The celebrations started a few days before. We didn't even invite Jane. But, first Dean Karlan (who is not a dean) IMG_0956 came by to visit. Then, I went to meet Michele IMG_0957 at Triumph where this was our waitress IMG_0958 and Ken IMG_0959 and Perry IMG_0960 were there from computer science as I finished with Kyle IMG_0961 from Chemical Engineering and the beer IMG_0962 caused the expected effect so that I could get this collection sign IMG_0963 before we took group pictures of those who came IMG_0964 IMG_0965 and those from computer science faculty IMG_0966 who didn't mind that I broke a glass IMG_0967 when trying to maneuver in a narrow place.

I had a faculty lunch IMG_0968 with IMG_0969 David Stern (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology), Erik Sorensen (Chemistry), Harriet Flower (Classics), Anthony Appiah (Philosophy and the Center for Human Values), Brigid Doherty (German), and Margaret Martonosi (Electrical Engineering) IMG_0970 and again.

Back at home, Kara IMG_0971 and Joel IMG_0972 appeared and posed for a family picture IMG_0973 before Joel and Ben IMG_0974 IMG_0975 IMG_0976 did a few tries at their twin brother act.

Meanwhile, the table was set IMG_0977 and Jane IMG_0978 had one IMG_0979 then two IMG_0980 balloons that delivered the important message. Josephine had made elegant vegetables IMG_0981 to go with the birthday cookie IMG_0982 and Jane was made blissful IMG_0983 by flowers IMG_0984 in every direction no to mention the meatballs IMG_0985 from Olive's. It took me two tries IMG_0986 IMG_0987 to get a proper self portrait because of the horn. Then, Jane modeled one IMG_0988 and the other IMG_0989 shirt from the Szabo's and the monopoly boxers front IMG_0990 and back IMG_0991 that dwelt on her concept of a mortgage.

There were grape leaves IMG_0992 and tortillas IMG_0993 but we kept thinking about dessert IMG_0994 as Suzanne IMG_0995 and Ben IMG_0996 also studied the chocolate IMG_0997 that caused us to put candles in the cookie IMG_0998 as Ben removed the struts IMG_0999 and seemed to suffer IMG_1000 while aiming to make a sculpture IMG_1001 from them. The candles came IMG_1002 as did the sparklers IMG_1003 and bit by bit IMG_1004 IMG_1005 IMG_1006 IMG_1007 things got lit while in the background IMG_1008 we thought about how to light even more IMG_1009 IMG_1010 and the first sparkler IMG_1011 which shone as the second IMG_1012 and third IMG_1013 and fourth IMG_1014 were lit. AS the candles burnt down IMG_1015 IMG_1016 Jane went at it IMG_1017 IMG_1018 until all were out IMG_1019 and we could cut the cake IMG_1020 hand out the slices IMG_1021 and begin to open the gifts starting with Ben's sea horse IMG_1022 Grandma's gift certificate IMG_1023 and some cards that barely photographed IMG_1024 IMG_1025 as Suzanne read IMG_1026 IMG_1027 and Ben did imitations of a monster IMG_1028 of a convict IMG_1029 and of a 10 year old IMG_1030 which inspired Jane to start with the clothes IMG_1031 IMG_1032 while Ben brought out his library book IMG_1033 which took better IMG_1034 away from the bright gold as Jane IMG_1035 IMG_1036 IMG_1037 tried on more clothes and we made more progress IMG_1038 on the birthday cookie and one last present was opened.
