After some quiet days in San Diego, I left on Tuesday to take the train to Los Angeles and go to the SIGGRAPH conference. Soon after I got to my hotel, Don Mitchell P8140001 called and we had a long chat in the hotel bar where they were not serving, so things were quiet. Then we headed over to the convention center where we met Pat Hanrahan. P8140002 I went off and encountered Greg Humphreys (Humper) P8140003 Wim Sweldems (who was about to get on the redeye back to NJ) P8140004 Emil Praun P8140005 and Peter Schroeder. P8140006 Then, Ben Shedd appeared P8140007 and someone took my picture. P8140008 After capturing Lee Markosian, P8140009 it was time to gather for the bowling event. Perry was there P8140010 as were Tom P8140011 and Szymon. P8140012 Allison Klein was trying on her shirt, P8140013 Georg Essl was looking for his P8140014 and Adam P8140015 insisted on taking pictures of me, front P8140016 back. P8140017 Tom Sanocki was welcoming Lena Petrovic P8140018 to Pixar as Wagner Correa watched. On the way back to the hotel, I ran into Robert McDermott P8140019 and his family. Because of the energy crisis, the restaurant that night was fairly dark and so it wasn't possible to capture the meal or even the outrageous bill on film.

Wednesday, the faculty gathered for lunch to discuss hardware purchases. Kai Li was there P8150020 as were Adam P8150021 Perry P8150022 Szymon P8150023 and Tom. P8150024 Dinner that night was from room service because all of the restaurants had lines that were too long.

On Thursday, I had lunch with Leo Guibas P8160025 and RObbin Forrest P8160026 who seemed dubious about someone taking pictures while eating. On the way back to the hotel, I saw this symbol of the oppression of the working man P8160027 by corporate America. P8160028

Thursday dinner was at Ciudad P8160029 which had this nice menu. P8160030 Ruth was jittery at first P8160031 but then calmed down. P8160032 We began with tapas P8160033 and chips with dip P8160034 accompanied by this fine beer. P8160035 The main course was empenadas and salad. P8170036

On Friday, I didn't bring the camera to the conference, which was a shame because I missed a number of good photo opportunities. On the train to Fullerton, I met a man named Glenn in the crowds and also didn't get his picture or a picture of the painting he was doing because the train was too crowded to get access to my camera. But, when I arrived in La Habra, it was no problem to get a picture of Dusty P8170037 and then a number of group pictures P8170038 P8170039 P8170040 as we prepared for the pilgrimage to El Cholo. Along the way we saw this warning sign P8170041 and then the international headquarters P8170042 for Stop Look, but nothing was more exciting than this P8170043 opportunity to actually use our shirts. We met the others P8170044 when we arrived and admired the menu P8170045 which listed 3 pages P8170046 P8170047 of food. Jane P8170048 and Sarah P8170049 were ready to enjoy their food but Janet P8170050 and Suzanne P8170051 were a little jumpy and Benjamin P8170052 was all over the place. Larry P8170053 looked good as did David P8170054 who also recorded the history of the place. P8170055 They brought chips P8170056 and sauce P8170057 while Benjamin P8170058 worked hard on his pictures and some drank margarittas P8170059 and others had sangria. P8170060 The sugar packets P8170061 inspired us to take this family picture. P8170062 Jane had the chicken enchillidas P8170063 Sarah had the vegetarian ones P8170064 that came with black beans and Janet had these quesadillas P8170065 P8170066 but only 1 serving. Larry had this tostada salad P8170067 Benjamin had this Mexican spaghetti P8170068 Suzanne had the taco P8170069 and this P8170070 is David's green corn tamale. After Janet modelled this mask P8170071 we knew it was time to call it a day.

Saturday began with a visit to international headquarters where there was a shortage of static cling letters P8180072 but the entry was well marked. P8180073 Inside we saw some memorabilia on signs P8180074 and a picture of our fearless leader P8180075 and his wife. We weren't sure if this sign P8180076 meant his brain was open or closed. The equipment there P8180077 P8180078 is impressive and they are EEO-compliant P8180079 at least as of 10 years ago or so. They also had some nice letters P8180080 and these handy signs P8180081 P8180082 if you wanted to go into one of these businesses and you could get the frames here to hang them. P8180083 The Christie's sign P8180084 had a good story to it, the forklift P8180085 was high powered and we were sure to punch the time clock P8180086 before leaving.

In the afternoon, we got passed by the other car P8180087 and so followed them for a while P8180088 until getting next to them P8180089 and so taking this picture P8180090 for no apparent reason. Eventually, we found a parking place here P8180091 right near this intersection P8180092 and passing this house P8180093 on the way to the beach where we met some others P8180094 and then saw the French group P8180095 in their matching shirts. We took the first free coffee picture P8180096 of Sarah and observed the 2 flying billboards. P8180097 P8180098 This sign P8180099 was charming being made of parts we'd seen earlier. So, it was time to check out the sites P8180100 a montage of piercing, tattooing, toe rings, ... stores. At muscle beach P8180101 we took this family picture as the workout P8180102 continued. Another sign P8180103 let us know where we were. And this sign P8180104 told us the rules. So, we took another free coffee picture P8180105 of Sarah. This man P8180106 had the first nice ink we saw. This led to yet another P8180107 free coffee picture and then this picture P8180108 of inspirational verse that made us thirsty, so we all drank water P8180109 and then came back to find Larry and Janet P8180110 who found the man with the man with P8180111 the top knot. Janet and Sarah thought we had to take the P8180112 picture of the lime house after which we saw this man P8180113 with wonderful ink.

Next it was time to go to the playground where Benjamin climbed P8180114 P8180115 while this guy P8180116 turned upside down and these people P8180117 boxed. This all inspired more climbing P8180118 P8180119 as people watched P8180120 and even more climbing P8180121 P8180122 as even more people watched. P8180123 The final climb P8180124 wasn't quite what these people P8180125 were doing. Her ink P8180126 had a good name on it. Then we saw the devil man (and stole a picture) P8180127 while this woman explained the evils of smoking P8180128 to Sarah and Jane. We really liked the idea of P8180129 NameOnRice.com P8180130 as the fog starting rolling in over the street scene P8180131 so that Jane and Larry decided to go here to get French fries P8180132 while the rest of us ignored his P8180133 suggestion that we buy sarongs. Instead, we admired P8180134 the skates sign and stole a picture P8180135 of the robots and then enjoyed P8180136 the vegetarian booth expounding the evils of Murder King and Unhappy Meals. This woman from back P8180137 and front P8180138 had wonderful hair. And, then the french fries P8180139 came looking quite greasy. We took this picture P8180140 during a pit stop at the world's dirtiest men's room, passed the sign P8180141 and view P8180142 of the canals, noted the arrival of new music P8180143 and took a picture of this Jeep Wrangler P8180144 for Lucy.

On the ride to Westwood, we passed this sign P8180145 for Mama's Pizza and this Radio Shack P8180146 before we got to Sanat Monica Boulevard. P8180147 Once in Westwood, we saw a theater playing Jane's favorite movie P8180148 and this storefront with 8 P8180149 (count them 8 8 8 8) of Stop Look's signs. We took the obligatory phone booth picture P8180150 when Janet made a phone call, We recorded this guy at Dominos P8180151 and noticed that no one was honking -- you decide. Then, there was the key picture P8180152 for the Stop Look web site. Dinner was at this restaurant P8180153 where the menu P8180154 P8180155 is barely readable due to low light. This made the pictures of Larry P8180156 and Sarah P8180157 a little blurry, but Suzanne P8180158 was very foggy from the beach except P8180159 when she looked down. Benjamin P8180160 seemed calm enough, Janet P8180161 didn't but Jane P8180162 did and who can forget when Elizabeth, the waitress, P8190163 P8190164 P8190165 P8190166 got up to sing. We made our way to Giorgio Armani P8190167 and then tried to get these pictures P8190168 P8190169 P8190170 of the largest limo we'd ever seen. We saw the Rugrats P8190171 and took this picture for Benjaminwhich brought us luck so that we could see this SUV limo P8190172 and another theater P8190173 showing Jane's favorite movie. Walter Mathau was there, P8190174 so was Tom Hanks, P8190175 and Nicolas Cage P8190176 was the latest to be added. Jane wanted this star P8190177 so that she could doctor is to shwo her name and we ended te day P8190178 with this famous resident of Princeton.
