We went for a walk into town and ran into Annie Knickman and Kevin Manley outside of Starbuck's.

A few days later, I took Steve Forrest out for drinks and showed him how I take self portraits and profile images of myself

I had visitors in my office starting with Narij Jha from Electrical Engineering and then Ruth Stevens from Communications and Cass Cliatt, the new media relations manager in communications came to visit.

This was the first day of my trip west for Siggraph and Google. I started in Philadelphia with this breakfast as I glanced around the food court but before I knew it, I was on the other coast and this car was picking me up to take me to this restaurant or maybe this restaurant where the menu kept Syl and Dan engaged as I took this self portrait and then SYl admired my salad as Dan had eggs with his salad and Syl had these eggs which fueled us for the trip home to see the orchid as Syl discussed plans for dinner and we were eventually off for Marrakesh where our meal began with the hand washing ceremony (with rose scented water) for Dansyl

after which I admired the decor from the ceiling and the walls and the people at our table, Syl Dan and this self portrait of myself before the soup and salads arrived and this group picture of me with Dansyl was taken by our waiter before the main courses, involving more food than we could possibly eat, arrived and as the belly dancer did her thing we considered wandering off into the outside world where gas cost more than three dollars a gallon and called it a night.

Sunday began with my bags assembled as we drove off to San Clemente and the Shore House Face where we had eaten before with a slightly different crowd . Dan settled in with light behind him as Syl settled and Larry seemed to amuse the waiter who eventually became part of the family as I admired the neon and then took this self portrait as Janet and Paige arrived bearing a gift from Libya which looked a lot better sans flash as I admired the shared minestrone and Larry's milkshake as Paige and I shared a large salad and Janet and Syl shared this sandwich to go with Larry's nachos and my half of the veggie burger (also shared with Paige) which led to another round of pictures of Syl Dan Paige Janet and then these group family photos taken with the waiter who seemed to want to be one of us as Paige danced and the owner (I think) and waitress were amused because perhaps they knew that I was about to get this collection sign and that Paige was going to contribute this collection sign before I departed with a stop at Larry and Janet's house to see their countertops and the prices of gas there before Larry dropped me off at the Hotel Westin Bonaventure where I had a 2 room suite with this bed room this sitting room and this bathroom

The next day, I acted like a computer scientist though I did break the mold to have dinner with Rich Riesenfeld and Elaine Cohen and posed with Rich before taking this self portrait and having these pictures of Rich Riesenfeld, Elaine Cohen and me taken by our waitress.

The next day, I ran into Leo Guibas at Starbucks before having lunch with Misha Kazhdan *04 and letting Julio do the cooking and delivery of my dinner.

Next it was time to head north, so I made my way through airport security taking this risky picture before renting this car in San Jose and heading to the Hotel Avante in Mountain View to settle into my room with a sloping bed, a limited closet door, the best supplied desk I've ever and an avant garde sink mounted on, not in, the counter. Next, I walked down the street to the Indian restaurant where they served all of this food and the bread for about #5 which I why I'm happy in the self portrait or maybe I knew I'd soon see the laser cut materials in the back of Jacobo's car and be able to hold one of the new gaskets as we headed off to the Laser Shop where Jacobo marked the occasion but the proprietors were not home so we went to see OtherChefRob but I am not yet able to divulge the details of the secret project I observed there but I was allowed to observe OtherChefRon's car and hear the details of its various demises

and then drive to Half Moon Bay to take our standard walk and admire the cost of real estate before stopping to see the dinosaurs on the way back and then having bread with pictures of Jacobo and this self portrait before his calzone and my pizza arrived and I began the challenge of taking a self portrait of myself with my food

The next day was Thursday and we began by going tot he Shoreline to see the new facilities which had no collection signs and then saw where the swallows nest and then saw the misguided Canadian geese who were on the wrong coast before we went back to the Laser Shop and I posed with the machines that do the real cutting. Then we went to lunch where the menu was posted and the food brought to our table which amused Jacobo as I took this self portrait before we went our separate ways so that I could have the phone call I didn't want to take.

The next day, I went to Google and captured Rob Pike's head and then Rob Pike before taking this picture of Kai Li, Hector Garcia-Molina and Dan Wallach and having Kai take these pictures of me with Hector and Dan as Dave Patterson worked on his phone call and the guard told us that there was no photo taking in Google.

Once outside, the Princeton group assembled and I took these pictures of the Princeton group before Bill Pugh came by and took these pictures so that I could be with the Princeton group at Google

After the day at Google, I went to Hector's house where Paul Hudak modeled the latest in database basketball fashion and we took to the courts

as the camera folks watched and more basketball began

before there was more camera action and a return to the game

then I posed and shot over defenders before Hudak gave a clinic to the bystanders which seemed to get Hector up and on the court though as the game wound down Hector and Avi Silberschatz were still prepared to spectate

as the rest of us completed the game. Special thanks to Zhong Shao for all the photos.

Later, Hector led us to Mountain View where Kai took this group photo as Hector adjusted his lighting and we declared it a wonderful trip west.
