IMG_1138 arrived. After the photographer IMG_1139 IMG_1140 took his group picture, I captured Meredith and Ken IMG_1141 Cara and Hannah IMG_1142 IMG_1143 and the sign held high (but next year it needs to be two-sided) IMG_1144 and then the Sheas IMG_1145 admired the sign IMG_1146 as Jane and friends IMG_1147 and Judith and Carol IMG_1148 got us going in the walk even as Lenny and Judy IMG_1149 arrived. We marched IMG_1150 IMG_1151 to the finish line and then headed home to the world's longest hoagies IMG_1152 IMG_1153 as the poker crowd IMG_1154 admired the other food IMG_1155 IMG_1156 and beer IMG_1157 and the kitchen crew IMG_1158 prepared as the boys IMG_1159 IMG_1160 IMG_1161 thought about a game of chess IMG_1162 and the mothers and sisters IMG_1163 arrived as Jane and her team IMG_1164 wondered if we could get a good picture of Steven Just IMG_1165 IMG_1166 IMG_1167 IMG_1168 while the brownies IMG_1169 apples IMG_1170 donuts IMG_1171 and candy IMG_1172 were served to the amusement of Tony Klockenbrink IMG_1173 and his daughters IMG_1174 IMG_1175 as Hank Farber IMG_1176 took this picture of me and the conversations continued IMG_1177 IMG_1178 IMG_1179 IMG_1180 IMG_1181 IMG_1182 IMG_1183 in various corners and the Mason IMG_1184 Dimaggio IMG_1185 IMG_1186 Masons IMG_1187 were there along with Kathy Klockenbrink IMG_1188 and Wei-King IMG_1189 but then Hank and Sue IMG_1190 and Hui-Ling IMG_1191 and the Szabos IMG_1192 and Jans IMG_1193 left leaving a smaller crowd IMG_1194 IMG_1195 to continue conversations which amused Jena IMG_1196 as the Browns IMG_1197 and Pete and Lisa IMG_1198 were the last of the Rider group to show their support to a wonderful cause.

Once again, a great day for Team Suzanne. ../../Sabbat/2004/10.11-14.04PeopleAndAmyInnauguration/ Innagurating Amy On Monday, October 11 I met with Will Howarth IMG_1018 and then we celebrated Peter Kramer's birthday IMG_1019 IMG_1020 On Wednesday October 14, my picture was taken with Hector Garcia-Molina IMG_1021 IMG_1022 by a University electrician IMG_1023 who shall remain nameless. The next day, I met with Bob Pierson of Human Resources IMG_1024 and Boris Altschuler IMG_1025 before having lunch with Raj Vinnakota IMG_1026 and catching the guys at Campus Security IMG_1027 Kenneth Samuel (Sgt.), Duncan Harrison (Lt.) and Charlie Peters (Investigator) as I left for Philadelphia. We parked on this level IMG_1028 and left the car IMG_1029 for the event where we ran into IMG_1030 Kyle Vanderlick (Chemical Engineering) and Eduardo Glandt (Dean of Engineering at Penn) IMG_1031 and Judith Scioli Bob Barnett (Vice Provost) and JoAnn Mitchell (President and Chief of Staff at Penn) IMG_1032 Jim Wei IMG_1033 and Lori Meade and Mary Baum (Development Office) IMG_1034 and this fellow whose name I forget IMG_1035 and the Russels IMG_1036 and Howard Ende IMG_1037 before I posed in this picture with the guest of honor in a picture taken by the Penn photographer IMG_1038 after which I saw Neil Rudenstine with the Weis IMG_1039 and Carole Thompson IMG_1040 and Steven Gill IMG_1041 and Lorraine Sciarra IMG_1042 and Karen Trainer and BilL Stowe IMG_1043 and Kathy Rohrer and John Sully IMG_1044 climbing the stairs where I ran into Dubby Wynne IMG_1045 and sat with these former colleagues and students of Amy IMG_1046 and this member of the search committee at Penn and his wife IMG_1047

On the way out, we said good night to Betty Leydon IMG_1048 here joined by John IMG_1049 and Mary Baum IMG_1050 who had all come for the event.

Good luck Amy! ../../Sabbat/2004/10.04-09.04FacultyAndChairsReception/ A reception for the chairs IMG_0968 IMG_0969 IMG_0970 IMG_0971 IMG_0972 IMG_0973 IMG_0974 IMG_0975 IMG_0976 IMG_0977 IMG_0978 IMG_0979 IMG_0980 IMG_0981 IMG_0982 IMG_0983 IMG_0984 IMG_0985 IMG_0986 IMG_0987 IMG_0988 IMG_0989 IMG_0990 IMG_0991 IMG_0992 IMG_0993 IMG_0994 IMG_0995 IMG_0996 IMG_0997 IMG_0998 IMG_0999 IMG_1000 IMG_1001 IMG_1002 IMG_1003 IMG_1004 IMG_1005 IMG_1006 IMG_1007 IMG_1008 IMG_1009 IMG_1010 IMG_1011 IMG_1012 IMG_1013 IMG_1014 IMG_1015 IMG_1016 IMG_1017 ../../Sabbat/2004/09.28-10.01.04CampusAndOutsiderArt/ People and a cruise to see Howard Finster I met with Warren Warren IMG_0913 on Tuesday September 28 and two days later set the table IMG_0914 for the first lunch of the year IMG_0915 IMG_0916 with Left to Right: Jorge Sarmiento (Geosciences), Graham Barnett (History), William Bialek (Physics), Pietro Frassica (French and Italian), Esther da Costa Meyer (Art and Archaeology), Ron Weiss (Electrical Engineering).

Then on Friday October 1, I took the day off to go see Finster with DrLen. I left Suzanne and Sara Just IMG_0917 at home and found this parking space IMG_0918 on this street IMG_0919 in front of the Hallowe'en house IMG_0920 by this corner IMG_0921 and parked. As I started down the street, Dr Len drove by IMG_0922 and we headed off with only a small (and much needed) pit stop at this pit IMG_0923 before getting to this building IMG_0924 and this one IMG_0925 at Lehigh where we could look down the hill IMG_0926 at the rest of the campus or go inside and see work by Finster IMG_0927 which is what we did. Some of his works are shown here IMG_0928 IMG_0929 IMG_0930 IMG_0931 IMG_0932 IMG_0933 IMG_0934 IMG_0935 IMG_0936 IMG_0937 IMG_0938 IMG_0939 IMG_0940 IMG_0941 IMG_0942 though I was apparently not supposed to take these photos. Then I had my lunch IMG_0943 and the Dr had his IMG_0944 and we said good bye to one last photo IMG_0945 and made our way to the main campus IMG_0946 where we were greeted by this sculpture IMG_0947 and watched the tour group IMG_0948 before going to the part of the exhibit where photos were not allowed.

After the exhibit, we drove through the town past houses like this IMG_0949 to the bridge IMG_0950 where we could overlook the mill IMG_0951 and Dr Len IMG_0952 could watch the goings on of an old mill town IMG_0953 while I took this self portrait IMG_0954 and these scenic city views IMG_0955 IMG_0956 plus these views of the goodly Dr overlooking the railroad IMG_0957 IMG_0958 before we said good bye to the mill IMG_0959 and headed to the local town hangout IMG_0960 which we entered IMG_0961 through this door IMG_0962 and got this picture for the collection IMG_0963 before heading off back to Lambertville. Along the way, we stopped for this ice cream IMG_0964 for me IMG_0965 and Dr Len enjoyed his IMG_0966 as we both enjoyed the outsider art piece IMG_0967 saluting the ice cream cone. ../../Sabbat/2004/09.14-22.04CampusShredderCampus/ People and Shredders On September 14, I went to lunch at Frist and ran into Stu Orefice IMG_0890 who runs the show. I was late for my chair's meeting with Kyle Vanderlick IMG_0891 of Chemical Engineering but met later that day with Dave Bradford IMG_0892 from economics and the Wilson School. On my way home, I stopped to pick up Ben at his Barclay Class IMG_0893 IMG_0894 IMG_0895 IMG_0896 IMG_0897 which was very charming though I felt like the world was somehow upside down if I was the one wearing a tie and jacket when I spoke to the man in shorts and there was Ben in a pinstripe suit dancing with a girl with white gloves. My! how the world has changed.

On September 15, this gentleman came IMG_0898 from the shredding company IMG_0899 and loaded the bucket IMG_0900 and raised it into the truck IMG_0901 but we could watch the screen and meters IMG_0902 and get a close up IMG_0903 as the shredding continued IMG_0904 much to the amusement of Lin, Sandra and Melinda IMG_0905 who watched as the meter IMG_0906 finally said that shredding was done.

A week later, I needed wisdom so I took a picture of the owl IMG_0907 before heading to the first faculty lunch of the year IMG_0908 IMG_0909 with Brent Shaw (Classics), David August (Computer Science), Maria Pino Martin (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering), Susan Fiske (Psychology), Dmitri Tymoczko (Music), Robert Calderbank (Program in Applied and Computational Math, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics), and Angela Creager (History). Later that day, Kathy Rohrer brought Toni Morrison IMG_0910 down for a visit and took this picture of the 2 of us IMG_0911

The next day, Septmber 23, Christian Wildberg (Classics) IMG_0912 came to visit. ../../Sabbat/2004/09.08-13.04FirstDaysOfSchool/ First day(s) of School It was the days leading up to the first day of school. On my way to a meeting on September 8, I ran into Ed IMG_0856 coming out of Frist with his Amazon package.

Two days later, we had a repeat of previous first days

2003
2002
2001
and then proceeded to record this one.

Ben IMG_0857 posed by the tree and then Ben and Jane IMG_0858 IMG_0859 IMG_0860 IMG_0861 posed before we went to Kaylen's grandparents house and Jane and Kaylen posed IMG_0862 IMG_0863 as Adele emerged IMG_0864 to join them IMG_0865 for a final picture before I drove home past the school bus IMG_0866 and recorded the time IMG_0867 to be sure that I'd be at the bus stop in time.

Suzanne IMG_0868 IMG_0869 was getting ready to leave as I took a bad IMG_0870 and then good self portrait IMG_0871 as Ben IMG_0872 pretended it was still summer. En route, we ran into the Flemmer's IMG_0873 and met the Klockenbriks IMG_0874 and Susan Head IMG_0875 at the bus stop as Greg approached with children IMG_0876 and John Shea IMG_0877 and Emily Shea IMG_0878 were there as the Ash's arrived IMG_0879 and Ben posed alone IMG_0880 and then with the group IMG_0881 even as our bus stop alum, Paul Dimaggio IMG_0882 IMG_0883 made a return visit. Ben IMG_0884 IMG_0885 posed 2 more times and then the bus IMG_0886 came and was boarded. IMG_0887

On the next Monday, September 13, I had lunch with Cornel West and Eddie Glaude IMG_0888 IMG_0889 of the Religion Department. ../../Sabbat/2004/09.02-06.04GregErinWedding/ Erin and Gregory's Wedding It was the end of the summer and we could feel Labor Day approaching. We were also excited because Greg and Erin were getting married. The day before we left for the wedding I met with C P Chou IMG_0134 of the East Asian Studies Department and Kevin Lehman IMG_0135 of the chemistry department.

On Friday morning, we were ready to leave a few minutes before wheels up time IMG_0136 when from the door IMG_0137 emerged Jane IMG_0138 and we were off. We were early to pick up Sarah and so went to the WaWa where we saw Bill Flemmer IMG_0139 and then returned to where Suzanne and Ben IMG_0140 were watching Sarah IMG_0141 emerge ready to go. We were excited that E Z Pass worked IMG_0142 and made our way to the parking lot IMG_0143 where we left the car IMG_0144 and headed to the terminal IMG_0145 where Ben IMG_0146 and Jane IMG_0147 dug into a sandwich as Sarah IMG_0148 and Suzanne IMG_0149 had coffee and I took this self portrait IMG_0150 before taking Jane back IMG_0151 for another sandwich. And wise they were to eat because this meal IMG_0152 IMG_0153 was hardly satisfying as we flew through and those across the aisle IMG_0154 and on my side IMG_0155 were happy when we were wheels down IMG_0156 and could make our way through the terminal IMG_0157 trying to get pictures of Republicans IMG_0158 IMG_0159 returning from the convention as our bags IMG_0160 accumulated and we headed off on the rental car bus IMG_0161 IMG_0162 IMG_0163 to the Hertz counter IMG_0164 where our agent IMG_0165 was training a new agent IMG_0166 and the supervisor IMG_0167 insisted that we had to photograph him as well. Once we got into the car IMG_0168 we were ready to explore our part of Dallas including the gas prices IMG_0169 and road signs IMG_0170 before we got to the hotel and saw Dick and Larry IMG_0171 in the parking lot as Dick did his hostage imitation IMG_0172 and Larry IMG_0173 got ready for a busy weekend bringing the bowls up to the room. We started to get our bags IMG_0174 and met Fran IMG_0175 as this man IMG_0176 checked us into the room and remembered us for later. We rode the elevator up IMG_0177 and saw our room IMG_0178 and bed IMG_0179 with a good view IMG_0180 and the entry of the hotel IMG_0181 and downtown Dallas IMG_0182 in the distance. Ben IMG_0183 relaxed as Dansyl IMG_0184 IMG_0185 came to visit and Jane IMG_0186 and Sarah IMG_0187 (in better pose) IMG_0188 visited before we found the elevator IMG_0189 and headed up to see Larry and Janet IMG_0190 where the bowls were IMG_0191 and Larry showed us tot he hospitality suite where there was water IMG_0192 wine IMG_0193 soda IMG_0194 and more wine IMG_0195 and munchies IMG_0196 but we decided to beg off and head for dinner.

Dinner was at the Trevi IMG_0197 the hotel's restaurant hosted by Dansyl IMG_0198 as the babies arrived IMG_0199 IMG_0200 IMG_0201 IMG_0202 IMG_0203 IMG_0204 and posed with Sarah and Suzanne and occasionally Jane as their mother IMG_0205 and father IMG_0206 and grandmother IMG_0207 looked on. I needed a new battery and so rode the elevator IMG_0208 to get it and then snapped the hostess IMG_0209 on my return. We settled in for dinner IMG_0210 IMG_0211 as Jack IMG_0212 and Emma IMG_0213 and Matt IMG_0214 Jane IMG_0215 and Ben IMG_0216 all wondered if my martini IMG_0217 would have 3 olives if I took the picture IMG_0218 in the right lighting. Suzanne IMG_0219 was amused when Paige and Gregory IMG_0220 arrived and Larry IMG_0221 IMG_0222 IMG_0223 was dressed much more formally than Dick IMG_0224 IMG_0225 but they headed to dinner IMG_0226 and so Jack IMG_0227 and Emma IMG_0228 wished Paige IMG_0229 and Gregory IMG_0230 well as did Dansyl IMG_0231 and Ben IMG_0232 and Sarah IMG_0233 while the babies ate IMG_0234 and Larry took one last suit shot IMG_0235 as my extra olives IMG_0236 arrived along with good bread IMG_0237 and a salad IMG_0238 that went well with the other opening dishes IMG_0239 IMG_0240 IMG_0241 that made people at our table IMG_0242 IMG_0243 IMG_0244 IMG_0245 IMG_0246 IMG_0247 IMG_0248 happy to be eating and wonder if I could take profile IMG_0249 and portrait IMG_0250 shots of myself. Then, the main courses arrived IMG_0251 IMG_0252 IMG_0253 IMG_0254 IMG_0255 along with more bread IMG_0256 as Suzanne practiced carrying babies IMG_0257 IMG_0258 IMG_0259 IMG_0260 and Ben's head IMG_0261 hit the table. Some more baby holding IMG_0262 IMG_0263 and some coffee IMG_0264 brought Benjamin IMG_0265 back to life as Michelle IMG_0266 and Jason IMG_0267 arrived to Ben's IMG_0268 amusement and Sarah IMG_0269 got involved in baby holding as the desserts IMG_0270 IMG_0271 IMG_0272 arrived as Fran IMG_0273 advised that the anniversary celebration IMG_0274 IMG_0275 IMG_0276 was about to begin -- 18 wonderful years. We admired the cake IMG_0277 IMG_0278 and sang and then were amused IMG_0279 IMG_0280 IMG_0281 as our desserts IMG_0282 IMG_0283 arrived. After a few more pictures IMG_0284 IMG_0285 IMG_0286 IMG_0287 IMG_0288 IMG_0289 IMG_0290 IMG_0291 IMG_0292 IMG_0293 it was time to call it a night and get off to sleep.

Saturday morning, I went for a walk and on my way back I saw Jean, Lois, Alon, Karen and Serge IMG_0294 at a distance and then they got closer IMG_0295 as I convinced them to have breakfast at the hotel where Dick, Fran, Michelle and Jason IMG_0296 were also eating and willing to pose for couples pictures IMG_0297 IMG_0298 IMG_0299 IMG_0300 as well as taking this picture of me IMG_0301 before Dansyl IMG_0302 IMG_0303 arrived and I decided to go upstairs to see who was asleep IMG_0304 and who was awake IMG_0305 as we IMG_0306 eventually headed down for breakfast where Alvaro IMG_0307 was our waiter and the others IMG_0308 watched as my coffee IMG_0309 and the juices IMG_0310 IMG_0311 along with Janet's cousin IMG_0312 convinced me to have this fruit plate IMG_0313 and the grits IMG_0314 to sustain me for the day. Back upstairs, the group gathered IMG_0315 and I tried a mirror picture IMG_0316 before they IMG_0317 IMG_0318 IMG_0319 IMG_0320 went off to the bridesmaids' luncheon and we IMG_0321 IMG_0322 IMG_0323 IMG_0324 IMG_0325 left our room IMG_0326 IMG_0327 and went upstairs to be with the men IMG_0328 IMG_0329 IMG_0330 IMG_0331 including the fathers IMG_0332 as we all IMG_0333 watched football until Ben, Dan and I decided to park the car IMG_0334 downtown and go to the Kennedy Museum IMG_0335 where we could sit at the window where Lee Harvey Oswald changed the course of history. When we came back, we ran into the Beast IMG_0336 in the elevator and then took Ben for a swim IMG_0337 IMG_0338 IMG_0339 as the ducks gathered IMG_0340 and Jane finished her apple IMG_0341 as there was more swimming IMG_0342 IMG_0343 and a self portrait IMG_0344 followed by more swimming IMG_0345 IMG_0346 IMG_0347 and an attempt to get pictures of this man's tattoos IMG_0348 IMG_0349 for Jane. I said good bye to Ben IMG_0350 in the pool and made my way past the real rehearsal people IMG_0351 IMG_0352 IMG_0353 IMG_0354 including Paige IMG_0355 who was rushing to get there and Matt IMG_0356 who was an observer to the elevator IMG_0357 which was getting a special treatment which was cause for much speculation about what went wrong that required such a cleaning effort.

It was now time to gather to go tot he rehearsal dinner which was a barbeque at a ranch outside of town. Sarah IMG_0358 posed as Ben IMG_0359 flew out of the frame and Suzanne and Jane IMG_0360 came down the hall as Suzanne posed IMG_0361 for the elevator ride. In the lobby, we ran into Mikey IMG_0362 IMG_0363 and his troups IMG_0364 and Hon and Sean IMG_0365 and then Shelby IMG_0366 posed after which there was a mother and daughter IMG_0367 and a few sister in law IMG_0368 IMG_0369 pictures before we passed Gregory's car IMG_0370 and headed out into space IMG_0371 to get to the ranch IMG_0372 where the guide IMG_0373 posed and we took group pictures IMG_0374 IMG_0375 IMG_0376 and one of this person IMG_0377 before going in to meet Cathy IMG_0378 and the musician IMG_0379 and see Gregory greet his grandmother IMG_0380 as the bar tender IMG_0381 finally came into the frame IMG_0382 and I met Erin's grandparents IMG_0383 as the kids captured photos of the postcards IMG_0384 IMG_0385 IMG_0386 IMG_0387 on our table as Rob IMG_0388 and Dan IMG_0389 and Linda Pinkel IMG_0390 arrived and Erin posed with friends IMG_0391 whose names I've forgotten including this gentleman IMG_0392 as Larry and Rob IMG_0393 chatted and Sarah IMG_0394 walked away from Gregory and Linda IMG_0395 who posed as did the other Gregory with his cousins IMG_0396 as Larry IMG_0397 welcomed the assembled and Jason IMG_0398 toasted the campaign team IMG_0399 IMG_0400 and the 3 brothers IMG_0401 IMG_0402 IMG_0403 even as Beast IMG_0404 and Toba IMG_0405 and Andy IMG_0406 and cousin Karen IMG_0407 gathered to hear Larry IMG_0408 speak about his love for Gregory and Erin as my food IMG_0409 was finished so I tried to get a good picture of Dansyl IMG_0410 IMG_0411 or Emma IMG_0412 IMG_0413 as the kids at our table IMG_0414 IMG_0415 IMG_0416 IMG_0417 IMG_0418 IMG_0419 IMG_0420 looked in various directions as Dansyl IMG_0421 watched as Greg and Erin began IMG_0422 and became more involved IMG_0423 as the warm feelings flowed IMG_0424 IMG_0425 IMG_0426 IMG_0427 until they IMG_0428 and Michelle and Jason IMG_0429 and other Dan (for Dansyl) IMG_0430 watched as the kids played IMG_0431 IMG_0432 and I went to meet this gentleman (Princeton '56) and his hard core Republican wife IMG_0433 IMG_0434 and then did the Deanly pose IMG_0435 IMG_0436 before we were called up IMG_0437 to sign and here is what we sang even as Beast IMG_0438 shot pictures, Suzanne IMG_0439 held a baby and I got a picture of the Bush boots IMG_0440 and shirt IMG_0441 and a very large earful of story about compassionate conservatism which to my way of thinking is a justification of an unrealistic selfishness but others may differ. As this server IMG_0442 from the neighborhood served dessert and told me about his horse, Suzanne IMG_0443 held a baby and the kids IMG_0444 IMG_0445 amused another IMG_0446 IMG_0447 Eric IMG_0448 was really happy to have his new shirt (a win-win situation) and this couple was happy to be away from Omaha IMG_0449 and medical school as this woman IMG_0450 was happy to be here from Michigan and these folks from Hiram IMG_0451 IMG_0452 near the twin cities of Farrel and Sharon. The little ones IMG_0453 IMG_0454 did a song and all IMG_0455 IMG_0456 IMG_0457 IMG_0458 cheered them on until they IMG_0459 IMG_0460 IMG_0461 IMG_0462 IMG_0463 IMG_0464 IMG_0465 IMG_0466 wound things down so that the bridal party IMG_0467 IMG_0468 could do its dances and as the babies watched IMG_0469 IMG_0470 the grandparents IMG_0471 IMG_0472 IMG_0473 danced. After just a few more pictures IMG_0474 IMG_0475 IMG_0476 of babies, this lad IMG_0477 removed my wrist bracelet and I took some outdoor pictures IMG_0478 IMG_0479 IMG_0480 before driving back to the hotel where the doorman IMG_0481 was very happy to see us.

Sunday began with outdoor breakfast IMG_0482 IMG_0483 IMG_0484 IMG_0485 IMG_0486 IMG_0487 IMG_0488 at which the waiter IMG_0489 was incognito and the food IMG_0490 IMG_0491 IMG_0492 looked very good before we greeted the others IMG_0493 IMG_0494 IMG_0495 IMG_0496 IMG_0497 IMG_0498 IMG_0499 who were eating inside and did some bunny tricks IMG_0500 IMG_0501 IMG_0502 IMG_0503 IMG_0504 with our napkins before deciding IMG_0505 to abandon the heat and join the inside group IMG_0506 IMG_0507 IMG_0508 IMG_0509 IMG_0510 IMG_0511 even as more assembled IMG_0512 IMG_0513 IMG_0514 IMG_0515 for breakfast and we met Gregory's former room mate IMG_0516 who is going to heal horses as we headed upstairs and relaxed IMG_0517 IMG_0518 IMG_0519 IMG_0520 IMG_0521 IMG_0522 before heading down to admire Janet's quilt IMG_0523 IMG_0524 with the troups IMG_0525 IMG_0526 IMG_0527 before Ben IMG_0528 led us to a couch IMG_0529 where this group picture was taken.

Next we drove downtown and gave this gentleman IMG_0530 $4 to park in his lot as the other car IMG_0531 arrived and we admired the geometric building IMG_0532 as we made our way across the street IMG_0533 IMG_0534 to the Nasher Sculpture Center IMG_0535 and once there IMG_0536 took a few pictures in the entryway IMG_0537 IMG_0538 before getting tickets IMG_0539 and posing with some sculptures IMG_0540 and enjoying others IMG_0541 IMG_0542 including the typewriter eraser IMG_0543 IMG_0544 and the Roy Lichtenstein IMG_0545 and the clothespin (original in Philadelphia) IMG_0546 and this one IMG_0547 IMG_0548 IMG_0549 with the hidden person and this one IMG_0550 IMG_0551 that was covered by random digits as well as a few more IMG_0552 IMG_0553 IMG_0554 before heading outside to see an interesting collection IMG_0555 including one like the PU art museum one IMG_0556 and the states IMG_0557 and to group with the standing people who had arms IMG_0558 IMG_0559 IMG_0560 IMG_0561 IMG_0562 as opposed to the Princeton people who don't and the workman IMG_0563 IMG_0564 IMG_0565 who moved his arm and this colorful sculpture IMG_0566 after which we ran into the others IMG_0567 and observed the sun IMG_0568 to Suzanne's delight IMG_0569 from the inner chamber before proceeding to a few more sculptures IMG_0570 IMG_0571 and taking many pictures amidst the food line IMG_0572 IMG_0573 IMG_0574 with a break for the skyline IMG_0575 before taking more IMG_0576 IMG_0577 IMG_0578 IMG_0579 IMG_0580 IMG_0581 IMG_0582 While we were waiting for the crowd to clear the gift shop, Sarah did some experimental photography of the rain outside IMG_0583 IMG_0584 the walls IMG_0585 the construction IMG_0586 IMG_0587 IMG_0588 IMG_0589 IMG_0590 the people in the gift shop IMG_0591 and her flipflops and feet IMG_0592 IMG_0593 IMG_0594 IMG_0595 before Jason IMG_0596 IMG_0597 and Michelle IMG_0598 discussed wrist bands IMG_0599 and Grandma IMG_0600 suggested it was time to head back where the seats IMG_0601 were ready and those gathered IMG_0602 IMG_0603 IMG_0604 were enjoying lunch while the rest of us headed to Mercado Juarez Cafe IMG_0605 for group pictures IMG_0606 IMG_0607 and lunch as we all IMG_0608 IMG_0609 IMG_0610 over ordered IMG_0611 IMG_0612 IMG_0613 IMG_0614 IMG_0615 IMG_0616 IMG_0617 very good food and ate a little too much hoping that our clothes would still fit.

After a short break, each of us IMG_0618 IMG_0619 IMG_0620 IMG_0621 IMG_0622 finished getting dressed and I tried mirror pictures IMG_0623 IMG_0624 which never work and a head on shot IMG_0625 from a bad angle before getting pictures of the family members IMG_0626 IMG_0627 IMG_0628 IMG_0629 getting ready for the wedding. Once downstairs, we greeted the Meyer-Roux's IMG_0630 and Janet and Dansyl IMG_0631 and then Janet and Syl IMG_0632 IMG_0633 IMG_0634 as Dan IMG_0635 showed off his tux and Michelle and Fran IMG_0636 appeared while we had to walk past the grimy ash tray IMG_0637 en route to the couples IMG_0638 IMG_0639 listening to the string quartet IMG_0640 as Lois IMG_0641 found her seat and we looked at the crowd IMG_0642 as Alon IMG_0643 was undoubtedly taking a picture of the chupah IMG_0644 to Fran's amusement IMG_0645 as Ben IMG_0646 posed for Jason IMG_0647 and Serge used old technology IMG_0648 IMG_0649 to take pictures that must have been like this picture of the Pinkels IMG_0650 or these self portraits IMG_0651 IMG_0652 and this profile IMG_0653 as Dansyl IMG_0654 and then Larry and Janet IMG_0655 were all seated IMG_0656 as Matt IMG_0657 settled in and the groomsmen IMG_0658 IMG_0659 IMG_0660 IMG_0661 IMG_0662 in various configurations waited for the bridesmaids IMG_0663 IMG_0664 IMG_0665 IMG_0666 IMG_0667 to settle and for the ring bearers IMG_0668 IMG_0669 IMG_0670 to come forth in the wagon and get ready IMG_0671 IMG_0672 to sit through the ceremony. As the ceremony progressed IMG_0673 IMG_0674 IMG_0675 IMG_0676 IMG_0677 the ring bearers IMG_0678 IMG_0679 IMG_0680 observed as they were pronounced IMG_0681 and then shown IMG_0682 as husband and wife. This led to the usual round IMG_0683 IMG_0684 IMG_0685 IMG_0686 IMG_0687 IMG_0688 of family photos as the crowds cleared IMG_0689 for more photos IMG_0690 IMG_0691 and Ben and Jane IMG_0692 IMG_0693 and then the 5 of us IMG_0694 IMG_0695 and then the 7 of us IMG_0696 IMG_0697 before the Dick and Fran family tree IMG_0698 IMG_0699 posed for this camera IMG_0700 before separating into these generations IMG_0701 IMG_0702 and this one IMG_0703 IMG_0704 IMG_0705 IMG_0706 not to mention Jean and Lois IMG_0707 and a few shoe pictures IMG_0708 IMG_0709 followed by many pictures of the babies in their wagon IMG_0710 IMG_0711 IMG_0712 IMG_0713 IMG_0714 as we dissembled IMG_0715 IMG_0716 and headed away to the bar IMG_0717 only to have to return for family pictures IMG_0718 IMG_0719 IMG_0720 IMG_0721 and then Paige IMG_0722 and Greg and Erin IMG_0723 IMG_0724 before the photographers IMG_0725 IMG_0726 took this picture (and maybe a few more) IMG_0727 and sent us back to eat.

At our table, were Mikey and Hon IMG_0728 Beast and Barb IMG_0729 and their kids IMG_0730 IMG_0731 not to mention cousin John IMG_0732 IMG_0733 who was at the next table. The cameras were rolling IMG_0734 for the first dance IMG_0735 as Ben IMG_0736 had his fruit IMG_0737 IMG_0738 and I had my salad IMG_0739 with pretty butter pats IMG_0740 and sorbet IMG_0741 as we took pictures of Mikey's family IMG_0742 IMG_0743 until the chicken nuggets came IMG_0744 and the kids posed with their Heinz bottles IMG_0745 int he hope that this would get John Kerry elected. Suzanne had this IMG_0746 and I had this IMG_0747 with her red wine IMG_0748 and my white IMG_0749 to amuse us as the cookies came IMG_0750 and Ben IMG_0751 went to visit Sylvia IMG_0752 and he and Rob IMG_0753 tried to amuse Sylvia IMG_0754 as the couple IMG_0755 took to the dance floor bringing out the photographers IMG_0756 who recorded this IMG_0757 as Ben and Sean IMG_0758 were amused as Dan IMG_0759 learned that Donna's daughter had given birth and various family members IMG_0760 IMG_0761 IMG_0762 IMG_0763 thought about dancing IMG_0764 IMG_0765 and then recorded that we did IMG_0766 IMG_0767 IMG_0768 IMG_0769 as they went off with the camera and took a lot of pictures IMG_0770 IMG_0771 IMG_0772 IMG_0773 IMG_0774 IMG_0775 IMG_0776 IMG_0777 IMG_0778 IMG_0779 IMG_0780 IMG_0781 IMG_0782 IMG_0783 IMG_0784 IMG_0785 before I got this picture of Dick and Larry IMG_0786 and Alon and Mikey IMG_0787 as the cakes appeared IMG_0788 IMG_0789 and Dansyl watched IMG_0790 as they were cut IMG_0791 and the crowds watched IMG_0792 IMG_0793 IMG_0794 as bride and groom IMG_0795 fed each and I tried to get too close IMG_0796 and then was able to see Ben's mouth IMG_0797 before the birthday girls appeared IMG_0798 and the bride and groom IMG_0799 IMG_0800 played the ``how well do you know each other'' game as things blurred IMG_0801 before I got a picture IMG_0802 of the blended family and one of brother and sister IMG_0803 and Jane IMG_0804 and Suzanne holding a baby IMG_0805 IMG_0806 IMG_0807 IMG_0808 as the chairs were lifted for bride and groom IMG_0809 IMG_0810 IMG_0811 IMG_0812 IMG_0813 and for the groom's parents IMG_0814 IMG_0815 IMG_0816 and for the bride's parents IMG_0817 IMG_0818 IMG_0819 IMG_0820 before Mikey and Jane danced IMG_0821 and we said good night to the babies IMG_0822 and decided to call it a day.

Monday morning, we ran into Aunt Jody IMG_0823 and then Beast posed with Sylvia IMG_0824 and Ben posed with his apple IMG_0825 before Jason showed off the shirt IMG_0826 IMG_0827 he got and the number he wore IMG_0828 in the morning's 15K. Larry and Jody IMG_0829 said good bye and we headed along the way IMG_0830 through the W-I-D-E lane IMG_0831 and recorded our mileage IMG_0832 behind this inspirational message IMG_0833 as we gave in our ticket IMG_0834 and bought gas IMG_0835 at this station IMG_0836 before this gentleman IMG_0837 took our car so that we could see one last cowboy sculpture IMG_0838 IMG_0839 IMG_0840 IMG_0841 and have Dick and Fran IMG_0842 and our family IMG_0843 and Jason and Michelle (hidden) IMG_0844 on the bus for this self portrait IMG_0845 as we gathered IMG_0846 and Ben IMG_0847 led the way through security where this gentleman IMG_0848 insisted on checking me carefully after which we went to get some food to see that Dick and Fran and Michelle and Jason were there IMG_0849 and Fran IMG_0850 was about to read The Fountainhead as Suzanne and Ben got the pretzel dog IMG_0851 and I got the pizza IMG_0852 to bring on the plane which arrived very early IMG_0853 enabling us to take the monorail IMG_0854 and get through the station IMG_0855 and to our car before we were supposed to land.

Good luck Erin and Greg! Have a wonderful life together! ../../Sabbat/2004/08.29.04CoryDavidsonWedding/ The wedding of Tara and Cory Amazing as it seems, Cory Davidson is getting married! Because of the travel involved, we got up early and I had Jane IMG_0001 take this picture of me IMG_0002 and then one of my tie IMG_0003 and another of me IMG_0004 as I watched Ben IMG_0005 as he watched television IMG_0006 and the new cell phone IMG_0007 that Suzanne IMG_0008 intended to bring on the train IMG_0009 as we passed into Newark IMG_0010 and missed the photo op for all the police on the train platform IMG_0011 as the train IMG_0012 got close to our first destination and I made progress on the crossword puzzle IMG_0013 even as we emerged and the protesters IMG_0014 were then as Suzanne went to get coffee IMG_0015 in the store that sold pizza IMG_0016 in addition to donuts. I took a long shot IMG_0017 and then chatted with the information men IMG_0018 as Suzanne positioned herself in the waiting room so that I could get pictures of the 2 girls behind her with great braids and amazing tattoos. IMG_0019 IMG_0020 Maybe in my next life, I will be able to just ask if I can take pictures of the tattoo'ed arm.

Then Suzanne IMG_0021 and I IMG_0022 were back on the train through Long Island IMG_0023 IMG_0024 until we came to Babylon IMG_0025 and after the first 2 stops IMG_0026 IMG_0027 got off at Green River IMG_0028 where we waited in the little shed IMG_0029 by the track IMG_0030 for a long time IMG_0031 hoping that our cab would really arrive.

Once it did, we got to the wedding and Suzanne and Judy posed IMG_0032 before Dr Len IMG_0033 and Cory appeared IMG_0034 as we made our way past the tables IMG_0035 to the waiting area where Suzanne IMG_0036 and Joyce IMG_0037 chatted as Jim IMG_0038 and Sharon Heitt IMG_0039 and then both together IMG_0040 appeared even as Joyce IMG_0041 was joined by her daughter IMG_0042 and they posed together IMG_0043 while I showed off self portraiture IMG_0044 and then posed for pictures with Dr Len IMG_0045 IMG_0046 as Doug Frankel IMG_0047 Jerry IMG_0048 and Ronnie IMG_0049 appeared and Dr Len posed with this friend IMG_0050 as the groomsmen showed me the fans IMG_0051 to Jerry's amusement IMG_0052 and the ceremony proceeded IMG_0053 IMG_0054 until we could congratulate the proud parents IMG_0055 and then join the crowds in the food line IMG_0056 so that I could have this plateful of food IMG_0057 and this napkin IMG_0058 and admire the center piece IMG_0059 as Suzanne's food IMG_0060 amused Joyce and her daughters IMG_0061 IMG_0062 while I made my way to the bar IMG_0063 and joined the crowds IMG_0064 waited for pina coladas IMG_0065 as mine was worth waiting for IMG_0066 once I drank it. This inspired me to take a picture of Larry IMG_0067 and Karen IMG_0068 Mitch and his wife IMG_0069 and Larry and Jerry IMG_0070 before we sat down with Tracy and Jackson IMG_0071 for dinner. It took a number of tries to get a good picture of Karen and Larry IMG_0072 IMG_0073 but finally I did IMG_0074 IMG_0075 as the others at the table IMG_0076 got ready to watch the wedding party assemble IMG_0077 as the tour guide IMG_0078 led them onto the floor IMG_0079 even as Larry took this picture of my tie IMG_0080 and the grandparents entered IMG_0081 followed by the bride's parents IMG_0082 IMG_0083 and the groom's IMG_0084 and the matched sets of groomsmen and bridesmaids IMG_0085 IMG_0086 IMG_0087 IMG_0088 IMG_0089 IMG_0090 IMG_0091 IMG_0092 until the bride and groom came forth IMG_0093 and the bride IMG_0094 showed her smile even as I admired the table decorations IMG_0095 and Doug Frankel IMG_0096 cheered them on as the chairs were lifted IMG_0097 IMG_0098 IMG_0099 and the chalah was blessed IMG_0100 so that we could begin our meal IMG_0101 and I could make my way to the buffet to provide the prop for this food picture IMG_0102 as the Heitt's ate away IMG_0103 and my food looked good IMG_0104 as the groom's mom IMG_0105 toured our table and we blessed the chalah IMG_0106 as the groom's dad IMG_0107 toured our table and we all IMG_0108 IMG_0109 IMG_0110 kept at our food IMG_0111 and bread IMG_0112 even as Tracy and Jackson IMG_0113 seemed to get serious about more food IMG_0114 Suzanne put umbrellas in her hair IMG_0115 and the Aaron posed with his folks IMG_0116 as Mitch decided to do the costume thing IMG_0117 IMG_0118 IMG_0119 IMG_0120 in a variety of fashions. The cake appeared IMG_0121 and this groomsman (whose name I forgot) IMG_0122 took these pictures of us IMG_0123 IMG_0124 as the groom's cake IMG_0125 as we prepared to eat the wedding cake IMG_0126 and then said good byes IMG_0127 so that we could head back to the station IMG_0128 where the sign IMG_0129 told us that we were in the place with the forbidding waiting room IMG_0130 as Suzanne IMG_0131 looked partied out as we made our way through Babylon IMG_0132 back home where our car IMG_0133 was waiting to take us home at the end of a wonderful day.

Good luck -- Tara and Cory! ../../Sabbat/2004/08.27-28.04HaircutsSarahsFarewell/ Haircuts, departures, end of summer On Friday, August 27, we all realized that summer was coming to an end, so we decided to have separate (and not particularly equal) spa days. When we finished, Sara Just decided that she had to take group pictures IMG_1454 IMG_1455 IMG_1456 as well as a picture for the toes collection IMG_1457 and a picture of Ben being held IMG_1458 as at the beach.

It being Sarah's last night at home, we realized that we needed to go out for a farewell dinner but the wait was long as we sat IMG_1459 and admired LiveStrong bracelets IMG_1460 IMG_1461 and sat some more IMG_1462 and took pictures of the back of Sarah's hair IMG_1463 and sat some more IMG_1464 as Benjamin counted 1 IMG_1465 2 IMG_1466 3 IMG_1467 and 4 IMG_1468 while we admired the facade IMG_1469 of the restaurant as we took a picture out of focus IMG_1470 and then Sarah IMG_1471 and I IMG_1472 and Suzanne's feet IMG_1473 and Ben IMG_1474 posed before we got into sister pictures IMG_1475 IMG_1476 a motion picture IMG_1477 some pictures of the bracelet IMG_1478 with not enough light IMG_1479 IMG_1480 and attempts at panorama shots IMG_1481 IMG_1482 IMG_1483 IMG_1484 IMG_1485 which never work since I haven't read the manual.

In time, we were seated and Suzanne IMG_1486 Jane IMG_1487 and Sarah IMG_1488 were happy to meet the waiter IMG_1489 as Ben IMG_1490 decided which margarita IMG_1491 I should order and the chips IMG_1492 and drink signs IMG_1493 IMG_1494 IMG_1495 put us back in panorama mode IMG_1496 IMG_1497 IMG_1498 IMG_1499 IMG_1500 IMG_1501 as our food came IMG_1502 IMG_1503 IMG_1504 IMG_1505 IMG_1506 which made me IMG_1507 quite happy as I cleaned my plate IMG_1508 and we wished Sarah a good year at school.

Next morning, we packed the car IMG_1509 and headed to Sarah's room IMG_1510 where Suzanne surveyed the situation IMG_1511 wondering what additional furniture was possible even as the clothes lay on the bed IMG_1512 and the refrigirator IMG_1513 came. After a mother and daughter picture IMG_1514 and a few mother along pictures IMG_1515 IMG_1516 we said hello to Wolfgang Danspeckgruber IMG_1517 and headed home where Jane and Fred IMG_1518 seemed happy enough to have my attempts at self portraits IMG_1519 IMG_1520 fail even as Suzanne IMG_1521 made her phone call. ../../Sabbat/2004/08.24-27.04FirstWeekBack/ First Week Back On Tuesday, August 24 I met with IMG_1449 Denis Feeney, new chair of Classics.

So, just as we'd done in
2003
and 2002
we headed off to All Saints Church on Friday night to see Ben IMG_0981 IMG_0982 IMG_0983 and others IMG_0984 and then him IMG_0985 IMG_0986 sometimes blocked IMG_0987 IMG_0988 IMG_0989 before they did the grand finale IMG_0990 for Friday night.

On Saturday morning, Fred (aka torch these days) IMG_0991 IMG_0992 IMG_0993 showed up for her birthday photos after which Jane IMG_0994 IMG_0995 IMG_0996 got ready and she and Suzanne IMG_0997 settled themselves as we saw Ben IMG_0998 and then up close IMG_0999 IMG_1000 and facing otherwise IMG_1001 as he got ready for the concert IMG_1002 which seems to have amused the Ash's IMG_1003 and Jane IMG_1004 as I experimented between profile IMG_1005 self portrait IMG_1006 profile IMG_1007 self portrait IMG_1008 and angular shots IMG_1009 before this gentleman IMG_1010 asked if he could sit next to us.

The concert IMG_1011 IMG_1012 IMG_1013 IMG_1014 IMG_1015 IMG_1016 really moved Suzanne IMG_1017 IMG_1018 IMG_1019 even as Paul Caldwell IMG_1020 appeared freshly shorn.

Afterwards there were a few sibling pictures IMG_1021 IMG_1022 IMG_1023 and then Ben IMG_1024 got ready to pose with Nate IMG_1025 IMG_1026 IMG_1027 and then the Ash family elders IMG_1028 posed Nate IMG_1029 and Nate and Ben IMG_1030 before taking these pictures of our entire delegation IMG_1031 IMG_1032 IMG_1033 for posterity. After a few good bye shots of Ben IMG_1034 IMG_1035 Jane and I went to Olive's and took pictures of the owner IMG_1036 even as he told us the story of his children.

We were a minute early for wheels up IMG_1037 and drove to Connecticut to pay these high prices IMG_1038 to get a lot of gas IMG_1039 and use the facility where we captured this collection sign IMG_1040 even as the waste basket IMG_1041 belied the cleanliness. Next stop, was Cambridge, where I did a local parking job on the curb IMG_1042 as everyone tried to escape IMG_1043 before they noticed the dent in the front fender IMG_1044 as we made our way to the hotel and Sarah came IMG_1045 to learn Ben's song IMG_1046 which Ben and Jane IMG_1047 continued to sing in the elevator even as we headed out to dinner at the Border Cafe IMG_1048 where a short wait IMG_1049 got us this table IMG_1050 and Ben IMG_1051 was amused as Suzanne IMG_1052 read the menu and I took a self portrait IMG_1053 before Suzanne dug into her margarita IMG_1054 as mine arrived IMG_1055 along with enchiladas IMG_1056 a burger IMG_1057 a salad IMG_1058 my main course IMG_1059 and Jane's chicken skewers IMG_1060 after which we recorded these signs IMG_1061 IMG_1062 that prepare us for Gregory's wedding.

We next went to Harvard Square where we met the Hagadorns IMG_1063 as Kaylen and Jane chatted IMG_1064 Ben IMG_1065 watched the dancers IMG_1066 before we went to the Au Bon Pain bathroom IMG_1067 which looked like a prison. Jane and Kaylen were amused IMG_1068 as Chris IMG_1069 took this picture of me IMG_1070 and we headed to the ice cream place IMG_1071 where after getting through the line IMG_1072 I decided not to have Guiness but rather to have this IMG_1073 which while good was not up to the ``world's best rating'' it was given. We next went to Harvard Yard and raced IMG_1074 IMG_1075 in the dark though occasionally Ben IMG_1076 IMG_1077 could be seen even as the dark lifted IMG_1078 and I emerged IMG_1079 for these group shots IMG_1080 IMG_1081 by the status of John Harvard. This person IMG_1082 was too busy to get our picture but these pictures IMG_1083 IMG_1084 were taken by this gentleman IMG_1085 though he missed Ben the first time.

Sunday morning, we paid tribute to Sen Lee IMG_1086 and saw the police car at the donut shop IMG_1087 where we got IMG_1088 and ate IMG_1089 IMG_1090 breakfast before heading to the fountain at the Science Center IMG_1091 and noting that Maxwell Dworkin IMG_1092 is almost Ben's pseudonym. After recording the potato famine IMG_1093 the ride of Paul Revere IMG_1094 and the living quarters of John Winthrop IMG_1095 we watched as they painted the man at Leavitt and Pearce IMG_1096 and recorded the garbage can IMG_1097 before Suzanne IMG_1098 took this picture IMG_1099 as Ben IMG_1100 noted the sign of the Inn and we gathered Sarah's bag IMG_1101 for the trip home. We paused en route to lunch to see the glass harmonica IMG_1102 which was partly interesting IMG_1103 before we went to Fire and Ice IMG_1104 for brunch IMG_1105 IMG_1106 IMG_1107 and after eating IMG_1108 had this gentleman IMG_1109 take our picture IMG_1110 even as we promised his group IMG_1111 that we would vote for Kerry and send George W Bush back to Crawford, Texas.

Our plan to take a family picture under the knowledge gate IMG_1112 was scuttled by a visit to the book store IMG_1113 and on our return IMG_1114 we just worried about being 2 minutes early for wheels up time IMG_1115 as we planned a stop at a similar gas station in Connecticut where we paid high prices IMG_1116 and had Jane wash the windows IMG_1117 as Sarah got the all important key IMG_1118 so that we could make the rest of our journey home. ../../Sabbat/2004/07.19-08.02.04July/ July, 2004 -- a quiet month I decided to see how few pictures I could take in July and got by with 4.

On July 19, I had lunch with Gary Walters (Director of Athletics) IMG_0976 on the 21st, I had lunch with Curt Callan (Physics) IMG_0977 on the 27th, I met with Colin Currie (OIT) IMG_0978 and on the 28th, I met with Mark Burstein (VP for Admin) IMG_0979 who is the new new kid on the block.

Then on August 2, this gentleman IMG_0980 asked to shake my hand, so I took his picture in return. ../../Sabbat/2004/06.27-30.04SuzanneBDayNewChairs/ Suzanne's birthday; a Few new chairs It was Suzanne's birthday, so just as we have done in

and many years when we took no pictures, we celebrated. Jane IMG_0936 Suzanne IMG_0937 Ben IMG_0938 and I IMG_0939 enjoyed the shakers IMG_0940 and bread IMG_0941 at Big Fish as the wine IMG_0942 came with salad IMG_0943 and crumblies IMG_0944 and Suzanne's fish IMG_0945 and Jane's chicken Caesar IMG_0946 accompanied Ben's burger IMG_0947 and my pizza IMG_0948 as the waitress IMG_0949 showed the menu IMG_0950 IMG_0951 but not herself.

As the meal progressed, we took more family photos of Jane IMG_0952 IMG_0953 Suzanne IMG_0954 IMG_0955 Ben's head IMG_0956 and Jane IMG_0957 before capturing Ben IMG_0958 and doing a number of self portraits IMG_0959 IMG_0960 IMG_0961 as dessert IMG_0962 and ice cream IMG_0963 arrived and the Big Fish IMG_0964 excited Ben IMG_0965 Jane IMG_0966 and Suzanne IMG_0967 not to mention this self portrait IMG_0968 as we then went to the movie IMG_0969 where after some bumbling IMG_0970 we found Lu and Weiss IMG_0971 and so called it a celebration.

Then, it was back to work with people who were not invited to Suzanne's birthday party. On June 29, I met with Scott Willett of HR IMG_0972 and then on June 30, I welcomed new chairs -- Nancy Bermeo (acting in Politics), IMG_0973 Lynn Enquist (Molecular Biology) IMG_0974 and Claudia Johnson (English) IMG_0975 before their terms began. ../../Sabbat/2004/06.18-26.04London/ A trip to London IMG_0001 IMG_0002 IMG_0003 IMG_0004 IMG_0005 IMG_0006 IMG_0007 IMG_0008 IMG_0009 IMG_0010 IMG_0935 ../../Sabbat/2004/06.09-13.04PeoplePhillyWeddingDinner/ People, places and food On Wednesday June 9, I met with Josh Ober IMG_0234 from Classics and UCHV and with Bill Tang IMG_0235 from PPPL and PiCSiE and then had lunch with Jon Cohen IMG_0236 from Psychology and CSBMB. This inspired me to take Frday off.

SO, on Friday, June 11, I went to Philadelphia and had this wonderful sandwich IMG_0237 for lunch before going to see Coffee and Cigarettes with DrLen. After the movie, we saw his neon camera IMG_0238 IMG_0239 IMG_0240 in its 3 modes and the greyhound IMG_0241 IMG_0242 in 2 modes and then went to his storage place to see the fish IMG_0243 the ice cream IMG_0244 a missed photo IMG_0245 more fish IMG_0246 DrLen's sculpture IMG_0247 the Pep Boys IMG_0248 and Sherwin Williams IMG_0249 before coming back to Princeton to see Jane's friends IMG_0250 and bring her and Ben IMG_0251 home with food from George's.

On Saturday, I saw Stef and his new wife IMG_0252 as Ben and I went on our mammoth walk and then saw the lobsters IMG_0253 as Suzanne and I went on our mammoth shop IMG_0254 for dinner on Sunday.

On Sunday, I dressed up IMG_0255 IMG_0256 IMG_0257 IMG_0258 IMG_0259 for Hank Farber's IMG_0260 wedding and then came home so we could entertain Carolyn IMG_0261 Lucy IMG_0262 and Michael IMG_0263 and Carolyn IMG_0264 again for dinner. ../../Sabbat/2004/06.02-07.04PeopleSarahsApartment/ Sarah goes to Cambridge Summer was upon us. Sarah had arranged an internship in Boston and found a place to stay in Cambridge, so we were slated to spend a weekend driving there and getting her settled. Before I could go, I had to meet with Yacine Ait-Sahalia IMG_0178 from the Economics department on June 2.

On June 4, we drove to Cambridge. Out hotel was in Kendall Square so we had a chance to see the Stata Center IMG_0179 IMG_0180 IMG_0181 IMG_0182 IMG_0183 in our neighborhood. This bodes well for the Lewis Library. We also recorded the outside IMG_0184 IMG_0185 and inside IMG_0186 of Kresge in case anyone ever did a project for their structures class about the construction. On our walk to Harvard Square for dinner, we took a few pictures IMG_0187 IMG_0188 of 881 Mass Ave.

Morning of Saturday, June 5 we went to Sarah's apartment where her room had a nice welcome IMG_0189 and even with her stuff in disarray IMG_0190 and the bed unmade IMG_0191 the light was good IMG_0192 so that we could go off and explore and look for Sarah's place of work IMG_0193 which came through better here IMG_0194 and then we recorded the front door IMG_0195 before heading to the nearby Boston Commons IMG_0196 where something was happening at the church IMG_0197 involving the man with the funny hat IMG_0198 who is barely visible even as Sarah IMG_0199 and the man with the pushcart IMG_0200 watched. On the walk back, we crossed hte Harvard Bridge and recorded 50 IMG_0201 then 100 IMG_0202 smoots before taking panoramas of the Camridge side IMG_0203 IMG_0204 and returning to 150 smoots IMG_0205 the halfway mark, IMG_0206 200 IMG_0207 and then 250 IMG_0208 smoots before capturing Baker House IMG_0209 and the Charles IMG_0210 and getting back to 300 IMG_0211 then 350 IMG_0212 and finally 364.4 smoots IMG_0213 and 1 ear. We recorded the infinite corridor IMG_0214 and then made our way to Sarah's apartment IMG_0215 with its front door IMG_0216 as her stuff IMG_0217 made its way into the closet IMG_0218 and her bed IMG_0219 made as the suitcase IMG_0220 was ready to be pushed under her bed for the summer. To celebrate, we went to the Mexican restuarant for dinner where I had this margarita IMG_0221 and we had enchiladas IMG_0222 IMG_0223 of varying sorts.

On Sunday morning, June 6, I packed my bag IMG_0224 as Sarah put on her shoes IMG_0225 and the water IMG_0226 stood guard as we recorded her clock IMG_0227 and fan IMG_0228 and the frisbe IMG_0229 that showed this was home before heading off to a large breakfast IMG_0230 IMG_0231 at which the people next to us ducked IMG_0232 so we took this gratuitous pictures of unknown people.

On Monday, June 7, back at work, I met with Sal Torquato IMG_0233 from the Chemistry department. ../../Sabbat/2004/05.28-06.01.04ReunionsGraduation/ Reunions and Graduation On May 28, to get ready for reunions, I had lunch with Dave Treadwell '89 IMG_0001 and then ran into Andrew Ford and a student IMG_0002 who were eating at Panera as I came home to talk to the Jefferson person IMG_0003 who fixed the toilets to everyone's happiness.

On Saturday, May 29, we woke up and Benjamin IMG_0004 decided to stay home and build as Jane IMG_0005 joined us for our walk to town where we ran into Noah and Hank Dobin IMG_0006 and then David Spergel IMG_0007 of the Astrophysics department at Small World. Next we saw my favorite waitress IMG_0008 ex- of PJ's and elsewhere who told us tales of living in Firestone Library in the late 60's. As Suzanne IMG_0009 made her call, the parade started IMG_0010 led by Ray Wadsworth IMG_0011 as Jane IMG_0012 marveled at the honor guard IMG_0013 and the Chen family IMG_0014 passed by though they couldn't get Jane to babysit. The patriots IMG_0015 and fife and drum corps IMG_0016 inspired Jane to get this muffin IMG_0017 as more patriots came IMG_0018 IMG_0019 IMG_0020 including this man with a weapon IMG_0021 and the bag pipers IMG_0022 who passed by IMG_0023 ahead of the 1960 Volvo IMG_0024 and the 1949 truck IMG_0025 who led Uncle Sam IMG_0026 and the very old car IMG_0027 which led the twirlers IMG_0028 and the marching band IMG_0029 not to mention the train IMG_0030 the girl scouts IMG_0031 and the flautists IMG_0032 who inspired us to investigate the carts that would take the classes of 1931 IMG_0033 and 1925 IMG_0034 through the parade as I paused for this self portrait IMG_0035 before the Spirit of Princeton IMG_0036 and Korean groups IMG_0037 IMG_0038 passed me by. The mayor's husband was there IMG_0039 as were Bob and Wanda Gunning IMG_0040 he of the math department and she of the historical society. After watching an emergency vehicle IMG_0041 a fire engine IMG_0042 and the Burlington City Music Band IMG_0043 pass us by, we knew it was time to go home to see what Ben IMG_0044 was doing and have a healthy lunch IMG_0045 as Claire and Sarah IMG_0046 prepared to make their way and Ben IMG_0047 waited for Alan IMG_0048 to bring Joel IMG_0049 to join us at the P-Rade. We said good bye to Jane IMG_0050 who was canoeing with her friends and went on to see Erik Sorenson (Chemistry) IMG_0051 and his wife, and Steven Sather and Jon IMG_0052 and the Ford family IMG_0053 also in a second pose IMG_0054 before finding this lady IMG_0055 who sold Suzanne IMG_0056 drinks so that we could feel better when we ran into Brian Kernighan IMG_0057 and then this electrician IMG_0058 who told us a slightly twisted history of the P-Rade as we watched the new arch IMG_0059 IMG_0060 and saw the class of 2004 IMG_0061 approach. After discussing with these gentleman IMG_0062 the greatest joys of reaching a 50th reunion, we headed to the Wawa where the canoeing gang IMG_0063 was waiting and where the twins IMG_0064 IMG_0065 (which is which?) talked about splashing as we saw a car deconstruct IMG_0066 and another IMG_0067 carry people from Joel's little league game inspiring another self portrait IMG_0068 until we got home and the boys IMG_0069 could do the computer thing as the older kids rested IMG_0070 IMG_0071 until the computer thing IMG_0072 inspired pizza pick-up IMG_0073 so we could look IMG_0074 as Lucy IMG_0075 got her drink and then eat IMG_0076 as we admired Jane's fingers IMG_0077 which seemed to inspire Seva IMG_0078 and Peter IMG_0079 to arrive together IMG_0080 as I took a few profiles IMG_0081 IMG_0082 and then a self portrait IMG_0083 and Peter shared his memory IMG_0084 as Ben Kaplan IMG_0085 IMG_0086 arrived to accompany Sarah.

So, we marched by generations starting with the PU students IMG_0087 then progressing to the JP students IMG_0088 and finally the older generation IMG_0089 IMG_0090 as we followed the crowd IMG_0091 and found our place IMG_0092 to sit IMG_0093 though self portraits IMG_0094 IMG_0095 didn't do so well and the fireworks pictures IMG_0096 IMG_0097 require some study.

We began Sunday May 30, with a walk into town. We ran into the Dimaggio/Mason's and Paul took this picture of us IMG_0098 after which I took this picture of them IMG_0099 before saying good bye to Suzanne IMG_0100 who was on the phone and heading to the baccalaureate. Once there, I ran into Stephen White and Kathy Rohrer IMG_0101 and then Pete McDonough and Maureen Nash IMG_0102 got ready to pose with JoAnn Mitchell IMG_0103 and I replaced my costume IMG_0104 for the next day.

That evening, Ben found this cicada IMG_0105 and showed it to Suzanne IMG_0106 before taking a closeup IMG_0107 so that we could head to TGIF for dinner and then see Shrek 2. My drink IMG_0108 led to 2 pictures of Sarah IMG_0109 IMG_0110 one each of Jane IMG_0111 and Suzanne IMG_0112 and this self portrait IMG_0113 though Ben chose to be replaced by the ketchup bottle IMG_0114 which was finally lit well IMG_0115 as the meals came with my veggie burger IMG_0116 and Jane's salad IMG_0117 in better light IMG_0118 and fries IMG_0119 and Ben's grilled cheese and fries IMG_0120 and Suzanne's salad IMG_0121 not to mention the mud IMG_0122 Ben had for dipping IMG_0123 at dessert as we cleared the table IMG_0124 bit IMG_0125 by bit IMG_0126 by bit IMG_0127 so that Sarah could experiment with pictures for which the flash was not used starting with me IMG_0128 then Ben IMG_0129 and Suzanne IMG_0130 IMG_0131 and Jane IMG_0132 before I captured her IMG_0133 and took some sister pictures IMG_0134 IMG_0135 IMG_0136 IMG_0137 none of which had enough light. After a few pictures of Ben with light IMG_0138 IMG_0139 and without IMG_0140 IMG_0141 IMG_0142 we captured his food IMG_0143 did some abstract work IMG_0144 IMG_0145 IMG_0146 IMG_0147 and took the ceremonial picture of the waiter IMG_0148 and then the girls' feet before calling it a day. IMG_0149

Tuesday, June 1, was the actual day of graduation. I first met the Leydons and JoAnn Mitchell IMG_0150 on my way to pick up Kao's IMG_0151 so that I could return and take many pictures beginning with Jeremy Adelman IMG_0152 and proceeding to Senator Sarbanes and Nan Keohane IMG_0153 and Jennifer Bolton IMG_0154 then Nancy Malkiel IMG_0155 and Dean Krugman IMG_0156 and Wes Harris speaking with Robert Moses IMG_0157 Jim Sturm IMG_0158 and Dubby Wynne IMG_0159 before I ran into Pete McDonough and Pablo Eisenberg IMG_0160 and posed with Pablo IMG_0161 as Sandy Sussman IMG_0162 passed by before I went back to capture Ruth Tennen, the valedictorian, between her advisor (Mark Rose) and a PADT winner, Alison Gammie IMG_0163 and Ellen Chances IMG_0164 and John Cooper IMG_0165 and Bill Russel IMG_0166 followed by Nancy Malkiel and Ruth Berkelman IMG_0167 which led to the actual parade. After the parade, I caught Charles Kao and John Fleming IMG_0168 and then ran into this friend from the PriCom IMG_0169 en route to the luncheon where I saw Steve Forrest IMG_0170 and Gregory Chow IMG_0171 before capturing ever growing pictures of Jim Sturm with his parents, IMG_0172 his wife and parents, IMG_0173 his wife, parents and us IMG_0174 and then we were ready to head home. Imagine our surprise when we ran into Sarah and Claire IMG_0175 with Amv IMG_0176 and her stuff IMG_0177 in the back seat.

Eszter Hargittai was nice enough to send along these pictures PUGraduation04-078 PUGraduation04-081 that actually show me in costume. ../../Sabbat/2004/05.23-27.04c3dinnerBenPlayEtc/ c/3 dinner, various people, Ben's play It started on the 23rd of May, when Sarah assembled her friends IMG_1474 for a salad dish IMG_1475 a pasta dish IMG_1476 a chicken dish IMG_1477 and a salad IMG_1478 but Ben IMG_1479 was more interested in the bread IMG_1480 and I had my Diet Snapple IMG_1481 so I was happy. Ben made it to the (almost) clean plate club IMG_1482 as Sarah and Suzanne IMG_1483 IMG_1484 IMG_1485 Claire and Joyce IMG_1486 IMG_1487 and Ryan (with a penchant for moving trunks) and John IMG_1488 welcomed Claire's new friend IMG_1489 and Jane IMG_1490 was incognito about finishing her food IMG_1491 and mine IMG_1492 though the light was better IMG_1493 for this picture.

Two nights later, on May 25, the tables IMG_1494 IMG_1495 were set, the servers IMG_1496 IMG_1497 IMG_1498 were ready, the plates IMG_1499 were there as was the carrot and asparagus dish IMG_1500 and the special dish IMG_1501 that ChefRob IMG_1502 had prepared and we admired the umbrella stand IMG_1503 and the flowers IMG_1504 as the bar IMG_1505 IMG_1506 was assembled and the flowers IMG_1507 and chess board IMG_1508 set the tone for bread and roll IMG_1509 as Sandra arrived to be greeted by Suzanne IMG_1510 and there followed the picture of the two IMG_1511 who organized the meal and the two chef's (ChefRob and ChefLarry) IMG_1512 who were cooking it.

On Thursday, May 27, I took a picture of Mark Hansen IMG_1513 of the English department who is staying and then headed off to Ben's school in the evening. This boy greeted us IMG_1514 as I took a self portrait IMG_1515 Jane IMG_1516 appeared distracted and Alan IMG_1517 wondered what the sleepover would be like. Ben's class filed in IMG_1518 and Suzanne IMG_1519 settled in behind us as the kids IMG_1520 sat down and the drama teacher IMG_1521 set the context. The children settled IMG_1522 IMG_1523 as the first story was read IMG_1524 and then a character emerged IMG_1525 IMG_1526 to tell his tale. Next, Ben IMG_1527 emerged and chased Joel IMG_1528 before they came together IMG_1529 and Ben IMG_1530 watched Joel catch some sleep IMG_1531 before they headed off IMG_1532 and the next story IMG_1533 IMG_1534 could be told. There followed another story IMG_1535 IMG_1536 IMG_1537 before Ben put on the Russian hat IMG_1538 for his tale of Sam Levin IMG_1539 who made the trip IMG_1540 from Russia's cold weather. The story unfolded IMG_1541 IMG_1542 and Sam (Ben) IMG_1543 was still in his hat with Bobby as the class gathered IMG_1544 IMG_1545 and a picture was missed IMG_1546 for further gathering IMG_1547 IMG_1548 IMG_1549 before they dispersed IMG_1550 and the story continued IMG_1551 complete with finger props IMG_1552 to end the tale. After a few more stories IMG_1553 IMG_1554 IMG_1555 IMG_1556 IMG_1557 IMG_1558 IMG_1559 IMG_1560 IMG_1561 we saluted the class IMG_1562 and Joel and Ben IMG_1563 made their way while Brian Blount posed IMG_1564 and then Ben posed for a number of hat pictures IMG_1565 IMG_1566 IMG_1567 IMG_1568 before I said hello to Dr. Ginsburg IMG_1569 and Ben showed us his Russia diorama IMG_1570 complete with map IMG_1571 colored in. On the way to the car, we saw this frog IMG_1572 and then this one IMG_1573 before we followed Suzanne IMG_1574 home with Ben IMG_1575 incognito in the back seat. ../../Sabbat/2004/05.14-22.04CampusEtc/ Campus, Concert, Play in New York, Etc. On Friday, May 14, I ran into Sarah on the campus. While we were talking, her friend Ara passed by and they posed together IMG_1367 and then we ran into Amv IMG_1368 who was on her way to New York for the weekend.

On Saturday, May 15, the 4 of us went into town (while I suspect Sarah worked (or worried) about her last exam). There were a few street crossings IMG_1369 IMG_1370 IMG_1371 that led to the usual disputes about whether it is valid to cross against the light if you can make it. But those debates were interrupted when we saw Celia Chazelle IMG_1372 and then Jane crossed the street to talk to Fred IMG_1373 while we ran into Rush and Heidi IMG_1374 and admired his hat. We made our way to the library and took a few pictures inside IMG_1375 IMG_1376 before sitting on the bench IMG_1377 and waiting for Jane to appear and cross the street IMG_1378 so that we could go to the Gap which is soon to close. Once there, Jane tried on a hat IMG_1379 I explored 3 shirts IMG_1380 IMG_1381 IMG_1382 to find my colors and Jane tried another hat IMG_1383 before Ben and I escaped to the fountain IMG_1384 and then we went to Talbots and waited IMG_1385 with the lemons IMG_1386 while Suzanne claimed her free shirts. Down the road, the jewelry store was closing IMG_1387 and someone was protesting Iraq IMG_1388 by hiding under a pillow case. We wish our president would be put under a pillow case but more on that later.

On Sunday May 16, Jane tried on Suzanne's robes IMG_1389 IMG_1390 IMG_1391 IMG_1392 until she got it right front IMG_1393 and back IMG_1394 and so could lounge IMG_1395 with Ben IMG_1396 as we headed off to the Kerry rally where this man IMG_1397 wanted to take a picture of me with Stu Schwartz and Mary Baum IMG_1398 as I took this picture of Suzanne and Carol Brown IMG_1399 and we listened to the speeches.

On Monday May 17 while waiting for Paul to pick me up, I studied our tree and recorded the cicadas IMG_1400 zooming in IMG_1401 IMG_1402 IMG_1403 for a once-in-seventeen years experience.

On Tuesday May 18, Suzanne and Jane IMG_1404 led the way to Johnson Park where Tony IMG_1405 arrived and after my profile IMG_1406 I caught this blind shot IMG_1407 of Tony and Kathy as Suzanne IMG_1408 chatted with them and Mike Snyder IMG_1409 sat a few rows ahead as the band entered IMG_1410 and Ben IMG_1411 came with the second group. After noting John Shea IMG_1412 we called it a day.

On Wednesday May 19, Carol Armstrong IMG_1413 from Art and Archaeology and the Program in Women and Gender came to chat.

On Thursday May 20, I chatted with Eduardo Cadava IMG_1414 from the English Department and Bob Cava IMG_1415 the new head of the Chemistry Department.

On Friday May 21, Sarah was emptying the minivan IMG_1416 as Joel and Ben IMG_1417 hung by the tree and Sarah and Amv IMG_1418 showed their strength and Amv IMG_1419 her power sources so that we could find Steven Just IMG_1420 at the Rusty Scupper parking lot and begin the trip towards the Lincoln Tunnel IMG_1421 heading towards EZ Pass IMG_1422 and into the lanes IMG_1423 and eventually to the city IMG_1424 where out help was needed and the city traffic IMG_1425 hardly needed this traffic cop IMG_1426 as we took our ticket IMG_1427 and got in line IMG_1428 to leave the car so that we could go to the restaurant IMG_1429 where Seva and Peter IMG_1430 settled in and after my missed shot IMG_1431 I captured Steven and Sara IMG_1432 and Suzanne IMG_1433 and then took this self portrait IMG_1434 before the apple martini IMG_1435 and cosmo IMG_1436 from the waiter IMG_1437 made the appetizers IMG_1438 IMG_1439 IMG_1440 look so good as the pepper waiter IMG_1441 brought a last appetizer IMG_1442 that set Peter off IMG_1443 before the main courses.

After capturing my main course IMG_1444 in the dark, I lit up Steven's IMG_1445 and Suzanne's IMG_1446 and my cheese IMG_1447 and the Kramers IMG_1448 IMG_1449 in some order before we said good bye to the waiters IMG_1450 who will be looking for their picture on the web and posed outside the restaurant IMG_1451 IMG_1452 IMG_1453 while admiring the girl across the street IMG_1454 for her hair and cell phone before walking to the play IMG_1455 which was enough to amuse Steven IMG_1456 as we began the walk back and Sara chatted on the phone IMG_1457 while Suzanne and Seva IMG_1458 chatted and Peter IMG_1459 fiddled so that I could take this self portrait IMG_1460 and then this elegant shot of an inspirational sign IMG_1461 before checking out the bathroom sign IMG_1462 and having my iced decaf coffee IMG_1463 and pastries IMG_1464 that couldn't wake up Suzanne IMG_1465 even as Peter brought me photos IMG_1466 that wouldn't take int he light.

On Saturday May 22, I began the day with possible passport photos of Ben IMG_1467 IMG_1468 and Jane IMG_1469 IMG_1470 before parking next to this car IMG_1471 at the library IMG_1472 and having this gentleman IMG_1473 explain why our paperwork was not in order for Ben and why our picture was not good for Jane. So, it will be another journey. ../../Sabbat/2004/05.11-13.04AuthorsTea/ Authors Tea It was author's tea. In previous years, we went to authors tea back in 2002 and a few times before the advent of digital photography. But, before I could go, I looked out of my office window one day and saw some of Ben's classmates (on May 11). IMG_1303 On the next day, May 12, I took pictures of Coe Evans IMG_1304 and Lorrie McGough from the IMG_1305 housing department.

Finally, on Thursday May 13, it was time for the main event. Ben IMG_1306 came into frame IMG_1307 and let me past the 5th grade exhibit IMG_1308 to his classroom IMG_1309 where he went in IMG_1310 to see the various foods IMG_1311 including tomato and cheddar sandwiches IMG_1312 cucumber and cottage cheese sandwiches IMG_1313 and peanut butter rollups IMG_1314 that Meredith IMG_1315 IMG_1316 had made. After looking at the list of presentations IMG_1317 we admired the wafer pencils IMG_1318 and chocolate chip pan cookie (with a message) IMG_1319 along with the foods IMG_1320 IMG_1321 that we didn't bring. We reviewed our food IMG_1322 IMG_1323 and Meredith IMG_1324 IMG_1325 and more food IMG_1326 IMG_1327 IMG_1328 IMG_1329 before the teacher (Ms. Sanderson) IMG_1330 and Suzanne IMG_1331 suggested that we say hello to Ed and Ryan IMG_1332 and have Ben lead us on a tour IMG_1333 of his work IMG_1334 of the class book IMG_1335 and his page in it IMG_1336 and then of his poem IMG_1337 in the book of poetry.

The kids then began to read their stories in turn IMG_1338 IMG_1339 IMG_1340 IMG_1341 IMG_1342 IMG_1343 IMG_1344 IMG_1345 IMG_1346 IMG_1347 IMG_1348 IMG_1349 IMG_1350 IMG_1351 with Suzanne listening IMG_1352 as after one more IMG_1353 it was Ben's turn IMG_1354 IMG_1355 IMG_1356 IMG_1357 and then he gave up the stage IMG_1358 and the stories continued IMG_1359 IMG_1360 IMG_1361 IMG_1362 IMG_1363 which built up a large appetite so that the food was finished IMG_1364 and we could go but stopped on the way out to record this person IMG_1365 and Ben's artwork IMG_1366 to end a creative day. ../../Sabbat/2004/05.07-09.04DrLenSlaughterMothersDay/ School is Closed, A day in Philly, the new Dryer, dinner with the Slaughters and Mother's Day It was Friday May 7 and everything seemed like normal until we got to the Valley Road Building where Jane was supposed to take her AP exam. Once there, we discovered that there had been a lightning strike at the school and so everything was closed for the day. So, John IMG_1180 and Frank and Fred and Jane IMG_1181 and Kaylen IMG_1182 and Devon IMG_1183 came with backpacks IMG_1184 to amuse Jane IMG_1185 IMG_1186 IMG_1187 as Kaylen and Frank IMG_1188 ate cereal IMG_1189 and the meds IMG_1190 led to a phone call IMG_1191 or two IMG_1192 but didn't deter me from my day.

I drove to Philadelphia (2140) IMG_1193 and there was DrLen IMG_1194 excited about his computer IMG_1195 as we planned the day and stared at the refrigerator IMG_1196 and bottles IMG_1197 and plates IMG_1198 so that we would know where DrLen should call for food IMG_1199 as I admired the art work IMG_1200 IMG_1201 while the ordering continued IMG_1202 and we eventually got to PrimoHoagies IMG_1203 to buy our food. We drove past the red pepper sign IMG_1204 and the people on the corner IMG_1205 as I took this self portrait IMG_1206 while we followed the yarn truck IMG_1207 past the Free Library IMG_1208 until we parked and secured the car IMG_1209 at the Wissahickon IMG_1210 and followed the path IMG_1211 past the big tree IMG_1212 and under the statue IMG_1213 to the bench IMG_1214 overlooking the water IMG_1215 where we settled and took out the food IMG_1216 and opened the wrapper IMG_1217 and drank the water IMG_1218 as the water below IMG_1219 and the bridge above IMG_1220 made the right setting from which to watch the fishermen IMG_1221 IMG_1222 and wonder if they both caught IMG_1223 IMG_1224 the same fish. Driving back on the parkway IMG_1225 I tried a new genre IMG_1226 which failed and got home where the kids IMG_1227 IMG_1228 looked like they hadn't moved.

On Saturday, Suzanne IMG_1229 and I went to Mrs. G's IMG_1230 where this man IMG_1231 sold us a new dryer. Back at home, the kids IMG_1232 IMG_1233 were still on the couch IMG_1234 watching television even as we decided to go to dinner at Paulie's IMG_1235 and head into the house IMG_1236 after capturing Suzanne IMG_1237 and have Bill IMG_1238 and Martha IMG_1239 arrive to the amusement of our waiter IMG_1240 who is Jane's age and works 40 hours per week. After taking a self portrait IMG_1241 and a profile IMG_1242 Suzanne and I split this salad IMG_1243 and then the main courses IMG_1244 IMG_1245 and sides IMG_1246 IMG_1247 came along with my dish IMG_1248 and the dessert IMG_1249 and coffee IMG_1250 which made Martha make a call to Jane IMG_1251 and Bill wonder IMG_1252 as the day was done.

The next day was Sunday (May 9) and we celebrated Mother's Day as we had in the past
2003
2002
2001
so we got Jane up off the couch IMG_1253 and Suzanne IMG_1254 got ready as I IMG_1255 showed Jane IMG_1256 the mother's day flowers IMG_1257 and Ben IMG_1258 IMG_1259 and Jane IMG_1260 posed by the tree for the first (of many) sets of passport pictures.

Then we got into the car IMG_1261 and drove to Main Street IMG_1262 where we posed IMG_1263 IMG_1264 in various configurations IMG_1265 and then all together IMG_1266 IMG_1267 thanks to Ed Felten who was in Quizno's at the time (and is probably now very thirsty).

Once inside, the girls IMG_1268 sat on one side and Suzanne IMG_1269 on the end while Ben and I IMG_1270 IMG_1271 IMG_1272 IMG_1273 IMG_1274 took many shots to get an acceptable picture after which the bloody Mary's IMG_1275 and the con queso dip IMG_1276 came leading to more pictures of me IMG_1277 Ben IMG_1278 IMG_1279 IMG_1280 and Suzanne IMG_1281 before Jane took a good profile IMG_1282 and a few not so good IMG_1283 IMG_1284 and after some other tries IMG_1285 IMG_1286 IMG_1287 I caught the sister act IMG_1288 IMG_1289 to the amusement of our servers IMG_1290 as the salad IMG_1291 the burger IMG_1292 the sandwich IMG_1293 and the fallafel IMG_1294 came along with another burger IMG_1295 which led to a hair length competition IMG_1296 that was resolved by these two desserts IMG_1297 IMG_1298 after which we captured the women IMG_1299 and went to the drug store IMG_1300 to check out beanie babies IMG_1301 IMG_1302 as we celebrated a successful mother's day. ../../Sabbat/2004/05.04-06.04LunchesFacultyArt/ Faculty and Art On Tuesday, I had a luncheon for students including IMG_1156 IMG_1157 Ryan Teising '04, Chanakya Sethi '07, Joe Barillari '04, Matt Margolin '05, Sarah Dobkin '06, Amy Seng '04 and then meetings with IMG_1158 Jane Curry and IMG_1159 Anne St. Mauro of facilities.

On Wednesday, IMG_1160 Kofi Agawu of the music department came by for a discussion.

On Thursday, I met with IMG_1161 Chris Eisgruber, the new provost, before having a faculty lunch with IMG_1162 IMG_1163 Elizabeth Armstrong (Woodrow Wilson School and Sociology), Charles Beitz (Politics), Michael Cook (Near Eastern Studies), Suzanne Staggs (Physics), Hank Farber (Economics), Leora Batnitzky (Religion), Chang-Rae Lee (Creative Writing), Andrew Appel (Computer Science) from left to right around the table.

Then I went to see artwork IMG_1164 IMG_1164 IMG_1165 IMG_1165 IMG_1166 IMG_1166 IMG_1167 IMG_1167 IMG_1168 IMG_1168 IMG_1169 IMG_1169 IMG_1170 IMG_1170 IMG_1171 IMG_1171 IMG_1172 IMG_1172 IMG_1173 IMG_1173 IMG_1174 IMG_1174 and this picture that I took of the raw materials IMG_1175 that made many of the paintings. At home that evening, I did a practice IMG_1176 self profile and kept taking self portraits IMG_1177 IMG_1178 until I kept my eyes IMG_1179 at least partially opened. ../../Sabbat/2004/04.27-05.01.04WorkBenPartyBehrmann/ Lunches, Birthday Parties and the Behrmann Dinner This was a week in my life -- some lunches, some meetings with faculty, Ben's birthday party at a Trenton Thunder game and the infamous Behrman dinner.

It began on Tuesday with lunch in my office with the artists who did the pictures IMG_1058 Penelope Tang IMG_1059 Rosanna M Da Costa IMG_1060 Maia K. Schweizer each posing with her artwork for me to see. On the way home, I ran into Jane IMG_1061 who was on her way to a history review session.

On Wednesday, I had a faculty lunch for IMG_1062 IMG_1063 Aissata Sidikou-Morton (French and Italian), Su Fredrich (Visual Arts), John Fleming (English), Molly Greene (History), Clarence Rowley (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering), Larry Bartels (Politics and Woodrow Wilson School) and Jeanne Altman (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology). That evening, I took a few pictures of Sam Levin's tallis IMG_1064 IMG_1065 for Ben to use in his ancestors project.

On Thursday, Yoshiaki Shimizu (Art and Archaeology) IMG_1066 came to visit and then I had lunch with IMG_1067 Jim Sturm (Electrical Engineering and PRISM).

On Friday, I went to computer science and saw Andrew Appel IMG_1068 before heading back home to get ready for the ball game.

The boys assembled before 6 and there were pictures of Nathaniel and Joel IMG_1069 Ben and Sam IMG_1070 and then various groupings IMG_1071 IMG_1072 IMG_1073 before we made our way to the tree IMG_1074 and kept adding IMG_1075 until I tried to get everyone to look at me IMG_1076 IMG_1077 IMG_1078 with limited success. We drove on to the ball park IMG_1079 and the group in my car, posed first with the car IMG_1080 and then with the sculpture IMG_1081 IMG_1082 IMG_1083 before doing some climbing IMG_1084 IMG_1085 while waiting for the others to come and claim their pennants IMG_1086 which they did IMG_1087 just as the game was starting and Nathaniel IMG_1088 was wondering if he could throw out the first pitch before we reached our seats where the Thunder staff IMG_1089 brought our food IMG_1090 and gave us each some food IMG_1091 which Bobby IMG_1092 dug into as the game progressed IMG_1093 and Ben IMG_1094 IMG_1095 IMG_1096 decided not to turn around for a photo op but Nathaniel IMG_1097 was willing to mug for the game camera as the play IMG_1098 continued to the amusement of our group IMG_1099 especially when Boomer came to our section IMG_1100 IMG_1101 IMG_1102 IMG_1103 IMG_1104 IMG_1105 after which I felt compelled to try and get a group picture IMG_1106 IMG_1107 IMG_1108 IMG_1109 IMG_1110 and then went back to trying for a picture of Ben IMG_1111 without his head folded back IMG_1112 and finally succeeded IMG_1113 so that I tried for Bobby and Eddie IMG_1114 and then Nathaniel IMG_1115 before settling for a self portrait IMG_1116 and an image in profile IMG_1117 which was pretty good. Meanwhile, the moon was up IMG_1118 and surrounded by bats (the flying kind) that cannot be seen in the picture. The group watched IMG_1119 and Nate IMG_1120 moved out of the frame IMG_1121 as Joel IMG_1122 moved in and so, it was Nate in IMG_1123 and Joel in IMG_1124 before the game ended with a final score of 10-2 so that Bobby, Ben and Sam IMG_1125 could climb into my car for the trip home.

Saturday morning, I admired the tulips IMG_1126 IMG_1127 IMG_1128 before heading into town for this veggie burger IMG_1129 which looked better sans light IMG_1130 and then it was off to the bank where we met Kathy Ales IMG_1131 and then homeward with a stop to admire the Hummer IMG_1132 that was going to take the bride and groom away from their wedding.

Saturday evening, as Jane IMG_1133 and Ben IMG_1134 enjoyed the movie. Suzanne IMG_1135 and I IMG_1136 IMG_1137 IMG_1138 IMG_1139 and Suzanne again IMG_1140 IMG_1141 got ready not to play hoops IMG_1142 but to take the car IMG_1143 to the Behrmann dinner but not before Jane took these pictures of us IMG_1144 IMG_1145 IMG_1146 for posterity.

Once at the dinner, we met Eve Ascheim (Visual Arts) and her husband IMG_1147 IMG_1148 and then IMG_1149 P. Adams Sitney (Visual Arts) and Christine Stansell (History and Humanities Council) and IMG_1150 Froma Zeitlin (Classics) and Michael Wood (English); not to mention Karin Trainer the librarian IMG_1151 and Bob Fagels (Comparative Literatures) IMG_1152 who posed with Karen and Bill IMG_1153 and then with his wife Lynne IMG_1154 who had put the whole thing together.

As we were leaving, I captured this picture of Eva and Lionel Gossman IMG_1155 who were happy to know they'd be on the web site. ../../Sabbat/2004/04.23-25.04AFarewellToLigonier/ One last visit to Ligonier It was to be the last visit to Ligonier before the closing a few days later, so we gathered the family and Jane IMG_0796 got in the car at 7 minutes before wheels up time IMG_0797 as did Suzanne IMG_0798 so we could drive on past the expensive (and unfriendly) gas station IMG_0799 as the people in the back IMG_0800 and front IMG_0801 seats remained a little out of focus as we came to this rest stop IMG_0802 and paid these prices IMG_0803 to pump the gas IMG_0804 which built up my appetite for diet vanilla coke IMG_0805 and Suzanne's for what was in this Cinnabon bag IMG_0806 the contents of which escape me.

We drove on until we got to Ligonier and parked behind this jeep IMG_0807 and in front of this one IMG_0808 so that we could sample the specials IMG_0809 at the Ligonier Tavern. We were happy to wait IMG_0810 until Ben and Jane IMG_0811 were seated and this self portrait IMG_0812 caused the waiter IMG_0813 to offer to take a picture of Suzanne IMG_0814 but we weren't sure he could do better than I did. So, we ordered drinks for the men IMG_0815 and for the women IMG_0816 and my salad IMG_0817 and Suzanne's fish IMG_0818 Jane's salad IMG_0819 and Ben's burger IMG_0820 convinced our waitress IMG_0821 that after the pasta IMG_0822 we needed cheese cake IMG_0823 and coffee IMG_0824 before heading to the cabin.

Once there, I took this profile IMG_0825 as Suzanne IMG_0826 chatted on the phone and we admired the pin collection IMG_0827 and the fire place (with baskets) IMG_0828 the wreath IMG_0829 the owl IMG_0830 and the plates IMG_0831 and doll seats IMG_0832 before calling it a day.

The next morning, Jane IMG_0833 was wondering about the Romaine label IMG_0834 as we checked out the birds IMG_0835 and flowers IMG_0836 and walked past the bird bath IMG_0837 and hearth IMG_0838 until Ben climbed the stairs to the front door IMG_0839 and prepared to dive IMG_0840 before we made our way to the feeding trough IMG_0841 and fallen basketball hoop IMG_0842 past the cages IMG_0843 IMG_0844 and down the hill to the boxcar IMG_0845 where Ben tried to enter IMG_0846 and become one of the boxcar children even though he'd seen the posted signs IMG_0847 on the property. Back at the cabin, Jane spoke to the owl IMG_0848 and the owl IMG_0849 spoke back before Bobby Sauro and Maxine IMG_0850 arrived and Suzanne wrapped the owl IMG_0851 and we put it into the back of the car IMG_0852 for the journey home. Bob IMG_0853 IMG_0854 and Jane IMG_0855 and Ben IMG_0856 were having conversations IMG_0857 IMG_0858 in various directions before Suzanne and Milt IMG_0859 IMG_0860 and Norma, Jane and Ben IMG_0861 sat down and Ben IMG_0862 ducked out of my picture IMG_0863 while I captured Bob and Maxine IMG_0864 and this picture IMG_0865 that Bob IMG_0866 was also taking so that he IMG_0867 could head out to the sisters IMG_0868 for a conversation IMG_0869 as Norma and Jane sat IMG_0870 and Ben IMG_0871 hid IMG_0872 but was caught IMG_0873 IMG_0874 while Norma and Suzanne IMG_0875 IMG_0876 IMG_0877 discussed baskets, I took this self portrait IMG_0878 and Ben IMG_0879 pretended to be oblivious to Jane and Milt IMG_0880 IMG_0881 IMG_0882 even as Norma joined them IMG_0883 IMG_0884 IMG_0885 and he tried to hide IMG_0886 IMG_0887 but eventually joined the picture IMG_0888 IMG_0889 IMG_0890 IMG_0891 even as the cake was unveiled IMG_0892 by the caterer IMG_0893 in a happy moment IMG_0894 as the conversation continued IMG_0895 and Ben played Game Boy IMG_0896 in the corner.

The sisters IMG_0897 walked around as Suzanne IMG_0898 explored closets and the catering IMG_0899 worked with the first guests IMG_0900 to get the food out IMG_0901 as Jane IMG_0902 was amused by the cake IMG_0903 and the sisters IMG_0904 wanted more food IMG_0905 from the caterer IMG_0906 and even more came IMG_0907 to the amusement of Suzanne and Milt IMG_0908 as the bloody mary's IMG_0909 passed Norma's taste test IMG_0910 and we all IMG_0911 IMG_0912 IMG_0913 waited for the next person to come as nuts IMG_0914 were put out by the helpers IMG_0915 and Ben paid a lot of attention to the birds IMG_0916 IMG_0917 IMG_0918 IMG_0919 IMG_0920 IMG_0921 that were to come home with us.

Bob IMG_0922 the sisters IMG_0923 Ben and Suzanne IMG_0924 and Jane IMG_0925 waited as Maxine chatted with Norma IMG_0926 and Ann Sharon IMG_0927 Bob IMG_0928 and Jane IMG_0929 watched so that we knew it was time for group photos IMG_0930 then reorganized IMG_0931 IMG_0932 IMG_0933 IMG_0934 and then with replacements IMG_0935 and again IMG_0936 as Sally IMG_0937 Katie and Sam IMG_0938 and Andy and Debbie IMG_0939 arrived and Andy IMG_0940 posed for a closeup as the Davis' IMG_0941 came. Sally had something to tell Norma IMG_0942 and Bob spoke to Suzanne IMG_0943 as Phyllis spoke to Milt IMG_0944 and Ann Sharon and Debbie IMG_0945 shared Bloody Mary's as Bob amused Jane IMG_0946 and Katy joined IMG_0947 IMG_0948 even as she and her brother IMG_0949 were in the darkness that also captured Jane IMG_0950 as Ben hid IMG_0951 and was caught IMG_0952 even as he made his way to the children's table IMG_0953 IMG_0954 so that he IMG_0955 and Jane IMG_0956 could eat as Herb and his brother IMG_0957 arrived.

As Sally and Suzanne conversed IMG_0958 Ruby arrived IMG_0959 IMG_0960 and spoke with Jane IMG_0961 as conversations continued IMG_0962 IMG_0963 and Phyllis Davis IMG_0964 posed while others ate IMG_0965 as Herb IMG_0966 and his brother and Norma IMG_0967 made through the line and Bon Davis and Milt IMG_0968 chatted with Herb IMG_0969 and Norma Shapiro and Betty Lou IMG_0970 as the men posed IMG_0971 Sam got up close IMG_0972 and Herb spoke to mother IMG_0973 and daughter IMG_0974 as Sally and the Gespass (Pittsburgh) women IMG_0975 spoke and Jane IMG_0976 IMG_0977 wondered what Suzanne and the caterers IMG_0978 would do with this food IMG_0979 as the crowds outside IMG_0980 looked into the darkness IMG_0981 and Jane IMG_0982 spoke with Haim and Norma IMG_0983 IMG_0984 as Debbie IMG_0985 and Suzanne IMG_0986 watched and Maxine IMG_0987 photographed.

After some crowd shots IMG_0988 IMG_0989 IMG_0990 IMG_0991 and watching Bob IMG_0992 take this picture IMG_0993 as I took this one IMG_0994 it was time to bring out the cake IMG_0995 IMG_0996 IMG_0997 IMG_0998 and sing happy birthday as the crowd watched IMG_0999 IMG_1000 from both directions and the lights went out IMG_1001 so that the speeches could be made as the assembled IMG_1002 IMG_1003 IMG_1004 IMG_1005 watched Norma and Milt IMG_1006 IMG_1007 IMG_1008 and Suzanne and Bob IMG_1009 IMG_1010 watched me try twice IMG_1011 IMG_1012 to get Ben and Jane into the same frame even as I shot over everyone's head IMG_1013 and then got a few crowd shots IMG_1014 IMG_1015 as the other photographer IMG_1016 was capturing the cake IMG_1017 and Jane captured Ben IMG_1018 as her feet IMG_1019 and shadow IMG_1020 make for a self portrait by face IMG_1021 feet IMG_1022 and hands IMG_1023 while the discussion continued IMG_1024 IMG_1025 IMG_1026 and Ben IMG_1027 IMG_1028 IMG_1029 couldn't hide on the porch IMG_1030 as people assembled IMG_1031 IMG_1032 IMG_1033 and Haim looked like he was talking to the tree IMG_1034 IMG_1035 as the caterer and Bob IMG_1036 and Ruby IMG_1037 and Haim IMG_1038 prepared for the family portraits IMG_1039 IMG_1040 while Bob took the one IMG_1041 which also included me. After Bob IMG_1042 loaded his car IMG_1043 we called it a day.

Next morning, we packed the car IMG_1044 said one last good bye IMG_1045 as Jane IMG_1046 got in the car and we drove to the bagel factory IMG_1047 in Squirrel Hill before hitting the highway where everyone's legs IMG_1048 and feet IMG_1049 helped propel us to the rest area IMG_1050 where the turnpike map IMG_1051 told us where we were and Suzanne IMG_1052 and Ben IMG_1053 suggested where they wanted to be, as I ate my pizza IMG_1054 and Jane her Boardwalk fries IMG_1055 as Suzanne explored the gift shop IMG_1056 Ben checked out the video games IMG_1057 and all of us hoped to never eat another meal in Sbarro's.

Goodbye Ligonier. ../../Sabbat/2004/04.19-22.04AWeek/ A week On Tuesday (April 20), I went out to coffee with Zuckerman and Chip IMG_0787 my two favorite scholars of ancient dead languages. The next day, I met with Susan Wolfson IMG_0788 from English and then went to the celebration for the newly tenured Jacq IMG_0789 and Ross IMG_0790 shown with Rhonda. Also at the event was this woman IMG_0791 who even with her eyes closed IMG_0792 will be intelligible to the Justs since her son grew up with Richard.

On Thursday, I hosted lunch for IMG_0793 IMG_0794 Jeff Herbst (Politics and Woodrow Wilson School), Tom Funkhouser (Computer Science), Allen Rubin (Geosciences), Tamsen Wolff (English), Mirjam Fried (Slavic Languages and Literatures), Sandra Gillette (Dean of Faculty Office) and Joao Biehl (Anthropology) for lunch. Later that day, Frank Wojciechowski, the university photographer IMG_0795 came to take my picture. ../../Sabbat/2004/04.13-18.04WorkPeopleFrisbee/ People at the Office, Awards, Deans, Frisbee, Sarah Birthday It all started on Tuesday, April 13, when I had IMG_0626 IMG_0627 Mike Jennings (German), Hal Foster (Art and Archaeology), Shirley Tilghman (President), Stan Allen (Architecture), Susan Taylor (Art Museum) and Paul Dimaggio (Sociology) in for lunch. The next day, Wednesday, IMG_0628 IMG_0629 Michael Oppenheimer (Woodrow Wilson School and Geosciences), Peter Schaefer (Religion), Eldar Shafir (Psychology), Ken Steglitz (Computer Science), Alastair Wright (Art and Archaeology), and Yin Lu (Julie) Young (Civil and Environmental Engineering) came. On Thursday, IMG_0630 IMG_0631 Mccauley Peterson of OIT came to help work on our secret project.

Lunch that day was a major cause for celebration, IMG_0632 Lorraine Post (shown with her husband) IMG_0633 and Nita Cherry (shown with her husband) were being honored as outstanding employees (which they are!). Here they're shown with their supervisor, Kris Miller IMG_0634 and here with their supervisor's supervisor, IMG_0635 (that would be me). I went into Manhattan for dinner at the Harvard Club with Bill Kirby IMG_0636 who is my counterpart at Harvard. The next morning, Linda, Sheryl and Suzanne IMG_0637 headed off for a road trip bringing back pistachio nuts (see below) among other things.

Saturday morning, it was time for a Mary Kay IMG_0638 show and Pam and her friend IMG_0639 came with refreshments IMG_0640 and set the table IMG_0641 from this supply IMG_0642 as the guests began to arrive IMG_0643 with their driver IMG_0644 so that the party could begin IMG_0645 up close IMG_0646 and from afar IMG_0647 which made Ben and me know that it was time to go to the frisbee tournament.

The first person we saw there was Noah IMG_0648 and then Sarah IMG_0649 IMG_0650 in the distance as the other photographer IMG_0651 captured some pictures of the toss off IMG_0652 IMG_0653 after which Sarah joined Noah IMG_0654 for a group photo IMG_0655 on the sidelines before re-entering the game IMG_0656 IMG_0657 though I got distracted IMG_0658 IMG_0659 by my attempts to get a picture of the Vassar girl IMG_0660 with the serious red hair. Fordham IMG_0661 looked dejected as Princeton IMG_0662 got set to celebrate and Sarah IMG_0663 IMG_0664 IMG_0665 IMG_0666 IMG_0667 worked to open the gift IMG_0668 that Noah brought as she IMG_0669 introduced Ben IMG_0670 to friends from the team IMG_0671 and posed with them IMG_0672 before opening the gift IMG_0673 as people gathered IMG_0674 IMG_0675 to watch the process IMG_0676 IMG_0677 IMG_0678 IMG_0679 IMG_0680 until the gong appeared IMG_0681 and was struck IMG_0682 so that Sarah could pose with her friend IMG_0683 and then the siblings IMG_0684 IMG_0685 could join and then even I IMG_0686 could join before the team photos IMG_0687 IMG_0688 and the beleagured team IMG_0689 got ready to hear the winners IMG_0690 sing their praises.

This was the cue for Ben and me to get these groceries IMG_0691 at Wawa IMG_0692 and to bring his sandwich IMG_0693 and the drinks IMG_0694 and my sandwich IMG_0695 back as the team assembled IMG_0696 IMG_0697 and Ben got ready IMG_0698 IMG_0699 to watch.

Amv IMG_0700 arrived and I set her to the task of recording the action as the team got ready IMG_0701 IMG_0702 for game 2 as Sarah posed IMG_0703 IMG_0704 with friends and Amv showed that she has the profile thing IMG_0705 down pat as she recorded us IMG_0706 and then the action IMG_0707 IMG_0708 IMG_0709 IMG_0710 against Columbia and on the sidelines IMG_0711 IMG_0712 IMG_0713 as the game heated up IMG_0714 IMG_0715 IMG_0716 and I did another self portrait IMG_0717 while Sarah IMG_0718 got vicious IMG_0719 on defense IMG_0720 and Ben started to get bored IMG_0721 though the action IMG_0722 continued as he IMG_0723 IMG_0724 pondered the world and the room mates IMG_0725 posed as he gathered our things IMG_0726 and made our way to watch the men IMG_0727 IMG_0728 though Ben IMG_0729 got excited when Suzanne IMG_0730 arrived because he didn't realize he'd be going to the concert IMG_0731 and not getting home until Sarah's cake IMG_0732 was half eaten. Sarah put on the birthday crown IMG_0733 and started opening IMG_0734 IMG_0735 taking a break to give us this card IMG_0736 which read better in the dark IMG_0737 and had a beautiful cover picture IMG_0738 so that she could open more IMG_0739 as Ben drank IMG_0740 and the chain IMG_0741 came out. She worked her way IMG_0742 IMG_0743 to trying it on IMG_0744 IMG_0745 and then moved on IMG_0746 to the next card IMG_0747 and present IMG_0748 which were shoes IMG_0749 that needed to be tried on IMG_0750 during which time Jane's text IMG_0751 and card IMG_0752 appeared. Jane IMG_0753 tried on the necklace as Sarah IMG_0754 showed her tan IMG_0755 and Jane watched IMG_0756 as Sarah showed her blister IMG_0757 and up close IMG_0758 then Sarah IMG_0759 tried on her hat IMG_0760 IMG_0761 IMG_0762 and Ben IMG_0763 dropped the incognito and showed his face IMG_0764 as Sarah IMG_0765 Ben IMG_0766 and Jane IMG_0767 watched Sarah IMG_0768 try on ear rings and get the next gift IMG_0769 as I did a self portrait IMG_0770 and a profile IMG_0771 and Sarah IMG_0772 tried on another ear ring IMG_0773 as the kids IMG_0774 IMG_0775 IMG_0776 watched the food and Jane's many attempts at profile got lots of Suzanne IMG_0777 IMG_0778 IMG_0779 and a little of Jane IMG_0780 whose expression of horror IMG_0781 was undoubted derived from a bad photo IMG_0782 and the pistachio nuts IMG_0783 IMG_0784 from Trader Joe's.

I finished the weekend in more sedate moments with my fellow deans IMG_0785 IMG_0786 Peter LePage (Cornell), Sharon Long (Stanford) and Peter Salovey (Yale). ../../Sabbat/2004/04.05-11.04SederPeopleEllisIslandBBallEtc/ Good bye to Karen, Seder, People, Ellis Island, Trenton Thunder, etc. It was Karen Mink's last day in the office, so we toasted her (or maybe she toasted us) with one glass IMG_0429 and then two IMG_0430 but no shots and beer. Then, it being the night of the first seder, we brought the fruit platter IMG_0431 to the Kramers IMG_0432 where the Kramer men IMG_0433 showed their unending love of the kiwi as our family IMG_0434 and Seva IMG_0435 watched and hoped that I could do a better self portrait IMG_0436 which I did IMG_0437 as Ben IMG_0438 showed his electricity project IMG_0439 and answered questions IMG_0440 from Peter.

Sarah IMG_0441 played the wicked role at the seder and then we caught the chocolate seder plate IMG_0443 and various views IMG_0444 IMG_0445 IMG_0446 of the fruit plate Ben made to compliment the kiwi we had already seen. After a few false starts IMG_0447 IMG_0448 we were ready to experiment on this 10 dollar bill IMG_0449 IMG_0450 IMG_0451 IMG_0452 with Peter's elegant pen IMG_0453 that let me pretend to be Larry Summers and memorialized our 3rd cup of win IMG_0454 so that Pesach could be suitably celebrated.

On Wednesday (April 7) I met with Margaret Miller IMG_0455 Andrew Gossen IMG_0456 and Leslie Jennings IMG_0457 from the alumni office to discuss their proposed alumni travel program. ON the way home, I met Vivek's new (actually not so new) baby IMG_0458 and Aravind and his friend IMG_0459 who were out for a jog. Then, on Thursday, I had a visit from Val Smith IMG_0460 and another from Daniel Sieworek IMG_0461 before Phillip Pettit IMG_0462 came by. In the afternoon, the Schmidt's came and their daughter and her friend (who happens to be Don Dixon's daughter) posed IMG_0463 as Wendy IMG_0464 took their picture before I got pictures of the 3 Schmidts IMG_0465 the four Californians IMG_0466 and the 2 Schmidts IMG_0467 and then a self portrait IMG_0468 to complete the collection.

On Friday, we celebrated that our new E-Z Pass IMG_0469 worked IMG_0470 as we made our way through this gate IMG_0471 to park the car IMG_0472 and walk the lot IMG_0473 past the trains IMG_0474 and the obligatory phone booth picture IMG_0475 until we could enter the train station IMG_0476 with its imagined IMG_0477 and real trains IMG_0478 and get our tickets IMG_0479 to wait in line IMG_0480 while walking past the vendors IMG_0481 outside the station IMG_0482 through a self portrait IMG_0483 a picture of the gang IMG_0484 and a not too bad profile IMG_0485 before the rules of security IMG_0486 became clear and we waited to clear the line IMG_0487 to get to the boat IMG_0488 with tickets IMG_0489 that would let us board IMG_0490 and accompany the 152 people from the Y in New Hampshire IMG_0491 on the crowded boat IMG_0492 that seemed to distress Ben IMG_0493 as I looked to the distance IMG_0494 but the family IMG_0495 didn't move as we got closer IMG_0496 and could see the Lady IMG_0497 who came even closer IMG_0498 until we disembarked at the sign IMG_0499 and took the requisite photos apart IMG_0500 and together IMG_0501 at the Ellis Island sign. Once inside, we bought tickets from this man IMG_0502 for a play that didn't allow photography and then headed to the over priced, under quality cafeteria IMG_0503 where the servers IMG_0504 sold us this food IMG_0505 and the pigeons IMG_0506 waited to see what we would leave.

Next we rented headphones and made our ways IMG_0507 IMG_0508 past the suitcases IMG_0509 to march IMG_0510 eventually to the big hall IMG_0511 and pace IMG_0512 and look at the ceiling IMG_0513 and head to the windows IMG_0514 where we could look at the hospital IMG_0515 and the rest of the island IMG_0516 and the city beyond IMG_0517 before getting tot he menu IMG_0518 in many languages IMG_0519 and pausing IMG_0520 to look below IMG_0521 and above IMG_0522 before seeing the tight cots IMG_0523 and the sinks IMG_0524 used by those who stayed.

I particularly liked these posters IMG_0525 IMG_0526 IMG_0527 IMG_0528 IMG_0529 IMG_0530 IMG_0531 of songs in many languages they had in the exhibit on immigration. As our tour wound up IMG_0532 IMG_0533 we headed for the gift shop IMG_0534 and then waited outside IMG_0535 IMG_0536 IMG_0537 as Ben took a few pictures of the other buildings IMG_0538 the grass and a cherry bomb IMG_0539 Suzanne IMG_0540 and our gift bag IMG_0541 before the boat IMG_0542 pulled all the way in IMG_0543 and we headed back tot he line IMG_0544 and took many pictures IMG_0545 IMG_0546 IMG_0547 IMG_0548 as we waited to board.

Once on board, there was the lady IMG_0549 and us IMG_0550 and the lady IMG_0551 and us IMG_0552 and the lady IMG_0553 and the skyline IMG_0554 and more pictures of the lady IMG_0555 IMG_0556 IMG_0557 interrupted by us IMG_0558 and then the lady IMG_0559 IMG_0560 IMG_0561 IMG_0562 IMG_0563 IMG_0564 IMG_0565 as we got closer and eventually docked at Liberty Island where we received a phone call and I chatted IMG_0566 as Ben watched IMG_0567 me chat further IMG_0568 IMG_0569 and Ben watched IMG_0570 and then went incognito IMG_0571 as I finished IMG_0572 but Suzanne talked IMG_0573 as the boat sailed on IMG_0574 and Ben could watch IMG_0575 as the phone call was finished IMG_0576 and we could head to our next destination.

Next we stopped to buy these shoes IMG_0577 from this man IMG_0578 as we got ready for dinner but had to take this collection sign IMG_0579 at the restaurant where my salad IMG_0580 and pasta IMG_0581 sans flash IMG_0582 accompanied Ben's spaghetti and meatballs IMG_0583 and Suzanne's fish IMG_0584 and Suzanne IMG_0585 and Ben IMG_0586 were more enthusiastic than it seems about the dessert IMG_0587 that came.

The next day, we went to Waterfront Park IMG_0588 where Ben IMG_0589 Suzanne IMG_0590 and I IMG_0591 got our seats and then went to get food IMG_0592 as the first pitches IMG_0593 were thrown and the umpires caucused IMG_0594 so that the game could happen after which we visited the more permanent fans and Ben IMG_0595 IMG_0596 then Ben and I IMG_0597 IMG_0598 IMG_0599 posed with them as the stadium IMG_0600 beckoned Suzanne to join me IMG_0601 to salute them.

On our way home, we stopped at this air station IMG_0602 and Ben showed off his Chase hand IMG_0603 and Yankees basketball IMG_0604 as I bought my air IMG_0605 for 50 cents so that we could venture forward to the mall where Ben IMG_0606 looked down on this booth IMG_0607 as we waited for Suzanne IMG_0608 to emerge from Macy's so that we could overlook this booth IMG_0609 before going to the game store IMG_0610 and the video store IMG_0611 where our purchases were made IMG_0612 and we looked down IMG_0613 before Ben IMG_0614 and Suzanne IMG_0615 decided that we could head home. Sunday morning, Ben put on his new shirt from Old Navy IMG_0616 which made him able to move faster than the camera but Suzanne posed IMG_0617 and we captured this picture IMG_0618 of spring and these pictures of the Easter egg hunt IMG_0619 IMG_0620 at Trinity before marching past the wedding IMG_0621 at the Methodist church on our way to the carousel IMG_0622 where Suzanne IMG_0623 and Ben IMG_0624 enjoyed their meal though we wished that Zorba and his wife IMG_0625 had kept one of their restaurants open for us. ../../Sabbat/2004/04.03-04.04EmilyWeddingBenBirthday/ Emily's wedding, Ben's birthday It was set to be quite a weekend. We remember the last wedding in Baltimore that involved the same people and many previous celebrations of Ben's birthday including

2003
and 2001 birthday and 2001 party
and 2000 with the sad observation that in 2002 my camera was broken and there was a shortage of new digital cameras.

But, it was clearly time for a celebration or 2, so we got ready to roll. So we packed the trunk IMG_0001 Suzanne and Sarah did their ritual handshake IMG_0002 and after Suzanne IMG_0003 got in the car, it was wheels up IMG_0004 only 54 minutes late. We hit traffic and so decided to take a short cut through Haddonfield where this person on the street IMG_0005 was celebrating Jane's history teacher IMG_0006 as we followed the traffic IMG_0007 past the gas station IMG_0008 and back onto the highway. When we approached the Delaware Memorial Bridge IMG_0009 I IMG_0010 was unhappy as was Suzanne IMG_0011 because the line IMG_0012 was long and we had forgotten our new E-Z Pass IMG_0013 so we didn't feel a little better IMG_0014 as the toll taker IMG_0015 went incognito. We drove on until a pit stop at which we left Sarah in the car to prevent theft IMG_0016 as Jane acknowledged the culinary choices IMG_0017 and the dress code IMG_0018 before we paid homage IMG_0019 to Maryland's finest. Once inside, Jane IMG_0020 picked the food IMG_0021 and we paid IMG_0022 so that Ben IMG_0023 would feel nourished as we drove on IMG_0024 to the line IMG_0025 at the next toll booth and finally got Baltimore IMG_0026 and the hotel in our sites IMG_0027 where this fine man (grandson of P"53) IMG_0028 gave us one of our rooms with a less than ideal view IMG_0029 of the parking lot. As the girls IMG_0030 got ready to go upstairs, Suzanne called IMG_0031 to see if our other room would ever be ready. The views from Dansyl's room of the harbor IMG_0032 IMG_0033 and the tall ship IMG_0034 were excellent even as Benjamin got his monopoly game IMG_0035 and assembled it IMG_0036 as a way to fight boredom.

Next it was time to get dressed. I failed not once IMG_0037 but twice IMG_0038 to capture myself, so I tried the mirror trick IMG_0039 before deciding that Benjamin could take a better picture of me IMG_0040 before turning to his toes IMG_0041 over which he was watching Georgia Tech take an early lead over OKState IMG_0042 in the game that mattered. Jane appeared and posed with Ben IMG_0043 and then with Suzanne IMG_0044 IMG_0045 before Ben IMG_0046 ducked out of the picture and headed for the window IMG_0047 where he posed IMG_0048 and then went further IMG_0049 and further IMG_0050 into the curtains until he was totally obscured IMG_0051 though he did emerge IMG_0052 and use his game IMG_0053 as a decoy as Sarah appeared IMG_0054 and showed her hair IMG_0055 before posing with Suzanne IMG_0056 and taking my picture IMG_0057 as we gathered IMG_0058 for an almost whole family portrait IMG_0059 and then a few of the children with Ben looking bored IMG_0060 then dorky IMG_0061 then sleepy IMG_0062 then bashful IMG_0063 which made us wish that we could remember all seven of the dwarfs.

Downstairs, we ran into Larry IMG_0064 and a reluctant Janet IMG_0065 who eventually got with the plan IMG_0066 as Suzanne, Jane and Ben IMG_0067 sat as DanSyl IMG_0068 and Fran IMG_0069 arrived. Sylvia IMG_0070 had one group IMG_0071 then a larger group IMG_0072 then an even larger group IMG_0073 and then a substitution IMG_0074 gather for photos as Isabel and Peter IMG_0075 joined Larry and Penny IMG_0076 joined Fran. Meanwhile, Sarah and Janet IMG_0077 and Jane and Suzanne IMG_0078 were watching the conversation IMG_0079 before we went into the ceremony and saw Michelle and Jason IMG_0080 and got their attention IMG_0081 before the ceremony began.

After the ceremony, Jane, Fran and Michelle IMG_0082 did the sister thing while Ben IMG_0083 watched until Suzanne joined IMG_0084 IMG_0085 for a pair of pictures as I went off to meet Lynn IMG_0086 and Yitz IMG_0087 and chat with Bob IMG_0088 while trying to get the perfect picture IMG_0089 IMG_0090 of the most interesting guest, but more on that later.

It was family time with Betsy and Matt IMG_0091 DanSyl IMG_0092 and Dick and Larry posing IMG_0093 before we grew the nuclear family, one IMG_0094 by one IMG_0095 as Jane and Eric IMG_0096 and then Barbara too IMG_0097 watched as Ben and Sarah IMG_0098 led us past Andy, our host, IMG_0099 to our table where the other brothers and wives IMG_0100 were waiting to see if we would join them for the perfect picture IMG_0101 IMG_0102 IMG_0103 for which, you gentle viewer, can be the judge. Adam and Bonnie IMG_0104 IMG_0105 appeared and DanSyl IMG_0106 made Fran and Dick IMG_0107 stir as Rachel and Suzanne posed IMG_0108 IMG_0109 IMG_0110 for their collection of pictures to the amusement of Janet and Larry IMG_0111 and Dick and Fran IMG_0112 as I showed that my skill at self portraits IMG_0113 IMG_0114 had slipped away so that Jane had to join me IMG_0115 and then pose alone IMG_0116 so that Fran IMG_0117 IMG_0118 would do the same even as the rest of the table IMG_0119 conversed and Rachel explained something IMG_0120 to Suzanne. It was time for more pictures at our table with Fran and Dick IMG_0121 and a few tries IMG_0122 IMG_0123 IMG_0124 to get Larry's expression right and then Penny IMG_0125 and Peter IMG_0126 as Sarah and Ben IMG_0127 saw if the three children IMG_0128 IMG_0129 IMG_0130 could produce a good group picture. At this point, DanSyl IMG_0131 happened by and chatted with Fran IMG_0132 before posing for pictures with Fran and Dick IMG_0133 IMG_0134 then Janet and Larry IMG_0135 IMG_0136 and finally Larry and Suzanne IMG_0137 into which PhotoShop may be able to paint this finer face IMG_0138 with more hair. A dark salad IMG_0139 was served as the table engaged in conversation IMG_0140 IMG_0141 and Ben decided to see if Larry could amuse him IMG_0142 before the sorbet came IMG_0143 and Ben did variations on his sleeping on the table IMG_0144 IMG_0145 IMG_0146 IMG_0147 IMG_0148 which brought Barbara over IMG_0149 to try and massage his back IMG_0150 IMG_0151 to energize him or at least Larry and Penny IMG_0152 who led to the dance floor. Bob and Isabel IMG_0153 dined as Bonnie and Rachel IMG_0154 posed as did Ben, Suzanne and Jane IMG_0155 and Fran, Dick and Janet IMG_0156 while Dick brought Eric to the table of the next generation IMG_0157 so that they could talk man talk with Matt IMG_0158 while I went back to my delicious vegetarian dinner IMG_0159 and walked to the wedding cake IMG_0160 with Sarah who seems to need to show me her body parts feet IMG_0161 IMG_0162 then hands IMG_0163 IMG_0164 as we gathered her and Ellen together IMG_0165 IMG_0166 to see if they were twins when their glasses were off. Ellen and Brian IMG_0167 posed and then we went outside where I captured the others IMG_0168 IMG_0169 but missed severely on an attempted profile shot IMG_0170 before getting closer IMG_0171 so that I felt comfortable about having these groups photos IMG_0172 IMG_0173 which Eric IMG_0174 took before he took the pictures of my next generation IMG_0175 IMG_0176 IMG_0177 and I got Dick's family assembled IMG_0178 for a collection of group photos IMG_0179 IMG_0180 IMG_0181 IMG_0182 IMG_0183 which made me feel like the day was done.

The next morning, our bed IMG_0184 showed the effects of sleep but Janet IMG_0185 and Larry IMG_0186 looked like they needed more though Suzanne IMG_0187 seemed awake as Fran and Sylvia IMG_0188 hugged goodbye. We ventured out IMG_0189 to the street IMG_0190 and crossed to the fountain IMG_0191 IMG_0192 so we could take pictures IMG_0193 as we walked through IMG_0194 which amused Larry IMG_0195 but made us realize that it was going to be a cold day.

As others checked out of the hotel IMG_0196 we drove past the Bromo Seltzer clock IMG_0197 inspiring Sarah to do an artistic portfolio IMG_0198 IMG_0199 IMG_0200 IMG_0201 even as the road IMG_0202 distracted but she was soon back IMG_0203 IMG_0204 IMG_0205 IMG_0206 IMG_0207 IMG_0208 with another break IMG_0209 before more orchids IMG_0210 IMG_0211 IMG_0212 IMG_0213 a traffic scene IMG_0214 or more IMG_0215 IMG_0216 and more orchids IMG_0217 IMG_0218 IMG_0219 IMG_0220 IMG_0221 IMG_0222 with closeups IMG_0223 IMG_0224 IMG_0225 of traffic IMG_0226 and even of the seat sticker IMG_0227 then back to orchids IMG_0228 IMG_0229 IMG_0230 IMG_0231 IMG_0232 IMG_0233 IMG_0234 IMG_0235 IMG_0236 before we mercifully parked the car IMG_0237 on the neighbor's grass and headed into the house IMG_0238 where Eric and Barbara IMG_0239 greeted Larry and Janet IMG_0240 as Betsy ate IMG_0241 while Ben played IMG_0242 and Suzanne IMG_0243 and Fran IMG_0244 ate though Dick and Jane (remember reading about them) IMG_0245 IMG_0246 posed without baby Sally. Not to be outdone, Fran IMG_0247 IMG_0248 posed with Sarah IMG_0249 though they don't seem to have ever had their own basal reader. The food, IMG_0250 coffee, IMG_0251 groom's cake, IMG_0252 cookies IMG_0253 and other desserts IMG_0254 amused the crowd IMG_0255 IMG_0256 IMG_0257 as Bob IMG_0258 IMG_0259 IMG_0260 and then Sarah and Jane IMG_0261 IMG_0262 IMG_0263 posed for picture triples before Sarah and Emily IMG_0264 IMG_0265 decided to do the twins with glasses pictures.

Meanwhile, our attempt to get a picture of him IMG_0266 was interrupted by the cocktail hot dogs IMG_0267 as Barbara conversed IMG_0268 and Larry approached him IMG_0269 for the group picture IMG_0270 that Dick joined IMG_0271 so that we could have a family portrait. At this point, Larry and Janet were feeling lonely, so Sarah and Dick agreed to pose as their children IMG_0272 IMG_0273 so that their whole family could be represented at the wedding. After saying our good byes to Rachel and Toba IMG_0274 IMG_0275 IMG_0276 we followed this car IMG_0277 whose tags may never have existed as I drove IMG_0278 into the frame IMG_0279 and except for a few required orchid pictures IMG_0280 IMG_0281 and a pass of the Gilman School IMG_0282 IMG_0283 where we noted that our water IMG_0284 IMG_0285 was paid up we got to Betsy's house where we entered IMG_0286 IMG_0287 IMG_0288 group by group to see a crying baby IMG_0289 and a sleeping baby IMG_0290 and after some discussion IMG_0291 Suzanne and Jack IMG_0292 IMG_0293 IMG_0294 IMG_0295 IMG_0296 IMG_0297 IMG_0298 did a major bonding ritual with a break to record the play area IMG_0299 and then more bonding IMG_0300 IMG_0301 IMG_0302 IMG_0303 IMG_0304 IMG_0305 as Sarah and Emma IMG_0306 IMG_0307 IMG_0308 IMG_0309 IMG_0310 had a bonding ritual of their own though Betsy IMG_0311 interrupted one picture IMG_0312 as Suzanne and Jack IMG_0313 did nothing to amuse Ben IMG_0314 though Pat IMG_0315 seemed happy to see Emma IMG_0316 with Sarah IMG_0317 as Suzanne bounced Jack IMG_0318 and Sarah held Emma IMG_0319 IMG_0320 so that the twins IMG_0321 IMG_0322 could bond with each other as Dick IMG_0323 tried to capture the image and Jane and Pat IMG_0324 watched IMG_0325 into the darkness. There followed a potpourri of pictures IMG_0326 IMG_0327 IMG_0328 IMG_0329 IMG_0330 IMG_0331 IMG_0332 some of which were recorded IMG_0333 against a backdrop IMG_0334 of amusements. This is what they saw IMG_0335 unless they were shooting in this direction IMG_0336 or waiting for Jack to get in his seat IMG_0337 as the girls watched IMG_0338 and Emma got in her seat IMG_0339 for fun IMG_0340 so that we could all watch IMG_0341 IMG_0342 and Betsy and Matt IMG_0343 IMG_0344 IMG_0345 opened the gifts Suzanne had brought (not for them).

Next, the candles were lit IMG_0346 on the birthday cake and Ben IMG_0347 IMG_0348 stepped up to the challenge and blew them out IMG_0349 so that we could celebrate IMG_0350 and he could open his gifts IMG_0351 IMG_0352 IMG_0353 IMG_0354 IMG_0355 IMG_0356 before an attempt to get a family picture from afar IMG_0357 and close up IMG_0358 IMG_0359 as Fran took IMG_0360 one that looked like this IMG_0361 and the food was served IMG_0362 IMG_0363 as Ben did magic toothpick tricks IMG_0364 and I got a good self portrait IMG_0365 before the basketball men appeared IMG_0366 IMG_0367 encouraging me to take some self profile pictures IMG_0368 IMG_0369 that are among my best. After noting that the creme filled Krispy Kremes IMG_0370 were left, we hit the road, following this Gilman car IMG_0371 to the toll booth IMG_0372 where they charged an exorbitant rate IMG_0373 and then the cheaper toll booth IMG_0374 though Jane IMG_0375 slept through the journey until we got to Market Fair IMG_0376 and I toasted Ben's birthday with pizza IMG_0377 washed down by Diet Snapple IMG_0378 while he had birthday hot dogs IMG_0379 IMG_0380 so that we could see the family movie he had picked.

Back at home, Ben turned to the first of the accumulated gifts IMG_0381 IMG_0382 IMG_0383 while I posed in my raincoat IMG_0384 IMG_0385 IMG_0386 IMG_0387 IMG_0388 IMG_0389 IMG_0390 IMG_0391 IMG_0392 IMG_0393 IMG_0394 from all sides and Ben continued the process by opening the next gift IMG_0395 IMG_0396 and the one after that IMG_0397 IMG_0398 IMG_0399 IMG_0400 IMG_0401 IMG_0402 IMG_0403 IMG_0404 IMG_0405 IMG_0406 and yet another IMG_0407 IMG_0408 IMG_0409 IMG_0410 IMG_0411 IMG_0412 IMG_0413 IMG_0414 and a final gift IMG_0415 IMG_0416 IMG_0417 IMG_0418 IMG_0419 IMG_0420 IMG_0421 IMG_0422 IMG_0423 IMG_0424 IMG_0425 IMG_0426 IMG_0427 IMG_0428 before declaring it a very active and very enjoyable weekend.

Good life together, Emily and Jim.
Happy birthday Ben ../../Sabbat/2004/03.25-04.01.04PartyPeopleEtc/ Faculty party, Ben concert, Visitors to 9 Nassau Hall, etc. It was time for another faculty party, so the table started to be set IMG_1322 as Chef Rob got the veggies out IMG_1323 and the bartenders IMG_1324 got things set up IMG_1325 as Suzanne descended IMG_1326 and Josephine IMG_1327 got the house in order.

The flowers IMG_1328 looked better IMG_1329 sans flash. The evening allowed for tables outside IMG_1330 and on the patio IMG_1331 IMG_1332 as ChefRob IMG_1333 and Rissa IMG_1334 and Joe their helper in training IMG_1335 got things ready. I checked IMG_1336 and no visitors were coming which was convenient because some food IMG_1337 wasn't done and some IMG_1338 was almost ready as the kitchen IMG_1339 had food IMG_1340 in all directions IMG_1341 ready to go IMG_1342 as the drinks IMG_1343 IMG_1344 were ready at the bar.

Saturday morning, we brought this package IMG_1345 to this gentleman IMG_1346 with the letter IMG_1347 returning the coat that didn't fit before we went to the toy store and one of the triplets IMG_1348 amused Jane IMG_1349 while Ben IMG_1350 IMG_1351 moved quickly to catch up with Suzanne IMG_1352 for their group picture IMG_1353 as the toy was bought.

We left the toy store thinking we were going for lunch but got side tracked looking at sinks IMG_1354 and tubs IMG_1355 as I posed IMG_1356 then Suzanne posed IMG_1357 but the lights IMG_1358 made me have to think before getting this self portrait IMG_1359 as one final sink IMG_1360 built our appetite so that we could go to Aljon's IMG_1361 where Suzanne had this salad IMG_1362 Ben had this sandwich IMG_1363 and I dreamed of life in good old Italia IMG_1364 and so it went.

On Tuesday (March 30) Brent Tomlinson of PAW IMG_1365 came to interview me about tenure. That evening, Suzanne and Jane IMG_1366 led our way to the school where the flash IMG_1367 obscured our view of Dr. Ginnsburg IMG_1368 but we still made our way to Ben's class where he showed his project IMG_1369 which Audrey IMG_1370 Jane IMG_1371 and Suzanne IMG_1372 admired as others gathered IMG_1373 IMG_1374 IMG_1375 IMG_1376 for the demo and Audrey and Suzanne IMG_1377 needed a second take IMG_1378 to get the right picture. After more project demos IMG_1379 IMG_1380 IMG_1381 we talked with Steve IMG_1382 and then asked the fish IMG_1383 about the teacher Ms. Sanderson IMG_1384 before a few last looks IMG_1385 IMG_1386 so admiration for Ben IMG_1387 as meeting leader. We walked past Alan IMG_1388 so that Suzanne could settle IMG_1389 behind the Blounts IMG_1390 and Nathaniel and Rhonda IMG_1391 arrived and Nathaniel IMG_1392 came to sit with Jane IMG_1393 Suzanne IMG_1394 and me IMG_1395 as I attempted (first blocked by Nathaniel's hand) IMG_1396 to achieve a good profile IMG_1397 which finally worked though Jane had more problems with hers IMG_1398 as Jack and Linda IMG_1399 moved in behind us so that the kids could assemble IMG_1400 and by playing with camera settings I could get a good picture IMG_1401 or two IMG_1402 before our collection of blown shots IMG_1403 IMG_1404 IMG_1405 IMG_1406 even as we admired Kathy Klockenbrink IMG_1407 and her efforts IMG_1408 to video tape the whole event. After capturing Ben IMG_1409 in all his glory, I spoke to Mike Snyder IMG_1410 who posed IMG_1411 and then we were on our way.

On Thursday, April 1, Dave Srolovitz IMG_1412 agreed to chair MAE. I hope this wasn't an April Fool's joke. Then I admired the new paperweight IMG_1413 IMG_1414 Steve North sent from New Zealand and had a faculty lunch IMG_1415 IMG_1416 with Sankaran Sundaresan ( Cehmical Engineering), Karen Bennett (Philosophy) and Daniel Heller-Roazen (Comparative Literature) seated and Ben Ellman (East Asian Studies and History), Bonnie Bassler (Molecular Biology), Sanjeev Kulkarni (Electrical Engineering) and Alan Blinder (Economics) standing. ../../Sabbat/2004/03.24-25.04ThisWeek/ A week of people IMG_1316 IMG_1317 IMG_1318 IMG_1319 IMG_1320 IMG_1321 ../../Sabbat/2004/03.16-21.04JoeCaTrip/ Hanging Joe, Going to California Before I could leave on my trip, we had to pay homage to Joe for 6 wonderful years as dean, so we gathered the old and new IMG_1083 IMG_1084 and the staff IMG_1085 IMG_1086 IMG_1087 and I tried to appear wise IMG_1088 as Joe appeared relaxed IMG_1089 and the staff looked on IMG_1090 IMG_1091 IMG_1092 until the ceremony began IMG_1093 and the cover was removed IMG_1094 to acknowledge his good work IMG_1095 as refreshments were served IMG_1096 IMG_1097 IMG_1098 IMG_1099 though I had to leave in time to get to the airport IMG_1100 so I could board this plane IMG_1101 and be served this meal IMG_1102 that looked only slightly better when opened IMG_1103 and tasted no better.

On the other side, I walked through the airport IMG_1104 followed the directional signs IMG_1105 got my baggage IMG_1106 and spoke to this Avis lady IMG_1107 who put me in this car IMG_1108 for the trip to the hotel.

Once at the hotel, I admired the view of the pond IMG_1109 IMG_1110 IMG_1111 IMG_1112 and my neighbor's patio IMG_1113 and the pigeons IMG_1114 before coming back to my room IMG_1115 to begin the drive past Stanford IMG_1116 to Susan Goldman's house. My dinner began with this salad IMG_1117 from the menu IMG_1118 and then the main course IMG_1119 which engaged Tyler Goldman IMG_1120 Peter Potrebic IMG_1121 and Susan Goldman IMG_1122 in conversation. Before the evening ended, I got a picture of Pauline the cook along with Peter IMG_1123 but somehow I forgot to get a picture of Sydney and Josephine.

Next morning, I woke up and went to the front of the hotel IMG_1124 to wait for Jacobo for the ride to the beach. He arrived and en route got a phone call IMG_1125 about the Spanish elections. So, I recorded his dash IMG_1126 but missed the clock that said 10:13 and took a picture of this cone IMG_1127 but missed the lizard who was there. As a peace offering, he showed me the materials for the internal (blue) gaskets IMG_1128 that I know are being machined right now. We looked at the water IMG_1129 saw some beautiful flowers IMG_1130 IMG_1131 walked through the woods IMG_1132 looked down at the ocean IMG_1133 and after these flowers IMG_1134 promised to follow the rules IMG_1135 as we headed down to the beach for the trip home. The buoy IMG_1136 was a photo op IMG_1137 IMG_1138 for each of us as was the shore where Jacobo IMG_1139 IMG_1140 and I IMG_1141 IMG_1142 IMG_1143 posed for a handful of pictures each. After the obligatory coast scenes IMG_1144 IMG_1145 IMG_1146 we headed to Half Moon Bay for lunch. This was Jacobo's sandwich IMG_1147 and this was mine IMG_1148 which made Jacobo happy IMG_1149 as I took this self portrait IMG_1150 and he demonstrated this statuesque pose IMG_1151 from which he was able to take profiles IMG_1152 a skill I'm still working on. Next we asked this waitress IMG_1153 what to order from the menu IMG_1154 and the help posed with me IMG_1155 as the manager posed with Jacobo IMG_1156 and asked how to see his pictures on line. Our coffees IMG_1157 looked better IMG_1158 sans flash.

All of this made us want to drive on to more beach, so we found this offering IMG_1159 and a log IMG_1160 and then noted that structures IMG_1161 even structures where you could live IMG_1162 IMG_1163 but maybe not over night had been built with pieces from this forest IMG_1164 even as I recorded birds IMG_1165 who got closer IMG_1166 and closer IMG_1167 until they were at hand IMG_1168 and could be taken easily.

On the way back, we passed the house of hundreds (count them) of pink flamingos IMG_1169 IMG_1170 IMG_1171 IMG_1172 IMG_1173 IMG_1174 including these few on the stump IMG_1175 and the last few IMG_1176 before seeing the panoramic views of the valley IMG_1177 IMG_1178 that were striking.

Dinner was at El Paso where I had the vegetarian IMG_1179 made special and took pictures of Jacobo and Barbara IMG_1180 Barabara and Camila IMG_1181 and then the whole Valdes family IMG_1182 who were there. After demonstrating how Sandra's yoyo works IMG_1183 we called it a night.

Thursday morning, I started with a walk and noted the high cost of fuel IMG_1184 the the colonel IMG_1185 before seeing the Stanford team IMG_1186 which may not make the finals after all. I stopped at Hobbee's IMG_1187 and tried the Valdes profile method IMG_1188 but decided that Jesus IMG_1189 would have to take the good picture of me IMG_1190 as I consumed my fluids IMG_1191 and the tofu scramble IMG_1192 to start the day.

Once I was ready to go to the city, I tried to get a good profile shot IMG_1193 IMG_1194 IMG_1195 IMG_1196 IMG_1197 without much luck and then took a self portrait IMG_1198 after which I got closer IMG_1199 and finally perfected the technique IMG_1200 so that I was ready to go to the city. Somehow I forgot to take a picture of Henry Wendt '55 (what kind of spell came over me??) but did get a picture of Liz Ebel IMG_1201 and our wonderful parking spot.

For dinner, I went to Sto'a IMG_1202 and had this main course IMG_1203 to the amusement of Mel Goldman IMG_1204 and then this dessert IMG_1205 and decided to call it a day and watch basketball.

Friday began with some word processing IMG_1206 where one stupid mistake meant that I had to recreate the story of the previous pictures I took. I had lunch with Sharon Long IMG_1207 who comes closest to being my counterpart at Stanford and then headed off to Google IMG_1208 where the buildings were a little surreal IMG_1209 on the former SGI campus and the signage IMG_1210 led me to the lobby IMG_1211 where I was met and met Mike Boddicker '00 IMG_1212 on the way to meet with Eric Schmidt IMG_1213 shown here with his assistant who came with him from Novell (and Sun) until we met Pam Shore IMG_1214 who has also been with Eric along the way. After seeing this spiffy demo IMG_1215 of where queries come from, we discussed the company, the University, children, etc. until it was time for me to make my way to the Avis place IMG_1216 and return my car to this woman IMG_1217 who thanked me for taking her picture. On the other side, I took a shuttle ride that necessetated having some wine, so I was offered a choice of the house white IMG_1218 or the house red IMG_1219 along with some elegant nuts IMG_1220 as Sylvia IMG_1221 IMG_1222 and Dan IMG_1223 sat to visit with me.

We went upstairs for dinner where I had salad IMG_1224 pasta IMG_1225 and vegetables IMG_1226 as Sylvia ate chicken IMG_1227 and Dan had the rib eye steak. IMG_1228 I sprung for the tiramisu IMG_1229 at dessert and then captured Dan IMG_1230 and tried IMG_1231 IMG_1232 with the occasional successful picture IMG_1233 and others less so IMG_1234 IMG_1235 IMG_1236 and a good one IMG_1237 and some bad ones IMG_1238 IMG_1239 before a better one IMG_1240 to capture Sylvia who seemed to look better IMG_1241 next to David, our waiter. Gentle viewer, you are invited to offer your opinion about which was the best of the pictures.

Saturday morning, we claimed the car IMG_1242 from the garage for the trek to the pancake house IMG_1243 which was truly the original member of the chain. While waiting we decided not to enlist IMG_1244 and that these gas prices IMG_1245 demanding a trip to CostCo. I made a few attempts at capturing my profile IMG_1246 IMG_1247 but even though the coffee waitress IMG_1248 was amused, my self portrait IMG_1249 and those of Dan IMG_1250 and Sylvia IMG_1251 came out better even as the second coffee waitress IMG_1252 and our main waitress IMG_1253 came to look out for us. At her suggestion, I sprung for the chocolate chip pancakes with Whipped cream IMG_1254 and Dan got the omelette IMG_1255 while Sylvia had these eggs IMG_1256 and I started to wonder if I knew what I was doing and so took a second picture IMG_1257 of the many calories I was about to ingest even as Dan tried to break IMG_1258 the stringy parts of his omelette. All of this eating put us in good stead for CostCo where the hot dogs sold here IMG_1259 are world class and the gas prices IMG_1260 are lower. So, we made our way in IMG_1261 and through to the napkins IMG_1262 and then found Jason IMG_1263 who checked us out.

After the meal, we still needed another excursion and so we drove to the cove and parked IMG_1264 above the juggler IMG_1265 who was keeping even more balls in the air. A walk down to the beach led us to overlook the seals, some of whom slept IMG_1266 some of whom tried to get in the water IMG_1267 and many of whom IMG_1268 IMG_1269 formed their own colony as the sign IMG_1270 advised us. After getting a sign for Jane's Armani collection IMG_1271 we went to Mrs. Fields IMG_1272 noted the time IMG_1273 and had latte IMG_1274 decaf with skimmed milk to pass the afternoon.

I tried a few more profile pictures IMG_1275 IMG_1276 that were slightly better while watching Alabama IMG_1277 get ready to pull off a highly unlikely upset of Stanford. After anotehr profile try IMG_1278 and a self portrait IMG_1279 we drove through traffic IMG_1280 to see gas prices in San Clemente IMG_1281 as we parked by the book exchange and Cowabanga IMG_1282 and headed into the restaurant where Gregory IMG_1283 Erin IMG_1284 and Larry IMG_1285 were joined by Dan IMG_1286 as the waiter from Peekskil via Monmouth College IMG_1287 tried not to spill on Larry. The menu IMG_1288 suggested that I needed anoth jalapeno, pineapple and black olive pizza IMG_1289 as Erin had her grilled cheese sandwich IMG_1290 Larry had his tacos (for the first half of the meal) IMG_1291 Dansyl split the pasta IMG_1292 Gregory warmed up Larry's meatball sandwich IMG_1293 and Janet IMG_1294 had stirfry for the first of 2 days in a row. After a few bad tries at getting my profile IMG_1295 IMG_1296 and a reasonable self portrait IMG_1297 we began the self-profile contest (JTS would be proud) with Janet IMG_1298 Sylvia IMG_1299 Dan IMG_1300 Larry IMG_1301 Gregory IMG_1302 and Erin IMG_1303 each giving it their best shot before I took this IMG_1304 errant self-profile to show that I hadn't learned much.

After dinner, we went to the book store where I took 3 pictures IMG_1305 IMG_1306 IMG_1307 with too much flash and four pictures IMG_1308 IMG_1309 IMG_1310 IMG_1311 with too little flash before we ended the evening with this collection IMG_1312 IMG_1313 IMG_1314 IMG_1315 of group pictures. ../../Sabbat/2004/03.14.04JaneBirthdayParty/ Jane's birthday party It was time to have the official celebration of Jane's birthday in preparation for the sing-a-long of the Wizard of Oz at McCarter. We ordered pizza IMG_1040 and made salad IMG_1041 even as the first departee IMG_1042 said good bye to Jane IMG_1043 while the others IMG_1044 IMG_1045 gathered around the PS-2 and Fred, Lucy and Kaylen IMG_1046 were cozy on the couch. We checked out the works for Ben's electricity project IMG_1047 and then as I admired my pizza (jalapenos, pineapple and olives) IMG_1048 Ben IMG_1049 was watching television IMG_1050 as the table was set IMG_1051 and Kaylen, Fred and Lucy took a sample picture IMG_1052 before getting it right IMG_1053 as people gathered IMG_1054 and sat at the table IMG_1055 IMG_1056 IMG_1057 IMG_1058 and the birthday girl IMG_1059 made a weird face.

Ben and I decided to take a picture of my drink IMG_1060 and then his -- back IMG_1061 and front IMG_1062 as the birthday cake IMG_1063 appeared even as the assembled IMG_1064 acknowledged that there was pizza IMG_1065 IMG_1066 and a little salad IMG_1067 left over. The cake was prepared IMG_1068 and a few candles lit IMG_1069 in a process IMG_1070 IMG_1071 IMG_1072 IMG_1073 that eventually got them all (with just a few burnt fingers) so that Suzanne could bring it in IMG_1074 and place it before Jane IMG_1075 who blew out all but 1 candle IMG_1076 IMG_1077 IMG_1078 and then stared at the cake IMG_1079 IMG_1080 IMG_1081 before the cutting began IMG_1082 and we could finish the celebration of her 16th birthday. ../../Sabbat/2004/03.08-10.04PeopleJanesBday/ Leading up to Jane's Birthday The celebrations started a few days before. We didn't even invite Jane. But, first Dean Karlan (who is not a dean) IMG_0956 came by to visit. Then, I went to meet Michele IMG_0957 at Triumph where this was our waitress IMG_0958 and Ken IMG_0959 and Perry IMG_0960 were there from computer science as I finished with Kyle IMG_0961 from Chemical Engineering and the beer IMG_0962 caused the expected effect so that I could get this collection sign IMG_0963 before we took group pictures of those who came IMG_0964 IMG_0965 and those from computer science faculty IMG_0966 who didn't mind that I broke a glass IMG_0967 when trying to maneuver in a narrow place.

I had a faculty lunch IMG_0968 with IMG_0969 David Stern (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology), Erik Sorensen (Chemistry), Harriet Flower (Classics), Anthony Appiah (Philosophy and the Center for Human Values), Brigid Doherty (German), and Margaret Martonosi (Electrical Engineering) IMG_0970 and again.

Back at home, Kara IMG_0971 and Joel IMG_0972 appeared and posed for a family picture IMG_0973 before Joel and Ben IMG_0974 IMG_0975 IMG_0976 did a few tries at their twin brother act.

Meanwhile, the table was set IMG_0977 and Jane IMG_0978 had one IMG_0979 then two IMG_0980 balloons that delivered the important message. Josephine had made elegant vegetables IMG_0981 to go with the birthday cookie IMG_0982 and Jane was made blissful IMG_0983 by flowers IMG_0984 in every direction no to mention the meatballs IMG_0985 from Olive's. It took me two tries IMG_0986 IMG_0987 to get a proper self portrait because of the horn. Then, Jane modeled one IMG_0988 and the other IMG_0989 shirt from the Szabo's and the monopoly boxers front IMG_0990 and back IMG_0991 that dwelt on her concept of a mortgage.

There were grape leaves IMG_0992 and tortillas IMG_0993 but we kept thinking about dessert IMG_0994 as Suzanne IMG_0995 and Ben IMG_0996 also studied the chocolate IMG_0997 that caused us to put candles int he cookie IMG_0998 as Ben removed the struts IMG_0999 and seemed to suffer IMG_1000 while aiming to make a sculpture IMG_1001 from them. The candles came IMG_1002 as did the sparklers IMG_1003 and bit by bit IMG_1004 IMG_1005 IMG_1006 IMG_1007 things got lit while in the background IMG_1008 we thought about how to light even more IMG_1009 IMG_1010 and the first sparkler IMG_1011 which shone as the second IMG_1012 and third IMG_1013 and fourth IMG_1014 were lit. AS the candles burnt down IMG_1015 IMG_1016 Jane went at it IMG_1017 IMG_1018 until all were out IMG_1019 and we could cut the cake IMG_1020 hand out the slices IMG_1021 and begin to open the gifts starting with Ben's sea horse IMG_1022 Grandma's gift certificate IMG_1023 and some cards that barely photographed IMG_1024 IMG_1025 as Suzanne read IMG_1026 IMG_1027 and Ben did imitations of a monster IMG_1028 of a convict IMG_1029 and of a 10 year old IMG_1030 which inspired Jane to start with the clothes IMG_1031 IMG_1032 while Ben brought out his library book IMG_1033 which took better IMG_1034 away from the bright gold as Jane IMG_1035 IMG_1036 IMG_1037 tried on more clothes and we made more progress IMG_1038 on the birthday cookie and one last present was opened. IMG_1039

Happy Birthday Jane!!!! ../../Sabbat/2004/03.04.04People/ lunch and Marcia I had my first faculty lunch of the spring with IMG_0953 Sukru Hanioglu (Near Eastern Studies), Amaney Jamal (Politics), Linda Colley (History), Shivaji Sondhi (Physics), Anne Treisman (Psychology), Bernard Chazelle (Computer Science), Ze'eva Cohen (Theater and Dance) and took a second picture IMG_0954 before Marcia Snowden IMG_0955 came by. ../../Sabbat/2004/02.27-29.04Birthday/ Happy 14th Birthday It was my brithday and since I hadn't had a birthday since we were in Israel it seemed like a good time to take many pictures. This turned out to be easy because the celebration spread over 3 days.

It all began the Friday before with this cake IMG_0746 in the office for which Lin Ferrnad and Toni Turano IMG_0747 Karen Mink and Melinda Matlack IMG_0748 June Eige, Sunny Singh and Nita Cherry IMG_0749 Isabel Thompson IMG_0750 and Sandra Gillette IMG_0751 posed before these pictures of me and Kris Miller IMG_0752 IMG_0753 were taken because we were the birthday children. Ron Brachman, formerly of AT&T and now of DARPA, IMG_0754 stopped by for a chat and then I called it a day.

The next morning, this IMG_0755 was the remains of Jane's sleepover with the empty bottle from the night before IMG_0756 still on the table as Kaylen and Lulu IMG_0757 and Jane and Fred IMG_0758 had tiredness contests. The winners IMG_0759 celebrated as Suzanne IMG_0760 saluted Rosie IMG_0761 who was least tired and happy to see Nathaniel IMG_0762 and his new haircut IMG_0763 arrive before Michael IMG_0764 came to pick up Lulu.

Later in the day, Ben IMG_0765 moved into the camera IMG_0766 as Jane IMG_0767 showed us her math test IMG_0768 and Ben took these pictures of us IMG_0769 IMG_0770 IMG_0771 as we took one last look at Jane's exam IMG_0772 and headed off to pick up the others.

We parked the car IMG_0773 and walked to the restaurant IMG_0774 where bread was served IMG_0775 and Suzanne IMG_0776 Peter IMG_0777 and Steven IMG_0778 wondered if this was the best self portrait IMG_0779 I could do while Sara IMG_0780 and Seva IMG_0781 knew I could do better IMG_0782 before the wine tasting placemats IMG_0783 arrived and the glasses were stacked IMG_0784 IMG_0785 IMG_0786 for those who ordered flights. The bread and cheese IMG_0787 needed less light IMG_0788 but the olives IMG_0789 shone as did my mini-calzones IMG_0790 that looked as good as Peter's pasta IMG_0791 Suzanne's fish IMG_0792 and the sandwiches Seva IMG_0793 and Sara IMG_0794 had. Since the olive pits were mounting IMG_0795 and the olive cups IMG_0796 were empty IMG_0797 we knew it was time to get this picture for the collection IMG_0798 and start walking south IMG_0799 to the play. Along the way, we met Josh and Renee IMG_0800 who were quite surprised to see us and then we marched on IMG_0801 to the play IMG_0802 where the grave of Governor Tompkins IMG_0803 and the mock liberty bell IMG_0804 told us who'd been there first.

After a unique theater experience, we headed back north trying to stop in ChickaLicious IMG_0805 IMG_0806 rejecting the idea of the 2nd Avenue Deli IMG_0807 where the owner had met a sad demise IMG_0808 and the automat facade IMG_0809 was still preserved. We also walked passed this bakery IMG_0810 until we got to 71 Irving Place IMG_0811 and had this overly dry Snickers brownie IMG_0812 and lemon pie IMG_0813 with drinks IMG_0814 while the conversation IMG_0815 tried to sort out the hidden meaning in the play we had just seen.

Sunday morning was my real birthday. A fairly unique experience. Ben decided to record me opening gifts. I started with the clock IMG_0816 that came out of its box IMG_0817 and then was right for posing IMG_0818 IMG_0819 IMG_0820 IMG_0821 before I turned to the tie IMG_0822 IMG_0823 IMG_0824 and did even more poses. Next came Jane's card IMG_0825 IMG_0826 Ben's card IMG_0827 IMG_0828 Dansyl's card IMG_0829 IMG_0830 Frana nd Dick's card IMG_0831 IMG_0832 and Judy and Lenny's card IMG_0833 IMG_0834 which meant that it was time for Ben IMG_0835 and Sarah IMG_0836 to get ready so that I IMG_0837 could go to Chip's IMG_0838 IMG_0839 house for the party. Sarah and Michele were there IMG_0840 as was Jane IMG_0841 when the first food IMG_0842 appeared and the people IMG_0843 IMG_0844 amused themselves in conversation with Sarah IMG_0845 Andrew and Chip IMG_0846 Judy and Michele IMG_0847 seeing the food IMG_0848 as Carol IMG_0849 Jacq and husband IMG_0850 IMG_0851 and John Shea IMG_0852 were on the other side of the table. Bill and Martine IMG_0853 were in the kitchen when Martine IMG_0854 and Carolyn IMG_0855 announced their intentions to depart.

Bill was nice enough to be the photographer for this sequence of images of the presents being opened. He began with a crowd scene IMG_0856 and then the hostess IMG_0857 and Paul Dimaggio IMG_0858 IMG_0859 explaining university films while I posed IMG_0860 with the tame one and admired IMG_0861 IMG_0862 the others. I kept opening IMG_0863 as Suzanne and friends IMG_0864 wondered where we'd fit the coin sorter IMG_0865 in our house and Paul and Bernard IMG_0866 watched pennies IMG_0867 IMG_0868 being opened as Chip led the crowd IMG_0869 as they asked me to read and explain IMG_0870 IMG_0871 IMG_0872 while Jane and Lulu IMG_0873 watched as the big cards IMG_0874 amused many in the crowd IMG_0875 and the next card IMG_0876 amused the little ones IMG_0877 before some more pennies IMG_0878 amused Carol IMG_0879 Leslie and Kathy IMG_0880 and Will IMG_0881 IMG_0882 until I finished IMG_0883 IMG_0884 and tried to clean up the mess IMG_0885 as conversations continued IMG_0886 and I talked to Jane IMG_0887 as an incognito person IMG_0888 told Sarah, Martha and Andrew IMG_0889 to pay attention to the cakes IMG_0890 so that it could be an official birthday party.

back at home, Sarah recorded as I opened her presents IMG_0891 IMG_0892 and took out this shirt IMG_0893 with the message IMG_0894 I should have taken to the party. That done, IMG_0895 I opened IMG_0896 IMG_0897 the next package IMG_0898 with this shirt IMG_0899 IMG_0900 which brings a more subtle message IMG_0901 to those who read it. Then, I started on the big package IMG_0902 IMG_0903 IMG_0904 IMG_0905 IMG_0906 IMG_0907 IMG_0908 IMG_0909 IMG_0910 IMG_0911 IMG_0912 IMG_0913 from which emerged this raincoat IMG_0914 IMG_0915 IMG_0916 IMG_0917 which is elegant and will need to be a larger size and this card IMG_0918 IMG_0919 which the assembled IMG_0920 thought meant a new bow IMG_0921 IMG_0922 for Jane as Sarah escaped the presents IMG_0923 and did this gallery IMG_0924 IMG_0925 IMG_0926 IMG_0927 IMG_0928 IMG_0929 IMG_0930 of self portraits while I opened the present IMG_0931 IMG_0932 that after investigation IMG_0933 IMG_0934 IMG_0935 we decide was not for me since I don't wear these IMG_0936 though I am happy to try them on IMG_0937 before doing further investigation IMG_0938 IMG_0939 IMG_0940 and having Suzanne put it away IMG_0941 to the amusement of Jane IMG_0942 and Sarah IMG_0943 IMG_0944 as the package IMG_0945 as the package IMG_0946 led to snow IMG_0947 IMG_0948 and we studied the room IMG_0949 IMG_0950 IMG_0951 before I started to move the left overs (a weeks worth of food) IMG_0952 to the refrigerator for storage. ../../Sabbat/2004/02.11-27.04CampusPeopleBirthdayBegins/ People on Campus and then the birthday begins Various people came to visit including Marsha Gilman of the development office IMG_0733 who looked better here IMG_0734 and Martin Gilens IMG_0735 from Politics after which I decided to record the 10th decade IMG_0736 to see if I would be able to explain to Jacobo what was wrong.

Then there other visitors including Karen Jezierny (Office of the Vice President for Public Affairs) IMG_0737 Janet Dickerson (VP for Campus Life) IMG_0738 Bob Barnett (Vice Provost) IMG_0739 J. T. Miller (Development Communications) IMG_0740 Bill Browder (Mathematics) IMG_0741 and Irhan Aksay (Chemical Engineering) IMG_0742 who seemed to be the last before Maia Schweizer '04 came to get her art work IMG_0743 IMG_0744 for her senior exhibit and Lisa Biagas (Office of Human Resources) IMG_0745 came to advise on other matters. ../../Sabbat/2004/02.03-07.04FacultyAndBaltimore/ Princeton people and a visit to Baltimore to see the twins Before we left for Baltimore, I had to meet with Sandra Troian (Chemical Engineering) IMG_0613 Warren Powell (Operations Research and Financial Engineering) IMG_0614 Bruce Cavalier, Joe Bielamowicz, and Maureen McWhirter (the university auditors) IMG_0615 Francois Morel (Geosciences and Princeton Environmental Institute) IMG_0616 Miguel Centano (PIIRS and Sociology) IMG_0617 and David Botstein (LSIIG and Molecular Biology) IMG_0618

But then on Saturday morning, This breakfast IMG_0619 got Ben IMG_0620 going and the milk IMG_0621 fortified him so that could select the best colors IMG_0622 and make a birthday card for Joel IMG_0623 with this inside IMG_0624

Next, this sandwich IMG_0625 got Jane IMG_0626 into the car and we drove on until we saw this Baltimore scene IMG_0627 and this person from Baltimore IMG_0628 this ROWIE car (think boaters and floaters) IMG_0629 and this woman IMG_0630 who was smoking in her car. We soon got to their house IMG_0631 where Betsy was feeding Emma IMG_0632 while Jack IMG_0633 rolled on the floor. I did the Jack pictures IMG_0634 IMG_0635 IMG_0636 and then got the girls to help IMG_0637 IMG_0638 IMG_0639 IMG_0640 IMG_0641 as Emma IMG_0642 had her post-feeding timeout. Matt unwrapped IMG_0643 and was pleased with his stacking toy IMG_0644 and so went for the second present IMG_0645 while Betsy started with Jack IMG_0646 and his feeding. The second gift excited Matt IMG_0647 as Emma IMG_0648 earned the right to come to the photo gallery IMG_0649 IMG_0650 and show her face IMG_0651 before going thoughtful IMG_0652 IMG_0653 IMG_0654 and in need of a tickle IMG_0655 from Sarah. She liked Jane's hair IMG_0656 which went off limits IMG_0657 IMG_0658 IMG_0659 so she did her exploring IMG_0660 IMG_0661 IMG_0662 IMG_0663 put some fingers int he mouth IMG_0664 IMG_0665 IMG_0666 IMG_0667 IMG_0668 IMG_0669 IMG_0670 IMG_0671 tried to sneak out of camera range IMG_0672 and then went back to photo mode IMG_0673 IMG_0674 IMG_0675 IMG_0676 IMG_0677 IMG_0678 IMG_0679 IMG_0680 IMG_0681 until I checked out their room IMG_0682 and Larry IMG_0683 and Sylvia IMG_0684 arrived. Finally Emma IMG_0685 lost her cap IMG_0686 as Jack IMG_0687 looked at Grandma IMG_0688 and Emma IMG_0689 roamed with Sarah as the cheese (which I thought was the whole meal) IMG_0690 was set out.

As Jane checked out Jack IMG_0691 IMG_0692 Sylvia IMG_0693 IMG_0694 decided it was picture time and I took this self portrait IMG_0695 as my water IMG_0696 arrived to get a food picture IMG_0697 for Sylvia IMG_0698 to take. This IMG_0699 was Sylvia's next picture IMG_0700 as Larry IMG_0701 got Sarah, Emma and Jane IMG_0702 to pose IMG_0703 while Jack IMG_0704 IMG_0705 explored from his confines and Larry IMG_0706 called Toba while the womenfolk IMG_0707 IMG_0708 IMG_0709 IMG_0710 talked to the parents IMG_0711 about sleeping babies IMG_0712 food IMG_0713 babies together IMG_0714 Emma in her swing IMG_0715 and the meal IMG_0716 IMG_0717 IMG_0718 IMG_0719 IMG_0720 that got us all up IMG_0721 and eventually posed IMG_0722 IMG_0723 for Sylvia's picture IMG_0724 of this IMG_0725 and then another IMG_0726 which includes me :-) IMG_0727

Matt showed us the PU IMG_0728 onesie on Jack and we bade farewell to Emma IMG_0729 IMG_0730 IMG_0731 before heading to the streets of Baltimore IMG_0732 for the trip home. ../../Sabbat/2004/01.22-30.04FacultySnowDrLenCotillion/ Colleagues, collections and cotillion IMG_0422 IMG_0423 IMG_0424 IMG_0425 IMG_0426 IMG_0427 IMG_0428 IMG_0429 IMG_0430 IMG_0431 IMG_0432 IMG_0433 IMG_0434 IMG_0435 IMG_0436 IMG_0437 IMG_0438 IMG_0439 IMG_0440 IMG_0441 IMG_0442 IMG_0443 IMG_0444 IMG_0445 IMG_0446 IMG_0447 IMG_0448 IMG_0449 IMG_0450 IMG_0451 IMG_0452 IMG_0453 IMG_0454 IMG_0455 IMG_0456 IMG_0457 IMG_0458 IMG_0459 IMG_0460 IMG_0461 IMG_0462 IMG_0463 IMG_0464 IMG_0465 IMG_0466 IMG_0467 IMG_0468 IMG_0469 IMG_0470 IMG_0471 IMG_0472 IMG_0473 IMG_0474 IMG_0475 IMG_0476 IMG_0477 IMG_0478 IMG_0479 IMG_0480 IMG_0481 IMG_0482 IMG_0483 IMG_0484 IMG_0485 IMG_0486 IMG_0487 IMG_0488 IMG_0489 IMG_0490 IMG_0491 IMG_0492 IMG_0493 IMG_0494 IMG_0495 IMG_0496 IMG_0497 IMG_0498 IMG_0499 IMG_0500 IMG_0501 IMG_0502 IMG_0503 IMG_0504 IMG_0505 IMG_0506 IMG_0507 IMG_0508 IMG_0509 IMG_0510 IMG_0511 IMG_0512 IMG_0513 IMG_0514 IMG_0515 IMG_0516 IMG_0517 IMG_0518 IMG_0519 IMG_0520 IMG_0521 IMG_0522 IMG_0523 IMG_0524 IMG_0525 IMG_0526 IMG_0527 IMG_0528 IMG_0529 IMG_0530 IMG_0531 IMG_0532 IMG_0533 IMG_0534 IMG_0535 IMG_0536 IMG_0537 IMG_0538 IMG_0539 IMG_0540 IMG_0541 IMG_0542 IMG_0543 IMG_0544 IMG_0545 IMG_0546 IMG_0547 IMG_0548 IMG_0549 IMG_0550 IMG_0551 IMG_0552 IMG_0553 IMG_0554 IMG_0555 IMG_0556 IMG_0557 IMG_0558 IMG_0559 IMG_0560 IMG_0561 IMG_0562 IMG_0563 IMG_0564 IMG_0565 IMG_0566 IMG_0567 IMG_0568 IMG_0569 IMG_0570 IMG_0571 IMG_0572 IMG_0573 IMG_0574 IMG_0575 IMG_0576 IMG_0577 IMG_0578 IMG_0579 IMG_0580 IMG_0581 IMG_0582 IMG_0583 IMG_0584 IMG_0585 IMG_0586 IMG_0587 IMG_0588 IMG_0589 IMG_0590 IMG_0591 IMG_0592 IMG_0593 IMG_0594 IMG_0595 IMG_0596 IMG_0597 IMG_0598 IMG_0599 IMG_0600 IMG_0601 IMG_0602 IMG_0603 IMG_0604 IMG_0605 IMG_0606 IMG_0607 IMG_0608 IMG_0609 IMG_0610 IMG_0611 IMG_0612 ../../Sabbat/2004/01.07-13.04WillisVieques/ A trip to Vieques I met with John Willis IMG_0001 of the Near Eastern Studies Department and then noticed that the amaryllis IMG_0002 IMG_0003 in our kitchen was doing well, so it was time to go to the airport with Suzanne, Peter and Seva IMG_0004 and check our bags IMG_0005 so that we could head to Krispy Kreme IMG_0006 which made Peter IMG_0007 and Seva and Suzanne IMG_0008 IMG_0009 quite happy, maybe because they knew that this would be their meal IMG_0010 and this would be mine IMG_0011 the remains of which IMG_0012 were left for that strange person who would prefer a bagel at 40 degrees to a Krispy Kreme donut a few hours from fresh.

Before we knew it, the plane had landed and Suzanne IMG_0013 and Seva IMG_0014 were looking for our baggage while Peter IMG_0015 was looking for his voice mail because he'd already found the taxi that would take us past Roberto Clemente stadium IMG_0016 and through traffic IMG_0017 until the driver could pose with Peter in Fajardo IMG_0018 where we would eventually catch the ferry. Peter spoke with this policeman IMG_0019 and then we got closer to their conversation IMG_0020 and thought about some helados IMG_0021 while Suzanne IMG_0022 surveyed the boats and we wondered what to do with our baggage IMG_0023 while recording the obligatory phone booth picture IMG_0024 and heading down the street to look into the windows IMG_0025 of Jimmy's IMG_0026 which was unfortunately closed (for good?) so we brought our bags IMG_0027 back to the local cantina at the Hotel Delicioso where Suzanne IMG_0028 Peter IMG_0029 and Seva IMG_0030 admired the table tiles IMG_0031 as we watched the waitress IMG_0032 make our food. Peter prepared IMG_0033 to take a picture of me though the food IMG_0034 IMG_0035 looked much better. After our meal, Suzanne IMG_0036 relaxed by the sea as I recorded the Customs House IMG_0037 and these street signs IMG_0038 along with a close-up of the Pare sign IMG_0039 for someone's collection (I forgot who).

Once on board, Suzanne IMG_0040 followed this wisdom IMG_0041 as we pulled away from the shore IMG_0042 which made her quite happy IMG_0043 as Peter IMG_0044 was on the lookout for cloud formations IMG_0045 IMG_0046 I could record as Suzanne IMG_0047 phoned home and we watched the wake of the boat IMG_0048 analyzing how best to water ski across the waves. The ferry ride proceeded IMG_0049 until we started to see land IMG_0050 which got closer IMG_0051 and closer IMG_0052 while Suzanne and Seva IMG_0053 wondered how Peter IMG_0054 would get our bags off when we hit the shore IMG_0055 so that we could have the taxi experience which was too unique to even generate a single photograph. We will have to be contented with memories of how the driver knew where we would be staying regardless of what we told him and of the other passengers laughing at the radio program.

Once at our hotel, Suzanne led the tour of the main room IMG_0056 and the bathroom IMG_0057 with this signage IMG_0058 IMG_0059 before the Kramers returned IMG_0060 and we headed to dinner with them IMG_0061 and us IMG_0062 admiring the candle IMG_0063 as we had our first rum drinks IMG_0064 and found good uses for the flowers IMG_0065 IMG_0066 they came with. The meal itself was quite good with salad IMG_0067 that was not photogenic and Suzanne's fish, mushrooms and greens IMG_0068 and Peter's shrimp IMG_0069 before the dessert IMG_0070 led us to try decorating the table flowers IMG_0071 which may or may not have been real. We decided to claim the rental car IMG_0072 and call it a day so that we'd be ready the next day to check out beaches.

The next day Suzanne IMG_0073 was ready bright and early as I had my toast IMG_0074 and fruit IMG_0075 on this lovely plate IMG_0076 and then finished hers IMG_0077 and waited for Peter and Seva IMG_0078 to come through the brush with their suitcases IMG_0079 to store in our room IMG_0080 as we left the inn IMG_0081 to head towards the beach IMG_0082 where we saw these horses IMG_0083 who greeted us IMG_0084 as our first site before these traditional Caribbean scenes IMG_0085 IMG_0086 IMG_0087 as we unloaded the car IMG_0088 and headed to the beach IMG_0089 stopping to admire the fallen coconut IMG_0090 and wonder if it contained any milk. Sun Beach IMG_0091 IMG_0092 was elegant with light waves IMG_0093 as we set up IMG_0094 and admired the scene IMG_0095 and enjoyed the water before some rain came and we decided to drive on further.

We next entered the nature preserve IMG_0096 and drove on the bumpy roads IMG_0097 often seeing scenery like this IMG_0098 before we headed to the beach IMG_0099 at the point IMG_0100 and started to explore IMG_0101 to see what rocks IMG_0102 might be good for climbing by Peter IMG_0103 IMG_0104 or might give good views IMG_0105 or might be good for Seva IMG_0106 to collect shells and look for sea glass while David IMG_0107 IMG_0108 undoubtedly described the fish that got away. Meanwhile, our collection of artifacts IMG_0109 IMG_0110 was growing as Suzanne IMG_0111 and Peter and Seva IMG_0112 continued the search amid the rough seas IMG_0113 which had brought the shells through which Suzanne sifted IMG_0114 and of which Seva was choosing the very best IMG_0115 including this sea glass IMG_0116 as we did one last gather IMG_0117 put our treasure in the hat IMG_0118 and began the trek IMG_0119 back to the car IMG_0120 to head down this road IMG_0121 and continue the exploration along the bumpy road IMG_0122 IMG_0123 IMG_0124 until we found this hut at Blue Beach IMG_0125 and headed to the beach IMG_0126 after being sure that the bushes IMG_0127 were free of bandidos and the water IMG_0128 was clear.

But, before we could end the day, we needed to find the very elusive Orchid Beach. After a number of wrong turns, we finally found the left fork that came before the last right turn and were rewarded with this great water scene IMG_0129 that amused Peter IMG_0130 and Suzanne IMG_0131 as I marched out to sea. After various hand signals failed to orchestrate what could only be called a great possibility, I was waved in IMG_0132 and slowly IMG_0133 made my way IMG_0134 back into the fold where this conch shell IMG_0135 and this guide sign IMG_0136 suggested that we had to head to this store in town IMG_0137 where I could be fitted for these shoes IMG_0138 by this gentleman IMG_0139 and then pay these women IMG_0140 who had just gotten decoder rings that let them take this picture IMG_0141 so that I'd always remember where my Teva's came from. Peter and Seva IMG_0142 brought us the car keys and we stopped at this Esso station IMG_0143 en route to see Tom Wright where surprisingly we took no pictures.

Dinner that night involved these beverages IMG_0144 which looked better without the flash IMG_0145 as my salad and potato IMG_0146 and Seva's BLT IMG_0147 and the shared salad IMG_0148 were drowned out by the cheers from the football fans. I did manage to take the obligatory phone booth picture IMG_0149 even as Peter took the obligatory banana picture IMG_0150 so that we could end the day on the right tone.

Sunday began with a trip to our local beach IMG_0151 IMG_0152 where Suzanne IMG_0153 searched and I found this sea glass IMG_0154 that set her to further searching IMG_0155 as I recorded the scene IMG_0156 before we headed back to a breakfast IMG_0157 at which Peter IMG_0158 noted that Ben had lost a tooth even though our breakfast IMG_0159 was too soft to loosen a tooth. This lizard IMG_0160 amused the white rabbit IMG_0161 before we headed off to see the dogs IMG_0162 at the BioBay booking store where the dog theme IMG_0163 seemed to interact with the Island philosophy IMG_0164 that set the tone for our trip to Green Beach where this snake IMG_0165 was in the water as we explored IMG_0166 and saw the scenery IMG_0167 before Peter snorkeled away IMG_0168 and back IMG_0169 and Suzanne and Seva IMG_0170 admired one more conch IMG_0171 IMG_0172 before we decided to leave the refuge IMG_0173 with Suzanne IMG_0174 and head to the grocery store IMG_0175 from which we filled our trunk IMG_0176 for the journey back to Orchid Beach IMG_0177 where Peter took a picture IMG_0178 of this IMG_0179 and then I went into the water for long enough to get wrinkly fingers IMG_0180 before coming back to the salsa IMG_0181 and Peter's Sobe IMG_0182 properly oriented IMG_0183 and Seva's coke IMG_0184 and Suzanne's local beer IMG_0185 as we admired the beach IMG_0186 and Peter IMG_0187 observed our neighbors IMG_0188 as I observed my feet IMG_0189 and Peter IMG_0190 Seva IMG_0191 and Suzanne IMG_0192 did the beach thing as I recorded the panorama IMG_0193 IMG_0194 IMG_0195 IMG_0196 that was the sea and drank IMG_0197 to Suzanne's new flip flops IMG_0198 before recording the stick IMG_0199 of the bandido in training and the sky (to get to 200 pictures) IMG_0200 and Suzanne, Peter and Seva IMG_0201 at Red Beach ahead of the setting sun IMG_0202 as I IMG_0203 got ready to speak to this gentleman IMG_0204 from Philadelphia who might have been there to buy the island or might have been there for more nefarious purposes.

That evening, we picked up the Kramers at their new room IMG_0205 IMG_0206 which had this unreadable sign IMG_0207 and headed to the Media Luna IMG_0208 where Seva IMG_0209 Peter IMG_0210 Suzanne IMG_0211 and I IMG_0212 were amused by our waiter IMG_0213 from Minnesota who said he had seen us on the beach that day and told about his forthcoming trip to Sam's Club and the debate about the $20 plane ride or the $2 ferry ride. The service was great and the food was as good as could be, so we stopped to salute the chefs IMG_0214 who permitted us to stir the pot IMG_0215 before we headed home for the night.

Monday morning, I walked past our local cactus IMG_0216 and bush IMG_0217 to record Suzanne IMG_0218 as she approached IMG_0219 to head for the toaster IMG_0220 and adorn the meal with fruit IMG_0221 that made her happy IMG_0222 as I had my spreads IMG_0223 and she had her omelet IMG_0224 for breakfast. We admired the collection (including the rare blue sea glass) IMG_0225 of our neighbors, Megan and Kim (class of 1983) IMG_0226 who know Susan Taylor. After a stop here IMG_0227 to get more gas IMG_0228 we went to Media Luna IMG_0229 where the sky IMG_0230 and beach IMG_0231 looked good so we walked in IMG_0232 leaving the car IMG_0233 and admiring the drip castle IMG_0234 our neighbors made. In the rocks IMG_0235 IMG_0236 by the side of the beach were pretty coral IMG_0237 though we all decided IMG_0238 IMG_0239 to stay away from the sea urchins lest we bleed black. While on this beach, I perfected the self portrait first learning to focus IMG_0240 and then learning to discard the sun glasses IMG_0241 so that I would appear IMG_0242 while the others IMG_0243 explored. I decided to extend my technology to record my feet IMG_0244 in new sandals IMG_0245 with no seaweed in the picture. Next we parked at this sign IMG_0246 which explained nature and welcomed us to Navio Beach. The gang IMG_0247 watched the ships IMG_0248 and then we checked out the caves IMG_0249 before another self portrait IMG_0250 to show my skill was improving and pictures of the beach scene before IMG_0251 IMG_0252 IMG_0253 IMG_0254 IMG_0255 IMG_0256 IMG_0257 and after IMG_0258 IMG_0259 IMG_0260 IMG_0261 IMG_0262 my long stint in the water talking to the fish. This led to more self portraits IMG_0263 IMG_0264 IMG_0265 IMG_0266 IMG_0267 after which it was time to pack up the car IMG_0268 check out the sign IMG_0269 and drive down this road IMG_0270 to town where we saw the sales IMG_0271 and rental IMG_0272 ads before checking out the menu IMG_0273 at the Tiki Hut IMG_0274 and ordering IMG_0275 fine food. Their totem IMG_0276 stood near the only address IMG_0277 we saw in the town as we admired the coconuts IMG_0278 and I prepared IMG_0279 to drive us back to Orchid Beach for lunch. My lunch was the Bikini Blue (no onions) IMG_0280 and this diet Snapple IMG_0281 which didn't taste as good as it looked. My sandwich IMG_0282 did. Suzanne and Seva collected lots of shells IMG_0283 IMG_0284 IMG_0285 with this finger IMG_0286 to give size perspective and Peter IMG_0287 thought the seaweed ball IMG_0288 was reason to come out of the water IMG_0289 to have a detailed discussion IMG_0290 IMG_0291 IMG_0292 IMG_0293 IMG_0294 IMG_0295 with our ADD OCD inflicted IMG_0296 neighbor who had questionable housing status and really liked listening to Larry King as he interviewed Bill Cosby.

That night we took this school bus IMG_0297 to the BioBay IMG_0298 where the people in the water IMG_0299 IMG_0300 IMG_0301 did not look as good as Peter, Seva and Suzanne IMG_0302 swimming among the glowing plankton.

Dinner that night was at the Italian restaurant in town and the Kramers IMG_0303 and we IMG_0304 were ready for the wine IMG_0305 as we explored the menu IMG_0306 and had salads IMG_0307 and pasta IMG_0308 not to mention Suzanne's IMG_0309 Seva's IMG_0310 and Peter's IMG_0311 main courses as we met the owner IMG_0312 and I showed my ``about to be'' clean plate IMG_0313 to our waiter IMG_0314 who then brought dessert IMG_0315 and coffee IMG_0316 as we speculated about the group at the other table IMG_0317 seen from the other end as well IMG_0318 who turned out to be a group of students from RISD.

On our last day, we got up and went to our local beach IMG_0319 for one more search IMG_0320 for shells and sea glass brought on by the waves IMG_0321 as they came in IMG_0322 and my haul IMG_0323 was fine. Suzanne IMG_0324 and I IMG_0325 were ready to go as I took a final self portrait IMG_0326 and admired the chips IMG_0327 left behind while we went to the parking lot IMG_0328 and Suzanne took a few pictures of me IMG_0329 IMG_0330 and me one of the scene IMG_0331 and a few of her IMG_0332 IMG_0333 and the bilingual sign IMG_0334 before the Kramers drove up IMG_0335 and we loaded the car IMG_0336 for what would be a truly unique ride to the airport, hopefully never to be repeated.

Once at the airport, we checked in IMG_0337 and while we waited IMG_0338 for the planes IMG_0339 IMG_0340 we met this gentleman (PU class of 1971) IMG_0341 who reminded us that we had taken his picture in the group at dinner the night before. The baggage claim tags IMG_0342 allowed us IMG_0343 to head to the plane where the co-pilot IMG_0344 pretended to take my picture and the captain IMG_0345 insisted that he had never flown before as we checked out the plane IMG_0346 and then got on IMG_0347 feeling in a good mood IMG_0348 IMG_0349 because the car chase was over. The ride gave good scenery IMG_0350 IMG_0351 and since I was traveling with a physicist, I tried to catch a stroboscopic picture IMG_0352 IMG_0353 of the rotor in place but had no success, so I recorded us as we headed down IMG_0354 IMG_0355 IMG_0356 and then headed to the terminal building IMG_0357 where this van IMG_0358 took us to the car rental place IMG_0359 where these gentlemen IMG_0360 gave us the van that would take us to the grocery store where we could scour the ointments IMG_0361 and decide against the nuts IMG_0362 before having Kenneth Rivera IMG_0363 check us out to the amusement of this gentleman IMG_0364 from Orlando. We drove on IMG_0365 to El Portal IMG_0366 where this man IMG_0367 let us in to see the jungle growth IMG_0368 IMG_0369 including these beautiful flowers IMG_0370 and the croton IMG_0371 that led us to the visitor's center IMG_0372 across the bridge IMG_0373 over the jungle growth IMG_0374 that we all IMG_0375 admired IMG_0376 before heading in to the rain forest where we first encountered these falls IMG_0377 IMG_0378 at which we took a group picture of our group IMG_0379 and of the neighboring group IMG_0380 before heading to the trail IMG_0381 and winding down IMG_0382 down IMG_0383 down IMG_0384 around IMG_0385 across bridges IMG_0386 until we saw water IMG_0387 and took a picture of this gentleman IMG_0388 who was embarrassed that he stepped into our picture that he insisted on taking this picture IMG_0389 since he didn't realize he was the subject. After getting to the end IMG_0390 we stood on the bridge IMG_0391 and watched the guitar player IMG_0392 and the falls IMG_0393 IMG_0394 which were the main attraction for Peter IMG_0395 who took this picture IMG_0396 while I took this one IMG_0397 and we began the long walk back up the 434 steps. A few sites in the rain forest characterized our personalities IMG_0398 IMG_0399 IMG_0400 before we drove on past the Saint Just sign IMG_0401 and past the monument to the first governor IMG_0402 to this point IMG_0403 which was best illustrated sans flash IMG_0404 and then on to the rental car return IMG_0405 where we removed the luggage IMG_0406 and tags IMG_0407 and took the courtesy van to the airport IMG_0408 where we checked in IMG_0409 and Suzanne led the walk IMG_0410 to our gate where Suzanne's yawn and Peter's cell phone IMG_0411 gave the feel of the end of the vacation. As we prepared to board IMG_0412 we were happy that we hadn't lost our heads on vacation IMG_0413 even though the vegetarian IMG_0414 and regular IMG_0415 dinners eaten to completion IMG_0416 might have encouraged it.

Once back home, all we could do was reclaim our baggage IMG_0417 so that I could see Susan Taylor IMG_0418 the next day and somehow bring closure to the trip

On Friday, I ventured out into the snow and cold IMG_0419 to meet Betsy Haas IMG_0420 for this breakfast IMG_0421 at PJs so that we could compare our daughters' shared experiences at Princeton. ../../Sabbat/2004/01.01-04.04NewYearAndAquarium/ New Years Day and a Trip to the Aquarium On New Year's morning, we woke up to these bodies IMG_0593 IMG_0594 IMG_0595 left over from the night before's revelry. So, we gathered everyone together for the delayed Thanksgiving Day football game IMG_0596 IMG_0597 IMG_0598 IMG_0599 IMG_0600 IMG_0601 which came off with much less enthusiasm than the games when people have had some sleep the night before. Hopefully we can get back to the regular schedule next year.

Next, we went to the Dobbs-Allsop's New Year's Open House where Paul Dimaggio IMG_0602 had a new camera as Adam IMG_0603 ate and Suzanne discussed with Carol IMG_0604 the issues involved in husband photography IMG_0605 while I took not one IMG_0606 not two IMG_0607 not three IMG_0608 but four tries IMG_0609 to get the New Year's picture of the GittlePeople.

A few days later, Ben and I decided to say good bye to Suzanne and Pam IMG_0610 and drive South stopping at the Club Diner IMG_0611 where Ben IMG_0612 enjoyed the jukebox IMG_0613 while his bread (which I ate) IMG_0614 and meatballs IMG_0615 and my omelet IMG_0616 and toast IMG_0617 came before his ice cream IMG_0618 came for him to eat for dessert IMG_0619 and then we could record the fancy machine IMG_0620 in the entryway and head to the bridge to Pennsylvania IMG_0621 where we entered the aquarium complex IMG_0622 where the penguins IMG_0623 were being fed as this man IMG_0624 told us their story and we noted the indoors IMG_0625 as we passed the turtle IMG_0626 and headed for the petting pool IMG_0627 and then the displays IMG_0628 IMG_0629 IMG_0630 IMG_0631 IMG_0632 before catching up with the parrots IMG_0633 IMG_0634 and then going out for a view of the river IMG_0635 and Philadelphia across the way. Ben looked through the binoculars IMG_0636 and saw this IMG_0637 as this gull IMG_0638 IMG_0639 kept us company.

In the front yard, we met this dinosaur IMG_0640 whose egg IMG_0641 would be climbable after we checked out the skeleton IMG_0642 that let us climb in IMG_0643 IMG_0644 and out IMG_0645 before Ben took a ride IMG_0646 to the houses of the three little pigs IMG_0647 IMG_0648 IMG_0649 where the story IMG_0650 was told. After visiting the tea party IMG_0651 and climbing in IMG_0652 for a ride IMG_0653 we stopped to see Goldilocks IMG_0654 en route to the status of Walt Whitman IMG_0655 for whom the bridge is named. Ben took these pictures of me at the blank houses IMG_0656 IMG_0657 and this extra one IMG_0658 and then after seeing the balloon people IMG_0659 IMG_0660 and the ants IMG_0661 we said good bye to the seals IMG_0662 and headed home for the new year.
