After riding down I-5
to the airport in San Diego
and getting this picture
P1061458
instead of the killer picture telling me where cruise ships
are supposed to exit, I got on the plane to fly to San Jose. Once
in San Jose and then settled in Palo Alto, I ventured out to dinner with
the DeMillo family
P1071459
in a bit of a blur
P1071460
which was corrected when I joined their family
P1071461
at least for this picture.
The next morning, I had the first of 3 breakfasts at Hobbee's with Kai
Li
P1071462
who ordered this coffee cake
P1071463
to go with my BDBIT
P1071464
all nicely brought by Rey
P1071465
our waiter. After a long breakfast, I made my way past the
swimming pool at The Westin
P1071466
and past the falling roof
P1071467
of the building next door to get back to my room and get ready
to drive down the peninsula to my next meeting. I was early,
so I stopped at the Java Street Cafe
P1071468
where I had this simple meal
P1071469
and then captured this fine hand washing sign (Chineese translates as
"maintain public sanitation,
please wash hands often")
P1071470
for my collection. Next I drove across the street
to Network Appliances where they had the big logo sign
P1071471
and the smaller one
P1071472
to tell me that I was in the right place. Dan Warmenhoven brought his
lunch
P1071473
to accompany me with my lunch
P1071474
which was more liquid.
Back at the hotel, I ran into Jacobo and we drove out to Princeton-by-the-Sea
where we saw this picture
P1071475
for my collection of MezzaLuna restaurant signs and this close up
of the restaurant
P1071476
and this view of the Princeton Inn
P1071477
which is not in New Jersey. We drove down Harvard street
P1071478
past the intersection with Columbia
P1071479
and parked for a walk on the beach by this grafitti
P1071480
of little endorsement. Having no dog, we had no need for Mutt Mitts
P1071481
but appreciated that others were using them. The walk on the beach
and view out over the waves breaking near the rocks were so beautiful
that I forgot to take pictures which is just as well since the combination
of clouds and waves would have made for very white images. After a visit
to the facilities which are not being cleaned once per week for
10 employees (thank me for not providing the picture to prove it)
P1071482
we headed back up to Woodside for dinner at the Woodside Bakery and Cafe
P1071483
which is adjacent to Buck's. The menu offered great choices
P1071484
and they brought this nicely baked bread
P1071485
for which Jacobo made an oil and vinegar mixture
P1071486
to help us decide that Jacobo should have the calzone
P1071487
and I should have the pizza
P1071488
nicely delivered by this waitperson
P1071489
team. All this made Jacobo very happy
P1071490
but not nearly as happy as he would be after we went to Fry's
P1071491
and he got to show me all of my options for when I decide to finally
build my own machine part by part.
The next day (Tuesday) began with a walk to Hobbee's where we met this
man
P1081492
who needed directions and insisted on taking this picture of Marsha and me
P1081493
as we headed off for coffeecake. My coffee cake looked quite good
P1081494
as did this one
P1081495
which Marsha
P1081496
insisted was taller and she used her knife to prove it. After comparing
notes at breakfast, I was given my marching orders for the morning
and took my mints and directions
P1081497
along with this map
P1081498
and the car keys
P1081499
to get in the car
P1081500
with these plates
P1081501
and head off to see John Little
P1081502
at Portal for a long and serious discussion of what had happened in the
advisory committee meeting and directions that the department might
take next.
I left John's offices and headed back to Mountain View where the parking
lot offered me 2 choices.
P1081503
I saw Marsha in the distance
P1081504
and so knew to take this route
P1081505
into the building where I would be met by the keywords used in the
most recent searches
P1081506
their Google cooler
P1081507
full of natural fruit drinks and the ever present lava lamps
P1081508
that define the place. We began by going to lunch where the sous chef
P1081509
from exit 98 on the parkway had wonderful offerings
P1081510
for us to enjoy. On the way out of lunch, we ran into Larry Page
P1081511
one of the founders and the guy who built PageRank. Next we went to
a conference room with Eric
P1081512
Monika
P1081513
and Rob
P1081514
and traded business cards
P1081515
while discussing topics of mutual interest. Once back at the hotel,
I was met by the maid's cart
P1081516
at my room and so had to pass some time admiring this collection of vases
P1081517
and this fireplace
P1081518
and this tapestry that might have come from a John Nash movie
P1081519
in the lobby. Once back in the room, I was able to record my
collection of badges
P1081520
and a Snapple label from Portal because they had insisted on taking
back my badge while getting a short rest between events.
Next we headed to Los Altos to have dinner with the Goldman's. Sydney
was shy as she sat on Susan's lap and read the book that Marsha
had brought
P1081521
P1081522
P1081523
P1081524
as Marsha and Phil
P1081525
discussed things. Eventually, she got down from Susan's lap
P1081526
and played on the floor
P1081527
P1081528
stopping to pose for a few pictures
P1081529
P1081530
before we sat down to dinner
as prepared by Pauline. My meal differed somewhat from this
menu
P1081531
but my salad
P1081532
was excellent as was my main course of asparagus and couscous
which I forgot to photograph. The dessert
P1081533
brought me back to my senses so that I could capture a memory
of a great meal. As we finished dinner, I was able to record
Sydney from across the room as she engaged in the family passion
P1091534
P1091535
after which we headed back to our hotels after a happy meal ending
a productive day.
On Wednesday, we began at this Redwood Shores building
P1091536
where Avistar is headquartered. I had an animated discussion with
Jerry Burnett
P1091537
Alan Usas
P1091538
who gave us his business card
P1091543
and Marsha
P1091539
about the delivery of video over networks. Before leaving I
captured this picture of Jerry's beautiful object d'art
P1091540
made of glass from Murano and these 2 paintings
P1091541
P1091542
that adorned the lobby of the building.
The next stop was to have this lunch
P1091544
with Matthew
P1091545
from Nuance, a company specializing in speech understanding. After lunch,
we drove back to Mountain View to park across the street from Handspring
P1091546
at Pinnacle Systems
P1091547
where we met Tim Heidmann
P1091548
and took him
P1091549
to lunch at this restaurant
P1091550
with the marvelous display of hats.
After a short rest back at the hotels, we headed for Larkspur where
we were greeted with a plate of bruschetta
P1091551
as we met J. Michael Mahoney
P1091552
for dinner at Fabrizio
P1091553
where the menu
P1091554
offered wonderful suggestions. We began with this bottle of
P1091555
sparkling water. I began with the insalata mista
P1091556
and as I was taking this picture of the salmon
P1091557
that Mike had
P1091558
this waiter came by
P1091559
with my plate of gnocchi porcini
P1091560
after which he took this picture
P1091561
of the 3 of us. I finished my food photography with
this glimpse of the fish
P1091562
Marsha
P1091563
had. The dessert tray
P1101564
P1101565
required 2 pictures before we could agree to share the white chocolate mousse
P1101566
with 3 spoons. The meal ended with complimentary port
P1101567
after which I went back for some hand washing signs
P1101568
P1101569
for my collection. The restaurant wasn't done with us still
bringing us some complimentary cookies
P1101570
with which to finish our meal. In all, it was a good dinner!
