Dobkin Gespass Family Sabbatical -- A Day in Jerusalem
02.09.00
It was a beautiful Wednesday and the kids didn't have a full day of school.
So we decided that they could miss their half day of school and we would take
a family trip to Jerusalem.
Along the way we had to stop at the airport to pick up a box that had been sent to
David. This was a complex negotiation because most of the people didn't
speak English and there was a question about whether we would have to
pay VAT on the computer that had been sent or whether we could just leave
a deposit and get our money back when we left the country. Esti
of the IDC had talked to the people there and arranged for Idit to
help us. She agreed to let me pick up the machine without having to
leave any deposit (don't tell the bureaucracy) since I promised to take
the machine out of the country (I will). Here she is
IditAtCustoms
We proceeded on to Jerusalem after this long interruption and proceeded to
get lost in traffic. Eventually we pulled into a parking space to get our
bearings. David backed out without looking and hit this car. Fortunately
we were going slow enough that there was no damage. These pictures
are in case the owner wants to complain.

We proceeded on to the old city and parked our car near the Jaffa Gate.
Our first order of business was to find lunch which we did at a cafe

opposite the Citadel (aka David's Tower)

Next, we started walking through the Old City starting with the Arab Quarter
where we saw the market displaying all sorts of things

From here we went to the Church of the Holy Sepulchure
where the crucifixion happened.

Of course the security was strong, especially so because there was a visiting

A week in our lives here
02.11.00
Jane's hockey marathon happened on Friday February 11.
Benjamin and his classmates went to the opening ceremony
P2110001
Jane and Devon were both on the blue team
P2110002
P2110003
Jane played offense in her 6PM game. She scored 2 goals in the game we missed
earlier that day
P2110004
P2110005
At 6 they were still winning
P2110006
but when the game ended, the red team had gotten the lead.
02.13.00
Pam Haines came to visit. We decided to take an excursion to downtown
Herzalia (away from the beach) to look for a good falafel.
Along the way, we had to take the obligatory phone booth picture
P2130007
After the falafels, we needed to get Benjamin candy to bring to his
class' Valentine's Day party.
We went here
P2130010
and here is a picture of the shoppers in the store
P2130008
P2130009
02.19.00
The next weekend we decided to take a trip to Ashkelon. This is an old town
about an hour south of here with a long history back to Biblical times.
P2190028
We experimented a lot to get a good image of this sign as you can see
P2190029
P2190030
P2190031
We began with a walk on the beach which was beautiful
P2190013
and also had some wonderful sculptures
P2190011
P2190012
The beach had some wonderful ruins of old crusader era walls
P2190014
P2190015
P2190016
and was beautiful to walk along though at times, you had to climb thru
the rocks
P2190017
P2190018
Then Benjamin and David found a turtle shell
P2190019
while Suzanne and Jane were finding sea shells
P2190020
When we climbed off the beach, we saw a ruin of the original
Crusader walls
P2190021
Then, it was time for lunch
P2190027
as everyone was hungry
P2190022
P2190023
P2190024
P2190026
After this, we decided to go to another part of the National Park
P2190025
and see the preserved ruins.
We saw columns
P2190034
P2190035
walls
P2190032
P2190033
P2190038
and statues.

February 20, 2000 -- Modi'in and Jerusalem
02.20.00
We started this day by picking up Suzanne
P2200005
who was looking at fancy Persian rugs
P2200001
P2200002
while participating in the tea ritual
P2200006
The rest of us didn't seem able to share her enthusiasm
P2200003
P2200004
though we were happy to take the obligatory phone booth pictures
P2200007
P2200008
We first drove to Modi'in. This is where the Maccabees are supposedly
buried and there are also lots of sights here where trees have been planted
by foreigners. But we stopped there to have lunch
P2200009
P2200010
P2200011
P2200012
P2200013
Having had food and drink
P2200014
we were ready to look for the graves.
We found this monolith which maybe is the site of the graves
P2200015
P2200016
but couldn't read the Hebrew
P2200017
P2200018
to know what it was we were looking at.
Next we followed the signs to the Hasmonian Village
P2200019
which was unfortunately closed
P2200020
when we got to it.
So, we headed on to Jerusalem. Eventually we had dinner
P2200021
in a pizza parlor in the Jewish Quarter.
As we were leaving, we decided to see what the Western Wall
P2200022
P2200024
P2200025
and Dome of the Rock
P2200023
looked like in the dark.
On the way out of the Jewish Quarter, we took the obligtory phone booth picture
P2200026
As we passed the citadel (tower of David) we noticed that it was opened for
a night time exhbition and lighting. The view of the Dome of The Rock
was impressive even though the camera couldn't capture it

Acco and Rosh Hanikrah
02.26.00
February 26 was a pretty Saturday and we had decided to do an excursion
to the Western Galilee with the Tals.
Since
Leigh
P2260001
had slept over with Jane
P2260002
in our library
P2260003
we first left her off in Caeserea.
P2260004
Then we continued on to Ayellet's house
P2260005
P2260006
We followed them
P2260007
to Akko (Acco, Acre).
P2260008
After we had parked the car
P2260018
P2260019
and met a local merchant
P2260015
who was getting ready to go to Saint Louis, Missouri, we
went to the main building
P2260009
where we explored the excavations. Jane got to sit in the king's chair
P2260010
P2260011
and we exited thru the Arab market
P2260014
where fish were today's specialty
P2260012
P2260013
Then we got ready for lunch
P2260017
while this lady walked into our lives
P2260016
After lunch, we drove on to Rosh Hanikrah
P2260027
P2260034
which is very near the border with Lebanon
P2260033
P2260035
After dealing with nature
P2260022
we decided to take the cable car
P2260026
down to explore the caves.
P2260023
When we came back up
P2260020
P2260021
we were all getting tired
P2260024
P2260025
and the day was progressing
P2260029
P2260032
and the sun was going down
P2260028
P2260030
P2260031
so we decided to call it a day.
../../Sabbat/Pics/02.27.00KefarHabbad/
Kefar Chabad
02.27.00
The embassy was sponsoring a tour to Kefar Chabbad which is a Chabad
(Lebavitcher) village not far from here. So, we decided to join them.
Our guide was Medel
P2270001
who took us to the matzah factory
P2270002
where we could watch the men work
P2270003
P2270004
and then we saw the matzahs being baked
P2270006
P2270007
P2270008
and got to taste them
P2270005
Later we saw a room in their day care center
P2270009
and the building they built to look like the Rebbe's house in Brooklyn
P2270010
P2270011
../../Sabbat/Pics/02.29.00DavidsBirthday/
Leap Year in Old Jaffa
02.29.00
It was my birthday, so I decided to take the day off and go with Suzanne
to the old section of Jaffa
P2290001
Everyone who is anyone has spent some time there
P2290005
P2290006
P2290007
P2290008
P2290009
including Andromeda
P2290010
who still lives in the harbor
P2290004
and still more people and legends
P2290011
P2290012
including also Napoleon
P2290013
who was nice enough to pose with Suzanne
P2290003
and a curse.
P2290014
Maybe they came for the wonderful view of Tel Aviv
P2290002
or to see the Turkish clock tower
P2290015
or to go to the bakery
P2290016
where people line up 5 deep to get take away pastries and lunch.
P2290018
Let's hope that they don't go there for the
P2290017
Flea Market which isn't very good.
Later, we went out for a family dinner to celebrate my birthday.
Everyone looked good
P2290019
P2290020
P2290022
You can hardly tell that Benjamin's
P2290021
clothes were all wet
because I
P2290023
P2290024
managed to spill lemonade all over him.
Benjamin insisted that we tell the waiter
P2290027
that it was my birthday. He was kind enough
to put sparklers on our desserts
P2290025
and to take a group photo.
P2290026
And now I am a year (or is it 4 years?) older.
../../Sabbat/Pics/03.05.00Latrum/
A visit to Latrun -- Tanks R Us
03.05.00
Benjamin got a haircut today
P3050001
so we decided to celebrate by going to Latrun
P3050019
Despite the construction here
P3050002
there are still lots of tanks
P3050004
P3050005
P3050009
and you can sit on them
P3050010
P3050011
P3050012

P3050003
P3050006
P3050007

P3050015
P3050016
P3050017
P3050018
P3050025
Of course, some are unreachable
P3050008
and some are represented as sculpture
P3050021
These babies can do a lot of damage
P3050020
while not suffering much damage themselves
P3050027
You can also recycle their parts to make signs
P3050024
There is a monument to all the countries who helped to fight
the Nazis
P3050022
P3050023
and a grove of olive trees
P3050026
to show the alternative.
Of course, we took the obligatory phone booth pictures
P3050028
P3050029
and on the way home, we made a collage of pictures of the
"Ha'am em Ha'Golan'' art installation some with cars

P3050033
and some without

P3110003
P3110009
P3110010
At times it got scary
P3110008
P3110013
because it was narrow and windy.

P3110007
and we could even see people's laundry
P3110001
and a wonderful view of the Dome of the Rock
P3110004

../../Sabbat/Pics/03.19-20.00EilatTrip2/
A trip to EIlat -- Part 2, Km marker 101 and Eilat
03.19.00
On the way south, we went through some severe desert with nothing to see.
At the 101 kilometer marker we ran into a tacky rest stop.
P3190002
In this store,
P3190003
I bought this paperweight
P3190004
The artistic effort made me want to experiment further
P3190001
Then we took the obligatory phonebooth picture
P3190005
and left.
03.20.00
The next day, we got up early and went to the aquarium
P3200006
fully dressed
P3200007
Our first stop was the yellow submarine
P3200008
After the obligatory security check
P3200009
we all climbed aboard
P3200010
P3200011
P3200012
I discovered that you don't get very good pictures shooting through the portholes of

P3200015
P3200016
P3200017

P3200022
P3200023
P3200024
Then we came above board and took a picture of Jordan

P3200026
P3200027
Next we took mermaid and merman pictures
P3200028
P3200029
P3200031
and the obligatory phone booth picture
P3200030
For a break, we came back and took a dip
in the hotel pool
P3200032
P3200033
P3200034
before it was time to go for our camel rides
P3200035
The camels looked tame enough
P3200036
as we got ready to board
P3200037
P3200038
Then Suzanne waited for Golda (her camel) to rise
P3200039
which she did
P3200040
and so did Face for Jan
P3200041
and Mona for Benjamin and I
P3200042
As we rode on
P3200043
we all became more comfortable. We got to the top of the mountain,
we stopped for a break

Hadera and Nazareth -- Following the pope
03.24.00
To prepare for our visit to Nazareth, we had a lovely dinner with Eliezer and
his family on Shabbat evening
P3240002
P3240001
Aharon
P3240003
and Nira
P3240004
were also there. The kids enjoyed playing
P3240005
P3240007
before the group photo
P3240006
03.25.00
This all put us in a good mood for our pilgrimage to
P3250008
P3250009
As you can see, everyone
P3250010
P3250011
P3250012
was happy because they didn't realize we were about to have
o deal with a flat tire
too hard to take pictures .
Then it was on to Megiddo
where Sarah took these flower pictures
P3250013
P3250014
P3250015
followed by the obligatory phone booth pictures
P3250016
P3250017
From there we went to Nazareth where the crowds
P3250018
were not cheering for us but from him
P3250019
So we went to this place
P3250020
for lunch and met this reporter
P3250021
who amused us for awhile.
We wanted to go to this church
P3250022
but they were in
P3250023
P3250024
and we were out.

Jane on Broadway-- In The Spotlight <\TITLE>

As part of her In the Spotlight <\i> course, Jane spent the
quarter preparing to do a musical show
P3280002
which was so big that even the superintendent
P3280001
came. The ambassador was there but his seconds kept us from
getting a good picture.
Jane was in the opening number
P3280003
She looked good here but the person in front of us looked even better
P3280004
She got very tall in one piece
P3280005
but came back well for the flower song
P3280006
not to mention the finale
P3280007
P3280008
We're all sorry that Jane is taking printing next quarter -- we'll

was nice enough to sell us batteries for 25 shekels so that we could
resume our journey
P4010020
P4010021
and take the obligatory phone booth picture
P4010022
Suzanne and Yossi made the necessary pit stop
P4010023
so that we could stop staring at the statue
P4010024
and buy some T shirts
P4010025
in stores like this one
P4010026
Our next stop was at Muhraka,
P4010027

Benjamin's Sixth Birthday <\TITLE>

We were all excited to celebrate Benjamin's sixth birthday today.
The celebration began in his classroom.
First we observed what the date was
P4040003
Then everyone gathered around to get ready for the celebration
P4040002
In fact, Miss Linda got too close
P4040001
Miss Patty called for quiet and got Benjamin on her lap
P4040004
to put on the birthday hat
P4040005
As the tension mounted
P4040006
out came the birthday cake
P4040007
P4040008
As everyone watched
P4040009
out went the candles
P4040010
P4040011
Next we went outside to cut the cake and have the feast
P4040012
P4040013
Miss Patty
P4040014
decided to take some pictures of us
P4040015
P4040016
P4040017
and we took one of her with Benjamin
P4040018
Then there was a magic show that even brought out the superintendent's wife
in her role as guidance counselor
P4040019

P4040034
P4040035
P4040036
P4040037
This got better as the first present was opened

and we all sang (Ha'om Yom Huleddet)

P4150001
P4150002
P4150003
Arala and Norma met
P4150004
as did Milt and Anat
P4150009
Eliezer and Anat were there
P4150005
The Yaharon children were there
P4150006
as were Ofer and his daughter.
P4150007
Jane
P4150008
was nice enough to be the cameraman's assistant.
Then we sat down for dinner with Suzanne, Arala, and Eliezer at
the head
P4150010
P4150011
of the long table
P4150012
Sarah enjoyed her meal
P4150013
As the meal was winding down, Chaim the magician arrived. He began

and with us
P4150059

A day in Safed
04.16.00
After a lot of maneuvering around the hills of Safed,
P4160001
we finally got to a place where the view was fabulous
P4160002
P4160003
and sat down to lunch.
Jane did an excellent job of taking the individual photos

P4160008
P4160009
including Benjamin imitating Chaim the magician

P4160010
We copied our neighbors and took a picture of the city
reflected in the bank window
P4160011
We then started to explore the artist area
leaving some of our group to try the ice cream
P4160012
We particularly liked the work in this shop
P4160013
where the proprietor
P4160014
was very sweet about explaining kabalistic thought to us.
Next, we went to the old part of the city where they
were more serious about dress code
P4160015
than we were
P4160016

and then made our way to the memorial to Israeli soldiers who
fell in the Golan
P4170024
P4170025
and admired the metal sculptures made from old tank parts
P4170026
Next, we gave the camera to Suzanne for a montage of pictures
showing the view of Israel from the heights of the Golan
P4170027
P4170028
P4170029
She also captured Jane and Benjamin as they gathered soil that might

Suzanne and Benjamin decided to climb in and avoid any bombs that might drop
P4170035
P4170036
We ended our visit by buying Sarah her birthday present
P4170022
from this very kind gentleman
P4170037
who moved her from the Sinai when it was given back to Egypt and may
soon have to move from the Golan once it is given back to Syria.
Next we went to the town of Qatrzin (capital of the Golan) which
is famous for providing the water
P4170039
P4170040
and wine of Israel
P4170038
Unfortunately they haven't yet learned to turn one into the other.

Cairo -- Citadel, Pyramids, Pharonic Village
04.21.00
This was the first day of our trip to Egypt. We had arrived late
last night and been met
by our tour guide who told us to be ready for touring at
9 this morning. After eating
breakfast and hoping that no evil bacteria would enter our
system, we went to see the
citadel and mosque built by Mohammed Ali (not the boxer)
200 years ago. This was
meant to give us some perspective on the country's
history and an introduction to Islam.
As a precursor to later events, we saw the area that
was quarried for the pyramids (way
back when)
P4210001
Next we went to the citadel
P4210002
where our guide
P4210003
told us what we would see.
When we entered
P4210004
Sarah and Jane were transformed
P4210005
into respectable types.
The inside was spectacular
P4210006
P4210007
and this gentleman was polite enough to clean the lights for us
P4210008
The views of Cairo were spectacular
P4210010
P4210011
You could see the pyramids in the background
P4210009
and the guide took a picture of us suitable for framing
P4210012
On the way to the pyramids, they pulled the tour guide
hustle and brought us to the
papyrus store where these gentlemen
P4210013
were happy to separate us from our money.
Next it was on to the pyramids
P4210014
P4210028
P4210033
where we saw camels
P4210015
P4210029
had our picture taken
P4210016
saw the rocks they were made from
P4210017
P4210019
P4210020
P4210031
stood and looked at the situation
P4210018
P4210021
P4210022
P4210024
P4210030
also from the side
P4210023
We also stole a picture of a camel
P4210025
and got some pictures taken of us
P4210026
P4210027
P4210034
P4210035
We even took a picture of the guards
P4210032
Our next stop was at the
P4210036
Sphinx which sits nicely by the pyramids standing guard
P4210037
P4210038
P4210039
P4210040
and is equally impressive from the side
P4210041
P4210042
Our next stop was lunch where everyone was a little tired
P4210043
P4210044
P4210045
P4210046
P4210047
but the view was unbeatable
P4210048
After lunch, our next pictures were taken at the Pharoah Village which sits on the Nile
P4210049
and has a web site
P4210050
We went past the papyrus
P4210051
and a lot of statues
P4210052
P4210053
P4210054
P4210055
including Ramses 2
P4210056
who adopted Moses after he set sail in a basket into a scene like this one
P4210057
and the court jester
P4210058
We also saw farming scenes
P4210059
P4210060
P4210061
P4210063
P4210066
some hieroglyphics
P4210062
some boat building
P4210064
statue making
P4210065
Next we entered a replica of King Tut's tomb
P4210067
and talked to the high priest
P4210068
We took a picture of the papyrus of the seasons we had bought earlier
P4210069
a men's room
P4210070
ourselves on a bridge over the Nile
P4210072
and the obligatory phone booth pictures

Cruising the Nile
04.23.00
After we finished our tour of Luxor, we managed to miss the boat
heading south. Eventually we got back to the boat and started
a very serene, very beautiful cruise.
Sarah took these pictures on
P4230001
and off
P4230002
P4230003
P4230004
P4230005
P4230006
P4230007
P4230008
P4230009
the side of the boat.
While we were waiting to get
through the locks at Esne, we noticed boats
approaching other cruise boats
P4230010
and sure enough, a few moments later, this
gentleman started to show his wares to our boat.
P4230011
P4230012
If you expressed interest, he tossed the item up to the boat
and started to negotiate prices. No one bought anything so
we didn't learn how the money gets back to him.
The tablecloth got negotiated down to $10 (normally $20,
for you $10) with 12 napkins but still it had no takers.
04.24.00
The next day we woke up still waiting for the locks and
with these salespeople by our boat
P4240001
P4240002
As I'm sure you know, this last picture is of
Akaman Akd el Naky
who works at
A Mape Mepoaplk of Egypt
Azbut el Hazan St. 15
Kana Esna, EGYPT.
When you talk to him, identify yourself as
a friend of Ali Baba. You'll get a good price.
We also took a few more pictures of the crew with our family
P4240022
P4240050
and of ourselves in various incarnations including
Suzanne reading

P4240067
We had been here already for 24 hours looking at the entrance
to the locks
P4240023
when a boat came out
P4240024
and we got ready to go in
P4240025
P4240026
so that we could stop looking at our shadows
P4240027
We went in and looked back at the boats we had waited with
P4240028
and looked forward to the area we'd cross
P4240029
This boat came with us
P4240030
getting closer
P4240031
and closer
P4240032
Then they raised the water level
P4240033
and on we went

and behind the boat
P4240072
is so good that you have to take that extra picture.
Unfortunately, no camera can capture the whole ambiance of
the ride, the scenery, the sense of total relaxation, ...
The best we can do is to present many many views of the sunset
in progress

details of our return from the temple are recorded
elsewhere (as part of the trip rather than part of the
boat ride since we were technically not on the ship at the
time). Nonetheless, we encourage the serious viewer to find them
as they make an interesting story.

Luxor -- the town and the East Shore Temples
04.22.00
We woke up very early today (430 AM our time) to get to our flight from Cairo to Luxor.
Once we got here, we went for a walk around town where we discovered both
old
P4220001
P4220002
and new
P4220003
P4220137
styles of writing. We apologize here gentle viewer, for the large
number of hieroglyphics you will see on these pages. There is no
apology for the road signs of Egypt.
This being Egypt, we saw a lot of people practicing perfect posture
P4220004
Next we stopped at a shop where the proprietor gave us a warm welcome
because he (and every other shop keeper in the country) loves Americans
P4220005
He even offered to give me 10,000 camels for my wife.
Then there were the obligatory phone booth pictures
P4220006
P4220007
While in the market
P4220009
we noticed this obelisk
P4220008
in one direction
and this McDonald's
P4220010
in the other -- signs of the way things are here.
We also met Mohammed (and his friend)
P4220011
and promised that if
we took a horse and carriage ride, we would hire him.
In the afternoon, we went to the temples at Luxor.
We started with
P4220012
the Karnak Temple
P4220013
P4220017
P4220018
P4220019
which is guarded by a row of sphinxes
P4220014
P4220015
which were modified by Ramses 2 to show his head.
P4220016
P4220020
This was the scene as we entered the temple
P4220021
P4220022
and saw our first hieroglyphics
P4220023
and the ramps that supported the adding of layers to the walls
P4220024
Next we saw the statues of Ramses
P4220025
guarding the entry
P4220026
and with his favorite wife Nefertari
P4220027
below.
Then more hieroglyphics
P4220028
after which we went to see the 162 columns that held
up the temple.
Of course many of these had hieroglyphics on them

gentle viewer -- we apologize for having taken quite so many photos
but the scenery was unbelievable and everyone had to take their favorite few
photos. Even these photos, of which we are quite proud, do not capture the grandeur
of the place as we saw it
From here, we saw the obelisks
P4220057
P4220060
P4220061
P4220062
P4220065
P4220066

P4220068
P4220070
one of which was on its side
and the famous beetle (walk around 7 times and your wish comes
true)
P4220063
but we couldn't escape more pictures of hieroglyphics
P4220058
P4220059
until we took a picture of Suzanne
P4220064
taking this picture
P4220069
Then it was time to go to the temple of Luxor
where we were again greeted by Ramses 2
P4220071
P4220072
P4220073
P4220074
P4220075
P4220076
P4220077
P4220078
sometimes with obelisks, sometimes with the dreaded hieroglyphics and
sometimes with just his head on.
From here, we entered and saw the mosque that had been built on the site
P4220079
P4220086
then more Ramses
P4220080
P4220081
P4220082
P4220083
more hieroglyphics
P4220084
P4220085

P4220094
P4220096
and a painting from the Christian times

followed (of course) by more hieroglyphics

P4220102
P4220103
P4220104
one of which depicts Alexander the Great's attempts
to get his wife fertile with offers to the Egyptian gods.
We ended by having Jane do a montage of photos showing our path out.
As you'd expect there are columns and statues and hieroglyphics.
She also captured lots of pieces of the temple waiting to be classified
and assembled -- the world's largest jigsaw puzzle

Luxor -- the East Shore Tombs
04.23.00
Our day began when this gentleman
P4230001
knocked at our door at 6AM so that we could get
to breakfast and be ready to leave at 7AM for sightseeing.
We began by going to see the statues
guarding the burial temple of Amen-Oifs III -- the
co-called colossi of Memnon
P4230002
P4230003
P4230004
P4230005
which were quite impressive.
Next we went to the Kingdom of the Gods.
Getting there was quite a challenge. When your bus
stops you have to deal with peddlers
P4230006
next you go through the snack bar
P4230015
and take a tram
P4230014
to reach the ticket booth
P4230013
after which you walk through the street vendors
P4230016
to get to the path to the tombs.
Then you are in this remarkable setting
P4230010
P4230011
where you can walk up a long path
P4230009
and stop at tombs
P4230008
which may be entered
P4230007
P4230012
but there is no photography inside.
But, be careful as you leave
P4230017
and watch out for the guards
P4230018
Next we stopped at an alabaster factory
P4230019
where they did a demonstration of the
process
P4230020
and showed someone pounding the material
P4230021
and another person sawing
P4230022
All of this was to hustle our money and give a commission
to the tour guide.
Our next stop was at the Temple of Hatshephust, one
of the queens.
P4230023
P4230024
We saw the monumental tree stump
P4230025
P4230026
and then her statues
P4230027
and some beautiful hieroglyphics
P4230028
P4230029
after which we were told that her
statue (meant to look like Ramses II)
had some feminine features ( you be the judge )
P4230030
We also took a picture of the view she gets
P4230031
and the soon to be obligatory photo of Suzanne taking a photo
P4230032
On the way out, we saw construction workers preparing to add to the temple
P4230033
P4230034
Our final stop was at the Valley of the Queens
where Jane did her Nefertari imitation
P4230035
we waited to go into a tomb
P4230036
and took an obligatory phone booth picture
P4230037
../../Sabbat/Pics/04.24.00Esna/
The Temple at Esna
04.24.00
We were stuck at the Esna dam which was closed
for maintenance from 9 to 1, so they arranged
alternative transportation for us to
get to the temple
P4240003
( they let me drive the carriage back so it was quite an adventure ).
When we arrived, there was the usual trip through the souk
P4240004
The temple is very impressive
P4240005
for its walls
P4240006
P4240007
P4240008
P4240011
P4240013
P4240014
which are covered with hieroglyphics that were Greek imitations of
the Egyptian originals. The Greeks led by Alexander the Great conquered
Egypt by imitating their religion in ways like this.
Also impressive were the columns which showed the Greco-Roman style
P4240010
P4240020
and the ceiling which among other things showed the signs of the
Zodiac
P4240009
P4240021
A minaret in the background
P4240012
provides a wonderful contrast to the temple.
While at the temple, we took the almost obligatory picture
of Suzanne taking a picture of the rest of us
P4240015
had Napoleon, our tour guide, take a picture of all of us
P4240016
P4240017
P4240018
but we forgot to tell him that the camera doesn't advance film and so got 3
and took a picture of Napoleon with the children.

The Temple at Edfu
04.25.00
This was an unusual temple because it is on the
West Bank which is usually reserved for tombs (sunset) with
the East Bank used for temples.
It was buried in sand for thousands of years and so
is very well preserved.
The boat had arrived at the dock during the night and
we headed out early in the morning past the picture of Mubarak
P4250001
took the obligatory phone booth pictures
P4250002
P4250003
and reached the bazaar
P4250004
outside the temple.

and to the side you could see further ruins still
being developed
P4250049
P4250050
They were
set against the neighboring houses
P4250006
and well guarded
P4250018

high standards
P4250019

P4250020

This temple was particularly interesting because it was built in the Greek/Roman period
and many of the images above tell stories relating to Cleopatra VII, the daughter of
Ptolemey III. She is the Cleopatra of history. Our guide did a wonderful
job of relating the engravings to the cartouches that tell the stories.
We also saw engravings here, as in other places, documenting the merger of upper and
lower Egypts and the gods who were involved in the merger and in protecting it.
Our guide also showed us 2 other things of note.

P4250050
is an indentation used to join stones. When temples have
been dismantled in order to be moved, they have found pieces of wood and bronze
in these indentations.
And, this
P4250049
was the chamber of holies where the priests went to imitate the gods
when greeting the king.
Our last stop at the site was at an old Roman statue
P4250049
that had been built at the site in a later period.
On the way back we took a few pictures from different angles
of the temple at sunset
P4250057
P4250061
P4250063
We were a few minutes late getting back to the ship
P4250064
so our neighbors pulled up their plank and sailed away
leaving a small gap
P4250065
to be bridged. Eventually the Helios got its bridge up
P4250066
and we could proceed
P4250067
Unfortunately the whole operation took about half an hour and
so we got to Aswan that much later.

Some highlights of Aswan
04.26.00
We had only 4 hours in which to see all of Aswan before having
to head to the airport to catch a flight back to Cairo so we
focused on 3 activities.
We started with the Temple of Philae.
This temple is most interesting because it was moved from Philae Island
to a new location after the construction of the first Aswan dam
had submerged the island (and so the temple) for at least half of each year.
When you see the size of the temple, it's remarkable that it could have
been moved.
To get to it, we took a motorboat to the island it is on.
On the way, we recorded everyone's looks
P4260011
P4260012
P4260014
P4260016
P4260017
P4260021
including those of our boat driver

where we had come from
P4260013
P4260015
and where we were going
P4260018
P4260019
P4260020
We also enlisted Benjamin as our tour guide at one point.
P4260023
Once on the island, we saw the temple in its granduer
P4260024
including an engraving that had been chiseled out
P4260025
P4260026
P4260027
The columns were once again of varied styles
P4260035
P4260032
P4260028
P4260036
P4260038
P4260039
including this one where the ankh and arrow were explained

The engravings were impressive once again
P4260033
P4260034
P4260031
P4260037
P4260044
and our guide worked our way through a few more hieroglyphics
P4260029
P4260030
and we took a ceiling picture
P4260040
We also saw the largest blocks to be moved
P4260041
P4260042
The ride back gave us a chance for a last view of the temple
P4260046
and the old Aswan Dam
P4260045
Back on the shore we took the obligatory picture of the
phone booth that had been taken over by the spice salesman
P4260047
Next it was on to the new Aswan Dam where we took a picture of the
river flowing north
P4260048
and a lot of pictures of people in our group from various angles
P4260049

Back in Cairo
04.27.00
For our last day in Cairo, we went to the Egyptian Museum which was beautiful
but camera avers and then to Saqqara (aka Sakara) which has some of the oldest
tombs and the step pyramids.
These were pictures on the wall inside one of the graves
P4270001
P4270002
The color is quite well preserved after almost 5000 years.
They also have phone booths
P4270003
though I think these are probably a recent addition.
The step pyramid is quite a site
P4270004
P4270009
and made hills like this one
P4270005
take on a new meaning.
Walking along the paths in the old city of the dead
P4270006
was quite an experience because the crowds were small compared
to the area of the city. Of course, it was quite hot.
This guard
P4270007
asked me to take his picture and then demanded baksheesh.
those of you viewing this should contribute to the
pound I had to pay him .
In the distance, across desert you could see the pyramids at Giza
P4270008
We took a picture of one of the burial pits
P4270010
but it was hard to see down 100 feet to the bottom.
Then, the outside of the tombs
P4270011
and the wall of cobras
P4270012
left us ready to drive to Memphis which we could see from a distance
P4270013
P4270014
P4270015
In Memphis, the main attraction is the gigantic status of Ramses II.
Here are his head,
P4270016
P4270021
P4270022
P4270026
P4270027
P4270028
his belt cartouche,
P4270017
P4270024
his chest engraving,
P4270018
his good arm,
P4270019
(notice the strong muscle)
P4270033
his shoulder,
P4270020
his bad leg,
P4270025
his ear
P4270034
the engraving of his wife in his leg
P4270032
and his entire length
P4270031
We took this picture towards Saqqara
P4270029
and this in the outer yard
P4270030
and these of the alabaster pyramid
P4270035
P4270036
Our last stop in Egypt was at Khan al Khalili, the bazaar (souk)
where these gentlemen
P4270037
P4270038
sold us some elegant T shirts and offered not enough camels for
my wife or children.
This man seemed to characterize our final warm feeling
P4270040
as Suzanne left her last shopping excursion
P4270041
and this guy said goodbye
P4270039
At the airport, we took the obligatory phone booth pictures
P4270042
P4270043
where we were accused to taking pictures for phone
and even one of a mail box

A quiet week at home
05.02.00
We had been traveling for a while and it
was time to settle back into our normal lives here.
Suzanne and Benjamin made a trip to Tel Aviv to
get Benjamin a violin rental.
P5020003
Jane's flute came
back from the repairman and they could make music together
P5020001
P5020002
05.04.00
Later in the week (on Thursday), Seth Teller
P5040003
came to visit.
Sarah
P5040002
and Jane
P5040001
got haircuts.
The rest of us
P5040004
P5040005
P5040006
P5040007
tagged along for an excellent dinner
P5040012
During the meal, Jane decided to experiment with her
attempts at taking self portraits that realize the

A trip to New Jerusalem -- Yad Va'shem, Lunch and Ben Yehuda Street
05.07.00
We went to see Yad Va'shem.
It is a very somber place but we paused to take a picture of
Benjamin
P5070001
together with his sisters
P5070004
and then took pictures of Sarah and Jane enjoying the view
P5070002
P5070003
Afterwards, we drove downtown and had lunch but not at this place
P5070005
Jane took the family pictures
P5070006
P5070007
P5070008
but Suzanne sneezed
P5070009
Jane's self portraits are improving
P5070010
but they are still not as good as pictures of her and Sarah together
P5070011
The food was good as you can see from 11 of the 12 salads
P5070012
No one wanted to see the beets anyways.
After lunch, we took the obligatory phone booth pictures
P5070013
P5070018
and the pictures of great American icons overseas
P5070014
P5070015
P5070016
P5070017
We even went to Hillel 5 to taste the last one.
Finally, on the way to the car, Sarah took a picture of this
flower
P5070019
and David took a picture of this house
P5070028
where the person who gave his name to many streets here once spent time.

Independence Day and Benjamin's Class Show
05.10.00
This was the week of Israeli Independence Day. We went to the
kibbutz (Ein Ha Horesh) to celebrate with Ofer and Haviva.
This was 52 years for Israel
P5100040
nd 70 years for the kibbutz
P5100041
thanks to the sign that Ofer made.
Haviva also made a beautiful sign
P5100042
celebrating the history of Israel n pictures.
Yuval and Benjamin
P5100043
had a wonderful time running around the picnic.
Before leaving, we got to see the cows being milked
P5100044
05.11.00
Benjamin's class had been practicing for weeks so we
expected a great show. He even got a haircut and put on
his AIS millenium shirt
P5110050
got to his class
P5110045
and lined up with the other kids
P5110046
The show was a grand spectacle
P5110047
P5110048
P5110049
Unfortunately, it was so grand that you can't see Benjamin (star of the show)
in any of the pictures.
../../Sabbat/Pics/05.14.00-05.20.00WeekinOurLives/
May 14-20 a Week in our lives
05.14.00
It was a fairly standard week.
We began by going to Tel Aviv and buying a falafel from this man
P5140001
which kept me awake during the night but cleaned my internal plumbing.
Next we went to this street market
P5140002
and bought a Pokemon shirt (b'Evrit) for Benjamin. Stay tuned and we'll
have him model it in a later edition of this journal.
05.18.00
On Thursday, we were invited
P5180004
to the ambassador's house. So David dug out his tie
P5180003
and he and Suzanne dressed to the nines
P5180005
P5180006
for this once in a lifetime event.
05.20.00
This would surely have been the high point of our week except that
we went channel surfing on Saturday night and found a Russian
version of So you want to be a Millionaire .
P5200010
We had forgotten our previous experiments
!!! web page link here
and so spent some time doing television photography with the flash
P5200007
P5200008
P5200009
P5200011
Eventually we got in gear and were able to record

P5200013
followed by question with correct answer
P5200014
followed by next question
P5200015
The answer to this question was wrong
sending the contestant home with 32,000 rubles
P5200016
and necessitating a new question
P5200017
to which 10 contestants came up with an answer

After a Saturday night spent watching a quiz show in a language you
don't understand, there may be no encore we can find.

Who wants to be a millionaire
05.20.00
Like all of the world, we are junkies for the latest fads.
In Israel, we could only dream about being able to see the
television shows that have made America great.
Then, one day, we happened upon an old favorite.
In Russian

We had forgotten our

After a Saturday night spent watching a quiz show in a language you

B'Evrit
Continuing our theme of recording off the television, we
were lucky enough to find the show on Israeli channel 2,
One question was answered
P5250001
another was asked
P5250002
and answered for 2000 shekels
P5250003
After a commercial
P5250004
the stakes went up to 4000 shekels
P5250005
Another question asked
P5250006
and answered
P5250007
and we were at 8000 shekels
P5250008
Another question
P5250009
with answer
P5250010
followed by excitement
P5250011
and the show's logo
P5250012
The next question
P5250013
had him polling the audience
P5250014
and getting ready
P5250015
to go for 32,000 shekels
P5250016
Here he failed
P5250017
a question had to be asked of a group of contestants

Back to Jerusalem
05.26.00
Our time here is running out and so we decided to pay one
last visit to Jerusalem.
On Friday night we drove to Jerusalem and went to see the
people at the Western Wall welcome the Shabbat. Of course, we could
not take pictures because Shabbat was coming in. But none of us will
forget the excitement of the occasion as we watch the orthodox sing and dance
and welcome the Sabbath Queen.
We then went to the Armenian Tavern for our own dinner.
Suzanne and Benjamin
P5260020
ere a little tired as they waited for the food
but Benjamin perked up once he got a drink.
P5260022
and Suzanne let us experiment with her picture without
P5260025
and with
P5260026
flash.
David's beard
P5260021
so impressed Jane that she decided to make a bread beard
P5260023
This didn't make it any easier for Sarah to keep her eyes opened
P5260024
05.27.00
All of this activity made everyone happy to sleep
P5270027
P5270028
or read
P5270029
P5270030
into the next morning.
05.28.00
On Sunday, we did an exploration of the new city
starting at the pay phones near Ben Yehuda Street
P5280031
It was a day of eating
P5280032
P5280033
starting with bagels
P5280034
not to mention the special Lag B'Omer offer.
Next we bought shoes for the girls from this kind man
P5280035
took a picture of this bus
P5280036
that got in the way of our picture of the Glat Kosher Sbarro's
P5280037
Next we were off to the produce market
P5280038
after which we stopped because Jane and Benjamin were intrigued by
this man playing the old shell game.
P5280039
P5280040
Sarah bought sandals at this store
P5280041
we passed a kosher KFC
P5280042
and David finally found a gift shop sign he could like
P5280043
Fortunately, MacDonald's has relaxed their
policy
P5280044
so we could use their sherutim.
We decided to skip the Masters of Bizarre
P5280045
and on our way home, we stopped for ice cream
P5280046
and a family picture
P5280047
In the evening, we decided to pay one last visit to the
Western Wall
P5280053
P5280055
P5280054
on the way to dinner.
When we got there, we saw a cameraman
P5280048
P5280049
P5280051
P5280052
and some men with rifles
P5280050
Jane recorded the days purchases
Sarah's shoes
P5280057
Jane's shoes and pants
P5280056
and Suzanne's bracelet
P5280058
Then David and Benjamin headed to the wall
P5280059
P5280060
P5280061
P5280062
P5280063
inserted the note
P5280064
P5280065
P5280066
P5280067
and headed back
P5280068
P5280069
P5280070
P5280071
P5280072
P5280073
P5280074
P5280075
P5280076
P5280077
P5280078
then along the path
P5280079
P5280080
P5280081
P5280082
P5280083
P5280084
and onto the plaza.
P5280085
We took our last pictures on the plaza
P5280086
P5280087
P5280088
and then headed to the Cardo for dinner
P5280089
They dressed us
P5280090
P5280091
P5280092
for a Roman feast
P5280093
Then the juggler performed
P5280094
P5280095
He threatened to chop a carrot on Sarah's head
P5280096
P5280097
Next, the doctor offered to cure us
with red pepper ear rings
P5280098
for Jane
P5280099
and a lettuce hat for Suzanne
P5280100
P5280101
We posed for one final picture as Caesar's
P5280102
and then headed home for the night.
On the way out of town, we stopped at the Israel Museum and
the Shrine of the Book
P5280105
where a sandwich stand had the right message
P5280104
and we took the obligatory phone booth picture
P5280103

Jane's picture experiments
06.03.00
We don't have a scanner here.
Jane needed some pictures of her Princeton friends for her
Spanish project.
So, she decided to experiment with ways of getting good
enough pictures using the digital camera essentially as a scanner.
Those of you who think this was a silly idea are referred to
where David and Sarah were able to use
the results of previous research about photography off
the television set.
The first pictures washed out

A day in Sefad
06.04.00
Mike Churgin
P6020001
came for a visit. We had wanted to go to Sefad for a while. He
agreed, so we headed off.

we were welcomed warmly

P6040002
P6040003
P6040004

P6040006
was in a good mood
except for the poor lamb
P6040008
and Suzanne's
P6040011
which looked all right
P6040010
but a little lethargic.
David's mousaka
P6040009
came through in fine shape.
Once we took a picture of the waitress
P6040012
the rest of the staff
P6040013
P6040014
asked to also be enshrined in our archives.
With a good lunch in our systems, we walked down the steep steps
P6040015
past the broken house
P6040016
and down the narrow alley
P6040017
to the tallit makers shop
P6040018
We took the obligatory phone booth picture
P6040019
and went looking for the Messiah
P6040020
always being careful not to pollute
P6040021
We saw the ads for Shavuoth
P6040022
but probably won't have the peyot
P6040023
of these kids or the prayer vest
P6040024
of this man.
And, we will certainly miss M. D. Weinstock

A week at AIS
06.07.00
The school year is winding down, so
e are celebrating by a number of school
activities.
First, David recorded the school slogan
P6070001
on the way to Jane's band concert where the
first pictures were blocked and blurred
P6070002
P6070003
then she was hard to see behind the piano
P6070004
P6070005
P6070006
P6070007
P6070008
Finally, we got a good picture of her
standing at her position
P6070009
To celebrate, we took pictures of some of her friends.
Some were shy
P6070011
but we were able to get Claudia
P6070010
before Grant ran through her,
Ashen Leigh
P6070014
and Jessica and Cate
P6070012
P6070013
P6070015
Next we went to the awards ceremony,
the math teachers assembled,
P6070016
Sarah got to the stage,
P6070017
she took her place,
P6070018
all the winners posed
P6070019
and here is the proud mother
P6070020
Next, Sarah used the knowledge gained in
the scanner experiments
to take pictures from her yearbook.
We begin with a picture of Seongwon
P6070021
then the whole class
P6070022
P6070023
P6070024
and finally the teachers,
Mr. Sloan (Math) and Miss Patty (also Benjamin's teacher),
P6070025
Mr. Laferriere (English),
P6070026
Ms. Cohen (Spanish),
P6070027
and Mr. Blackman (History).
P6070028
Next, the hockey marathon
P6070029
including Elise
P6070030
the lady who made it all happen.
Finally, the French club
P6070031
but you can't see Julia's navel.

A visit to Zippori
06.10.00
We decided to go to Zippori
P6100037
to see the excavations and the mosaics with the Yahron's.
We got there early and passed our time at the snack bar
P6100032
and sherutim
P6100036
Sarah studied the map
P6100033
Jane got the water ready
P6100034
and Benjamin surveyed the scene
P6100035
Our first stop was the theater where the actors
P6100038
took their marks for the waiting audience
P6100039
At the next stop, the rabbi's wife
P6100040
was doing a demonstration for the audience.
We took the famous hands on ledge and grated fence photos
P6100042
P6100049
followed by a few of the remarkable view
P6100041
P6100043
P6100044
P6100045
P6100046
P6100047
and one of the sky ( what were we thinking )
P6100048
We stopped at the citadel and took pictures of both the view
P6100050
P6100051
P6100052
P6100055
P6100057
P6100058
and the people on the steps
P6100053
P6100054
and one of one of our favorite people
P6100056
Next it was time for the mosaics (the main event)

During this process, the battery kept flickering and occasionally we'd get
a long shot picture like this one
P6100060
On the way back, we stopped for lunch which brought everyone back to life

Leaving Israel -_ Time to Say GoodBye
06.15.00
The time had come to leave but we had to record some of our finest memories. The
dishwasher broke so we got to see Yossi
P6150013
again.
06.16.00
The next day, Carol
P6160014
who had introduced us to Yossi came to give Jane her penultimate flute lesson.
06.17.00
The next day was the last day here for Bart and Calista
P6170015
P6170016
and Jane said good bye to Devon
P6170021
who also took pictures of Jane
P6170022
P6170023
and they did their sister act in pictures
P6170017
P6170018
P6170019
P6170020
P6170024
P6170025
Next, Jane went to the dance at her school and photographed

P6170027
and then with Joan (pronounced as though it were JoAnne)
P6170028
P6170030
and then the rafters of the gym
P6170029
and then they took a picture of Jane

P6170036
Next came Emes(e) and Claudia
P6170032
Luca (with Bayan in the background)

Next it was time for David's last trip to the Technion. He began by recording the new
bus stop blocked by a sherut
P6190055
then the highway
P6190056
the bus stop from above
P6190057
with a bus pulling out ( hope it's not mine )
P6190058
then the highway towards Haifa
P6190059
the bus stop from behind
P6190060
and a sherut to Netanya (at least one a minute)
P6190061
at the bus stop.
06.21.00
Next it was time for Benjamin's class to put on its final show.
P6210072
We recorded the directions to the school
P6210062
He went into the classroom
P6210063
and sat with the other children
P6210064
and here was the proud Mom
P6210065
The show was about INSECTS
P6210066
The class stood on the sidelines
P6210067
waiting to enter.
In they came
P6210068
to do the stick and scarf dance
P6210069
P6210070
P6210071
They sang
P6210073

with Benjamin as number 7
P6210076
Next he did his butterfly wing thing
P6210077
and read the Very Hungry Caterpillar
P6210078
There were refreshments and we made a beautiful spider (8 legs )
P6210079
Benjamin posed with his best pal Jonathan
P6210080
and the 2 of them posed with Miss Patty

P6230087
and the many moods of Jessica

P6230091
Next, Ashen Leigh took a picture of herself
P6230092
Jessica did her Blair Witch imitation
P6230093
and Ghi and John Long were as much as the batteries could take
P6230094
06.25.00
There are many many more memories but we will spare you photographs supporting the
rest.
Finally, we took pictures of Netta, our landlady

Tel Aviv to Rome
06.26.00
The time came to go to Ben Gurion Airport and catch the flight to Rome
P6260017
The family got up early so everyone was excited to be at the airport
P6260018
P6260019
P6260020
When we got to Rome, we did like the Romans and we ate.
Jane enjoyed the bread
P6260021
Sarah was incognito
P6260022
Suzanne was happy to be off the plane
P6260023
David allowed his new beard to be photographed
P6260025
and Benjamin agreed to a photo shoot
P6260024
P6260026
P6260027
Before leaving we took a picture of the waiters
P6260028
Back at our apartment, we noticed that the US embassy to the Vatican
P6260029
is across the street (but still no sightings of THE ambassador).
We also took the obligatory phone booth picture
P6260030
as well as a picture of the Palatine which we overlook
P6260031
to remind us that Rome wasn't built in a day.
../../Sabbat/Pics/06.27.00RomeDay1--AncientRome/
Suzanne's Birthday in Rome -- The Ancient City and the Piazza Navona
06.27.00
It was our first full day in Rome. We woke up and when the buzzer rang, we came out to
meet our guide Laura who was to take us on a walking tour of Ancient Rome. On the
way to our first stop, the Arch of Constantine,
P6270001
she told us the history of the founding of the city and gave us the background we would
need to put the Forum,
P6270006
Palantine, and Coliseum
P6270002
into the proper context.
We couldn't help but take a lot of pictures of the Arch
P6270003
P6270004
P6270005
As we marched on, we also saw remarkable views of the city
P6270007
which our presence only enhanced
P6270008
This is one of the best preserved buildings we saw
P6270009
with the original doors (and rumor has it that the original key is also around).
This all made us ready for the next arch
P6270010
and a look into the old ruins in the area
P6270011
followed by yet another forum of columns
P6270012
P6270013
which Jane and Benjamin enjoyed
P6270014
Next we saw the place where Julius Caesar was cremated
P6270015
though we were told that he actually wasn't assassinated here. This is a memorial to
him.
P6270016
There followed more pictures of columns
P6270017
P6270018
Those of you who endured our Egypt series will be grateful that there are no
hieroglyphics in Rome.
Next we saw the so called mile marker
P6270019
Since all roads lead to Rome, there needs to be a place in Rome from which their distance
is measured. Well, this is it.
There followed more arch pictures
P6270020
P6270021
P6270022
P6270023
P6270024
This column
P6270025
gives a sense of just how high the mud rose during the years the Forum was abandoned.
We again peeked out to views of Rome
P6270026
before visiting the rooms of the Senate
P6270027
P6270028
Then, some last pictures of columns
P6270029
P6270030
P6270031
P6270032
P6270033
before heading up to the Palatine for an overview
P6270034
P6270035
P6270036
P6270037
P6270038
P6270039
P6270040
P6270041
P6270042
P6270043
P6270044
P6270045
P6270046
P6270047
P6270048
P6270053
P6270054
P6270055
P6270056
We also paused to take pictures of the remarkable palace on the Palatine
P6270049
P6270050
P6270051
P6270052
P6270059
P6270063
including the dining room
P6270060
P6270061
P6270062
not to mention pictures of some of us
P6270057
P6270058
On the way to the coliseum, we paused for a food break
P6270064
from these guys who had good hot dogs.
When we got there, the gladiators
P6270065
welcomed us at the outside structure
P6270066
but we quickly went inside
P6270067
and took pictures of the area (formerly underground) where the gladiators warmed up
P6270068
P6270069
P6270070
P6270072
and of the stands
P6270071
where Jane sat
P6270073
and chatted with Benjamin
P6270074
and watched Sarah and Suzanne
P6270075
P6270076
P6270077
as they all waited
for things to start.
Eventually we made our way to the area
P6270078
P6270079
where people must have snuck out for a smoke.
After lunch, we stopped on the walk home to get gelato
P6270080
P6270081
and then came home for naps.
Eventually we headed back out but some of us made it across the avenue and had to wait
for the others
P6270082
On our walk, we passed people staging a sit in for this cause
P6270083
this car
P6270084
that the kids love
and this artifact
P6270085
of America.
Eventually we got to the Piazza Navona
P6270086
with this wonderful fountain
P6270087
P6270088
P6270092
this obelisk
P6270090
these people on stilts
P6270089
and this King Tut impersonator
P6270091
We ended the night with dinner at a cafe nearby. This person
P6270093
kept her phone call going for our whole meal.
And we ended the night with a picture
P6270094
of the birthday girl.
../../Sabbat/Pics/06.28.00RomeDay2--TheVatican/
Rome Day 2 – Going to see the Pope
06.28.00
This was our day to go to the Vatican and try to see the Pope. Despite his morning
audience, we decided to go in the afternoon in the hopes of avoiding the crowd.
Unfortunately, when we started with the Vatican Museum, the crowds were evident even
as we started up the escalator
P6280001
When we got to the top, we saw this amazing reflecting ball
P6280002
and there were lots of statues and waiting people
P6280003
The statues were quite impressive
P6280004
P6280005
P6280006
P6280008
including Perseus
P6280007
and the trio
P6280009
who would have saved Troy for Rome had it not been for Athena.
We also saw this guy who really had developed the muscles
P6280010
in what was left of his body.
This remarkable table
P6280011
maybe belonged to Nero.
This Hercules
P6280012
was quite impressive with his lion and weapon.
I liked this guy's beard
P6280013
not to mention one of the remarkable mosaics
P6280014
but the crowds continued to be so overwhelming
P6280015
that Sarah almost fainted.
Next, it was time for the main event
P6280017
P6280018
after looking at the Pope's viewing window
P6280016
but he wasn't there.
Because it is a special Jubilee year, we could enter via the holy door
P6280023
except
P6280022
when the sign was being blocked.
Saint Peter was all dressed up
P6280019
P6280020
because tomorrow is his special day.
The platform that Benini designed is quite impressive
P6280021
Our next stop was at the Vatican post office which is run by
P6280025
this guy. There we saw what might be the only
P6280024
P6280026
phone booths in the Vatican. After we filled out our cards, Jane mailed them
P6280027
and we were ready to continue our excursion.
Along the way to the Piazza Navona, we stopped for a few family group pictures
P6280028
P6280029
before taking the walking bridge
P6280030
across the Tiber.
We settled into a pleasant place for dinner
P6280031
P6280032
P6280033
P6280034
P6280036
As we were done with the main courses, along came the cappuccino
P6280037
which we finished
P6280038
and the fruit
P6280039
which we didn't.
Jane then took a series of pictures of Benjamin
P6280040
P6280041
P6280043
P6280045
P6280046
P6280047
P6280051
Sarah
P6280044
P6280050
and scenes
P6280035
P6280042
P6280048
P6280049
of the restaurant.
We took a final picture of our waiter and his pal Luca
P6280052
and went back to take a few more pictures of the fountains in the piazza
P6280053
P6280054
On the walk home we passed the piazza of Vittorio Emanuelle II
P6280055
quite an impressive sight.
../../Sabbat/Pics/06.29.00RomeDay3--PantheonTreviFountainSpanishSteps/
Rome Day 3 – Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps
06.29.00
We started the day by taking a phone booth picture
P6290001
as we walked to the Pantheon
P6290002
outer walls through the outer doors
P6290003
P6290018
P6290019
P6290020
P6290021
that are 1800 years old
and up to the sky
P6290004
P6290006
and some pictures of the interior
P6290005
P6290007
P6290009
P6290010
P6290012
P6290014
P6290015
including us
P6290008
P6290013
P6290016
and the holes
P6290011
P6290017
where the water goes.
Once outside, we took pictures of the facade
P6290022
P6290023
P6290024
P6290027
including the ancient Roman
P6290029
P6290030
P6290031
and the structures across the street
P6290025
P6290026
P6290028
and headed off to lunch.
On the way to lunch, it started to rain and the restaurant was not yet open ( some
people think we used our friends at the Vatican from yesterday to bring on the rain )
so we went back to the Pantheon to see whether the rain does come in through the hole in
the roof.
P6290032
P6290034
P6290035
P6290036
P6290037
and onto the floor
P6290033
P6290039
The photographer
P6290038
did a marvelous jobs of capturing the droplets of rain as they made their way down.
After lunch we began our walk to the Trevi Fountain through this beautiful street
P6290040
that was supposed to have the best chocolate in Rome (which unfortunately was closed).
At the Trevi Fountain, we recorded the structure
P6290041
P6290042
P6290043
P6290044
P6290045
P6290046
P6290047
P6290055
P6290056
P6290057
P6290058
P6290059
P6290065
P6290069
P6290071
as well as ourselves
P6290048
P6290049
P6290050
P6290051
P6290052
P6290053
P6290054
P6290061
P6290062
P6290063
P6290064
doing the coin toss shuffle
and the water itself
P6290060
curiously it stopped raining just when we got to the fountain (as though arranged by
our contacts who made it start to rain so that we could see the Pantheon both ways)
We also took some gratuitous pictures
P6290066
P6290067
P6290068
P6290070
of the ground and the man with the video camera.
Next we began our pilgrimage
P6290072
to the alleged site
P6290073
of the finest gelato in all of Italy.
This man
P6290074
spooned it out
P6290075
including licorice flavored that was a religious experience ( where else but in Rome
). He even took the obligatory picture of us
P6290076
enjoying his wares.
Next we went to the Via Veneto where we saw this gentleman
P6290077
P6290078
holding forth in a cafe near these steps
P6290079
P6290080
P6290081
P6290082
which imitate the Spanish Steps.
We later discovered that he was a waiter at the establishment and that these were not the
real Spanish Steps but we did see Jane's middle name

on the way

to the real thing along with this sign
P6290085
At the real Spanish steps, this was the view from on top
P6290086
P6290087
P6290089
P6290091
and this is how the steps looked
P6290088
and here was the skyline

This was the view up from the bottom

along with the view at that level
P6290095
P6290097
P6290098
P6290099
We walked around the bottom but Jane was disappointed
P6290100
because Georgio Armani was closed.
We took a subway home
P6290101
and managed to avoid the pickpockets.

Our last day in Rome
06.30.00
This was to be our last day in Rome and we approached it without much agenda. We
began by going to the subway
P6300001
to catch a train back to the Via Veneto. Once there, we found some workers
P6300002
in a labor dispute. After seeing the bone museum we changed money at a bank
where the entry was like this
P6300036
and then saw
P6300003
the American Embassy and headed for the Villa Borghese where we saw the statue
P6300004
P6300005
of Goethe. At our lunch, we were all happy
P6300010
P6300011
P6300012
P6300013
P6300014
because of the good food
P6300007
P6300008
P6300009
so we decided to repeat the fork photograph
P6300006
pictures.
After picking up our rental minivan
P6300016
and bringing it home, we decided to take some pictures of the beautiful villa where we
are living
P6300015
P6300017
P6300018
P6300019
P6300020
Then it was time to take an evening stroll to the wonderful square (with the statues of the
dead Caesars)
P6300025
P6300026
P6300027
P6300028
P6300029

Rome to Villamagna
07.01.00
It became time to leave Rome and head north.
So we said good bye to our landlady
P7010001
P7010002
and started to pack the car. There were problems which caused Suzanne to cut her leg
( no picture available ) and David to cut his hand
P7010040
Along the way, we stopped in Orvieto which was marvelous but we forgot the camera in
the car ( what were we thinking!!!! ).
Eventually we got to Villamagna (and back to bringing the camera with us).
Our apartment here is charming
P7010006
P7010016
P7010020
and has a swimming pool
P7010010
P7010011
P7010012
P7010013
P7010017
P7010018
which Benjamin has been enjoying
P7010003
P7010004
P7010005
P7010007
P7010008
P7010009
P7010014
P7010015
P7010019
along with remarkable scenery

and lavender growing
P7010025
P7010026
P7010028
P7010029
P7010030
and the owners' dogs
P7010027
P7010031
On the way to dinner, we passed out of Villamagna
P7010034
in the midst of a beautiful sunset
P7010032
P7010033
over the Tuscany countryside
to go to THE local restaurant.
Everyone was happy to be there
P7010035
P7010036
P7010037
P7010038
P7010039
especially when the vegetarian antipasto came
P7010041
P7010042
While we were not very successful in our attempts to capture the lady at the next table
P7010043
P7010044
we did get pictures of the restaurant's service with
P7010045
and without
P7010046
P7010047
flash.
By now, it was getting late
P7010049
as Benjamin demonstrated
P7010048
but we did pause to chat with and record
P7010050
P7010051
the Cantabrigians at the next table before we headed home for the night.
../../Sabbat/Pics/07.02.00Chianti/
A day in Chianti
07.02.00
It was our first day in Tuscany and we decided to drive through the Chianti region.
We saw this sign
P7020001
and Benjamin and Jane jumped at the chance
P7020002
P7020004
to climb in the park. Suzanne watched
P7020003
and Sarah stayed in the car
P7020005
with the air conditioning on. This guy
P7020006
stayed on the hill and watched us. There was a nice view of the city street
P7020007
and of the hills it overlooked
P7020008
We liked Strada especially when we found the obligatory phone booth
P7020009
but pictures like this
P7020010
made us wonder if it was ok for Benjamin to open his store
P7020011
and have Suzanne as his customer.
Next we drove on to Greve. Our first view of the city was a takeoff on the old Scott
McNealy expression. This duck
P7020012
was eating lunch while waiting to be lunch for someone else. We saw Giovanni de
Verrazzano
P7020013
from the bridge of the same name. On the way to lunch, we captured
P7020014
the phone booth of Greve. These people
P7020022
P7020023
were nice enough to make space for us
P7020015
P7020016
P7020018
P7020019
including Sarah who must have been very hungry
P7020017
at their table.
After we ate some of these dishes
P7020020
P7020021
Sarah
P7020024
P7020025
sprang back to life. We all appreciated the good job our waiter
P7020026
did.
Next we went to this gelato store
P7020030
P7020029
where the ice cream was good
P7020027
including the pink stuff
P7020028
From there, it was on to Montefioralle
P7020032
where the church was closed but the phone booth was open
P7020031
and these people had an interesting world view on their buzzer
P7020033
We came home hot and tired and took a small dip
P7020034
P7020035
P7020036
before heading down the hill
P7020037
to the local pizzeria where Sarah had foccacchina
P7020040
Jane had margherita
P7020042
Suzanne had Caprese
P7020041
Benjamin had margherita with olives
P7020038
and I had vegetariano
P7020039
For dessert we had tartuffo
P7020043
P7020044
and headed back to rest for another day of eating and touring.
../../Sabbat/Pics/07.03.00Firenze/
A day in Firenze
07.03.00
We had arranged to meet the DeMillos and the McKeon/Williams in Firenze for the day
so we got to the Stazione early to take this phone booth picture
P7030001
before everyone arrived
P7030002
P7030003
for the group photos
which Caroline also took
P7030004
Our group linked up in teams with Sarah and Cara
P7030005
Jane and Lucy
P7030006
Suzanne and Michael
P7030007
Rich and Ronnie
P7030008
Benjamin sitting on my shoes ( over the sight of the effects of fine Italian pasta )
P7030009
and the rest of me
P7030010
and Lucy
P7030011
with the Duomo in the background.
We made a short stop at the Duomo to see the ceiling
P7030012
which would later inspire us to walk above it.
But first there was the issue of lunch.
Sarah and Benjamin
P7030016
had the spaghetti pomodoro
P7030015
and ravioli spinaci
P7030014
respectively. I
P7030021
had the pasta with porcini mushrooms
P7030013
The others
P7030017
P7030018
P7030019
P7030020
had varying portions of the
P7030022
steak Florentine.
After lunch, we went to the market place
P7030026
to see the pig
P7030023
P7030024
and rub his nose
P7030025
Next, we went to this hat store
P7030027
where Rich bought this hat
P7030028
which Sarah considers very fine.
Cara bought a bandage at the Farmacia.
This fit her elbow well
P7030029
and made the DeMillo family
P7030030
happy. Not to be outdone, Suzanne and Sarah bought this purse
P7030031
with the helpful guidance of Cara.
Next, it was time to get our exercise. We found this line
P7030032
and waited in it
P7030033
while noticing how high the bell tower
P7030034
is. Then, it was time to go in
P7030035
and walk up to the first level
P7030036
from which the ceiling seemed much closer
P7030037
and then to the top from which the bell tower
P7030038
didn't seem so high.
Suzanne was happy to be at the top
P7030039
as were Benjamin
P7030040
and Sarah
P7030041
We found our village (Villamagna) in the background
P7030042
as we scanned the Tuscan hills
P7030043
before it was time to start the trip back down
P7030044
Once down, Sarah had to inspect the doors of the baptistery
P7030045
to see if they looked like the doors to heaven. Suzanne, Rich and Ronnie
P7030046
read that the real doors were elsewhere which explained why they didn't impress Sarah.
But the duomo
P7030047
remained exciting to us as we celebrated over gelato and granita limone
P7030048
On our way out of town, we made our way to the stazione once more where Sarah and
Benjamin
P7030051
contemplated taking the train to Paris and we took the obligatory phone booth pictures
P7030049
including this phone booth picture
P7030050
where Sarah was actually talking to another person.
../../Sabbat/Pics/07.04.00July4thInTuscany/
July 4th in Tuscany
07.04.00
It was Independence Day for us expatriates, so we got together with some other
Americans who decided to take group photographs
P7040001
until the rain came. The Italian dogs thought that celebrating meant getting into our car
P7040002
P7040003
until Michael could coerce them
P7040004
into leaving.
All this discussion made us hungry so we walked up
P7040005
to Centanni's
P7040006
where Jane
P7040007
Lucy
P7040008
Caroline
P7040009
Michael
P7040010
Suzanne
P7040011
Benjamin
P7040012
David
P7040013
and Sarah
P7040014
had insalata mista
P7040015
ricotta ravioli with spinaci e ragu
P7040016
proscuito e melone
P7040017
and some unidentified pasta dishes
P7040018
P7040020
that we managed to finish
P7040019
to the satisfaction of our waiter
P7040021
After lunch, Lucy and Jane did their rabbit performance
P7040022
P7040023
P7040024
P7040025
and read the Italian newspaper
P7040026
after which we made our way to see this girl
P7040027
who gave us tasty gelato at cheap prices.
We spent the rest of the afternoon sitting around the pool too mellow to engage and
photography. Dinner was at a pizzeria in Bagno a Ripoli but unfortunately we forgot to
bring the camera so you will have to imagine how the very sweet waiter looked and what
happened in the park after dinner.
../../Sabbat/Pics/07.05.00Firenze-Day2/
Back to Firenze – Uffizi, Santa Croce, Boboli Gardens and more
07.05.00
We went back to Firenze. Our first stop was the Uffizi, so we were glad for the sign
P7050001
that pointed the way for us. When we got there, there was a wide assortment of statues
outside, some real
P7050003
P7050008
and some imaginary.
P7050002
Some were even preparing for the job or being on break
P7050005
P7050006
P7050007
P7050009
and this lucky couple was getting married.
P7050004
We even saw these people in the museum who were pretending to be mobile statues
P7050012
Once we got into the museum, we still had to wait
P7050010
but were glad to be ahead of these people
P7050011
Once inside, we made the rounds fairly quickly
P7050013
including the shell ceiling room
P7050014
the phone booth
P7050015
outside the men's room and the imitation of the statue
P7050018
and the reproductions of the boar
P7050017
from the straw market and Lao-coon
P7050016
from the Vatican museum.
After the museum, we went to the statue of Perseus
P7050019
where we met Jan
P7050020
and Jan
P7050021
but not Jan and David
P7050022
On the way to lunch, we saw this
P7050023
electric 3 wheel car.
When we got to lunch at this restaurant
P7050035
our table was ready
P7050024
so we could sit down one by one
Jan
P7050025
Jan
P7050027
Suzanne
P7050028
Michael
P7050026
Caroline
P7050029
Jane
P7050030
Lucy
P7050031
Sarah
P7050032
Benjamin
P7050033
and David
P7050034
The waitress
P7050036
Brought some good pasta
P7050038
P7050039
which people really enjoyed eating
P7050037
especially Lucy
P7050040
P7050041
P7050042
Sarah had her eyes closed
P7050043
until she say all the coke
P7050044
P7050045
P7050046
P7050049
which blew up Jane's expression
P7050047
and made Lucy's eye ball pictures
P7050048
Eventually their creativity returned
P7050050
at about the time the meat came
P7050051
P7050052
After one last picture
P7050053
we headed off towards Santa Croce with one small photo op on the way
P7050054
The church is very impressive
P7050055
and it was nice to have Dante
P7050056
welcome us as Jane and Lucy
P7050057
made their way to the holy water.
This church is home to many famous dead Italians
P7050064
and a warning
about living ones
P7050058
that had me shaking the camera all around. The dead ones include
Dante
P7050059
Machiavelli
P7050060
P7050061
Rossini
P7050062
P7050063
Marconi
P7050067
da Vinci
P7050068
Fermi
P7050069
Galileo
P7050070
P7050071
There's also a room that you can light for 200 lire per minute
P7050065
and a few spurious Gutenberg bibles
P7050066
We took one last group photo
P7050072
P7050073
said good byes to Dante
P7050074
P7050075
and headed for our next stop, gelato
P7050077
by Vivoli
P7050076
The gelato was as good as it looked
P7050078
P7050079
Our next stop were the gardens of
P7050082
with their spectacular view
P7050080
of Firenze. As we walked along,
P7050081
we found a place for Benjamin's to pose
P7050085
P7050086
and a make your own statue pedestal
P7050083
P7050084
P7050088
P7050089
until the guard insisted that we start taking
less dangerous pictures
P7050087
Once in the gardens, we discovered a wonderful statue/sculpture
P7050090
and a beautiful fountain
P7050092
(notice Jane and Lucy in the background)
but it was hard to find our way
so we were often consulting maps
P7050091
and guide books. We found a sign to the coffee shop
P7050094
which had unfortunately closed.
We took
P7050095
P7050096
P7050097
and contributed
P7050093
to some group pictures
including this counting one
P7050098
../../Sabbat/Pics/07.06.00SiennaAndGreve/
Sienna and Greve
07.06.00
Today we went to Sienna. After some illegal driving through the streets of the walled
city, we got rid of the car and walked into town down streets like this
P7060002
that had adornments like these
P7060001
on their walls.
Next we walked to the Duomo seeing first the baptistery
P7060003
P7060004
where ceiling pictures like this
P7060005
can be taken if you have this
P7060006
for help. Of course, the real thing
P7060007
comes out better.
We paid our 1000 lire and listened to the commentary
P7060008
at high speed. Then we decided to help them
P7060009
and refill their holy water urn.
Next we decided to do fancy photography framing people in the archway
P7060010
P7060011
P7060012
P7060013
since it took so long to ascend the stairway. We entered through the holy door
P7060014
and were careful to obey the rules
P7060015
though we did take pictures of the phone booths
P7060016
outside the gift shop where we got this
P7060019
prized specimen. After a few final people pictures at the Duomo
P7060017
P7060018
it was time for lunch.
On the way to lunch we ran in to a parade of the winners of the Palio
P7060020
on Sunday. Here's our gang at lunch
Jane
P7060026
Lucy
P7060025
Sarah
P7060022
P7060027
Suzanne (and Jane)
P7060021
Benjamin
P7060023
and David
P7060024
The water bottle was beautiful
P7060028
though the label was impossible to remove. The food was good and good looking with
pizza margherita
P7060029
pizza with artichoke hearts
P7060030
proscuito e melone
P7060031
bruschetta
P7060032
spaghetti pomodoro
P7060033
The espresso benefited from this sugar
P7060034
and we captured the waiters
P7060035
P7060036
including ours
P7060038
Lucy made a heart from the water bottle ring
P7060037
to expand upon her noodle heart of yesterday.
Next we went to the bell tower
P7060039
and climbed the first 94 steps to this lady
P7060040
who led us to believe that there were 493 steps in all (actually there were only 400).
When we got near the top, we were rewarded with this view of the first bell
P7060041
and of the city
P7060042
P7060044
and of Suzanne
P7060043
We climbed on
P7060045
to reach the real top
P7060046
from which we could see the restaurant where we ate lunch
P7060047
and more views of the city
P7060048
P7060049
P7060050
P7060052
P7060056
including the Duomo
P7060054
the fountain
P7060057
and dead birds
P7060051
Lucy and Jane took this picture of David
P7060053
from the top bell
P7060055
We then did the long walk down
P7060058
P7060059
P7060060
Our last stop in Sienna was at Nannini
P7060061
for gelato.
Of course we had to take a few more pictures of the tower we'd climbed
P7060062
P7060063
as we left town for the drive to Greve.
While lost in Greve, we found what we had been looking for for the last few days
P7060064
a laundry that would wash our clothes for 12,000 lire for 5 kg.
This helped us find our way
P7060065
so that Jane
P7060066
and Benjamin
P7060069
could have a swim
with Suzanne
P7060067
while Sarah finished her book
P7060068
We then drove up the hill for dinner at this place
P7060071
where fortunately we had brought no dogs along
P7060070
so we could be seated
as the sun began to set
P7060072
Everyone was there
Suzanne
P7060073
Benjamin
P7060075
Jan
P7060076
Jan
P7060077
Sarah
P7060078
and Jane
P7060079
Sarah took pictures of the table trying to get rainbows
P7060074
P7060081
P7060082
alternating with pictures of the skyline as the sun set
P7060080
P7060083
P7060084
P7060085
P7060086
P7060087
P7060088
P7060089
and we concluded dinner with pictures of Benjamin's dessert
P7060090
P7060091

San Gimignano
07.07.00
This was the day we drove to San Gimignano and parked in this area
P7070001
When we entered the town, we first saw this tower
P7070002
and then the Duomo
P7070003
P7070004
We stayed behind the Duomo
P7070005
to watch an impromptu flute concert
P7070006
before bells started to ring
P7070007
P7070008
P7070009
because of the time
P7070010
and we tried to catch clappers
P7070011
P7070012
P7070013
P7070014
without success.
Next we went to check out the grand tower frescos
P7070015
and took some family pictures at the wishing well

Everyone

was hungry for lunch which
involved fantastic

P7070026
They left their calling card
P7070027
with the check including a poem
P7070028
about people who missed the restaurant when it was closed.
Before leaving town, Sarah mailed our postcards
P7070029
Next we went to pick up our laundry from this guy
P7070030
who had run it through the machines without sorting by colors and hadn't bothered to get
it dry though he did pack it in bags without folding it.
We tried another shadow picture
P7070031
on the way to the shoe store in Greve
where Benjamin tried on
P7070032
and bought these shoes
P7070033
and Jane didn't buy these

The time came to say good bye to Daniella
P7080001
our landlady in Villamagna
and her dogs
P7080002
and house
P7080003
and get some gas
P7080004
P7080005
for the trip to Venice. The ride went smoothly, so we got to this bar outside the airport in
time for a late lunch. The table was small
P7080006
P7080007
so we could get the whole family in just a few shots plus a few
P7080008
P7080009
individual pictures to finish the scene.
The boat came on time to take us to our hotel. The road was choppy
P7080010
but we were soon standing in San Marco
P7080011
and finding our first phone booth in Venice
P7080012
We walked past statues like this
P7080013
and over bridges like this
P7080014
to get to our dinner where everyone was hungry and tired
P7080015
P7080016
P7080017
P7080018
P7080019
until the food came
P7080020
P7080021
to satisfy Suzanne's craving for fish.
Our waiter
P7080022
assured us that it wouldn't rain on our way back. He was wrong but we still managed to
catch San Marco by night
P7080023
P7080024
P7080025
These pictures inspired us to think about making our own postcards. We began with the
following set

that we are sure will be best sellers.

Venice Day 2
We started our next day in Venice with a visit to San Marco Piazza
P7090001
where we considered engaging in pigeon chasing and feeding
P7090002
P7090003
P7090004
P7090005
P7090006
P7090007
P7090008
P7090009
P7090010
P7090012
P7090014
and waiting for the bells to toll
P7090011
( they never did ).
On the way to the vaporetto, we passed this construction
P7090013
and the Bridge of Sighs
P7090015
We took a lot of boats today with the water looking like this
P7090016
P7090024
P7090025
P7090030
the houses like this
P7090017

P7090023
P7090031
P7090032
P7090034
P7090035
P7090036
and the other boats like this
P7090018
P7090019
P7090020
P7090026
P7090027
P7090028
P7090029
P7090033
before we got off at this stop
P7090039
on the island of Murano where they cook glass in ovens
P7090037
like this one and children sit around
P7090038
while their mothers look at glass.
P7090040
We found a phone booth
P7090041
on the way to lunch where this waiter
P7090043
took a picture of all of us
P7090042
sitting by the canal and we then took our individual pictures
P7090044
P7090045
P7090046
P7090047
P7090048
and had wonderful vegetable soup
P7090050

P7090053

P7090054

P7090055
while this pigeon watched
P7090056
Seeing these people on the opposite of the canal
P7090049
P7090057
inspired Jane and Benjamin to walk across the bridge
P7090058
P7090059
take these pictures of us
P7090060
P7090061
P7090062
and then walk back.
P7090065
P7090064
Maybe they had too much
P7090063
wine?
When we explored the island, we found this glass statue
P7090066
of the Madonna to protect the port and this set of real Venetian blinds
P7090067
On the way back, we saw this ambulance
P7090069
If they don't make it in time, a notice like these is posted
P7090068
and you are buried on this island
P7090070
We then walked back to the hotel through alleys as narrow as this
P7090071
and found this Pokemon display
P7090072
in one of them.
Our evening excursion began with a visit to San Marco where Jane and Benjamin
P7090073
bought pigeon food and practiced feeding the pigeons
P7090074
P7090075
P7090076
P7090077
P7090078
P7090079
P7090080
P7090081
P7090082
P7090083
It was high tide, so the basilica
P7090084
was hard to get to, but not the tops of these statues
P7090085
P7090086
It was also chilly so we bought these sweatshirts from this man
P7090087
who unfortunately didn't carry Benjamin's size.
Dinner was indoors because it was cold but we were all eager to eat
P7090088
P7090089
P7090090
P7090091
P7090092
especially when the vegetables and cheese came
P7090093
(best cheese I've ever had) along with the gnocchi
P7090094
(new shape for us).
We actually used this phone booth
P7090095
for a call and then took some pictures off the boat on the way home
P7090096
P7090097
P7090098
P7090099
P7090100
to be made into possible future post cards.

Venice Day 3
This day involved walking around the streets of the city and looking for the right things
to buy, going to the Doges Palace, taking a ride on a gondola and various other
adventures. We began with a ride on the vaporetto
P7100001
past many gondolas
P7100002
ready for action on our way to the Rialto Bridge
P7100003
P7100004
P7100005
Once there, we found this hat for Benjamin
P7100006
but decided that this one
P7100007
fit better. Then we had to find a WC
P7100008
like this one. On our walk through the city, we saw this scene
P7100009
that seemed necessary for our album. Lunch was at a bar where everyone
P7100010
P7100011
P7100012
P7100013
P7100015
was happy to be eating and Benjamin
P7100014
gave a water bottle concert to those in the bar and the adjoining pizzeria
P7100016
Next we went past the good gelateria
P7100018
where we saw this sign in Hebrew
P7100017
and past this unique place
P7100019
until we reached this store that sold Doges
P7100020
P7100021
and this unique model
P7100022
(notice the photographic effects!).
We stopped on the way to our siesta at a cafe where David's menta granita
P7100023
was the hit.
We began the afternoon's activities at the Doges' Palace where the interior looks like this
P7100024
P7100034
P7100035
and the view includes this
P7100033
P7100036
P7100037
P7100038
not to mention the weird face
P7100025
and the statues of Atlas
P7100026
and Hercules
P7100029
We weren't allowed up the fancy stairs (since we are human)
P7100030
P7100031
P7100048
which are guarded by Jupiter and Neptune
P7100032
and so we had to go up the interior stairs
P7100027
P7100028
but we did get to see the
P7100039
Bridge of Sighs from which we captured these views
P7100040
P7100041
P7100042
P7100043
P7100044
from both directions and then from the Palace you can view out to the harbor in these
nice ways
P7100045
P7100046
P7100047
Next came the gondola ride. Our driver seemed to be in control
P7100049
which made all of us happy
P7100050
P7100051
P7100052
P7100053
P7100054
This led to an orgy of photography including views on the boat
P7100055
P7100056
P7100057
P7100060
P7100078
P7100091
the church of the Madonna
P7100058
because she saved them from a plague that killed 1/3 of the Venetians and views of other
gondolas
P7100059
P7100062
P7100063
P7100064
P7100067
P7100068
and of buildings along the canal
P7100061
P7100065
P7100066
P7100079
P7100080
P7100089
including the fanciest hotel in town
P7100069
and the place where a few Doges lived
P7100070
P7100071
P7100072
P7100073
P7100074
with a mosaic made of Murano glass and the postal service
P7100075
and a bridge
P7100076
at the closed museum Suzanne had hoped to visit and the places where Lord Byron
P7100077
and Mozart
P7100090
P7100092
lived. We turned at the Rialto bridge
P7100081
P7100082
P7100083
which we have visited before into a narrow canal
P7100084
P7100086
P7100087
P7100088
that had buildings in the modern Venetian style
P7100085
and a movie theater
P7100093
playing M-I-2.
One bridge was particularly hard to navigate
P7100094
P7100095
P7100096
before we got back and headed to our dinner.
After a few pictures
P7100097
P7100098
at Harry's Bar we headed off to dinner where everyone was tired and hungry
P7100099
P7100100
P7100101
P7100102
P7100103
Suzanne and David were quite happy
P7100104
and the waiter fell in love with Benjamin
P7100105
En route back to the hotel, we had what might be our last gelato in Italia
P7100106

Venice to Barcelona
07.11.00
This was a day of transition. We began the day in Venice waiting to get into the basilica
where the outside looks like this
P7110001
P7110003
Ahead of us in line were Jane and John
P7110002
from London, England.
Before we left town, Jane wanted to visit Giorgio Armani
P7110004
after which we waited at this view
P7110005
with our bags
P7110006
for our taxi to come. When he did, the sky was beautiful
P7110007
leading to an artistic image
P7110008
as we rode
P7110009
to the airport where we took the obligatory phone booth picture
P7110010
and ate ice cream (not gelato) from
P7110011
Haagen Dazs before heading to the gate
P7110012
and discovering that our flight was late. Though this didn't seem to bother Suzanne
P7110013
or Jane
P7110014
it seemed to make Sarah
P7110015
impatient. Benjamin
P7110016
was so intrigued by the dishwasher demonstration that he didn't mind.
After enduring the worst flight (bumpiness comparable to a horrible roller coaster and
worse) that any of us had endured, we found ourselves in Barcelona roaming the Ramblas
where the street people were out in force including the gilded twins
P7110017
P7110018
and this clown
P7110019
who didn't realize he was posing for one of my phone booth pictures along with
P7110021
this one. This woman
P7110020
seemed to have the answer to today's question (but we didn't know the question) and
these people
P7110022
serenaded us past the bird shop booths
P7110023
to the market
P7110024
P7110025
where the fish
P7110026
was looking good today.
We lasted until dinner time, though we were all tired
P7110027
P7110028
P7110029
P7110030
P7110031
We hope to be in better training for tomorrow night's dinner. Stay tuned.

Barcelona
07.12.00
Now that we were settled in Barcelona, it was time to start exploring which meant taking
a lot of pictures of Gaudi ( gentle viewer be warned that we were set off on a
photography orgy because we were so impressed ) but first we made our way down
the Ramblas where there was a new statue (the guy in uniform)
P7120001
and a protest march
P7120002
before we got to the Palau Guell
P7120003
This is one of the first building Gaudi designed. The facade was very impressive
P7120004
P7120005
as was the interior where photography was not allowed. We were allowed to take
pictures on the roof where there are numerous chimneys that we recorded
P7120006
P7120007
P7120008
P7120009
P7120010
P7120011
P7120012

P7120015
P7120016
P7120017
P7120018
P7120019
P7120020
P7120021
P7120022
P7120023
P7120024
P7120025
P7120029
P7120030
P7120031
P7120032
P7120033
P7120034
P7120035
P7120036
P7120037
including a few with us in them
P7120026
P7120027
P7120028
and one abstraction
P7120038
We stopped for a small bite for the kids here
P7120039
which was a better alternative than this
P7120040
and then headed for the Picasso museum (also no photography) and on to the cathedral
where we could only see the outside
P7120041
P7120042
P7120043
P7120044
along with King Tut
P7120045
who must have followed us from Rome.
Our late lunch was at a cafe where the waiters
P7120046
took good care of the 3 of us
P7120047
P7120048
P7120049
We then broke for siesta.
After siesta, we started off to see more Gaudi. En route, we stopped in the Placa
Cataluyna to take pictures of the pigeons (memories of Venice) and famous fountains
(memories of Rome)
P7120050
P7120051
P7120052
P7120053
and the statue of Barcelona
P7120054
We stopped at this cafe
P7120055
where this waiter
P7120062
brought some tapas to Jane
P7120056
who had just woken up, Benjamin
P7120057
who was tired from swimming, Suzanne
P7120058
who was happy, Sarah
P7120059
who ordered for us (en Espanol) and David with
P7120060
and without
P7120061
flash. Then we started walking and saw rooftops
P7120063
P7120064
begin to appear before we hit this facade
P7120065
and then this more remarkable one
P7120066
P7120067
P7120070
P7120073
P7120077
P7120079
P7120081
with great windows
P7120068
P7120069
P7120076
P7120078
and chimneys
P7120071
P7120072
and tourists
P7120074
P7120075
P7120080
We walked on and Benjamin was excited by spirals on the sidewalk
P7120082
as we added to our collections of pictures of
European Haagen Dazs
P7120083
Jane in front of Armani stores
P7120084
and phone booth pictures
P7120085
until we saw it
P7120086
in the distance. We still had to navigate some directions
P7120087
see spires
P7120088
and architecture
P7120089
that were not the real thing and cross a last street
P7120090
before we got there. Everything about the place, the facade,
P7120092
P7120095
P7120097
P7120101
P7120102
P7120103
P7120104
P7120105
P7120106
P7120107
P7120108
P7120109
P7120111
P7120112
P7120113
P7120114
P7120120
P7120121
the spires
P7120096
P7120099
P7120100
the ongoing construction
P7120091
P7120098
the ceiling
P7120110
and the spare parts
P7120093
was impressive so that we didn't mind that he
P7120094
had been there first. The climb up and down was on these
P7120115
remarkable steps and we were asked in not so subtle ways
P7120116
P7120117
P7120119
to help finish the construction.
On the way to the next Gaudi building, we came across this scene
P7120122
that adds to our collection of pictures of Benjamin in front of Pokemon signs in foreign
countries. The last building was this apartment building
with no straight lines
P7120123
P7120125
P7120126
P7120129
P7120133
and amazing grille work
P7120124
P7120127
P7120128
P7120130
and entrance
P7120131
that inspired this work of art
P7120132
07.13.00
We began this day by walking down the Ramblas where Jane met Christopher Columbus
P7130001
P7130002
and then headed to the funicular
P7130003
which took us to our goal
P7130004
the Miro museum. Once there, we saw a few of his sculptures
P7130005
P7130006
and then a temporary exhibit that included among other things an island
P7130007
and a phone booth
P7130008
Back to Miro, we liked this picture
P7130009
and then his sculpture garden
P7130010
P7130011
P7130012
P7130013
P7130014
P7130015
where they were setting up glasses
P7130016
for a banquet. We stared at a picture
P7130017
from the period when he was minimalist.
On our way to lunch, we found that Don Quixote
P7130018
had joined the characters on the Ramblas. We ended up at this place
P7130019
where everyone
P7130020
P7130021
P7130022
P7130023
P7130024
happily awaited their lunch and Benjamin
P7130025
was feeling just fine because his sandwich
P7130026
was good though perhaps not as beautiful as Suzanne's fish
P7130027
which made her even happier.
P7130028
We walked to the old City for dinner where our waiter
P7130031
who was named David and worked here
P7130036
took this picture of us
P7130030
Individually, we looked ok
P7130029
P7130032
P7130033
P7130034
P7130035
before dinner and even better after
P7130037
P7130038
On the way back to the hotel, we took a picture of the gas company
P7130040
where the fires were still burning and a final Barcelona at Night
P7130039
candidate picture.

Bilbao and Santillana del Mar
07.14.00
The time came to leave Barcelona and head into real Spain for some days. We
began our trip by flying to Bilbao where we were met by this message at the airport
P7140001
These people
P7140002
were nice enough to give us this car
P7140003
so that we could head to this main event
P7140024
where from this car park
P7140005
we could catch our first view
P7140004
of a remarkable building. We also enjoyed the trilingual nature of things with the Basque
translations of all of the signs.
We walked up these steps
P7140006
to be greeted by this puppy dog
P7140007
P7140009
P7140012
and then zoomed in
P7140008
and even further
P7140010
P7140027
P7140028
to try and figure it out.
Next we walked down the neighboring bridge
P7140011
P7140013
P7140014
P7140015
to try and absorb the design of the museum. The lines and pieces were remarkable
P7140016
P7140017
P7140018
P7140019
P7140021
as was the interaction with the river
P7140020
P7140023
P7140025
P7140026
not to mention the cafe
P7140022
P7140029
Although they wouldn't let us take photos inside the museum, we did manage to get this
picture inside the men's room
P7140030
and our obligatory phone booth picture
P7140031
We fought the traffic out of Bilbao and then the maps into Santillana del Mar (town of 3
lies – not a holy place, not flat and not on the water) where we had a dinner of minestrone
P7140032
tortilla (aka potato omelet)
P7140033
pimento rellenos
P7140034
shrimp
P7140035
green beans
P7140036
and chicken
P7140038
that kept Benjamin going at a fast rate
P7140037
All of the food served by this waitress
P7140044
made us quite happy
P7140039
P7140040
P7140041
P7140042
P7140043
but didn't keep us from taking this unintelligible picture
P7140045
which we'll try to use in our Santillana By Blur series.

A Rainy Day in Santillana Del Mar
07.15.00
We were in Santillana Del Mar today and the weather was not particularly cooperative so
we had to come up with a plan for what to do. This wasn't so inconvenient since we
were all a little worn out and a low key day of checking out shops and churches in a small
town left over from medieval times and watching weddings happen in the present seemed
like a real possibility. So, we headed out to check out the shops
P7150001
where we found warming shoes. Next we made our way to the main church
P7150002
that dates from the 12th century. We knew we'd be going back there; we just didn't
realize how much time we'd be spending there. We did follow the signs
P7150003
P7150020
to get tickets with which to visit the church but because acts
P7150007
were happening, we realized we'd have to come back later to see the chapel.
So, I started taking pictures of the town
P7150004
including the watering troth
P7150005
at the end of the main street.
This inspired Suzanne to buy film
P7150006
P7150008
P7150009
P7150012
and do the same.
We went to the back side of the church and started to explore the structure
P7150010
P7150011
P7150015
P7150016
P7150019
and statues
P7150013
P7150014
P7150017
P7150018
By now the acts in the church were proceeding and this sign was posted
P7150021
to let us know that there would be excitement coming.
Tourists
P7150022
P7150024
kept coming and going into the church
even as the rice throwers
P7150023
gathered off the patio
P7150025
This car
P7150026
gave away what was about to happen (and indeed what the acts were).
Suzanne and Sarah watched from the sidelines
P7150027
as the crowds assembled
P7150028
P7150032
and these men
P7150029
started to guard the church to kept those assembled
P7150030
P7150031
from entering.
There was a break in the action, as this car approached
P7150033
and out she stepped
P7150034
P7150035
and prepared to enter the church on the arm of her father
P7150036
P7150037
with her aides in tow
P7150038
But, none of this had any impact on the assembled rice throwers
P7150039
so we were left to wonder what was happening
P7150040
Two conflicting theories developed – maybe the wedding hadn't happened yet or maybe
they were going back in so the photographers could capture the simulated wedding on
film. Later when we learned the truth (or so we think) we realized how wrong we were.
For now, we occupied ourselves by taking pictures of Sarah's hand
P7150041
After a few more pictures of the church
P7150042
P7150043
and of the house next door
P7150044
where the rice throwers were assembled, the newlyweds
P7150045
made their appearance
P7150046
and got pelted
P7150047
P7150048
P7150049
to the delight of the rice throwers
P7150050
With our final glimpses of the scene
P7150052
and the assembled spectators
P7150051
we realized that there had been 2 weddings and that this bride was different from the one
we had seen entering the church.
All of this activity, made us hungry, so we headed to our table at the restaurant
P7150056
P7150057
P7150058
P7150059
P7150060
where the local stew
P7150053
jamon and melon
P7150055
and local cheese plate
P7150054
delivered by this waiter
P7150061
made us happy.
After a long siesta, we headed out to explore the town again. In the clear day, we could
see some beautiful street scenes
P7150062
P7150063
and the phone booth
P7150064
in our hotel's lobby before going to the torture museum
where these warnings
P7150066
were posted.
Being tired, we did limited photography at dinner recording just Suzanne's main course
P7150067
of smoked salmon and her dessert
P7150068
P7150069
of chocolate mousse.

The Road To Fuente De
07.16.00
Our time in Santillana del Mar was up. The weather was clearing so we expected to have
a good ride to the mountains (along the beach) and since we had seen Santillana from end
to end we were ready to begin the journey forward. We first stopped in Camillas where
there is a Gaudi building (among other things). Little did we know that we'd be greeted
by these folks
P7160001
It was more comfortable to walk into the town and find a phone booth
P7160002
and the town church
P7160003
with its clock tower
P7160004
that Suzanne admired
P7160005
and a fountain
P7160006
on the square.
But, our mail goal was to find
P7160007
the Gaudi designed building which didn't disappoint
P7160008
on first view with its beautiful tower
P7160009
or full facade
P7160010
The vicinity was nice as well with the University
P7160011
and the Palacio
P7160012
where cameras were not allowed
P7160013
We did take a picture with Gaudi himself
P7160014
and these folks
P7160016
were nice enough to take this picture
P7160015
of all of us. This inspired us to take more views of the house
P7160017
P7160018
P7160019
P7160020
P7160021
P7160022
P7160024
and the leaves of the trees around it
P7160023
We stayed for lunch in the Gaudi house where
Jane
P7160026
had the chicken stuffed with duck
P7160032
and the vanilla ice cream (home made) covered with chocolate sauce
P7160033
Suzanne
P7160027
had the coffee black and white
P7160036
(lest anyone worry, she also had a main course but we don't take pictures of anchovies).
Sarah
P7160025
and David
P7160029
had the vegetable plate
P7160031
and David also had the crème Catalan (which is also called crème brulee)
P7160035
and Benjamin
P7160028
had sweet and sour duck
P7160030
and chocolate mousse
P7160034
We then walked back past the statue
P7160038
atop the steps
P7160037
and headed to this beach
P7160049
where the yellow flags meant precaucion
P7160050
The beach was beautiful in all directions
P7160039
P7160040
P7160042
P7160043
which the family enjoyed
P7160041
P7160047
P7160048
as Benjamin built his sandcastle
P7160044
P7160045
and Sarah and Jane read
P7160046
Once in Fuente De, we enjoyed the views (pictures to come later) and the low key place
as we hung out and eventually had our dinner. Suzanne
P7160051
had jambon y melon
P7160055
Jane
P7160052
had macaroni with sausage
P7160056
Sarah
P7160053
had pasta
P7160057
David
P7160054
had the cheese plate
P7160058
and Benjamin
P7160061
had fried chicken
P7160059
After dinner, Benjamin and David
P7160062
came into focus
P7160063
by doing this coloring project
P7160060
while this English couple
P7160065
decided they should take our group picture
P7160064
../../Sabbat/Pics/07.17.00HikingInFuenteDe/
Hiking in Fuente De
07.17.00
We were in Fuente De in the Picos de Europa National Park. The scenery was fantastic,
the day was beautiful and the mountains were right there, so once we looked at this view
P7170001
we knew we had to get to the top and the cable car
P7170002
was the way to do it once we repaired Suzanne's injured finger
P7170003
So we walked up to the teleforico (cable car) station and bought some water (agua) from
these machines
P7170004
We figured that we could walk to lunch
P7170005
once at the top. We joined the crowd waiting
P7170006
as the car came down to get us
P7170007
and landed at the right spot
P7170008
We boarded with the crowd
P7170009
and hung from our straps
P7170010
It didn't take long before the parking lot was far below
P7170011
and we were above the tree tops
P7170012
and getting closer to the rocks
P7170013
at the top happy that the cable
P7170014
P7170015
was holding and giving the good view as we followed our shadow
P7170016
P7170018
as we enjoyed the view
P7170017
until we reached the top
P7170019
and could really enjoy the view
P7170020
This meant it was time to start walking
P7170021
in to the mountains
P7170022
P7170023
P7170025
P7170028
P7170029
P7170030
P7170031
P7170032
P7170033
P7170034
P7170035
P7170036
P7170038
stopping for the occasional picture
P7170024
P7170026
P7170027
P7170037
of us and sometimes snow
P7170039
and sometimes others
P7170040
P7170041
P7170042
Next, we came upon the cows and horses (vacas y caballos). To fully appreciate these
pictures, you need to hear the sound of cowbells each time one of the cows moved.
Sometimes they were on beautiful stretches of mountain
P7170043
P7170044
P7170047
P7170048
and sometimes they were with us
P7170045
and sometimes we were alone
P7170046
P7170050
and sometimes, it was just more mountain pictures
P7170049
They decided it was lunch time and so decided to head off but Jane decided to join them
P7170051
driving them past the rest of us
P7170052
P7170053
P7170054
and eventually passing us
P7170055
P7170056
as we headed to the restaurant
P7170057
at the 4km mark. To get there, we had to go past the sheep
P7170058
but we did get there and enjoyed our meal
P7170059
P7170060
P7170061
then Suzanne consulted with our neighbors
P7170062
P7170063
to plan the walk back – either 4km back to the cable car or 8km downhill to the town
below Fuente De. Eventually we decided on the longer walk which took us through some
great scenery
P7170064
that we all enjoyed
P7170065
P7170066
including the cows and horses
P7170067
until we came to these signs
P7170068
P7170069
along the trail
P7170070
We read this sign
P7170071
as we tied our shoes
P7170072
and looked at the red roofs below
P7170073
as the trail continued
P7170074
the mountains continued to impress
P7170075
and we continued our descent
P7170076
P7170077
P7170079
seeing the occasional red roof
P7170078
P7170080
P7170081
P7170082
P7170083
along the trail and taking breaks
P7170084
to rest our knees and ankles. We took a few last glimpses of where we'd been
P7170085
and were excited to see the red roofs ahead
P7170086
that seemed to represent our destination. This barn
P7170087
meant we were almost there. At the end, we were happy but tired
P7170089
and ready to go here
P7170088
for lots of liquid refreshments
P7170090
that refreshed all of us
P7170091
P7170092
P7170095
P7170093
P7170094
including Jane
P7170098
who was suffering from a bite on her arm
P7170097
on her hand as the sky started to get cloudy
P7170096
We took a taxi back to Fuente De where David decided to celebrate with a Cuban cigar
P7170099
in Castro fashion though he needed some help getting it lit
P7170100
P7170101
P7170102
P7170103
P7170104
finally succeeding
P7170105
P7170106
P7170107
P7170108
P7170109
P7170110
to the delight of Jane who felt it all had to be recorded on film.
Everyone was enjoying himself or herself
P7170111
as David and Sarah made progress in their books
P7170112
P7170116
P7170117
David built a large ash on his cigar
P7170113
that made its way into the lawn
P7170118
and the mountains
P7170114
P7170115
remained as beautiful as ever.
We were left to take the obligatory phone booth picture
P7170119
at the hotel (note than Jane actually was speaking on the phone) and to record some of
our dinner – the salad
P7170120
ordered by Sarah and David, the filet
P7170121
ordered by Benjamin, and the anise liqueur
P7170123
ordered by David.
We conclude a very active day with a self portrait
P7170122
done by Jane and a night time view
P7170124
of the mountains which were still lit at 1030PM.

A Day in Fuente De
07.18.00
We had gone for such a long walk yesterday that we were worn out today
P7180001
and there was no way to get us moving quickly. We did notice archery targets
P7180002
and bows
P7180003
and so decided to sign up for lessons. Jane started
P7180004
and seemed to have a good stroke
P7180005
P7180006
so Suzanne started to learn
P7180007
and developed her stroke
P7180008
P7180009
P7180010
until finally someone hit the target
P7180011
so David decided to get into the act
P7180012
P7180013
P7180014
to develop his stroke
P7180015
Next, Jane did some serious shooting
P7180016
against David
P7180017
P7180018
with good results for Jane
P7180020
This inspired Suzanne to come out of retirement and do some real aiming
P7180019
and this drove Jane to the heights of archery
P7180021
All this archery inspired us to take a road trip, so we drove down the road to Potes
P7180001Y
where lunch was a photo competition with Jane doing her Pinocchio
P7180002Y
act, Suzanne doing her headache
P7180003Y
act and Sarah enjoying it all
P7180004Y
while Benjamin showed off his scars from yesterday's walk
P7180005Y
We walked around the beautiful town
P7180007Y
P7180008Y
and met this guy
P7180006Y
in front of the torture museum.
Next we drove to the church where this
P7180009Y
symbolizes the gold cross that has part of the true cross in it and saluted the pilgrims
P7180010Y
P7180011Y
who make the trek from here to Santiago (which we will be making by car tomorrow).

The Road to Cambados
07.19.00
We woke up early in Fuente De for our long ride across northern Spain. We were
surprised to run into fog as we drove around the Picos de Europa heading towards Leon.
It was very much liking driving through clouds. This made it even more surprising when
we emerged from the clouds and were in sunlight looking down on a valley filled with
clouds and fog with peaks in the background
P7190001
P7190008
and higher peaks to the side in the sunlight
P7190002
as we watched other cars do the drive we had just completed
P7190003
This made an excellent background for this picture
P7190004
and Jane even considered diving in
P7190006
Nearby was a statue of a deer
P7190009
that we greeted
P7190005
P7190007
We took pictures of Suzanne against the background of the mountains
P7190010
P7190011
P7190012
P7190013
P7190014
and then were on our way. Along the way we saw some remarkable views like this
reflection
P7190015
The goal was to be in Astorga by 2PM to meet Jacobo and Barbara. The ride was longer
than expected so we just made it to find them at the cathedral
P7190028
with the pilgrim on top
P7190024
that was next to the Gaudi church
P7190023
P7190025
P7190026
with the stork's nest on top
P7190022
P7190027
Of course, all of this made everyone including
Jacobo
P7190021
Barbara
P7190020
Suzanne
P7190016
Benjamin
P7190019
Jane
P7190017
and Sarah
P7190018
hungry, so we ate some
P7190030
Benjamin played on the plaza
P7190029
and we then drove on stopping next at Benevente to see the castle
P7190031
that is the Paradores there. The kids had sandwiches
P7190032
in this picture taken by Jacobo
P7190033
and then we followed their car
P7190035
to Cambados as Benjamin slept

Cambados and La Toxa – A Day in Galicia
07.20.00
We woke up in Cambados and decided to start exploring since we were going to go to La
Toxa later in the day, we began our exploring in Cambados by going to the main square
in the town
P7200001
where everyone gathered in front of the iglesia (ie church)
P7200002
P7200003
P7200004
P7200005
P7200006
for pictures in all directions before we walked across the square
P7200007
P7200008
and towards the town
P7200009
where we saw a farmacia
P7200010
and then the statue of the man with the grapes (this is, after all, a wine growing region)
P7200011
P7200012
P7200013

along with the monument to Cabanillas
P7200055
P7200056
P7200057
P7200058
P7200059
P7200060
Once back at the hotel
P7200061
we all
P7200062
P7200063
P7200064
P7200065
P7200066
had lunch in front of this fountain
P7200067
Since we couldn't finish the tapas jamon
P7200068
we made a small art piece
P7200069
using them.
After a short siesta, we headed to La Toxa to meet Jacobo's family
P7200070
P7200071
P7200072
and head to sea. We passed ships like this
P7200073
and mussel farms like this
P7200074
until it was time to dock the boat
P7200075
P7200076
P7200077
and say hello to the crabs
P7200078
on the shore.
Only Barbara was brave enough to swim
P7200079
in the cold waters as Benjamin began his castle
P7200080
and the rest of us took group photos
P7200081
P7200082
When we were ready to leave the beach, Benjamin had built an elegant castle (complete
with pine cone cannon balls)
P7200083
and we boarded the boat where there were more people photos
P7200084
P7200085
P7200091
before we came to the mussel farms
P7200086
P7200087

P7200092
P7200097
including this boat

P7200096
and this one with a guard house
P7200098
in the water
P7200090
with Cambados
P7200099
in the background and the horizon far far away
P7200100
P7200101
We ended the day with dinner at the octopus
P7200102
restaurant not to mention the fish heads
P7200103
that made

P7200105
and Benjamin
P7200108
quite happy. Jacobo even used his fast hands
P7200083
to remove water and wine labels
P7200111
All this excitement out Benjamin
P7200112
to sleep so that we knew it was time to head home.
../../Sabbat/Pics/07.21.00SantiagoDeCompostela/
Santiago de Compostela
07.21.00
This was the day we drove to Santiago de Compostela. The town is famous for its
cathedral
P7210001
P7210002
P7210003
which was our
P7210004
first stop where we explored the town square and saw people in all manner of dress
P7210005
along with many pilgrims. This building
P7210006
has 365 windows, one for each day of the year (but I don't know what they do for leap
years).
Once inside the cathedral, we went to this statue
P7210007
P7210008
where you are to bump your head for good luck. David did so
P7210009
and almost lost his head in the process.
The altar in the church
P7210010
was quite impressive. We went behind it to see the bones of Santiago himself and then
roamed the corners of the church
P7210011
P7210012
waiting for mass
P7210013
to end.
At the end of mass, they brought down the big ropes
P7210014
P7210015
and attached the incense burner
P7210016
and to the excitement of Benjamin
P7210017
P7210018
they swung this all around the church starting slowly
P7210019
P7210020
P7210021
P7210026
P7210027
but then building up speed and smoke
P7210022
P7210023
until it was going full speed
P7210024
P7210025
and almost hitting the ceiling
P7210028
Eventually they slowed it down
P7210029
and stopped it
P7210030
P7210031
P7210032
but the incense burner
P7210033
was quite a sight to have seen as all those assembled agreed
P7210034
P7210035
P7210036
We passed the main fountain
P7210037
on the way to lunch
P7210038
P7210039
P7210040
P7210041
P7210042
P7210043
and the statue of Atlas
P7210044
on the way back to catch a few pictures of the cathedral in better light
P7210045
P7210046
P7210047
P7210048
and some group pictures in the town square
P7210049
P7210050
P7210051
P7210052
Once back in Cambados we relaxed at our pool
P7210053
being careful to follow the rules. Before heading to dinner, we catch an episode of Who
wants to be a Millionaire (!!!link goes here)
P7210054
P7210055
P7210056
en Espanol.
After dinner, we went to the playground where the flying apparatus
P7210057
P7210058
P7210059
P7210060
P7210061
P7210062
P7210063
was working much to everyone's delight.

A short visit to Portugal (on the road to Zamora)
07.22.00
Our time was up in Galicia so it was time to start the drive back to Madrid. Things had
been planned so that we would stop over night in Zamora along the way. This gave us
some time, so we decided to make a detour to see Portugal. Borders being what they are
these days, we were met on the Spanish side with this map
P7220001
of the Spanish side of the border and a speed limit sign
P7220002
and on the Portuguese side with this speed limit sign
P7220003
No one was nearby who might even consider stamping passports or asking what we were
bringing. We drove through 20km of twisty roads through the hills to reach the town
P7220004
of Braganca where the first stop was to relieve
P7220005
ourselves (notice how it rotates to flush)
and all
P7220006
P7220007
P7220008
P7220009
P7220010
P7220011
have a lunch of pizza
P7220016
and salad
P7220015
at the pizza grill
P7220014
(entrega gratuita) while looking out at the fountain
P7220012
and phone booth
P7220013
on the town square.
After lunch, we explored the town starting with the phone booths
P7220017
P7220023
and the fountain
P7220018
P7220019
P7220020
P7220021
P7220022
and then the bank
P7220024
that told us the exchange rates. We looked at this street scene
P7220026
and picked out places for men
P7220025
and women
P7220027
to get their hair cut, stopped to mail our post cards
P7220028
and then headed back to Spain for the drive to Zamora where this guy
P7220029
greeted us at our hotel.
While we
P7220031
P7220032
P7220033
P7220034
P7220035
were having drinks and bread and cheese at the cafe, we ran into the stork's nest
P7220030
P7220036
atop the church near this police station
P7220037
atop this church.
Finally, we watched the sky turn colors
P7220038
P7220039
with the sun as we headed to our dinner including melon com jamon
P7220040
P7220041
(2 views) and gazpacho
P7220042
in the restaurant where the ladies at the next table couldn't believe we would photograph
our food but made it clear that we could not photograph them.
../../Sabbat/Pics/07.23.00SalamancaAndMadrid/
Salamanca and on to Madrid
07.23.00
This was our day to drive from Zamora where we had slept last night to Madrid where we
will sleep for the next 3 nights before catching the plane back to New York and on with
the life we left. On the way we decided to stop in Salamanca where we were greeted by
this statue
P7230001
and then by this one
P7230002
until we found the Plaza Mayor
P7230003
P7230009
where we all
P7230004
P7230005
P7230006
P7230007
P7230008
had lunch. The Plaza (our first of 2 this lucky day) was so impressive that we took
pictures in all directions
P7230010
P7230011
P7230012
P7230013
P7230014
P7230015
P7230020
P7230023
including the restaurant
P7230017
with David still there
P7230016
the postcard store
P7230024
P7230025
and views of Suzanne
P7230018
P7230019
and David and Benjamin
P7230021
P7230022
on the plaza which was to be our first of 2 this day. We took pictures of the commerce as
well including this store
P7230026
that we wanted to have open, these internet cafes
P7230027
P7230028
and this gentleman who posed with Jane
P7230029
And, of course there was the obligatory phone booth picture
P7230030
The walk back to the car took us past this building
P7230031
covered by shells, the remarkable cathedral
P7230032
P7230037
P7230038
P7230039
P7230040
the building opposite it
P7230033
and the street between the buildings
P7230034
not to mention Jane,
P7230035
David and Suzanne,
P7230036
and the statue
P7230041
Next we walked around the main building of the university
P7230042
where we passed views like this
P7230043
P7230046
as we marched through the street of books
P7230044
P7230045
to see the facade of the university
P7230047
P7230048
P7230049
overseen by this statue
P7230050
Like everyone, we craned our necks
P7230051
to try and find the hidden frog. When we finally did, we captured it so that others could
share our experience
P7230052
P7230053
as you watch David and Benjamin walk off into the parking lot
P7230054
After the drive to Madrid, we headed to that city's
P7230056
Plaza Mayor and took pictures
P7230057
P7230058
P7230059
in all directions while noting that this statue
P7230055
of Isabella II guards the plaza. We all sat down for dinner
P7230060
P7230061
P7230062
P7230063
P7230064
served by this kind gentleman
P7230065
but were sorry that Isabella II couldn't guard us some – the cold breezes made this
perhaps the coldest night in Madrid this July.
../../Sabbat/Pics/07.24.00Madrid/
A Day in Madrid
07.24.00
So here we were in Madrid. We hooked up with Jacobo and created an Old Madrid tour
of the city. It was Old Madrid in the sense that it encompassed places that were relevant
to Jacobo and places that were relevant to us when we were here in 1983. Since we're all
getting old and this is Madrid, this constituted a real Old Madrid tour. We began at the
place that had custom made a shirt for me back then
P7240001
and also took a picture of the ham museum (Museo de Jamon)
P7240002
across the street. Next we went into this religious memorabilia store
P7240003
to get a special souvenir for David
P7240037
Then we passed through these turnstiles
P7240004
and passed through this tunnel
P7240005
to wait on this platform
P7240006
and get onto the subway (aka Metro)
P7240008
P7240009
in this direction
P7240007
Our next stop was number 24
P7240010
the house where Jacobo was born and down the street to the shop
P7240011
P7240012
that Naco and Paco run and on further to the school (K-12)
P7240013
P7240014
that Jacobo attended. Along the way, we took the obligatory phone booth picture
P7240015
though Jacobo was actually using the phone in this booth. Then it was on to the Café
Nebraska
P7240016
where Jacobo and Barbara spent their first date. She wasn't there, so we all
P7240017
P7240018
P7240019
P7240020
P7240021
P7240022
were left to enjoy the place, take artistic pictures
P7240023
and ponder the events of the past. Our final stop was at the store
P7240024
that sells the purple liquid. We went in
P7240025
quite happily but discovered that they were out of the green liquid. But it was all right
because we got there their business card
P7240028
in case we need some in the next 17 years. And, Jane was fortunate enough to get some
Giorgio Armani pictures
P7240026
P7240027
for her collection.
Our next stop was lunch. While we were waiting, a passing bird who had already eaten
eliminated part of its lunch on David's arm
P7240029
but thanks to some wipes, his arm
P7240030
returned to its clean state. This guy
P7240038
then served us this gazpacho
P7240031
which made all of us
P7240032
P7240033
P7240034
P7240035
P7240036
happy.
Next we set off for the museum. Along the way, we walked through the park where we
stopped at this playground so that Benjamin could climb,
P7240039
play in the sandbox
P7240041
use the sliding board,
P7240042
P7240049
P7240050
P7240051
P7240052
and rock with Jane
P7240043
P7240044
P7240045
Suzanne watched
P7240040
alone and with Sarah
P7240048
Sarah watched
P7240053
and David watched
P7240046
P7240047
Then, we continued on to the Reina Sofia
P7240054
where the elevators were elegant
P7240055
but they made me check my camera.
On the way back to the hotel, we took a picture of the symbol of Madrid
P7240056
in the Plaza del Sol and recorded the km 0 marker
P7240057
P7240058
of the Spanish road system.
For dinner, we went to a delightful restaurant where this gentleman
P7240071
brought this bread
P7240061
that Benjamin
P7240065
didn't finish and
this salad
P7240062
for Jane
P7240066
and this salad
P7240060
and this chicken
P7240059
for Sarah
P7240064
and this veal
P7240068
for Suzanne
P7240063
and this mushroom dish
P7240069
for David
P7240067
When we were done, he brought this dessert
P7240072
for David, Sarah and Suzanne to share and ice cream like this
P7240073
for Benjamin and Jane. In the process of the meal, we shared this agua
P7240070
con gas.

Madrid – Day 2
07.25.00
This was the last full day of our journey. We were a little road weary and more interested
in being in cafes and doing fun family things than in doing a heavy forced march or a day
of many museums. We brought the newspaper and a book to amuse us
P7250001
P7250002
as well as the letter we were writing (more about that later) but
P7250014
no dog. We walked down our street to the Palacio Real with its nice gardens and this
statue
P7250003
P7250004
in the square. Our first stop was outside
P7250005
the maze
P7250006
which we began to explore
P7250007
P7250008
P7250009
until we got to this tree
P7250010
P7250011
at the center of the maze.
We wanted to go to the playground but after a few minutes
P7250012
this rope came up and we were told we had to go elsewhere because they would be doing
filming. We first explored the statues
P7250013
P7250015
P7250016
P7250017
in the neighborhood. The Palacio Real
P7250018
loomed large so we decided to go there. This was good because they had a sign
P7250019
telling us how to get to the phone booth
P7250020
should we need it.
Our first stop was at the Farmacia
P7250021
which wasn't like the ones we keep seeing on the street. These were the containers
P7250022
for chemicals
P7250023
including Asparagus Officinallis used to make individual remedies. Next we got in line
and waited
P7250024
P7250025
for our guided tour while Suzanne
P7250026
grabbed an extra second
P7250027
of shopping.
We first saw a few ceiling paintings
P7250028
P7250029
P7250032
P7250034
P7250041
and this statue
P7250030
that is a copy and sits below the sign
P7250031
saying that in this room, Spain joined the common market (1986) and this was the room
where the Middle East peace agreement was signed in 1991. The next room had this
chandelier
P7250035
that made Jane nervous
P7250033
maybe because of the ceiling
P7250036
Next it was on to the porcelain room
P7250038
with this remarkable ceiling
P7250037
which made us nervous
P7250039
once more.
Our next stop was the dining room with this table
P7250040
that could seat 145 people. We concluded with a visit to this garish (maybe gaudy?)
room
P7250042
that was used for smoking, the chapel dome
P7250043
and the armeria
P7250044
P7250045
where they would not let us try anything on.
All of this sightseeing made us hungry, so we headed off to the Plaza Mayor. On the way
there, we passed the home office of the Paradores
P7250046
that had defined our trip in Spain. At lunch we managed to take individual pictures in
confused fashion getting too many of some and not enough of others
P7250047
P7250048
P7250049
P7250050
P7250051
and so we invite you to use your imagination to see us all having gazpacho, sandwiches
and salads.
Next we went to this delightful cafe
P7250053
P7250060
across from the Lacoste store
P7250052
where Jane
P7250055
and Benjamin
P7250057
had this nice ice cream
P7250054
while David enjoyed his beer
P7250058
while Sarah
P7250056
waited for her sandwich. We passed our time doing counting surveys of the people
walking by
P7250059
and recording the results on this envelope
P7250061
P7250062
Since the sky
P7250063
was looking very nice, we decided to walk back to the hotel and mail the letter and have
our siesta.
When we got started again, we had to decide where to go for dinner. We saw this place
P7250064
but I guess I now have something in common with Ernest Hemingway. We did go to the
Restaurant Botin as seen by their sangria bottle
P7250071
and by their listing in Guinness as the world's oldest restaurant. Their silverware
P7250072
inspired Jane to take artistic photographs and Suzanne was convinced to have the
specialty of the house
P7250070
roast suckling pig. As you can see, Sarah
P7250065
Jane
P7250068
Benjamin
P7250067
Suzanne
P7250066
and David
P7250069
all enjoyed the meal (or at least all were happy that they would never have to pose for
pictures over dinner again).
After dinner, we stopped at the chocolateria
P7250086
for churros
P7250073
and the thick chocolate drink
P7250074
that is their specialty. The chocolate rush led to various character studies including
Benjamin
P7250075
P7250076
P7250077
P7250078
P7250079
Suzanne
P7250080
P7250081
and Sarah
P7250082
P7250083
We did a good job on the food
P7250084
P7250085
as you can see.
../../Sabbat/Pics/07.26.00ReturnningHome/
Returning Home
07.26.00
The proverbial last day of the trip came. It had been a wonderful experience but now it
was time to go to the airport and catch the flight back home.
We all got to the airport and completed all of the procedures to get through Spanish
passport control and into the no man's land that lies between Spain and the plane. This
left us all enthusiastic
P7260001
P7260002
P7260003
P7260004
P7260005
so we went to the bar to catch some food
P7260006
and this gentleman
P7260007
was kind enough to take this family picture
P7260008
Then the time came to board the moving ramp
P7260009
and head forward
P7260010
happily
P7260011
with our remaining worldly possessions
P7260012
to catch a first glimpse of the plane
P7260013
that we would board through this gate
P7260015
after processing this long line
P7260014
When we arrived in Princeton, we found an incredibly warm reception waiting for us
with balloons and kind notes from friends. Unfortunately the camera was inaccessible, so
the warmth of the greeting will just be in our hearts.
../../Sabbat/BetsyMattWedding/
Four Days in Baltimore
It was the weekend of Betsy and Matt's wedding, so we drove to Baltimore to join in the
revelry.
08.04.00
The first event we attended was the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding. We
had dinner with Larry
P8050001
and Janet
P8050002
who must have been jetlagged because they couldn't keep their eyes open. JonMarens
P8050003
was in better spirits as was Paige
P8050004
and Gregory was bubbling with laughter
P8050005
which distracted Suzanne's face
P8050006
away from the camera. This amused Sarah
P8050007
and David
P8050010
but seemed to make Jane
P8050008
and Benjamin
P8050009
nervous though they thought their roll
P8050013
looked just fine.
Fran
P8050011
and Dick
P8050012
looked like proud parents of the bride as Sylvia greeted Marty from Chicago
P8050014
Florence
P8050015
was happy as Harry posed with the bride to be
P8050016
and Reva
P8050017
engaged Janet in conversation. But perhaps, Matt and his pals
P8050018
were having the best time of all as many of the Dobkin women posed together
P8050019
which brought a strange expression to Dan's face
P8050020
After dinner there were the speeches by Dick
P8050021
which Michelle and Jason
P8050022
watched with great interest, then by Sylvia
P8050023
Michelle
P8050024
and Tricia
P8050025
Finally Betsy and Matt
P8050026
talked about how happy they were to be here and we all went off to rest up for the main
event.
08.05.00
The next morning, we ran into Sylvia
P8050027
on her way to the beauty parlor and got the before picture before her driver came
P8050028
We went off to explore a little of the Inner Harbor pausing to admire the Bromo Seltzer
P8050029
clock before running into Larry
P8050030
at the aquarium where his group clutched their tickets
P8050031
and we had a group effort to celebrate JonMarens'
P8050032
birthday which can still be represented on less than 6 complete hands. This kept us
amused until Jason
P8050033
arrived to get his ticket. Of course, seeing the aquarium kept them from seeing the real
sights of the harbor
P8050034
and the waterfall
P8050035
you could walk through and the statue of Thurgood Marshall
P8050036
This led up to the main event, so Benjamin put on his tux
P8050037
David put on his suit
P8050038
and Jane showed Benjamin how to walk down the aisle
P8050039
so he could practice in the parking lot
P8050040
We had some photo ops outside the church
P8050041
P8050042
P8050043
P8050044
before Benjamin went in to the church
P8050045
to get his pillow
P8050046
While we were waiting, we greeted Barbara,
P8050047
Eric,
P8050048
Larry,
P8050049
Dan alone,
P8050050
and with Sylvia,
P8050051
Suzanne
P8050052
Paige and JonMarens,
P8050053
and Betsy and Michelle
P8050054
before zooming in on the bride
P8050055
and her mother
P8050056
Benjamin and the flower girl got ready
P8050057
and had a practice step
P8050058
before they hit the aisle
P8050059
in front of the bride on her Dad's arm
P8050060
P8050061
P8050062
until she joined Matt at the front of the church
P8050063
P8050064
P8050065
P8050066
while the best man helped the priest get the rings ready
P8050067
and then they were married
P8050068
P8050069
P8050070
and lit the candles of life
P8050071
as the bridesmaids
P8050072
watched, Michelle got ready to step in
P8050073
and Benjamin played with the pillow
P8050074
After a final blessing
P8050075
they walked out as husband and wife
P8050076
followed by the ring bearer and flower girl
P8050077
Outside the church, the crowds gathered
P8050078
P8050079
and the wedding party waited
P8050080
so that the bubbles could be blown.
Benjamin practiced
P8050081
P8050082
P8050083
cousin Rachel (without the beard) taught Aunt Florence to blow bubbles
P8050084
P8050085
and anticipation increased
P8050086
until they
P8050087
appeared.
On the way to the reception, we ran into the photographers who needed Benjamin to
complete these pictures
P8050088
P8050089
P8050090
Inside, we captured Jason and Michelle
P8050091
JonMarens and Paige
P8050092
Toba and Emily
P8050100
and Toba, Ellen and Emily
P8050101
We also took some possible campaign photos for LaHabra'2000
P8050093
P8050094
P8050095
before the photographers
P8050099
decided to take group pictures of all of us and this kind woman
P8060104
helped us take our own pictures
P8050096
P8050097
P8050098
Next it was time to dance, so Benjamin and Sarah hit the floor
P8060102
P8060103
but they were overshadowed when people started to be hoisted up on chairs. First Betsy
and Matt
P8060105
P8060106
then Dick and Fran
P8060107
P8060108
P8060109
then Pat and Joe
P8060110
P8060111
P8060112
and Sylvia
P8060113
P8060114
P8060115
P8060116
08.06.00
Brunch the next day began with a campaign picture
P8060117
followed by the people at our table Jane
P8060118
Sarah
P8060119
Michelle
P8060120
Jason
P8060121
Benjamin
P8060122
David (who was still blurry from the night before)
P8060123
and Suzanne
P8060124
Afterwards, there were the family pictures
P8060125
P8060126
and then Larry, Suzanne and Toba got into their conversation
P8060127
P8060128
but Gregory moved too fast to be captured on film
P8060129
until he found the potted palm
P8060130
We said our last good byes
P8060131
and headed for the pool where this woman
P8060133
took this family photo
P8060132
and we took another campaign picture
P8060134
Next we went to dinner at this fancy restaurant
P8070143
with a dress code
P8070135
As you can see, Sylvia
P8070136
Dan,
P8070137
Benjamin,
P8070138
Sarah,
P8070139
Suzanne
P8070140
Jane,
P8070141
and David
P8070142
passed the test.
The pasta
P8070144
P8070145
dishes were good and the dessert
P8070146
was even better.
08.07.00
The next morning we started in the lobby
P8070147
P8070148
and eventually marched
P8070001
into town past these pickets
P8070002
to the Science Museum where Benjamin did his fireman thing
P8070003
leading all 3 kids to do a family portrait
P8070004
We had lunch at Johnny Rockets where we had a girl booth
P8070005
and a boy booth
P8070006
and admired the straw dispensers
P8070007
Next we went to rent paddle boats
P8070009
in full regalia
P8070008
Suzanne and Sarah
P8070011
pedaled away
P8070010
while Jane and David were getting salad dressing samples from this man
P8070012
For dinner, we went to this old restaurant
P8080013
where everyone looked a little tired
P8080014
P8080015
P8080016
P8080017
P8080018
P8080019
P8080020
and this gentleman
P8080021
brought us dinner including this Reuben-less sandwich,
P8080022
this Caesar salad,
P8080023
and this cranberry juice
P8080024
with internet humor to boot.
08.08.00
On Tuesday morning, we went to this place for breakfast
P8080036
P8080037
where Suzanne
P8080025
had coffee from this large mug
P8080032
Jane
P8080026
Dan
P8080027
Sylvia
P8080028
Sarah
P8080029
Benjamin
P8080030
and David
P8080031
enjoyed the service of this waitress named Sarah
P8080033
and we liked the mugs
P8080034
but no one liked Benjamin's pancakes
P8080035
../../Sabbat/SamBarMitzvah/
Sam's Bar Mitzvah
09.16.00
We got in the car and went to Sam's Bar Mitzvah. When we got there, we wanted to
remember where we had parked
P9160001
In the elevator, we ran into the Angermans
P9160002
and then we saw the Hyman's
P9160003
P9160008
at the reception.
Jane liked the hors d'oeuvres
P9160004
as did Benjamin
P9160005
while Sarah watched
P9160006
At times things were moving too quickly for the camera
P9160007
P9160018
but not when Suzanne and Marilyn did their dance thing
P9160009
P9160010
P9160013
with Benjamin
P9160021
as he accumulated balloons
P9160011
as did the Bar Mitzvah boy
P9160016
P9160017
P9160020
and his sister
P9160023
in a nice scene
P9160019
overseen by the DJ
P9160012
and the people started to accumulate at our table
for a few rounds of photos
P9160014
P9160015

P9160032
P9160033
P9160034
P9160035

P9160037
Then Suzanne decided to take pictures of the crowd
P9160038
P9160039
P9160040
P9160041
before the dancing started again
P9160042
P9160043
P9160044
P9160045
P9160046
P9160047
and the balloons got better
P9160048
P9160049
as the dancing continued
P9160050
P9160051
P9160052
P9160053
including these very rare photos
P9160054
P9160055
Things started going very fast
P9160056
P9160063
as the crowds gathered
P9160057
P9160058
P9160059
P9160060
P9160061
under the balloons
P9160062
for the limbo contest
P9160064
P9160065
P9160066
Next we danced a wicked Macerana
P9160067
P9160068
P9160069
P9160070
P9160071
P9160072
took a picture in the bathroom

and took the elevator

back to our car

got us into a rental car, we were able to make our way to Oakland and take this picture of Suzanne and her parents
PA220003
Everyone was glad to see us return. Sarah called a friend

PA220014
moved so fast that she got dizzy and had to make chocolate chip cookies to recover.

A trip to California
11.08.00
I flew into California on Wednesday. Jacobo
PB080001
came to my hotel to pick me up and showed that his beaten down old Honda is even older
than my beaten down old Honda. Barbara
PB080002
joined us for dinner as well.
11.09.00
The next morning, we got up bright and earlier – earlier than we would have liked thanks
to the smoke alarm at the hotel. Marsha led the way
PB090003
into Hobbee's where this gentleman
PB090004
brought my tofu scramble
PB090005
complete with their famous blueberry coffee cake and exceedingly strong cinnamon tea.
After a break, I went to Portal where they gave me this
badge
PortalBadge
and let me in to see John Little
PB090006
and hear about the exciting things happening there while
drinking this water
PortalWater
My next stop was Network
Appliances where this woman
PB090007
was kind enough to give me this badge
NetAppTKBadge
so that I could see Tom Kessler
PB090008
and drink this Snapple
NetAppTKSnapple
After finishing with Tom, I admired the company flags
PB090009
and sculptures
PB090010
before heading across the street to this establishment
PB090011
where this gentleman
PB090014
prepared coffee for Peter
PB090012
and Marsha
PB090013
We returned across the street to Network Appliances
and got new badges
NetAppDWBadge
that let us see Dan Warmenhoven in a
variety of poses, first in cardboard
PB090015
then in front of the company's logo
PB090016
and finally in front of their products
PB090017
Along the way, I drank this water
NetAppDWWater
We left after dark and I followed their car
PB090018
back to Palo Alto.
11.10.00
Friday morning, Kai Li
PB100019
came to the hotel for breakfast. Being a real Silicon Valley type, he was required to make a call on his cell phone
PB100020
during the meal. After the meal, it was time to say good bye to the hotel
PB100021
and to the friendly valet parking attendant
PB100022
so that we could go to building 3
PB100023
which is where the WebTV people
PB100024
live at Microsoft's Silicon Valley campus. This woman
PB100025
was kind enough to give me this badge
MicrosoftBadge
so that we could go to lunch at Phil Goldman's favorite Mexican restaurant. Phil
PB100026
and Marsha
PB100027
were kind enough to pose for pictures as I enjoyed the chips
PB100028
and veggie burrito
PB100029
After lunch, Marsha was nice enough to take the obligatory phone booth pictures
PB100030
PB100031
My time in the Bay Area was almost over, so I brought the rental car
PB100032
back to Hertz
PB100033
and followed the signs
PB100034
to the shuttle bus
PB100035
to the signs leading to Gate 16.
PB100036
But first, I had to go through security
PB100037
where this woman
PB100038
was kind enough to ask me to try out my camera. Once at Gate 16, I queued up
PB100039
so that this woman
PB100040
could give me my boarding card
PB100041
and I could prepare to board this plane
PB100042
in the third group. When I got to San Diego, I was happy to see DanSyl
PB100043
at the gate. We had dinner at which I drank this beer
DanSylBeer
and then called it a day.
11.11.00
The next day, Larry came to visit and brought too much light with him
PB110044
Once we got him into a darker environment
PB110046
it was also possible to greet Janet
PB110045
and then we all sat down to lunch where the vegetables
PB110047
were good and the soup
PB110048
was even better. As you can see from the faces
PB110049
PB110050
PB110051
and hands
PB110052
of those gathered, everyone was too busy enjoying the meal to put on their favorite smile. When we finished, there was one lonely piece of potato kugel
PB110053
left. This inspired Larry to try his hand at photography taking pictures of Janet
PB110054
PB110055
PB110056
PB110058
Sylvia
PB110057
and even me
PB110059
PB110060
After lunch, we decided to play bridge. I spent a lot of time with my cards like this
PB110061
acting the part of the dummy. And my score
PB110062
showed it. Larry got us into his car
PB110063
and we headed to La Jolla to look at the apartment
PB110064
complex
PB110065
where Dansyl are planning to move. The place even has
PB110066
valet parking. The agent led us into the apartment
PB110067
which unfortunately gets light and noise from the portico
PB110068
but has a beautiful shower
PB110069
and nice closets
PB110070
where you could take a picture of yourself off the mirrors. The kitchen had opportunities for great photographic effects
PB110071
PB110072
PB110073
Next we took the elevator to floor 21 where the view of the Mormon church
PB110074
is something to behold as was the dining room
PB110075
which was overseen by these pleasant waiters
PB110076
PB110077
Next we headed off to see Aunt Anne
PB110079
and Uncle Irv
PB110078
and Robin and Linda
PB110080
Once we were all assembled, we went downstairs for dinner. Everyone else recommended this mixed drink
PB110081
so I tried it. Larry
PB110082
Janet
PB110083
Linda
PB110084
Anne
PB110085
Rob
PB110086
Dan
PB110087
Sylvia
PB110088
and Irv
PB110090
all enjoyed being served by Nicole
PB110089
our waitress for the evening. Sylvia's fish
PB110091
was more photogenic than my portobello mushroom lasagna and so it is the final picture I took on the trip.

Lucy's birthday celebration
11.17.00
On Lucy's actual birthday, I had lunch with Kathy Rohrer
PB170092
at Triumph where the menu has taken a definite change for the
worse.
11.19.00
Our celebration took place 2 days later at
PB190093
PB190094
where the birthday party looked like this
PB190095
as we posed for the obligatory group photo
PB190096
and ignored best advice
PB190097
PB190098
and went into the restaurant where we were greeted
by these people
PB190099
Once inside, we quickly became reacquainted with David
Friday
PB190100
PB190101
PB190102
who sat with the girls for a few more pictures
PB190103
PB190104

wasn't as attentive as David had been.
though he did bring extra olives
PB190107
for the salad.
PB190106
and a birthday cake
PB190109
for Lucy
PB190108
He brought the wrong check
PB190110
and then the right check
PB190111
so that we could go take pictures of Rosemary

Thanksgiving in the (almost) new millennium
11.21.00
It all began when we met Larry
PB210001
PB210002
at the dinky station and brought him home. Before we knew it, the door bell rang and Janet and Gregory
PB210003
had arrived. Janet was still in motion as you can see. This excited Jane
PB210004
into total chaos. A trip to Newark airport brought back Sylvia
PB210005
and Dan
PB210006
and the person called Dansyl
PB210007
11.22.00
Unfortunately for me, fortunately for you, I lost track of the camera for the next 24 hours but found it in time to record the arrival of
Fran
PB220008
and Dick
PB220009
who was equally excited and just as hyper. Michelle
PB220010
added some civility to the crowd by getting involved in an Uno game which excited Benjamin
PB220011
and brought Fran
PB220012
back to life until Dick
PB220013
started doing his hoser imitation. Sylvia
PB220014
had an excellent hand and Jane started to help her
PB220015
which brought Gregory out with his clementines
PB220016
to do his shaking
PB220017
and then the pizza came
PB220018
and Betsy and Matt
PB220019
arrived which made Matt just as excited
PB220020
and so out of focus.
The gang departed
PB220021
PB220022
PB220023
PB220024
PB220025
partly in focus, partly out of focus.
This caused Sarah to climb on Jane’s back
PB220026
and the rest of us called it a day.
11.23.00
The next day was the main event. Thanksgiving day at last. We awoke to a quiet room
PB230027
adorned with the turkeys from the last Princeton Thanksgiving
PB230028
with Dan reading the newspaper
PB230029
and Benjamin watching the television
PB230030
while Suzanne cooked
PB230031
and Sarah slowly woke up
PB230032
We got our shirts on and modeled them
PB230033
in various combinations
PB230034
while waiting for the game to begin.
There were the usual pre-game photos of the assembled
PB230035
PB230036
PB230037
PB230038
PB230039
PB230040
PB230041
PB230042
PB230043
after which the Kramers arrived
PB230044
PB230045
each taller than the other. This was our cue to begin the pilgrimage to the field.
PB230046
PB230047
PB230048
PB230049
PB230050
Betsy and Dan did a wonderful job of capturing the action in the following series of photos

After the walk home, the girls celebrated on the couch
PB230070
with the newlyweds
PB230071
while the men chatted
PB230072
Before long, it was time for the turkey construction contest
PB230073
PB230074
PB230075
PB230076
PB230077
All contestants had a chance to present their results starting with Janet
PB230078
PB230079
with a brief interlude when Jason arrived
PB230080
fresh from the Atlanta half-marathon. Then Gregory showed his stuff

and Paige arrived
PB230099
carrying some Kudos/Snickers bars
PB230100
Caroline came with a bottle of wine
PB230101
and suggested that we take pictures of all the shoes by the door

Betsy and Matt
PB230107
Dick
PB230111
and Gregory
PB230110
were watching the football game
PB230112
while the turkey cooled
PB230113
and was removed from its pan
PB230114
and placed elsewhere
PB230115
while a game of Uno continued
PB230116
and Paige had the best hand
PB230117
Jane recorded Larry’s efforts at carving the turkey

During the meal, we noticed Jason
PB230001.2
going back for seconds
PB230002.2
which looked good as the Jans observed
PB230003.2
PB230004.2
Benjamin found a new form of amusement

PB230006.2
PB230007.2
PB230008.2
PB230009.2
PB230010.2
and Dick told Dan a story
PB230011.2
that didn't seem to amuse Paige. But eventually, she sprung to
action
PB230012.2
and moved back into the frame
PB230013.2
as she and Jan began to do magic, no doubt
PB230014.2
PB230015.2
and Dick went back to his story
PB230016.2
while Jason and Michelle went back for still more
PB230017.2
Larry laughed
PB230018.2
until he shook
PB230019.2
and Benjamin continued his rounds
PB230020.2
as the turkey melted
PB230021.2
and the flowers shone
PB230022.2
PB230023.2
PB230024.2
in the void
PB230025.2
causing David to ponder
PB230026.2

that it was time for dessert

Next came Friday. Some people went to Atlantic City. Some went shopping but
everyone converged at Palmer Square
PB240035
to watch Sarah and her friends in the choir
PB240036
PB240037
PB240038
PB240039
sing to the tree
PB240040
Betsy and Matt
PB240041
Dick, Fran and Jon
PB240042
Larry, Janet and Gregory
PB240043
and Jane
PB240045
all seemed to be enjoying themselves as Gregory did his eyeball trick
PB240044
as Janet watched
PB240046
and so did Larry
PB240047
Joyce and Sarah posed for the final pictures
PB240048
PB240049
and we headed off to dinner.

To Pittsburgh for Xmas
12.23.00
Christmas was coming, so we got into the car and headed west before the snows came. On the way there, we stopped at Sideling Hill where we took the obligatory phone booth picture
PC230001
and this picture of the Big Boy status
PC230005
Our server, Majueska
PC230002
was nice enough to deliver up these 2 doses of their grub
PC230003
PC230004
On arriving in Pittsburgh, we went to More's where the food was better
as was the company. Jane was stunned by the speed of Sarah's hand
PC230006
Suzanne was her usual cheerful self
PC230007
Milt was ready for his meal
PC230008
as were Norma
PC230011
and Sarah
PC230012
Benjamin had already started his roll
PC230013
and David was particularly happy to not be driving
PC230014
We were pleasantly surprised to see Hillary
PC230009
and Lester Smith
PC230010
at the next table.
12.25.00
We began Christmas day with some out of focus pictures of Suzanne and Sarah
PC250015
Milt
PC250016
and Norma
PC250017
at the Gespass'es before heading to Sally's
PC250018
for the main event.
George was there
PC250019
as was Suzanne
PC250020
Jane and Katie posed for group pictures
PC250021
PC250022
which caused Jane to sprout extra arms
PC250023
to the amusement of Adele and Milt.
PC250024
This caused generations of the Auerbach women to congregate on the couch
PC250025
PC250026
to watch Sarah think
PC250027
and Sam rejoice
PC250028
because he knew Robert was coming soon.
PC250029
PC250030
Again, Sam rejoiced
PC250031
as Sarah and Katie
PC250032
played cranium.
12.26.00
The next day, we prepared for our departure. Milt
PC260033
engaged Suzanne
PC260034
in conversation while Sarah and Jane compared heights
PC260035
PC260036
Once in the car, Jane did experiments with CD cover photography
PC260037
PC260040
PC260041
and random shots of the car's interior
PC260038
PC260039
PC260042
PC260047
until we stopped at this gas station
PC260045
and had to have a picture of this sign
PC260043
PC260044
PC260046
We concluded our photo session with a montage of photos of Sarah cleaning the windows in preparation for her driving experience the next day
PC260048
PC260049
PC260050
PC260051
PC260052
PC260053
PC260054
PC260055

including these that are meant to be artistic

../../Sabbat/DevonBatMitzvah/
On to Devon Wohl's Bat Mitzvah
01.05.01
We had decided to go to Devon's Bat Mitzvah, so we weren't worried when we saw the snow
P1050001
all over the cars
P1050002
and the questionable road conditions
P1050003
We got our start but had to stop here
P1050004
so that Benjamin could use their facilities.
The drive through New Jersey was slow. We gained some speed in Delaware and when we got to this place
P1050005
in Maryland, we were ready to eat after we took the obligatory phone booth
picture
P1050006
David chose Pizza Hut
P1050007
everyone else chose Burger King
P1050008
where Kris served up this meal
P1050009
We bought some Hershey's kisses from this gentleman
P1050010
for the ride onward. And, no trip would be complete without a stop at Starbucks
P1050011
for many cups of high test
P1050012
Before we knew it, we were at the hotel and into our room. The phone rang and we got into the elevator
P1050013
pushed the button
P1050014
and there was Bart
P1050015
along with Calista's family
P1050016
and his family
P1050017
P1050019
and Jane and Devon got a chance to visit
P1050018
01.06.01
The next day, we saw this great license plate
P1060020
at the synagogue
here it is blown up
After the service, there was an afternoon break, so Suzanne went to the Talbot's Outlet
P1060021
David bought batteries for the camera at Radio Shack
P1060022
and we got takeout lunch from this guy
P1060023
On the way back, we noticed that the car looked good
P1060025
parked in front of our accommodations
P1060024
though we thought we should have been staying here
P1060026
Once at the party,
P1060038
Jane and Devon hooked up with friends
P1060027
David found the bar tender
P1060028
P1060029
Bart hooked up with his Air Force buddies
P1060030
and we
P1060034
P1060035
P1060036
settled in for dinner with the Smith's
P1060031
P1060032
P1060033
when this gentleman came and took our picture
P1060037
Next, they assembled some parents with children
P1060039
P1060040
for the toilet paper wrapping contest
P1060041
Our team got started
P1060042
P1060043
P1060044
P1060045
and things were looking good
P1060046
P1060047
P1060048
P1060049
P1060050
even with these candid shots
P1060051
P1060052
P1060053
but we didn't win.
Next it was time for the candle lighting
P1060054
while Benjamin waited to rev up for dancing
P1060055
the cake awaited us
P1060056
and the children played with the remains of the contest
P1060057
Devon's cousins read her a poem
P1060058
Bart and Calista lit the first candle
P1060059
then came the uncle from Austin
P1060060
and eventually Jane and another friend
P1060061
P1060062
until all were lit
P1060063
and then blown out
P1060064
Now Benjamin was really ready to dance but he went too fast
P1060065
P1060066
P1060067
until he came crashing down with his guitar
P1060068
Sarah taught Jane how to make a remembrance cup
P1060069
that they explained to Devon
P1060070
and then gave to her
P1060071
01.07.01
Next day, we got back in the car and headed for home where there was still snow on the driveway

A day in My life
01.11.01
It was January 11 (1/11) and I decided to record many aspects of my day to see just how profound my life is. It began with breakfast where the girls were reading
P1110017
and Benjamin was watching television
P1110018
Daniel arrived for a ride to school
P1110022
and Jane got up to let him in
P1110021
I dropped Jane off at school
P1110023
and found the road blocked on my way to work
P1110024
so I walked towards the main campus
P1110025
through the arches
P1110026
to Nassau Hall
P1110027
for the C/3 meeting which was too private to allow photography.
On the way back, I saw this man in the ground talking on his cell phone
P1110028
while his pal dug up the joint
P1110029
Ginnie greeted me
P1110030
then Michele arrived
P1110031
and I talked to Brian
P1110032
until Tom came to audit us
P1110033
(he won't get far, we have pictures ... )
Amit came by
P1110034
to plan COS 111 and then Michele returned from lunch
P1110035
At the appropriate time, I went to the car
P1110036
and drove to Newark airport
P1110037
where I parked in lot B9
P1110038
and followed the signs to Terminal B
P1110039
looking for the El Al flight
P1110040
that was late
P1110041
These people
P1110042
felt that they had to block the obligatory phone booth picture
P1110043
and then I watched people arrive forever
P1110044
after the guard had told me I could not take pictures.
01.12.01
The next day, I took a morning picture of Jane
P1120045
and then thought better of recording yet another day in the life of ...
../../Sabbat/01.15.01MLKAssembly/
The Martin Luther King Birthday celebration
01.15.01
It was Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and we also celebrated Jane's honorable mention in the essay contest celebrating his birthday.
We began by recording mother and daughter as we got ready to go
P1150058
The auditorium was set for the event
P1150059
as they set up the awards table
P1150060
and the steel band played
P1150061
P1150062
P1150063
after which Bob Durkee came up
P1150064
to start the awards. First it was the kids who did the posters
P1150065
then Jane got her award
P1150066
and Janet Dickerson spoke
P1150067
we ended with 2 pictures of the award winner with her parents
P1150068
P1150069
Here is the certificate that Jane got
JaneCert
and here is the text of her essay

February 2, 2001 -- A Cruise Day with DrLen
02.02.01
It was the last day before the new semester started, so I decided to drive to Philadelphia and get off the expressway at the parkway
P2020016
I drove through the light at Spring Garden Street
P2020017
and parked the car
P2020018
near Fairmount Avenue
P2020019
in sight of the prison
P2020020
I walked down to Mt. Vernon
P2020021
got to 2140
P2020022
and knocked on the pig's nose
P2020023
until DrLen answered
P2020024
but he was still working
P2020025
and his computer was still on
P2020026
We quickly read a map
P2020027
and took the Ben Franklin Bridge
P2020028
P2020029
to New Jersey.
Our first notable thing was this sign that the dentists provided
P2020030
P2020031
we had to turn around here
P2020032
to find our way
to Wacker's
P2020033
P2020034
where there were some fine lamps.
Next we turned around after this house
P2020035
with DrLen steady on the wheel
P2020036
to go to the Den of Antiquity
P2020037
where this gentleman
P2020038
told us that despite the wonderful things in the window
P2020039
it was probably not open
P2020040
So we drove on through the fields
P2020041
and past the wildlife
P2020042
until we parked the car
P2020043
at the 54 Diner
P2020044
P2020045
where DrLen
P2020046
carefully studied the menu
P2020047
and we heeded this all important sign
P2020048
My food was so good that I forgot to take a picture
until it was gone
P2020049
The waitress was happy to have her picture be part of our record
P2020050
even though we interrupted an impassioned discussion of the tabloid article about what the people on Survivor do when they are off the screen.
Our next stop was at the musical sculptures
P2020051
P2020052
P2020053
P2020054
outside Ralph's
P2020055
After a visit with Ralph (in a situation that was too bizarre to be photographed) we took a few more pictures
P2020056
P2020057
P2020058
and headed back to Rte. 40 in search of KingFish
P2020059
where the signs were great
P2020060
P2020061
P2020062
P2020063
P2020064
Next we headed to Richland and observed the general store
P2020065
from in front of the post office
P2020066
before going behind the post office to the Antique Depot
P2020067
We still had another stop (or more) inside but when we next parked, we saw a wonderful painted truck parked nearby
P2020068
P2020070
next to a propane tank
P2020069
with a fire engine off to the side
P2020071
DrLen had to use the cel phone to call Neil Benson
P2020072
to see if we should buy this typewriter
P2020074
from this lady.
P2020073
As always, the typewriter didn't look as good when we got to the parking lot
P2020075
Driving on, we came upon the Wall of Shame -- an unfortunate memorial to a man's son who was killed (with 2 of his friends) by a driver of an unlicensed garbage truck.
P2020076
We acknowledged the wrong doings of this large slate of people
P2020077
P2020078
P2020079
P2020080
said our good byes
P2020081
and took some literature to read as we moved along to Vineland
P2020082
where the laundromat was closed
P2020083
but the toy store
P2020084
P2020085
P2020086
looked open, so we parked the car and took the obligatory phone booth
pictures
P2020087
P2020088
only to discover that the owner
P2020089
was too busy doing day trading to talk to us.
On the way out of town, we found this real sculpture
P2020090
P2020091
P2020092

floss and all in front of the dentists' offices.
We stopped here for custard
P2020094
but they don't sell it int he winter, sow e had to settle for this
P2020095
and then get some gas for the trip home
P2020096
I left my mark in DrLen's car.
P2020097
Hopefully, it will fade well over time to remind us of this day in the country.

Benjamin's Birthday party
04.10.01
It was Benjamin's birthday party time and we all came out to help him celebrate. Sarah
P4100001
brought a book to help pass the time.
Suzanne
P4100006
posed in front of the refreshment stand and Jane and Kaylen
P4100002
played a warmup game of air hockey. The rules of the day were explained carefully
P4100007
and then everyone was ready to do the first activity which was video games. Abe and Will
P4100003
were clustered at the driving machines while Ian
P4100008
tried to get started. Ben and Matt were playing hockey
P4100004
P4100005
then air hockey
P4100009
when Kurren stepped into the hockey game
P4100010
making Ben go at full force
P4100011
as the game progressed
P4100012
and Nate joined the drivers
P4100013
while Kaylen and Jane watched
P4100014
and Sarah and Jane got their drinks
P4100015
and Benjamin and Kurren
P4100016
settled on a new game
P4100018
which got Benjamin going
P4100019
and attracted a crowd
P4100020
until it was time to walk over
P4100017
to the miniature golf, activity 2.
This started with some wild swings
P4100021
before Benjamin and Nate traded tips
P4100022
that seemed to improve their games
P4100023
and Jane did her classic golfer pose.
The third activity was soccer where the kids ran the field
P4100024
P4100025
P4100026
P4100027
P4100028
P4100029
P4100030
and eventually Benjamin got to play goalie
P4100031
P4100032
At last, it was time for the cake
P4100033
The candles were lit
P4100034
and deep breaths were taken
P4100035
Once they were out, the party continued
P4100036
until we said good bye to the sign
P4100037
that defined the day.
../../Sabbat/04.04.01BenjaminsBirthday/
Benjamin's birthday party
03.11.01
It was Benjamin's birthday party and so we pulled out the digital camera to start to record the event. We found a few reminder pictures from Jane's Bat Mitzvah
P3110001
P3110003
04.04.01
But this was really about Benjamin's birthday. Sarah modeled her new glasses
P4040004
Melissa was there
P4040005
P4040013
and so were Jane
P4040006
and Suzanne
P4040008
P4040012
P4040015
Benjamin first modeled his hat
P4040007
and then worked it up his head
P4040009
for a full facial
P4040010
before showing off the party paraphernalia
P4040011
We opened the first present
P4040016
with this card from Andy
P4040014
By the way, here are his new glasses in their case
P4040017
After the interlude, there was this card from Josephine
P4040018
with this present
P4040019
Then the cake
P4040020
appeared
and Benjamin took a deep breath
P4040021
and started blowing
P4040022
until only one
P4040023
and then no
P4040024
candle was lit.
SO, it was time to open the next card
P4040025
which was quite nice
P4040026
from Melissa
P4040027
Next was the card from Aunt Anne and Uncle Irv
P4040029
P4040030
and the check from Grandma and Dan
P4040032
and the birthday letter from Dr. Ginsburg
P4040033
Then there were the final presents
P4040034
the Lego held by Suzanne
P4040035
the remaining wrapping paper
P4040036
the Wacky Factory
P4040038
and the package from L L Bean
P4040039
The party was over and all that remained were the memories
P4040040
../../Sabbat/04.18.01SarahBirthday/
Sarah's Birthday
04.18.01
It was Sarah's birthday so we decorated the door
P4180001
got party hats
P4180002
and got her in the mood for the occasion
P4180003
as the balloons flew towards the ceiling
P4180004
There was, I suppose, cause for celebration
P4180005
since Sarah now has a new form of ID and a lot of powers. This seemed to make Suzanne
P4180006
quite happy though Benjamin
P4180007
didn't seem quite so sure and Jane
P4180008
reverted to her party animal personality. The cake
P4180009
look good as we lit the candles
P4180010
P4180011
and Sarah rose to the challenge
P4180012
04.20.01
Two days later, the celebration continued
P4200013
P4200014
P4200015
with the cards hung from the ceiling
P4200016
as the first friends arrived
P4200017
P4200018
and Benjamin prepared to do his dance
P4200019
P4200020
while Suzanne
P4200021
made the salad.
We did the cake ritual once more
P4200022
P4200023
and again Sarah rose to the challenge
P4200024
P4200025
as her friends assembled
P4200026
P4200027
P4200028
to watch the cake get cut
P4200029
so that they could eat it
P4200030
P4200031
as Suzanne made sure that everything was all right.
P4200032
P4200033
../../Sabbat/04.21-22.01AprilWeekend/
A weekend in April
04.21.01
It was a busy weekend. The weather was very cooperative and there were many things planned. I took Benjamin to soccer
P4210001
where he got his new team shirt
P4210002
P4210003
P4210004
and got ready to play
P4210005
P4210006
P4210007
P4210008
as the other parents
P4210009
watched the game. And the coaches got them revved for action
P4210010
P4210011
in a game that they were to win 3-0.
Next we went to Panera for lunch. Benjamin had the turkey sandwich
P4210012
which he really enjoyed
P4210013
and I had cappuccino
P4210014
with my sprout sandwich
P4210015
all at a reasonable price.
P4210016
We came back home and picked up Sarah
P4210017
and followed this car
P4210018
through the traffic
P4210019
until we could leave Sarah and Joyce
P4210020
P4210021
P4210022
off at Macy's.
We then headed back to the car wash which had already started
P4210023
with the girls trying to lure in customers
P4210024
P4210025
We gave him
P4210026
our five dollars and got in line. Jane was there
P4210027
as were Kaylen
P4210028
and her mother
P4210029
P4210030
P4210031
P4210032
and father
P4210035
P4210033
P4210034
They got started on our car
P4210036
P4210037
while Cindy George watched
P4210038
and Caroline Williams drove up
P4210039
P4210040
while Jane and Kaylen had their lunch
P4210041
Next, Jan Woods arrived
P4210042
in the 70 PEDE
P4210043
causing Lucy
P4210044
great joy.
All this while, there was progress on the Honda
P4210045
P4210046
P4210047
P4210048
P4210049
even though Chris sometimes was washing people's shoes
P4210050
P4210051
The car has never seen this much soap
P4210052
P4210053
Kaylen celebrated
P4210054
the new shine on the car
P4210055
as the crowd cheered
P4210056
and we headed off to the drying station
P4210057
P4210058
Our final stop was at McCaffery's
P4210059
P4210060
where Fernando
P4210061
rang us up while Joe
P4210062
bagged our groceries.
04.22.01
We waited until Sunday to start eating the food from McCaffery's. Benjamin
P4220063
and Jane
P4220064
had bagels and Suzanne
P4220065
settled for Poland Springs. We still had remnants
P4220066
of the celebration and a clean car
P4220067
so Suzanne was ready
P4220068
to climb aboard
P4220069
for the trip to Parking Space 368
P4220070
where we paid for parking
P4220071
but couldn't read the ticket screen
P4220072
in the glare, so we approached the station
P4220073
where this woman
P4220074
asked that I not take her picture. (Sorry!!!)
We looked down the track
P4220075
to see if a train was coming, but we were in
P4220076
for a little longer until the sign
P4220077
started to blink and we could get into this car
P4220078
to travel past
P4220079
through Penn Station
P4220080
in Newark until we finally got off
P4220081
at Penn Station in New York.
Dick and Fran
P4220082
were there so we walked down to the village to watch the chess games
P4220083
P4220084
and be inspired by Gandhi
P4220085
on our way to the world's most famous schoolyard basketball court
P4220086
P4220087
We stopped for a drink and this gentleman
P4220088
was kind enough to take our pictures
P4220089
P4220090
as we drank our lemonade and iced coffee (sic tea)
P4220091
Paige
P4220092
arrived and I went to explore the bath room to see the signs
P4220093
P4220094
Francine had recommended. Then we made our way to the restaurant Paige had found
P4220095
and entered happily.
P4220096
The dinner party were Dick
P4220097
Suzanne
P4220098
P4220099
Paige
P4220100
Francine
P4220101
and David.
P4220102
The wine
P4220103
was very good as were the antipasti
P4220104
P4220105
P4220106
and the pasta dishes
P4220107
P4220108
P4220109
not to mention the main courses
P4220110
P4220111
P4220112
P4220113
P4220114
and the desserts
P4220115
P4220116
I drank my decaf cappuccino
P4220117
went to the station and found my train
P4220118
P4220119
Another weekend done.

A visit to San Diego
05.05.01
It was the week before Mother's Day and I hadn't been to San Diego for a while, so I decided to stop on the way to Seattle and see how Dansyl were doing in their new apartment. After the tour, we left the apartment
P5050001
and took the obligatory phone booth picture
P5050002
at the
P5050003
train station where we could read the schedule
P5050004
and watch the opposite track
P5050005
and the station
P5050006
while waiting for Larry
P5050007
to happily emerge from his train
P5050008
He's thinking of buying Gilbert's business which includes this equipment
P5050009
We parked the car in space 157
P5050010
and went upstairs to chat in the computer room
P5050011
P5050012
P5050013
When it was time for dinner, he
P5050014
was our server and took this picture
P5050015
of me and Larry
P5050017
doing the Smith brothers thing. The cousins were all there
P5050016
P5050018
as was the older generation
P5050019
P5050020
Dessert was good
P5050021
as was the wine

The grounds for sculpture
05.13.01
It was Mother's Day so we all got together for an excursion to the grounds for sculpture. We began with a picture of us behind the statue of the heads.
P5130023
Then we walked through the tunnel
P5130024
and Jane and Benjamin
P5130025
P5130026
P5130027
P5130028
became part of the next sculpture. But they were unable to figure out how to join this sculpture
P5130029
or the mesh man
P5130030
or the crying woman
P5130031
or this person.
P5130032
David enjoyed his conversation
P5130033
P5130034
with her but he was glad that he didn't have to talk to her.
P5130035
Jane and Suzanne sat down for lunch with these nice people
P5130036
P5130038
while the waiter
P5130037
watched. All this eating made Jane want to curl up
P5130039
and then Benjamin joined her.
P5130040
After the rest, we were ready to follow the rules
P5130041
as we played
P5130042
and then crawled through the sculpture
P5130043
to the forest
P5130044
where the ladies were
P5130045
and things got twisted
P5130046
until the bells
P5130047
rang but the lake creatures
P5130048
slept as their neighbors frolicked
P5130049
and Jane greeted
P5130050
the old guy.
P5130051
This made us want to sit by the boats where these people
P5130052
P5130053
seemed so happy that we
P5130054
P5130055
P5130057
and others
P5130056
joined them.
This lady
P5130058
sensed our joy and was floating on air at various angles
P5130059
P5130060
Her friend on the hill
P5130061
had to be taken seriously
P5130062
and these guys
P5130063
just cried out to have us join them
P5130064
P5130065
until we say the colorful sculpture
P5130066
We saw the peacock
P5130067
P5130068
P5130069
took the obligatory phone booth picture
P5130070
P5130071

and took the requisite family pictures

A day in Philadelphia
05.23.01
It was the gap after grading the exams and before giving the grades, so I decided that it was time to spend a day in Philadelphia with DrLen.
P5230076
P5230077
P5230078
whose neighbor had a good bumper sticker and license plate
P5230079
as DrLen got in his car
P5230080
and we drove to South Philadelphia where we parked in front of the cigar store that had this Indian (whoops!! Native American)
P5230081
in front of it so that we could eat at Marra's.
P5230082
P5230083
where they had good pizzas
P5230084
on their menu
P5230085
It was even better when it came
P5230086
Afterwards, we stopped in the facilities
P5230087
to work off the diet cokes we'd had in preparation for our trip to Italiano's
P5230088
P5230089
where they serve water ice and invented the gelati
P5230090
P5230091
I had the out of towners version
P5230092
while DrLen's was more traditional
P5230093
Next we went to visit Joel
P5230094
and Diane
P5230095
who took these pictures of her garden
P5230096
P5230097
and we headed off to South Philly where they put
McDonald's
P5230098
in front of painted murals on walls. We stopped at this park
P5230099
because it was opposite the original Levis building
P5230100
P5230101
P5230102
P5230103
while this gentleman obliged for the obligatory phone booth picture
P5230104
at the plaque
P5230105
for W. E. B. DuBois. He kept talking
P5230106
even as I took the piercing pictures
P5230107
P5230108
P5230109
and pondered getting one as DrLen met his former helper
P5230110
P5230111
whose name I forgot.
On we went towards the tattoo parlor
P5230112
P5230113
P5230114
and met the chef people.
P5230115
P5230116
and then the police
P5230117
P5230118
who didn't seem to mind me taking their picture but DrLen ducked in here
P5230119
Gentle viewer, perhaps you remember why I took this picture...
P5230120
as we headed to Rodeo Kidz
P5230121
by the stop sign
P5230122
while DrLen checked out the windows
P5230123
P5230124
and I shot a picture of another mural
P5230125
by Adler's Fabrics
P5230126
and the whole street scene
P5230127
at the corner with the nicely painted facade
P5230128
P5230129
looking out at the Stop Sign
P5230130
not to mention the beautiful pottery
P5230131
P5230132
Then we met an old friend
P5230133
P5230134
Again the street scene was very colorful
P5230135
P5230136
P5230137
P5230138
P5230139
as Larry
P5230140
P5230141
watched over the next corner
P5230142
P5230143
with the Haagen Dazs emblem
P5230144
hanging down as we saw another pioneer
P5230145
food establishment and a great cigar sign
P5230146
with boxes
P5230147
and seltzer bottles
P5230148
at gargoyles
P5230149
The sparkplug
P5230150
P5230151
inspired DrLen
P5230152
and the trucks
P5230153
and this inspirational message
P5230154
led us to Isaiah Zaigar's work
P5230155
P5230156
P5230157
P5230158
P5230159
P5230160
P5230161
and we headed further down the street
P5230162
past the narrow street
P5230163
the directional sign
P5230164
and the natives
P5230165
to the car. On the way home, we saw this bus sign
P5230166
P5230167
that reminded us that Judy was working, Our very last stop was to admire Wilt's mural
P5230168
P5230169
P5230170
P5230171
and take a picture of these guys

A day at the Museum
05.27.01
It was the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and this seemed like a day when the traffic to the city wouldn't be bad and the crowds easily handled, so we decided to drive in to the Museum of Natural history parking
P5270003
on 84th Street. While we waited for the rest of them to cross the street
P5270004
Benjamin
P5270005
explored the subway entry and we looked at the park
P5270006
that was named
P5270007
for Theodore Roosevelt who had a statue
P5270008
in front of the museum where they sold balloons.
P5270009
We wanted to see the genomics exhibit
P5270010
but first we visited the Neanderthals
P5270011
P5270013
and dinosaurs
P5270014
P5270015
P5270016
and headed off for lunch stopping for the obligatory phone booth picture
P5270017
The first restaurant
P5270018
had too long a wait so we visited the bubble blowing bear
P5270019
on the way to the good pizza place
P5270020
where we had these condiments
P5270021
and some of the family posed for pictures
P5270022
P5270023
P5270024
P5270025
P5270026
P5270027
Suzanne went back to the toy store
P5270028
on the way back to the museum where this police car
P5270029
was parked.

A visit to Dr K's office
05.29.01
I sent Maggie with the camera to explore what really happens in the schoolyard. She began with pictures of where you might expect the principal (aka the chief potato head) to park
P5290030
P5290031
P5290032
but he wasn't there. Fortunately, Joyce
P5290033
was in physics though there were no other signs that education happened that day. In physical education, the students
P5290034
P5290035
decided to emulate a small liberal arts college.
The main event still eluded us. Finally, Maggie got into the office of DrK and took pictures of the magical book case
P5290036
P5290037
and then some wonderful closeups
P5290038
P5290039
followed by a picture of the king's chair
P5290040
but why didn't she sit in it? The finale were these pictures
P5290041
P5290042
of his tea and mug collections.
Kudos to Maggie for a job well done.
