The next day I woke up and took the train to San Diego. Dansyl met me at the
Solana Beach station and insisted that we had to go to the Pancake House
P1041379
for lunch. The menu was charming
P1041380
with lots of options
P1041381
and the history of the place
P1041382
which caused Dansyl
P1041383
to spend a lot of time studying their options. As is the true test
of a pancake house, the syrup was served warm
P1041384
though it is hard to convey this in a photograph without heat sensing
web helper applications. Sylvia and I split this vegetable
omelette
P1041385
while Dan's plain omelette
P1041386
had already lost its puffiness but he had the pecan pancakes
P1041387
while we had the plain (actually buttermilk) ones.
P1041388
This is how Dan's plate looked
P1041389
before he had dug in too far. I wasn't able to get a picture of the
waiter because they were busy responding to their beepers so that
they could get the pancakes out before the air ran out of them. But I did get
this fine specimen for my collection of hand washing signs
P1041390
so it was not a totally lost experience.
After lunch, we drove to Carlsbad along this road
P1041391
and decided to ignore this sign
P1041392
so that we could go down to the beach
P1041393
and watch the birds fly
P1041394
as we observed the warning signs
P1041395
and watched the surfers
P1041396
out in the ocean. Sylvia decided to do some experimenting with
the camera to see if she could capture the perfect picture of
the squirrel's sign
P1041397
P1041398
P1041399
while we all observed the law
P1041400
and picked no vegetation. Along the sea wall, we ran into
this memorial
P1041401
to some unfortunate possible surfer who didn't read the signs. Then
it was time for a pit stop with Sylvia posing on her side
P1041402
while Dan had already gone in
P1041403
his. On the way back, we captured this wonderful picture
P1041404
of the birds at the surf and then noted that this van
P1041405
was a real steal for the right owner. Once back in La Jolla,
Sylvia captured this picture of Dan and me
P1041406
having this chat session
P1041407
with Jane on the other coast. For some reason, I forgot to record the
wonderful dinner meal, perhaps it was tiredness. After dinner, we started
a game of O Hell that ended the next morning with me as the victor
as the scoresheet shows
P1051408
and as you can see the deck
P1051409
was not rigged. So, here is a picture of the proud winner.
P1051410
The next event was lunch upstairs where you could order from the
left or right side of the menu
P1051411
and I had an omelette
P1051412
that could not compete with the meal of the day before while Rob had this
sandwich
P1051413
Linda had this meal with 2 different kinds of potatoes
P1051414
Anne had the filet
P1051415
Irv had the New Yorker
P1051416
Sylvia had the Caesar salad topped with salmon
P1051417
and Dan had his sandwich
P1051418
all well served by Aaron
P1051419
the waiter. For dessert, the specialty was this swan dish
P1051420
that didn't taste nearly as good as it looked though some chose to have cookies
P1051421
instead.
After lunch, we repaired to their apartment where Rob
P1051422
Anne
P1051423
Dansyl
P1051424
P1051425
and Irv
P1051426
posed for pictures and someone took this picture of Linda and me
P1051427
managing to capture us despite lighting problems. There was more food
including this plate of fresh fruit
P1051428
and this plate of dried fruit.
P1051429
The cookies Linda had brought
P1051430
looked better once they were unwrapped
P1051431
but nothing could compete with the chocolates from Australia,
P1051432
P1051433
not even the nuts and flakes
P1051434
the typically California fare. Despite all of the fingerprints,
we decided to subdivide the Autralian chocolate
P1051435
to make sure it tasted as good as it looked. It had a filling with a
liqueur taste and a hint of cherry. And, as is always the case, pictures
show a better taste than reality.
Despite the day of eating, we still had to have dinner. We observed that
we hadn't been outside all day and so decided to walk to the Chinese
restaurant around the corner and across the street. The menu
P1051436
had many fine offerings
P1051437
and after I got my beer
P1051438
Larry
P1051439
Janet
P1051440
Dan
P1051441
and Sylvia
P1051442
were ready to read the offerings so that we could choose a meal. We started
with Moo Shu vegetables
P1051443
which the waitress prepared at our table
P1051444
P1051445
to yield this first one
P1051446
while Dan took another picture
P1051447
of her work to get the sauce and a different angle on the meal. The rest
of the meal was the sizzling dish
P1051448
the specialty shrimp dish (that cost twice as much)
P1051449
General Ts'o chicken
P1051450
bean curd with excellent mushrooms
P1051451
and this accompanying hot sauce
P1051452
and two kinds of rice, fried
P1051453
and steamed.
P1051454
On the way back we recorded the flags on the apartment next door
P1051455
where the guy with the MS from Princeton lives and the name plate
P1051456
and mezzuzah
P1051457
on apartment 206. I was sad to get up the next morning and head to the
airport for the next leg of the trip. It had been a very nice visit.
