Jane had to do a project for Civics so she took a poll on how many people believe we should switch to the metric system. October 12, 2001 as told by Sarah. Today was Class Spirit Day at Princeton High School. Being a senior, and the class president no less, I was particularly excited about the anticipated pep rally. Claire decided last night that we should get to school incredibly early, 7:15 AM even, so that we could see what our classmates had done for the senior prank, since we had nothing to do with it. Yet, at 7:10, when she was already 5 minutes late, Claire had still not arrived to pick me up as I tried, but failed miserably, to document. Finally Claire showed up and we drove down Nassau Street, under a foggy air and a cloud-streaked sky so that we could get to Joyce's house where Joyce was waiting eagerly. We got to the school a little later than expected, but didn't realize that parking would be a problem since the Old Senior Lot was still blocked off from the painting. We usually like to arrive inconspicuously to give Claire a chance to park her massive Impala or in other words, a type of African Gazelle or Antelope depending on whom you believe... To our great chagrin, the Senior Girls who had purchased "Senior Girls '02" t-shirts were already congregated, all, of course, wearing their aforementioned shirts. Claire, Joyce, and I had chosen not to participate for reasons better off left unmentioned. We did take this opportunity to dress ourselves up in green and gold ribbon and gold glitter like the rest of the crowd. Even though they had already cleaned up the Senior Prank, we ran over to the front of the school to observe the genius of Andrew Hood. The painting of the Old Senior Lot turned out pretty well (in case you can't tell, it's a picture of the yellow brick road to the Emerald City - our colors are green and gold, if you hadn't realized yet) and if you look closely enough you can see the nearly-fatal risk I took in expressing my creativity. While waiting for Jess's mom at the back of the school, I decided to take some pictures of the lovely foliage and an attempt to capture the secret clock on the roof which no one else seems to believe is really a clock. It was Friday night and Sarah's friends were starting to assemble in the kitchen for the Friday night Italian cooking event. John Byers

who seemed to have caught some of Sarah's wooziness. And, we got one of the last pictures of Nancy before she gets her glasses. At this point, we gave the camera to Mary (having not learned our lesson a few weeks earlier) and let her do avant garde photography. She captured Boot

and some crowd shots including a clearer version of Sarah and less clear versions of others

None of this helped Sarah who was still woozy from the drugs and all. Seva and Richard

On February 17, it was time for the violin concert. Suzanne was happy to see things get started and hoped that these shoes would eventually get onto Benjamin's feet. Jane preferred to talk on the phone as Sarah tried to pose for fashion pictures. If only she could keep her eyes open. Jane finished her call and drank her water. And Benjamin put on his shoes but decided not to play the violin at the concert. Next time for sure. The next day, I needed to go to the office for a few minutes to meet with Caroline Moseley for her article about Perry Cook and then it was time to celebrate President's Day. Jane took this picture of a wall mural and these attempts at the status of William Penn before we pulled into the parking garage and caught our first view of the Reading Terminal Market and the Down Home Diner there. Once inside, we read the story of Philbert and rubbed his nose before exploring. We found this valuable piece of chocolate before discovering Dr Len who was glad to see us as well. We all gathered some lunch and Dr Len had his sandwich and Jane and Benjamin chowed down theirs and I had this fallafel with this drink. We recorded the Braverman's bakery sign that Dr Len had restored, noted the rest room sign as the French fries got lonely but Ben ate away at his sandwich. Dr Len spoke to the guard upstairs but he wouldn't let us explore the innards of the upstairs of the railroad station. After a picture of the Hard Rock Cafe we took this picture of Jane and then enteered the Franklin Institute where the other Ben was overseeing things. When we left, Ben had this hot dog and Jane had this pretzel bought from this stand run by mother and child. On the trip back to Princeton, Jane took this sequence of pictures of billboards about Wraps and these Jesus saves ones not to mention the Ms. Popularity billboards The next day, I brought my camera along and I went to talk to Jeff Dickey and the other JD about legal issues. Once back at the office, I ran into Melissa as I headed off to meet with the architects the administrators and the people who run the EQuad. My final surprise was when I got back to my office and the original jss showed up.

It was Saint Patrick's weekend and the start of our spring breaks, so Suzanne and I decided to spend a few days in New York getting a break from our daily lives. Sarah was on the phone and so hardly noticed. Claire

and posed with Sarah who closed her eyes. David and Paige did the Egyptian couple routine (or more likely the American family on an Egyptian cruise routine) as Suzanne

and we ran out of film. 3rd roll of pictures

Everyone seemed to be affected by the events of the day. Sarah had helped Jane with her makeup for the black tie Bat Mitzvah party and so decided to make a fashion statement hereself. Benjamin was worn out from the day and Jane was on the couch waiting for picture time which began with this closeup of her face. We went outside for the picture with shawl on facial closeups (for makeup) and ceremonial pictures under the basketball hoop. All of this activity caused Sarah to highlight her outfit including her belt her shirt and all of her. Next we took a few more pictures of Jane without her shawl followed by this artistically dizzying picture and a picture of Sarah's window to show who the photographer was. It was time to back out the car (notice the exhaust) with Jane and Suzanne aboard to say good bye to the house and leave their parking place empty as they headed off to the Bat Mitzvah. This was for experiments and a few movies Some pictures and some movies MVI_0064.AVI MVI_0064.THM MVI_0065.AVI MVI_0065.THM MVI_0085.AVI MVI_0085.THM and maybe more pictures?

Sarah came in from Shirley's and left for Spiderman but she paused for these 2 pictures. Then it was Saturday. Jane got this manicure

in front of the PopCorn bowl, we watched Sarah teach Kaylen some math and recorded Kaylen's work

to Kaylen's house. Unfortunately, our battery died so that we couldn't capture Chris mowing his lawn. Once she saw Jane's camera testing, Sarah needed to do the same. She began by making this movie of MVI_0210.AVI Suzanne reading to Benjamin and followed with this artistic black and white from the front porch. Of course, she couldn't resist the urge to record

which seem to be the key artifacts of our lives. Jane followed with this movie of Sarah MVI_0214.AVI walking across the family room and then this movie where MVI_0215.AVI Sarah walks upstairs and Suzanne is still reading to Benjamin. Before we knew it, it was Wednesday. To warm us up for Jane's dessert concert, Benjamin took out his violin and played a few tunes. Then we went to the main event. The new camera did not do a good job of capturing the choir

and Sarah's even though Sarah was not nearly as awake as Jane

were. The after pictures of Sarah Claire

For your thoughtful inspiration, Jane dutifully recorded this MVI_0815.AVI short video of a discussion about whether the past, the present and the future were abstract concepts or pieces of a number line that could be traversed at any rate during any time. was fairly incognito as she got ready to go to New York for an overnight and so had to miss the visit to Sarah's room that Benjamin

seemed to enjoy. After taking a picture of Sarah with Robert Accordino, her RA, we felt that the only thing left to do was to observe Sarah's bicycle standing regally in the rain and then declare Freshman parent's weekend a success. Later that day, Benjamin and I decided to brave the rain and go to the Princeton/Colgate football game where we ran into Jon and Jonah

appropriately chosen for parents weekend to take Sarah to a recent in a distant town that had been recommended by people who knew the area. On Sunday, I drove the car to parking space #63 where I parked by this sign

for this final photo. It was the weekend. A lot of people came into our lives and a lot of people left. More of our family than usual took pictures including some artistic work. We recorded much of it. Despite the appearances reflected in this web page, we did spend a fair amount of the weekend out of the house. We just recorded very little of that activity. To set the context, it was the beginning of fall break, so Sarah was quite happy to be home for a few days and David was happy to have his responsibilities reduced, though he should really have been writing that grant proposal rather than playing with the camera. It all started on Saturday when this was Benjamin's reaction to the rain and to the thought of going to the football game with Harvard, though we did manage to catch the second quarter and to show the Tigers how to score a touchdown, though our lesson didn't seem to take. After dinner, the gang assembled

and Lucy would have to leave. Sarah's gang from high school days gathered and came together

where they had a hefty lead. This freed Sarah to take her artistic black and white shots of the world as she was seeing it. She began with shots of Benjamin then me

Amy has been Sarah's room mate for the year and her parents decided to make a Valentine's Day trek to Princeton and other points East to bring some of the Calgary snow (the proverbial Alberta clipper ) with them. Before the snow came, we had a small gathering and this is what we saw. Amy's parents, Rob and Barb arrived and then there was the family portrait

for the collection, we called it a night and vowed to start celebrating again the next day which was the real birthday. But first we had to pause to give Jane many many hours to work on her anthology and for Sarah and Ed to think about breaking into the house (but I was asleep then and so there are no photos). Back to reality, the next day was Jane's true birthday and more gifts had appeared on the festive table

and Sarah dug in and then Benjamin

to end a creative day. On Friday, May 14, I ran into Sarah on the campus. While we were talking, her friend Ara passed by and they posed together and then we ran into Amv

who was on her way to New York for the weekend. On Saturday, May 15, the 4 of us went into town (while I suspect Sarah worked (or worried) about her last exam). There were a few street crossings that led to the usual disputes about whether it is valid to cross against the light if you can make it. But those debates were interrupted when we saw Celia Chazelle

the new head of the Chemistry Department. On Friday May 21, Sarah was emptying the minivan as Joel and Ben

hung by the tree and Sarah and Amv showed their strength and Amv

explain why our paperwork was not in order for Ben and why our picture was not good for Jane. So, it will be another journey. It started on the 23rd of May, when Sarah assembled her friends for a salad dish

as Sarah and Suzanne Claire and Joyce

as Claire and Sarah prepared to make their way and Ben

arrived to accompany Sarah. So, we marched by generations starting with the PU students then progressing to the JP students

led to 2 pictures of Sarah one each of Jane

so that Sarah could experiment with pictures for which the flash was not used starting with me then Ben

and then we were ready to head home. Imagine our surprise when we ran into Sarah and Claire with Amv

that actually show me in costume. Summer was upon us. Sarah had arranged an internship in Boston and found a place to stay in Cambridge, so we were slated to spend a weekend driving there and getting her settled. Before I could go, I had to meet with Yacine Ait-Sahalia from the Economics department on June 2. On June 4, we drove to Cambridge. Out hotel was in Kendall Square so we had a chance to see the Stata Center

of 881 Mass Ave. Morning of Saturday, June 5 we went to Sarah's apartment where her room had a nice welcome and even with her stuff in disarray

so that we could go off and explore and look for Sarah's place of work which came through better here

who is barely visible even as Sarah and the man with the pushcart

as Sarah put on her shoes and the water

as we made our way to the hotel and Sarah came to learn Ben's song

and took pictures of the back of Sarah's hair and sat some more

and then Sarah and I

and Sarah were happy to meet the waiter

and we wished Sarah a good year at school. Next morning, we packed the car and headed to Sarah's room where Suzanne surveyed the situation

and we were off. We were early to pick up Sarah and so went to the WaWa where we saw Bill Flemmer and then returned to where Suzanne and Ben

were watching Sarah emerge ready to go. We were excited that E Z Pass worked

as Sarah got guidance and eventually moved her hands fast enough

and Sarah watched until Ed arrived

before taking holiday pictures of Sarah and Ed me (with hat in self portrait)

and Sarah and then Ben and Sarah showed our excitement about the game that was going to be such a dissapointment later. The Hutner-Flemer's

was quite something as I walked behind Ben and Sarah as we made our way past this water valve

was desserted as Sarah made her way to the plowed mountain

which didn't photograph well. This inspired Sarah to take a few pictures before expanding the lens and using white balance to improve on what I had done

and Sarah got her chicken sandwich all of which fortified us for the walk home. En route, we crossed the street

and Sarah and Suzanne and I

Left to Right: Jason Fleischer (Electrical Engineer), Kathleen Davis (English), Frederick Hughson (Molecular Biology), Sarah-Jane Mahieu (History), Miguel Centeno (Sociology and PIIRS), Paul Lansky (Music) and then came home for a picture of my new tie as Ben decided to take a too close

in the stall. After dinner, it was time to celebrate Sarah's birthday and so we started the ritual of present opening with a display of earrings

was loaded with balloons for Sarah's real birthday. While we weren't invited to the celebration, Devon Louise Cecilia Wessman-Smerdon took these pictures so we feel like we were there. On Tuesday (4/19), a faculty group came to lunch

and Sarah Whiting whoa re job candidates in Architecture. I ended the work day in a discussion with Slobodan Curcic (Art and Archaeology)

went out and brought in the mail. Sarah and Devon arrived and started melting chocolate

for posterity. Next, Sarah produced her old and new driver's licenses for all to admire (though the camera did not do a good job) and Jane took this sequence of pictures of Suzanne and I in our Egyptian garb

so that we too could feel that with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm we too were brought out from Egypt. It was house parties and so Sarah and Ed posed in Prospect Gardens and then Ed posed with Devon

We began with the table set and then Jane modeled her dress

while Sarah and Devon reappeared and Suzanne

took a phone call. As Dale Engelbert chatted with Devon and Sarah there were more prom'ers assembling

Sarah chatted with Liz Marchetta (possibly about the prom 3 years ago?) and Jane and John

and Sarah and Jane and then the boys gathered

but Ben was not participating. After admiring the statues Sarah bought in Greece we headed to school where Dr. Ginsburg was talking to the PTO mothers

and it was time for someone ( thanks to Sarah for volunteering ) to get in position to see those with memories of second grade to assemble and take their turns

which is getting a new bud. Meanwhile, Syl was unpacking the bells from Sarah and getting ready to install them
